Computer Tips [ Amazing Paper PC + Smart eBay Bidding + A Better Map Site + Messed Up E-Mail ] 11/24/08

Quick Tips

Raise Your Keyboard

Today, I have one question for you: "How do you feel about the height of your keyboard?" Okay, so that may seem like a pretty odd question, but believe me, it's legit for this quick tip! I'm talking about the height of your keyboard as it sits on your desk (or wherever you may keep it).

Some of you may know about this, but the rest of you may not, so I thought this would be a neat little entry for today's newsletter. Go ahead and flip your keyboard over on its back. What do you see? Besides some wording, etc., you should see two clips on either side of the keyboard. If you pull those clips out and then set your keyboard back down, you will notice that it gains a little bit of height. Wow, who knew?!

Those special clips are there to help you get the most comfortable feel for your keyboard. If it's better for your hands to be a little higher as you type, use the clips. If you try it for awhile and decide you don't like it, push the clips back in and your keyboard will then sit flat on your desk once again. It's just an easy way to achieve the best fit for all of your typing needs. Check it out!

The BEST "Talking Dictionary" Ever!

I Use This Program All The Time!

It's Absolutely Awesome!

Today Just $6.97!! Really!!

Check out the fantastic Random House Webster's Dictionary!

This program is really a must have - especially since most word processors still only have a spell check and no dictionary. This software has over 315,000 definitions (the largest number I've seen), 2,400 maps and illustrations, and over 120,000 professionally pronounced words!

What's with the word pronunciation? Just click the little "speaker" in the definition and you'll
hear the word in your computer speakers. You don't even need to have the CD in the drive to use this feature (some other dictionaries require this).

If you've ever had a word come up and just weren't sure how to pronounce it (I think we've all been there), this dictionary can take that little mystery out of your life! I love it!

What if you don't know the spelling? Don't sweat it. You can search on words in the definition! For example, let's say you need to look up affenpinscher but aren't sure on the spelling (understandable). Since you know it's a dog (well, you do now :-), you can search for definitions with the word dog in them! Cool huh? Works great too - WAY better than any spellchecker, that's for sure.

Frankly, I didn't think they could put that much into a dictionary program. I have been using this on an almost daily basis since I installed last year and I'm continuously impressed by it. I can't recommend this highly enough. When I get a new computer, this is one of the first programs to get installed.

The price? That's the best part - today it's just $6.97! (retail $29.95) Shipping is FREE if you live in the US! If you do ANY kind of writing - letters, e-mails, books, - whatever - you need this!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=359

PS - Looks like this is the last of them! This is such a great program, but it looks like our supplier isn't carrying them anymore! So, make sure you RUN to the site and grab the last of 'em!

This price will increase to $8.97 on Tuesday

You will be able to see who you are talking to almost as well as if you were sitting across from the person! Wow! It really looked great!

Q:
I like to buy things on eBay sometimes, but I never seem to win any auctions. Do you have any tips you can give me that might help me with my eBay purchases? Please help!

A:
That's an excellent question! I know a lot of you are eBay users and being one myself, I know how frustrating it can be to see an item you really want taken away from you because someone else outbid you. I also know that some of the bidding options, etc. on eBay's Web site can be a little confusing, which makes it even harder to win an auction. Well, all of that frustration and confusion is going to end today, because I've got some great tips that should really help you out the next time you want to buy something on eBay. Let's get started!

It's no surprise we all like eBay so much. I mean, they offer a little bit of everything, from clothes to cars to electronic devices to sports memorabilia to boats and everything in between. Unfortunately though, a lot of eBay shoppers are obsessed with winning auctions, which can make it pretty difficult for a new user to win anything. Plus, when you're caught in the last moments of an auction, you may feel pressured to spend more money than you originally planned on. That's when the following tips can really come in handy!

First of all, it's a good idea to research an auction before you bid on it. When you first go to eBay's Web site (www.ebay.com), click on the Advanced Search link located next to the main searching area. That will help you decide on a fair bidding price before you do anything outrageous. Just fill in all of the criteria for what you want to search for, but before you hit the Search button, make sure the "Completed listings only" box is checkmarked. That way, you'll be able to see some past bids on similar items and you can then go from there to set a decent bid on the item you want. That will also help you avoid bidding wars.

Once you have a bid in mind that you're comfortable with, you can set it and then walk away. For instance, if you research an item and find that $50 is a good bid for it, you can go right in and place that, no questions asked. You can then leave that bid in place, only adjusting it if someone overbids you. If that happens, you will receive a notification e-mail that your bid has been exceeded and you can then go in and change it. Now, what's even better about eBay is that even though you place the $50 bid, there's always a starting bid of something much lower, say $20. If that particular auction stays at $20 the whole time, you will only have to pay that amount, even though you placed a higher bid in the beginning. That method is a good way to stay out of bidding wars. Just set your price and walk away. If you don't win, chances are, someone else will be selling the same thing on down the road. Don't let yourself get caught up in the heat of bidding!

It's also a good idea to bid for an item that has very few bidders. When there aren't a lot of other bidders, you can usually get away with a very low bid. That's especially true if the auction ends in the middle of the night or on a holiday, because most people aren't around their computers during those times. You can use the Advanced Search link to help you with that as well. You may also want to look into using an automated sniping tool that will place your bid for you in the final seconds of an auction. It also keeps you hidden so that other people won't even know you're interested in an item. A good one we've come across is eSnipe.

You should also pay close attention to the person selling an item. You should check out their ratings and comments from other users before doing business with them. If a seller is new or if they've had trouble with other buyers in the past, you may want to look at other sellers who have more experience or a better reputation on eBay. If you deal with a bad seller, you could run into problems with late shipping, poor service or even no shipment at all. No one wants to deal with that kind of stuff, now do we?!

Now, if you don't like the idea of bidding, eBay also offers a Buy It Now option for a lot of their auctions. If you're happy with the price an item is set at, just hit the Buy It Now link and you'll be able to purchase it on the spot. That takes the stress out of bidding and it ensures that you'll always get the item you want. One more thing: it's a good idea to consider buying your eBay items locally. That can really save you on shipping costs or it's possible you can go and pick up the item on your own, which means no shipping costs at all!

All in all, if you do your research on an eBay item you want to buy, you'll be much better off. If you take the time to look at all the important parts, such as locality, customer service, prices, etc., you'll be all set. A little research can take you a long way when it comes to eBay shopping. Give it a whirl on your next big purchase!

MS Office

Oops! How Can I Undo That?

Okay, so the other day, we learned how to add to the Safe Senders list in MS Outlook 2003 and 2007.

But what if you've accidentally added someone to the list who shouldn't be there? How can you remove that name from the list?

It's a good question and I thought it deserved an answer, so let's get right down to business!

In Outlook 2003 or 2007, go to the Tools menu, Options choice.

Under the Preferences tab, you're looking for the Junk E-mail button.

When the Junk E-mail window opens, you need the Safe Senders tab.

In the center, you should find a list of senders you've selected as safe.

Choose the one that needs to be removed and then click on the Remove button.

Click OK twice to get back to Outlook.

Voila. It's back to blocked pictures for that sender!

Tip of the Day

PocketMod

Don’t have a fancy Pocket PC or organizer? Well, with PocketMod, you don’t need one! I discovered PocketMod just a couple of weeks ago and I haven’t stopped using mine since. Let's check it out!

So, what is a PocketMod? Believe it or not, but it’s not another electronic gadget. It’s actually just a piece of paper you can use as a personal organizer. And best of all, it's completely customizable!

Creating one for yourself is easy! Here's how:

1.) Go to http://www.pocketmod.com and click on the Start icon.

2.) You can then begin to customize your cover page. To do that, first click on the button labeled Cover. Then click on the spanner and screwdriver icon.

3.) Next, enter in your details and click on Close. Now, click and drag the cover page into the spot on your PocketMod that says Front.

4.) Okay, it’s now time to add other items! Simply repeat the same process as above for six more pages. For example, I like the Sudoku widget, the calendar and the shopping list, so I added all of those to my PocketMod. Of course, you can add whatever suits you the best. When you're finished, click on Print PocketMod to print out your organizer.

5.) Once you’ve printed your PocketMod, it’s time to fold it. On the PocketMod homepage (or, here if you prefer), there's a video that shows you how to fold it. Just follow the directions and you'll be all set!

You’re now completely organized. Yes!

The Route Planner

Need directions to go somewhere? Well, then you should try using The Route Planner to plan your drive! It’s really easy to use and not only does it give you directions, but it shows you your route side by side with the directions. Let's see what we've got!

To get started, type in your starting address at the top of the page and then the address you want to plan a route for. Next, choose the language you want from the drop down box. The default is English, but the other languages include: French, German, Japanese and Spanish. After you’ve selected a language, all you need to do is click on the Get Directions button.

It will then generate directions to your destination, side by side with a map showing you the route. You can view the map in three different ways. The default is Map and it looks like a regular map you’d see in an Atlas. Your next option is Satellite, which looks like the satellite weather maps you see on TV. My favorite option is Hybrid, which is a combination of the two. You get both a regular map and a satellite map together!

This is a great tool for planning the route to your next destination. Check it out!
