Quick Tips

Temporary Vista Files

Are you one of the many users now using a Windows Vista computer? If you said yes, then answer me this: do you use Internet Explorer 7 as your main Web browser? If so, are you having a little trouble figuring out how to delete all your temporary Internet files? We have preached on this topic before for Windows XP and it's just as important with Vista. (Just in case you're not sure, temporary Internet files are files used by your computer to save certain information about the Web sites you visit. If you delete them on a regular basis, it will drastically improve your computer's overall performance). Alright, with all of that said, let's find out how you can do this with IE 7 in Vista!

There are two different ways you can do this. First, in Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options and under the Browsing History section, click on Delete. Then beside the Temporary Internet Files option, click the Delete Files button. Click Yes to confirm and the files will then be deleted. The second option is to click on the Start button and type "disk" into the search box below it. In the results, find Disk Cleanup and click on it. Choose the drive you want to clean out and then click OK. Next, checkmark the box next to Temporary Internet Files, click OK and then click on the Delete Files button.

On a side note, another way you can get rid of your temporary Internet files is to use the CCleaner program, but I would recommend using the other methods first. Also, if you would like to view the files you're deleting before you actually go through with it, you can do so by clicking on the View Files option first, before going on to delete them. That way, you can see what you're actually getting rid of and save anything you need to beforehand. Either way, this is something you should do regularly so that your computer will work at its best. Now, go on and give it a try!

National Geographic Shows You How!

Amazing Software Takes The Mystery Out Of Digital Photography!

All Your Questions Answered!

Friends And Family Will Think You're A Pro!

Hey everyone! Steve here - and I've just GOT to tell you about this fantastic software I found! It's called National Geographic Guide To Digital Photography and I'm just super-enthusiastic about this one!  I've never - and I really do mean NEVER seen a better resource for ANYONE shooting digital! This answers all the most common questions from camera types, to taking better photos, to digital darkrooms - it's all covered! I guess I shouldn't be surprised - National Geographic may know a thing or two great images!

National Geographic Digital Photo Guide

After happily reviewing this super-friendly software, I've decided this CD is absolutely essential material for anyone with any kind of digital camera - point and shoots, advanced compacts, or digital SLRs, this has you covered! Plus, I love that it's super-easy to understand and use! It's literally like having one of the world's top photographers standing over your shoulder explaining how to get better photos!

The eight chapters cover a TON of important information that's going to turn anyone who uses it a better photographer - you won't be able to avoid it! After you're done with this program, if you don't see a HUGE difference in the quality of your photos, send it back to me within 60 days for a refund! That's how confident I am in this - Trust me - learn the techniques on the CD and you, your friends, and your family are going to be absolutely blown away at your photos!

This fantastic interactive CD ROM program starts off with an amazingly informative chapter that teaches you the fundamentals of photography. For example, do you know the secret 11 rules for taking great photos? Do you understand the way light works to create color? Do you understand how the shutter works? Want to learn the secrtes of getting properly focused photos? Want to know lens basics - what to look for, what to avoid, and what to use? How about the 7 best composition tips? You guessed it - it's all in the very first chapter!

Oh, and just wait till you dig into the chapter on the cameras themselves! I know for a fact there are many so-called "pros" who could learn quite a bit from this section! Want to learn how digital camera sensors work - and what's best for you? Confused about megapixels? You won't be anymore! Want to know what the best type of digital camera is for you? How about how sensor size affects the way your lens works? Want to know the 3 most common sensor sizes - why one is better than the others? How about what lens is right for you (critical for point and shoots where you can't change 'em)? What about image formats - should you shoot RAW? Jpeg? Tiff? Oh, do you know the best type of batteries for digital cameras? How about the secret to picking the right memory cards? All covered in chapter 2!

National Geographic Digital Photo Guide

Of course, you also need to know HOW to use the camera, and this covers it like crazy! Whew - wait till you see the info covered! Do you know the secret for getting the best exposures with your digital camera? Do you know how to use its histogram display to get perfect exposures every time? Want to learn how to set your white balance so your color looks amazing photo after photo? Do you know the 5 reasons your digital photos look noisy / grainy? Want to learn the pro trick of combining two photos with different exposures to get one amazing shot? Want to know the secret to shooting amazing panoramics? All of this is in chapter 3!

Once you have the photos, how to you make them look their very best? I've always said that half the process is shooting a great scene, the other half is in the digital darkroom!

For example, do you know the secret of making your photo "pop" with your digital darkroom? Want to learn how to use levels and curves to make a flat, dull photo look dramatic and amazing? Do you know how to make your photos explode with fantastic color? Have unintended stuff in your photo you want to remove - this tells you how! Do you understand how layers work? - This explains them better than I've ever seen! Want to know the secret to making your photos sharper? Wanna learn an amazing trick Ansel Adams used to make your eye stay on a photo? Do you know the best file format to save in? This tells all!

National Geographic Digital Photo Guide

What about printing? After the photo is shot and the image looks great on your screen, you need to print the thing! What paper is best? What resolution do you need for an 8x10? 5x7? ect? Want the secret to getting your prints to look like what you see on your monitor? It's all here!

Whew, I think you get the idea! I could write a book about this one - it's loaded! This will be one CD you pop back into your computer time and again as a reference - it's really well done, super easy to understand, and a true must-have for each and every digital photographer!

Q:
I got an iPod for my birthday from my kids and I finally have all my music loaded on it and all of that good stuff. Now, do you have any tips I can use for keeping my playlists organized? I would like to create different lists for different activities I do, but I don't want them to get all messy. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

A:
First of all, welcome to the wonderful world of iPods! I'm sure you're enjoying it as much as everyone else who has one does. This is a very good question, because in a day and age when music players are so popular, it's typical to have a huge collection of music on just one device and it's too easy to let it "go crazy" and get all jumbled together. This tip is good for anyone who has any type of music player. It doesn't have to be an iPod. If you have an MP3 player or if you just have a lot of music stored on your computer, you can use these organizational tips as well.

Below are six tips you can use to keep your playlists organized and neat. The tips will also help you in understanding what you need to do to follow up your proper playlists. If you follow these tricks, you will have the best music collection in town! Plus, you will be able to find particular songs much faster and sometimes, you just can't beat that. Okay, here we go!

1.) Create Subfolders - One of the most important things to do when making playlists is to create subfolders that will stay on your hard drive. What do I mean by subfolders? Well, you should put all of your music into different categories. You can either separate it by genre or whichever way you'd like to do it. Create a new folder for each type. For instance, one folder for country, one for pop, one for classical and so on. Don't just keep all of your music in the main music folder (My Music) on your C: drive. Subfolders are definitely the better way to go.

2.) Check Your ID3 Tags - First of all, ID3 tags are used to store the important information about your music files, such as the song title, the artist name, the album name, etc. It's also the information that shows up on the screen of your iPod or MP3 player. (Read here for more information on ID3 tags). Sometimes when you put music onto your player, it comes through all wrong. So, make sure you take the time to edit your ID3 tags correctly. Now, you may need a software program to help you do this and one good example is called TagScanner, among others.

3.) Have Proper Music Management Software - It's pertinent that you have the best music management software for yourself and for your music player. There are several you can choose from. If you have an iPod, you probably use iTunes, but some other options are Windows Media Player, MediaMonkey and MusicMatch Jukebox. Each program brings its own features, so you'll just have to decide what all you want and then go get it!

4.) Keep It Legal - If you're using an illegal music download program, you may get some files that come through in an odd way. They may have a weird file name and the songs may also sound a little different than the original version. You don't want that, do you? Yes, you may have to pay for a good online music service, but it's well worth it in the end. Good examples are again, iTunes and there's always Napster.

5.) Create Proper Playlists - As was stated in the question, it's fun to make different playlists for the different activities you're going to be doing. This is also a perfect way to keep your music organized. If you combine certain songs together, you'll come up with some pretty jammin' playlists, along with keeping them neat and tidy. Another thing you can do is just create playlists from the subfolders you created in step one. Keeping all of your music in separate categories is the perfect way to stay organized when it comes to your tunes.

6.) Your Hard Drive Size - Depending on how much music you download onto your computer, it's important to have a hard drive that will be able to handle it all. Running out of room will certainly mess up your organized music files. Yes, you may have more than one hard drive on your computer, but it's not ideal to store some of your files on one hard drive and the rest on the other. It's important to have all of your music files together in one spot, so just make sure you have enough room. If you think you're going to run out soon, delete some songs you don't listen to very often or just stop downloading!

There you go. Hopefully these tips will help keep your music collection in line and in order. Yes, if you follow all of these steps, it will take you quite a bit of time to complete your organized music collection, but trust me, it will be worth it in the end. Now, get going, my music lovers!

Tip of the Day

Social Bookmarking

I know most of you have probably heard of bookmarking and some of you probably know what I'm talking about when I say social networking, but what about social bookmarking? Do those three things even have anything to do with each other? Well, the answer to that is yes and no. Allow me to explain!

When you bookmark a Web site, you're pretty much adding it to your Favorites list (in your Web browser) so that you'll be able to find it easier and faster the next time you want to visit it. That way, you don't have to take up so much time finding it again on the world wide Web. Now, I'm willing to guess that most of you bookmark a lot of Web sites on a regular basis. Am I right? So, once you have all those sites compiled, what are you going to do with them? Wouldn't it be nice to be able to share them with other people who may have the same interests as you?

Well, that's where social bookmarking comes into play. It allows you to share your bookmarks with other Internet users in a collaborative sort of way. Usually, social bookmarking takes place on sites where the users can create an account for their bookmarks. It's also helpful to do it on sites that allow you to insert keywords for the types of bookmarks you add. That way, they all can be organized and set into categories that other users can easily search through.

Social bookmarking gives you the chance to see all of the Web sites you may have missed thus far. By seeing what other users submit in certain categories, you can view the ones that fit your interests the best. You won't have to waste your time looking at other sites that don't interest you. Also, by being able to see all the sites that other people add, you can start to accumulate a whole slew of new resources. It's all so helpful and you certainly can't complain about that!

Once you become a part of a social bookmarking site, you become a member of that community. You and all of the other users are there for the same reason and you can help each other out in finding sites that will benefit all of you. It also makes searching the Web so much easier and quicker. Another great thing is that once you're part of a site, you can access it from any computer and any browser. That way, you're never limited in seeing the social bookmarks you've been waiting for.

Now, you're probably wondering how you can get started. There are a few social bookmarking sites online today, with one of the most popular being del.icio.us. You can create your own account there and once you're all set up, you can search by keywords to find other bookmarks that may interest you. This site also has lists for the "Popular" and "Recent" categories, so you can dive right into your searching. You can find bookmarks for all types of things on here too. From software to design to photography to shopping, it's all here!

Another great social bookmarking site is digg.com. We've told you about this one before in our newsletter and you can read here for some basic information about it. Digg is mostly geared toward technology and science, but if you're into that, it will be perfect for you. You can leave comments (diggs) on the site as well, which makes it all a little more interesting. One more popular social bookmarking site is reddit.com. It is a great source for up and coming online content. Reddit also has a very unique and easy voting system. Other social bookmarking sites that may be worth a look are Furl, StumbleUpon and Slashdot.

Now, of course, there are always pros and cons to everything and social bookmarking is no exception. If social bookmarking is going to work properly, it takes a lot of organization to make sure all of the information is divided up correctly and is relevant. Sometimes the sites fall short on that and it can make your research a lot more difficult. On the other hand, these sites allow you to gain a bigger knowledge base, all while helping others do the same. Social bookmarking is a feel good type of thing and if done right, it can benefit a lot of people. Oh yeah!

Today's Feature

Small, Sharp Pictures

Here's what happens: You're working on a really great image you shot with your high resolution digital camera. It looks great. It's so sharp, you could cut yourself on it. Then, someone asks you to e-mail it to them so they can see it too.

Since it's a high resolution shot, you decide that you should probably resize it first. You go into your imaging program, click the Image Size menu option and shrink it down. (For more on making your pictures the right size, check out this link).

Okay, so you've resized your image and now you're looking at it. Somehow, it seems to have lost a bit of its sharpness in the process. Now, you could run your sharpening tool again. That's certainly an option, but we've found another way that really works well. That is, if you have a Sharpen Edges filter.

So, open your imaging software and check under your filters. Look for a Sharpen Edges filter and if you're lucky enough to have one, give it a click. Usually, that's all it takes to make your image nice and crisp again. We found this out while resizing images for our monthly wallpaper and it worked out great. Give it a try next time you need to resize a large image.

After:

Yeah, that's better (note the ears and face area!)

Happy shooting!

I couldn’t wait to share this site with you. This is my current brainteaser. I’ve been challenging myself to solve this Russian Puzzle and now I want to share it with you.

It’s very easy to get started. Just click the piece of the puzzle you want to use first. If you want to rotate the puzzle piece, you need to press the Shift key down while clicking.

When you get all the pieces in the right order, a message reading “Congratulations” will pop up on your screen and that’s how you will know that you solved it. For more information on this puzzle and its creator, you may want to check out the information below the puzzle as well.

I still haven’t solved this puzzle, but I will be working on it diligently until I do. If you liked this puzzle, you may want to surf around the rest of the site too. You’ll find articles on toys, puzzles and even real life mysteries.

I liked the article on the ancient Greek Antikythera. It’s a device that plotted the movement of the heavens. Very neat!

Alright, I have to get back to trying to solve this puzzle before it drives me batty. Enjoy!

Here's one from my wife! She shot this when we were in the Smokies last week. We liked the photo so much, we decided to turn it into wallpaper for you!

Smoky Mountain Stream

I shot this after a rain storm the night before. Lots of water, lots of great color in the trees and a little climbing down slippery boulders to grab this one!

Smoky Mountain Snowy Pine

Are you seeing a theme yet?! This was shot earlier this year. I loved how the snow and ice were clinging to this pine tree branch.
