Quick Tips

All Your Faves

So, tell me, how many favorites do you have saved on your computer? Ten? Twenty-five? One hundred? No matter how many you have, you know how important your favorites are. I mean, every time you happen upon a Web site you like, all you have to do is add it to your favorites list and it's then just a mouse click away. Plus, there are so many different kinds of favorites you can have, it's just silly not to take advantage of them. What am I getting at, you ask? Well, keep reading and I promise you will be pleasantly surprised!

I was browsing through WorldStart's message board the other day and I came across a post from user "Jimmy Carter" that I instantly fell in love with. It's a Web site called All My Faves and it features links to almost every Web site you could ever think of. When you first get to the site, you'll see a line of tabs that run across the top, as well as, different categories listed on the left hand side of the page. And no matter which one you click on, you'll see gobs of company logos that just fill up the entire page. Yep, it's all your favorites in one place!

The different categories include Weekly Faves, E-mail, Sports, Weather, Shopping, Music, Health, Jobs, Games, Kids and Travel, among others. And the logos include just about every favorite you've probably ever saved. There's Google, Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Sports Illustrated, Wal-Mart, Chase, Skype, UPS, CareerBuilder, Disney, Hertz, Orbitz, Blockbuster, Verizon and the list goes on and on. You really have to see it to believe it. It's simply amazing how many sites are jam packed onto this one page! To check out All My Faves for yourself, just click here. All your faves in one spot. Who could ask for anything more?!

Q:
I just recently started using Windows Vista and I've been having trouble with some of the drivers associated with my hardware. I know I should be able to use the Device Manager to fix those things, but I'm not quite sure where to start. Can you please help? Thank you so much!

A:
Excellent question! First, I'd like to welcome you to the world of Windows Vista. I know it was probably a big step to make the upgrade, but you did it and now you're on your way to learning all there is to know about your new operating system. How exciting is that?! Plus, I know you're not the only one who has recently made the switch over to Vista, so today's question will really help you and a lot of other new users. Below, you will find a simple explanation on how to actually find the Device Manager, along with a few troubleshooting techniques for some common issues you may run into. Okay, here we go!

To begin, let's open up the Device Manager. In Windows Vista, go to Start, Control Panel and click on the System and Maintenance link. Next, click on the System link and then on the left hand side under the Tasks pane, click on Device Manager. That will open a window that lists all of your computer's hardware. You'll see all of your computer's adapters, ROM drives, your keyboard, your mouse, the controllers, the USB ports, etc. Anything that has to do with your computer's hardware will be listed there. In short, it will look something like this:

Now, let's get back to the question at hand. If you've been having trouble with the drivers for some of your computer's hardware, there are three common issues that come into play. Chances are, your problem lies within one of them, so let's get down to it!

1.) Certain Hardware is Not Listed - The first problem arises when hardware you expected to find is not listed. If something is left off the list, it's likely the hardware was not installed correctly. In that case, you should power down your computer and find the actual hardware device. Take some time to make sure it's hooked up correctly and then restart your computer. Once you do that, Vista should automatically recognize the hardware and it will go through the installation process again. You may be asked for the hardware's drivers during the new installation, so just make sure you have those ready to go as well. When the installation is done, you should now see the hardware listed under the Device Manager.

2.) You See a Yellow Exclamation Point - It's possible that when you get the Device Manager open, you'll see a few entries that have yellow exclamation points next to them. When that happens, it means the hardware is installed correctly and Windows recognizes it, but it's still not working properly. That type of thing usually involves a driver error, so you just need to update your drivers. To do that, right click on the hardware (the one that has the exclamation point next to it) and choose Properties. Next, click on the Driver tab and then the Update Driver button. From there, click on the option that says "Search automatically for updated driver software." Vista will then look for the correct updated drivers for your hardware device and install them for you. If Windows can't find any, you will need to go to the manufacturer's Web site and download them there.

3.) The Dreaded Red X Appears - If you have a hardware device with a red X next to it, you're dealing with a disabled piece of hardware. To fix that, simply right click on the hardware and choose Enable. That will start up the hardware and you can begin using it like normal once again.

That's it! Working through all of those troubleshooting techniques should fix your hardware issues within your Device Manager. Luckily, they're all fairly easy to do and they deliver results. Give them a try today!

Breaking Up Isn't So Hard to Do

If you tried the tip from the other day, where you imported data from the Web into Excel 2007, you may have found that not all data appearing to be a table is actually a table. Am I right?

I found that many things I imported were actually just text, so it came into Excel in a single column.

So, now what?

I mean, let's face it. The data is no good being treated as text all in column A. How can you do any work with it like that?

I guess the next question is: Can you separate it efficiently?

Of course you can! Why else would I mention it?

To separate your imported data, first select the column that contains your data.

Now, under the Data tab on the ribbon, you're looking for the Text to Columns button.

A three step wizard for the process will then begin.

  • In the first step, tell Excel how the data is currently separated. (I found that my data elements were set apart by a fixed width).

  • Step 2 allows you to see and edit where Excel will split things up. You can create new column breaks, remove the ones it's putting in that you don't agree with or you can choose to move them from their current positions.

  • Finally, step 3 of the wizard allows you to select each column and tell Excel how to format the data in that column.

Clicking on Finish will set Excel into motion, returning you to the worksheet where you'll happily find your data broken into separate columns and ready for work!

Attention Digital Photographers!

FINALLY - An Easy Way To...

Organize, Edit, Email, And Print Your Photos!!

On Sale TODAY ONLY(11-13-2008)

Just $8.97!! WOW!!

A Must Read:

OK, you have a digital camera. Let me guess - you have a ton of photos all over your hard drive, right? That's what I thought :-)

Wouldn't it be great if there were a way to keep all those images organized, easy to work with, and simple to share? Great news - we found a new program every digital photographer is going to want. It's called Personal ImageManger Express and it's just awesome! I can tell you it's going to make my digital life a lot easier - read on!

First off, it's really easy (dare I say even fun) to use. It can acquire photos from your hard drive, digital camera, scanner, whatever. From there, you can quickly organize all your photos into easy to manage categories. You can even create categories across numerous folders. In fact, you can even put the same photo in multiple categories if you like (very handy).

However, image management is just the beginning with this one! It also features an excellent photo editor that includes all the major tools you need. This thing just blew me away! It can easily do stuff like color balance, contrast, brightness, hue, cropping, red-eye removal, even special effects! Plus, it has an awesome "one-button enhance" tool that does a great job at automatically making your images look their very best! You may never use your old imaging software again!

And then it gets even better! This program also has an awesome captioning feature. You can add a regular caption at the bottom (or top, side etc) to a photo or you can place a caption in the image itself (see site for a screen shot). And get this - these captions are searchable by the program! Excellent tool!

As if all that weren't enough, you can also add "picture frames" to photos with the click of a button, as well as photographer info, dates, shapes, clipart and more! Even rate your own photos and search by rating!

And there's still more to tell! This also makes it really easy to share photos by e-mail! One of the biggest problems people run into when they want to e-mail a photo is the photos are just too big - usually way too big. They take forever to send, forever to download, and are hard for the recipient to see. This little gem will resize any image for e-mail with the click of a button (the original image stays intact, of course).

In fact, if you use an e-mail client on your computer (like Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Eudora, etc), it will resize your image and automatically put it in a new message for you! Just put in the address, fill in a subject, and send - it couldn't be easier. Even if you already know how to resize for e-mail, this will do it with a lot more speed and a lot less hassle.

OK, I gotta tell you about the printing and I'll stop :-) If you print your images you know that getting them to the proper size for 4x6, 5x7, or 8x10 can be a pain. Well, this does it automatically for you! Cool huh?

Alright, I think you get the idea - this is one program every digital photographer should be using and I've only touched on a portion of what it can do! It's easy to work with, loaded with tons of useful features, and the price is right - it's on sale TODAY ONLY (11-13-2008) for just $8.97 and US shipping is FREE! It's an amazing deal, check it out:

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=2050

PS - If you take digital photos, you owe it to yourself to try this. It'll make your photos fun to work with, keep you organized, and it makes printing something you'll actually want to do!

Tip of the Day

Atomic Cleaner

A problem most Windows users face is unnecessary files residing in cryptic folders on their hard drive. You know, files like your Internet browsing cache, files left behind by games you play and so on. Those not only slow down your system's performance, but they also occupy valuable disk space. You wouldn’t let rats and rodents infest your house, would you? Then why let those files corrupt your system?! Well, with Atomic Cleaner, a small utility that takes care of all of the above, you no longer will. Atomic Cleaner allows you to perform such maintenance with just a few clicks and instantly, you'll see an improvement in your system speed. It also removes traces of Internet activity to make your system more secure. Let's check it out!

The installation of Atomic Cleaner is much like any other Windows software and you shouldn’t have any trouble getting it set up. Once you have it installed, go ahead and open it up and you'll see this simple screen:

On the left, you have your options and on the right, you have their explanations. There are several programs available that can help you get rid of your cache and Internet history, but Atomic Cleaner wins out, because it also has a “gamer cleanup” option. Honestly, most gamers aren't even aware that while playing a game, a lot of temporary files are created on their system. More so, they're left behind even after you uninstall the game.

So, all you have to do is select the option you want and the cleanup will begin. While Atomic Cleaner is working, it gives you additional information, as you can see in the screenshots below:

The time taken to clean up depends on the amount of "garbage" you have residing on your computer, but once it's finished, it gives you an overall report of how the cleaning went. You can then take pride in your newly "spick and span" computer!

Check Atomic Cleaner out for yourself right here. Enjoy!

Today's Feature

Picasa 3

When it comes to an easy way to share, edit and organize your photos, Picasa is the only way to go! We have written about Picasa here at WorldStart before, because it's a great free program made by Google that packs in a lot of power.

And not too long ago, Google announced the arrival of Picasa 3. The new version offers even more features than the previous one, so there's plenty of new stuff to try out. Or, if you've never used Picasa before, you surely don't want to miss out on the new version 3!

Here are some of the great things you can do with Picasa 3:

Retouch Images: In Picasa 3, you can fix little problems with your pictures using the Retouch tool. Simply click on the problem area and the program will handle it from there.

Share Images with Web Albums: Picasa 3 offers a new feature that allows you to automatically upload your images to the Web so that others can see them. You can even choose the option of Sync Pictures so that any changes made on the album will automatically update to the Web.

Make Movies: With Picasa 3, you can take your pictures and turn them into movies. It's a great feature and it's one I use with my own photos all the time.

Watermarks: You can add a custom watermark to your pictures to mark them as your own. If you have images that are unique, that's a great feature for you.

The above list is short in comparison to the full list of capabilities Picasa 3 has. So, if you want to learn more about Picasa 3 and get it for yourself, you can download it right here. Enjoy!

Toondoo

Are you ready to get creative with comics? I hope so, because I know I am! The first thing you need to do is register. Just fill out the form with a username, password and e-mail address. Then click on the Register button and just like that, you’re good to go ahead and log in!

When you log in, you'll be on your dashboard, which shows you the latest toondoos, the random pick of the day, popular tags and the latest comments.

To create your own toondoo, click on the Pencil button that says “Create Your Own.” That will then open the Cartoon Strip Creator in another window. On the top navigation strip, you’ll find buttons for characters, backgrounds, props and text bubbles. On the bottom navigation strip, you’ll find buttons that let you edit the things you’re adding from the top navigation strip. Those tools are easy to figure out, but if you run into any snags, you can check out the Help Wiki section back on the main page.

Here's a comic I made in about three minutes. I know it’s not hilarious, but it’s still cute!

You can also browse through the comics other people have made and redo them if they've left them open for editing. If they have, it will have a ReDoo It button next to it. Just click on that and it will open the Cartoon Strip Editor for you to make your changes.

As you're browsing cartoon strips, you can also comment on them, fave them, cheer them, flag as inappropriate or even print them out!

I had so much fun making cartoon strips and I hope you do too!
