Quick Tips

Help and Support

Here's a quick refresher for you!

When you're working on your computer, you sometimes just get stuck and need some help, don't you? I know it happens to me all the time! Well, when that happens, if there's absolutely no one else around to answer your questions, try the Help and Support Center found under your Start menu. Yep, you read that right! For instant help, just go to Start and then click on the Help and Support option.

The Help and Support Center provides a place for you to ask questions about Help topics, tutorials, troubleshooting and other general support issues. The best thing of all is it's located right there on your computer, so you don't have to waste time on the phone trying to get through to your provider. So, if you ever run into any problems when no one else is available to help, just keep the support center in mind. Who knew your problems could be so easy to fix?!

It's Almost Winter- And Time To Park In Your Garage!!

Park Your Car The Easy Way!

Perfect Parking EVERY Time!

A Must-Have For Anyone With A Garage!

WOW! This GE Parking Sensor is sooo cool, and is definitely a must have for everyone's garage!  This handy little sensor sits hangs on your wall and shines a bright red light when you've pulled your car in the specified distance! Sure, its sounds like a simple thing, but it's really, really handy!

I'm really excited about this because we have an attached garage - but it's a little on the short side for my truck. I only have about a foot or so one way or the other of wiggle room. I'm forever getting out and inching the truck up so the stupid door will shut.

This allows me to pull the truck in and stops me when I'm exactly a foot away from the wall! (You can specify the distance to be 1, 2 or 3 feet). I never have to jump back in the truck and pull it up more, and I don't have to worry about bumping into the wall if I pull in too far! It's perfect!

Installation is so simple too - just pop in a set of batteries, set your distance, and hang the thing! My kids could do it!

Your price? Right now, it's just - Get this - just $24.97 and US shipping is FREE! To me, this is worth each and every penny! If it's a hassle every time you park in your garage, grab one of these and make it easy!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4148

PS - This is a limited quantity deal so hurry to the site and grab it while you can! I wasn't sure if I'd want one, but now that I have it, I won't go back!

Computers 101

Q:
I just bought a new mouse and every once in awhile, it just stops on me. It eventually starts working again, but I don't know what to do to keep it that way all the time. Can you please help me?

A:
Well, I surely can! First of all, let me ask you this: Is the mouse you bought wireless? If so, it sounds like you're having a problem with it "falling asleep" on you. Still not sure what I mean? Well, sometimes wireless mice go into a "sleep" mode and you just have to give it a quick tug to wake it back up. Keep reading for all the details!

Some wireless mice are programmed to go into the sleep mode after approximately eight minutes of non-use. So, if you leave your computer for more than eight minutes, you will probably come back to a sleeping mouse. The main reason they do that is to save some battery life while you're not using it. Some common brand names known to have mice like that are Memorex and Logitech.

When you get back to your computer, you may see the mouse pointer on your screen, but you'll notice that it doesn't move at first. You either have to jerk it awake by moving your mouse back and forth quickly or sometimes, if you just give it a quick click, it will turn back to a working condition. That's easy enough, right?

It may be a little annoying, but hey, you have to look at the bright side: it saves you battery power. You can't complain about that, now can you?! Also, keep in mind that this doesn't happen to every wireless mouse, so you may have lucked out and got one that doesn't. But, if yours does, at least you now know how to bring it back to life!

MS Office

Hassle Free Web Data in Excel 2007

So, you have data on a Web page and you need to move it into an MS Excel worksheet.

What are you planning to do?

Copy/paste each piece of data? Re-enter the data?

Well, I vote you import the data directly from the Web and avoid all the transfer time.

If you're on board with that idea, let's take a look!

  • First, you need to locate the Web page with the data you need.

  • Now, copy the URL of the Web page.

  • Next, it's off to Excel 2007 and the Data tab on the ribbon.

  • Under the Get External Data section, click on the From Web button.

  • Paste the URL into the address bar when the New Web Query dialogue window opens.

  • Use either the Go button or the Enter key to navigate to the Web page with your data.

  • Once you're on the page, you'll find that Excel has marked tables with a little yellow arrow.

  • Click on the arrow of the table you want to import.

  • To finish, click on the Import button.

  • The Import Data dialogue window will then ask you to tell Excel where to put the data.

  • Make a choice and then click OK.

Voila. Data tables in Excel 2007 with minimal effort!

Portable Compact Design & Easy Plug and Play!

I Have A Conspiracy Theory.

Some days it can seem as if there is a conspiracy being perpetrated against the consumer by all of the digital camera, mobile phone and PDA manufacturers. How so?

As each new device comes out, there seems to be a new type of flash media card that must be purchased in order to properly use the item. While I think that is a good thing to have smaller media cards in order to create smaller electronic devices, I find that it can be frustrating to have to buy a new reader each time a company comes out with a "pro" or micro-sized version of its regular product.

If you have a plethora of media cards and you don't want to keep a collection of readers, then you should take an extra special look at this 23-in-1 USB 2.0 Card Reader / Writer that we have on sale for you today!

Smooth Ruby Red Mouse Is The Perfect Size!

Awesome Retractable Cord Makes It Better Than Wireless!

"This Is The Coolest & Most Practical Mouse We Have Ever Used!"

This is the best mouse I have ever used, I'm not kidding, and here's why..

First and foremost it's not bulky! It's the perfect size that fits both desktop and laptop users! It's designed with a smooth ruby red UV paint color that really sparkles, pictures can't even capture the vibrancy of this color. Better yet, the optical scroll wheel glows with a blue LED when plugged in and offers a high resolution of 800 CPI! It's USB retractable cord easily extends up to 28-inches! Simply pull the cord again and it retracts back into its housing! It's that easy!

"Better Than Wireless".. That's a bold statement, I know! But here is why- the USB retractable cord (approximately 28-inches extended) won't leave unneeded cord lying around! This is great news for laptop owners who are only 5 inches away from their machines and don't need a mess of cord flopping around in their space! Desktop users - it's great for you too! I mean come on, am I the only one that gets annoyed when the weight of the extra cord pulls the mouse away! Plus, this mouse doesn't take batteries, which will save you money and the hassle of having to desparately searching your house for a battery when your mouse dies on you mid project... (yuck).

What else I really love about this mouse is that it is really comfortable to use. It fits my hand perfectly and allows me to navigate around the page quickly and easily. Plus with the opical feature, this mouse is extremely precise. Better yet, there is no ball to clean. What could be better than comfort, precision, and nothing to clean? Nothin' right!!!

Wrong- something is better, that being the PRICE! Today only this mouse is on sale for just $10.97 and, like always, US Shipping is FREE!

What are you waiting for, this kind of deal won't last long. In fact, the price will increase to $14.97 on Tuesday. Order now!!!

Tip of the Day

John's Background Switcher

I love WorldStart's wallpaper, but every month, I’m faced with a huge dilemma: which one to use as my desktop background. Do you know what I mean? After all, it’s the photo I’ll be staring at every time my computer boots up. Luckily, I recently found a program called John’s Background Switcher and I haven’t stopped using it since! Not only does it change your background periodically, but it also allows you to use photos from Flickr, Picasa and even RSS feeds. Cool, huh? Here’s how you can get it!

1.) First, click here to go to the Web site.

2.) Next, click on Run (for Internet Explorer) or Save and double click on the file (for Firefox).

3.) Now, simply go through the installation.

4.) To start John’s Background Switcher, right click on the icon that appears in your system tray (where the clock sits) and choose Settings.

5.) To get WorldStart's wallpaper on John’s Background Switcher, you’ll have to save the ones you want first. To do that, go to http://www.worldstart.com/wallpaper and click on one of the backgrounds you’d like to include in your rotation.

6.) When you get to the image’s page, right click on the photo and select Save Image As (it could also say Save Picture As).

7.) Do that for all the images you want to place in your rotation. When you’re done, go back to John’s Background Switcher’s settings and click on Add.

8.) Once you’ve chosen the folder with all your rotation pictures intact, you’re done! Just sit back and enjoy the show. Happy background changing!

Inventor’s Handbook

I was reading the news about this kid who invented a toilet prop that automatically raises and lowers the toilet seat with a foot lever. In the article, they talked about whether or not they would patent the invention. That got me thinking about what you need to know as an inventor to get a patent, licensing and such. And what I found was this great Web site!

This handbook is divided into 11 sections, with an extra section devoted to Resources. Here’s some of what you’ll learn:

What is Intellectual Property? – Here you will learn the four classes of intellectual property. They are patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret. What’s the difference? Well, check out this section and you'll find out!

What Can Be Patented? – There are three different patents that can be granted: Utility Patents, Design Patents and Plant Patents. Since a patent is a product of the legal system, there are some very specific guidelines for those three types of patents. Find out more here!

Is My Invention Worth Patenting? – How do you know if your invention is worth patenting? This section will tell you the questions you need to ask yourself before you start the patenting process and spend any money.

How Do I License My Invention? – Here you will learn how to license your inventions, as well as, how to watch out for scam artists who want to steal your ideas!

The other sections cover raising capital, making a business plan, conducting patent searches and even how to prove the idea is yours. So, if you’ve invented some useful, nifty little gadget or if you're thinking about making something, you’ll find a lot of great information on how to go about the patenting process right here. Check it out!

Here's one from my wife! She shot this when we were in the Smokies last week. We liked the photo so much, we decided to turn it into wallpaper for you!

Smoky Mountain Stream

I shot this after a rain storm the night before. Lots of water, lots of great color in the trees and a little climbing down slippery boulders to grab this one!

Smoky Mountain Snowy Pine

Are you seeing a theme yet?! This was shot earlier this year. I loved how the snow and ice were clinging to this pine tree branch.
