Computer Tips [ Critical Security Patch + Revive Your Doomed Hard Drive + Up-Up-Updoad Away! ] 11/03/08

Computer Tipswww.worldstart.com No, this isn't Steve. You can tell because Steve never wears a suit :-)

Quick Tips

Get on the Right Level

Have you been having some trouble with your hard drive lately? Maybe you've been having so many problems, you're almost ready to just give up on it and go buy a new one. Well, before you do that, you might find this little tip a tad bit interesting. Keep reading for the full scoop!

Some hard drives are very sensitive to surfaces that are not level. Wow, who knew?! Most have trouble functioning properly when they are placed on an uneven surface or at a slant. To move your hard drive and see if that could be the problem, shut down your computer and move your system to a flatter area. You can even use a level to make sure the surface is completely flat. When you've got everything set back up, go ahead and restart your computer normally to see if the drive works any better than it did before.

Often times, this will help bring a doomed hard drive back to life. Keep in mind though that this trick will not work with every single hard drive. Yours might have problems beyond repair and you, of course, will have to look into those further. But you can always give this a shot, just to see what happens!

Computers 101

Q:
Can you please give me some basic instructions on how to upload pictures?

A:
That's an excellent question and it's one we haven't really touched on before! (If you're not sure what it means to upload, you may want to read through this tip first). Now, before I go any further, there are several ways you can upload files from your computer. You can upload files onto your own personal Web site, you can upload pictures to a profile you may have on a particular Web site and so on.

You also need to have some sort of file manager to be able to upload pictures or anything else you want to transfer. There are different programs available to do that type of work. Some examples are an FTP server, Pixagogo and Picasa. There are obviously more out there, but those are a few of the more popular and well known ones. Now, if you're uploading a photo from a Web site (such as MySpace), there's already a file manager there and they pretty much do all the work for you.

I'll first explain how to upload a picture from one of those types of Web sites. I'm going to use MySpace as my example, but there are several other sites that allow you to upload items and they all do it just about the same way. All you have to do is get to the area where you can place your pictures and click on the Browse button. Then just navigate to where your photo is saved. (Chances are, you have it in your My Pictures folder or somewhere similar). Click on the picture and then click Open. That will insert the picture onto the Web site. Next, all you have to do is click on the Upload button and the process will begin.

Once the picture is done uploading, it will tell you that it was finished successfully or not and you can then go and view it on the Web site. Most sites have a separate area for photos and you can go in there to find your new pictures. You can then let all your friends know that you have posted new pictures and they can check them out too. It's just a fun way to share photos with everyone you know!

Now, if you're wanting to upload a file to your own Web site, you may want to use a type of program like an FTP server. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and it means just that. As long as you have the file saved on your computer, you can transfer it to your Web site's host server so that it's available to be viewed on the Internet. You can specify a specific area where you want your photos to be stored and once you hit the transfer arrow, everything will be done. It only takes seconds to complete as well. This process is a little more difficult to explain in a short article like this, but it's all spelled out nicely in this article. You can check that out for more help!

That's pretty cool, huh?! Uploading is an up and coming process and it doesn't hurt to get yourself familiar with it as soon as possible. Now, go on and upload away!

MS Office

Border It Now

Do you ever find yourself working in MS Excel when you need a quick border for a cell or a group of cells?

You could go through the hassle of the whole "hands off the keyboard and onto the mouse" method or you could just highlight the cells to be bordered and try Ctrl + Shift + &.

Yep, that's it. Three little keys will do the trick!

Want to remove the border?

Again, just highlight the cells involved, but this time, try Ctrl + Shift + _.

The border is gone!

Oh, one more thing!

If you're wondering how this saves you from using the mouse, I'd like to remind you about the power of the Shift key.

Hold down the Shift key while using the arrow keys to move the cell selection and you'll leave a trail of selected cells. Yes!

When I saw these, all I could think about was my mom wearing her reading glasses over top of her normal glasses while working on the computer. Then when she wants to do something else, she has has to take off her reading glasses! I am sure you have seen people do this before too! Sometimes you just can't see those fine details or small lettering with your normal glasses and need just an extra bit of magnification!

If you know someone who has done this, or have done it yourself, we have got the perfect solution for you. In fact, when I saw these clip on magnifiers, I immediately picked up a few sets for my mom because the next time she tries to wear two pair of glasses while reading the hymnal at church, I might laugh at her! Besides, they are sooo lightweight and small, that they make perfect stocking stuffers!

But these magnifiers are just too cool! Uniquely designed, these magnifiers clip right on to your normal prescription glasses, providing you with enough magnification to really read all of those fine details!

Plus, because they clip right onto your eye glasses, both of your hands are free to do whatever you would like! Now that is really cool especially if you are into needlework, crafts, or other hobbies that having a precise eye is extremely important!

Now, another thing that is really awesome about these clip on magnifiers is that when they are not in use, you can simply flip them up!!! (Think of clip on sunglasses!) What a great idea!!! Man, I wish I would have thought of something this clever!

Better yet, they are sooo lightweight, that you won't even be able to tell that they are on your glasses! WOW!

Cost? Yep, we have a mega deal for you! Buy one of these magnifiers for $10.97 and we will give you spare one for FREE! WOW!!! Now that is an amazing deal! Don't be like my mom wearing two pair of glasses to see that fine print or tiny details! Order these now! You will be glad you did!

Tip of the Day

Critical News: Security Patch

Please listen up! You don't want to miss this important announcement!

Last Thursday (October 23, 2008), Microsoft released a critical Windows security patch, which is something they haven’t done since April 2007. And of course, it quickly started raising eyebrows in the technology community. The security patch fixes a vulnerability that allows a remote program to be run in Windows without any authentication. A worm that uses the hole in the Windows security to take over a computer has already been released on the Internet.

According to security experts, the worm, named “Gimmiv,” locates the security hole on a computer and executes a program that steals passwords. The code for the worm was released on a popular hacking Web site, which leads many to believe that the exploit will be modified and different versions of Gimmiv will be released on the Web.

On Friday (October 24, 2008), Symantec and McAfee, Inc. stated that they had only seen a small amount of attacks based on the exploit. However, Symantec said they discovered a 25 percent increase in network scans for computers that contain the vulnerability, which suggests the amount of attacks on this security hole may increase.

Windows 2000, XP, Vista and Server 2003 are all affected by this new vulnerability and it's recommended that users of those operating systems turn on their Automatic Updates so that they can receive the security patch. (To do that, go to Start, Control Panel, Security Center, Automatic Updates). Stay safe out there!
