Are you one of WorldStart's message board users? (If you're not, you really should sign up. It's free and it's a great resource if you're ever having computer trouble!) If you are, I'm willing to bet that you sometimes use it to look for help with a specific problem. Am I right? After all, that's what the message board is for! It's there to help you when you're down and out with your own troubleshooting techniques. Now, tell me, when you're looking for that one special topic, do you sometimes spend hours going through all the posts, just hoping for something to come along? Well, why not speed up the process a little bit? Keep reading to find out how you can do just that!

On our message board, we have this wonderful thing called a search box. Yes, that's right. You can use that box to search through everything and anything our members have posted. You can either search the entire message board as a whole or you can search within one category (PC Ask and Answer Questions, PC Tips & Tricks, etc). Wow, that would make it quite a bit easier, huh?!

So, if you'd like to search the whole board all at once, log in to your account and along the very top, you'll see a line of links. Look over to the right and you'll see one titled as Search. Click on the down arrow next to it and a search box will pop up. Type in a few keywords and then hit Go. On the other hand, if you just want to search within one category, click on the one you want to look through, look over to the right and you'll see a link that says "Search This Forum." Click on the down arrow next to it and a search box will come up for you. Again, type in a few keywords and hit Go. Whichever means you go by, this is the perfect way to let the results come to you. Give it a try, all you message board lovers!

STOP RIGHT THERE!

The Shocking Truth About Your Hard Drive!

Don't Throw Out That Old Hard Drive!!

Don't Give Away Your Old Computer!

You Gotta Read This - It'll Scare The Heck Outta Ya!

Recent studies show that 74% of hard drives sold, given away, or thrown out (in the computer or out) contain data that can be easily read and recovered - and 36% of those hard drives had even been reformatted. You absolutely, positively, have to permanently get that data off of there!!

Do you have an old computer you're thinking about giving away? Maybe an old hard drive that needs to be thrown out? Well, if you do, you MUST GET THAT DATA OFF THERE!!!!

Well, we have some really easy to use software that will keep you safe called DriveScrubber. Just pop the CD into your computer (or make a floppy if you still have a drive for one of those) and reboot. Even if you can't boot to Windows, you can still erase that drive with this software!

Think about it - you wouldn't toss paperwork with credit card, bank, or social security numbers in the trash without shredding the heck out of 'em would you? Of course not! However, day in and day out, people toss out old computers and think that just deleting or formatting a drive is going to get rid of all the personal info they had on it - not a chance!

WARNING - When you delete a file, it's not really gone. You might want to read that last sentence again because it's really important. The area where the file lives on your hard drive simply gets tagged as free space, but until it's overwritten, that data is VERY recoverable. I formatted a test drive and ran recovery software on it awhile ago just to see what would happen. Nearly EVERYTHING was easily recoverable! No problem at all!

If you've ever used your computer to check on your banking, buy a product online, or anything that involves your personal info, then that info might be easily available when you get rid of your old hardware! Yikes!

Don't think it can happen to you? Well, two MIT students did a study. They went and purchased 158 used hard drives for less than $1000 from a web swap-meet type site. When they went through the drives, they found over 5,000 credit card numbers, medical reports, lots of personal and corporate financial information, and gigs of personal e-mail. And get this - 60% of the drives had been formatted!!!

There are people who look for old computers at the curb or in the dumpster just to pull info off the hard drive or sell the drives to others! Plus, if you just "donate" an old computer you have no idea what really is going to happen to it! If this doesn't scare the heck out of you, then you shouldn't be using a computer!

Once you insert the Drive Scrubber disk, your computer will boot to the CD or the floppy, and has an easy to use interface that makes wiping a drive a snap. Just select the drive and select the "erase" button. ALL the info on the drive will be gone - permanently and forever! You can still reformat the drive and install Windows again once this is done - but any info you had on the drive will be completely gone. No worries about anyone ever using your hard drive or old computer to steal you personal info! It's great!

I personally have a couple of old hard drives sitting around that I just didn't want to throw out. Now I'll be able to completely erase them and toss them into the trash knowing that no one will EVER be able to recover any of my personal data from that drive.

Your cost for all this protection? Just $8.97 and US shipping is FREE! Sure, it's not a program that you'll use every day, but everyone with a computer WILL need to use it someday! For this kind of money, it's insane not to be safe. Check it out:

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4175

PS - This price is ONLY good today, 12-01-2008 - first thing Tuesday the price will increase to $12.97! Get yours today!

Finally!

Plug ALL Your Gadgets In!

7-Port Super Slim Compact Hub w/LEDs!!!

Turn 1 USB port into - Get this - 7 of 'em!

This hub has been selling like CRAZY - our supplier can't keep 'em in stock and neither can we! This expands a single USB port to seven! Not only that, it's also a powered unit, so big devices like scanners, printers, webcams, etc. run perfectly! You get super-fast high speed transfer rates - up to 480 Mbps - WOW!!!!

I mean, let's face it - you can never have enough places to put your USB toys! Having a hub on your desk is just soooo much easier than crawling around on the floor, switching plugs, trying to figure out what this USB plug goes to, if you can be without that gadget, jumping back on the floor when you unplugged the wrong thing - YUK!

Plus this is a powered hub! Why do ya care? Well, that means it can run EVERYTHING! Non-powered hubs usually are only good for keyboard, mice - low power accessories. This baby is POWERED so it can run everything - printers, scanners, MP3 players - if it plugs into a USB port, this will run it!

Oh, and setup is a super-easy! Just plug it in and it's ready to go. That's all there is to it! Even the most novice computer users can do that ;-)

Everyone who tries a USB hub says the same thing - "Wow, what a difference - I can't believe how much I love this thing! Instead of crawling around on the floor swapping plugs every 10 minutes, I can have ALL my USB devices plugged in at once!"

As if all that wasn't enough, we have about the best price on the planet on these right now - just $14.97 today (12-01-2008) and FREE US Shipping! This has a list price of $49.99, so it's a fantastic deal! Check it out:

The price will increase to $19.97 tomorrow!

Computers 101

Q:
What is Windows SteadyState?

A:
You know, I was wondering the same thing! I came across Windows SteadyState last week when I was writing a tip for the Windows Vista parental controls, but at that time, I didn't have a chance to look into it more. So, when I received this question in my e-mail Inbox yesterday morning, I knew I had to write about it right away! I'm sure there are several of you out there wondering what it is too, so we'll just all learn together! After you're done reading this article, I think you'll have a better understanding of what Windows SteadyState really is. Let's check it out!

To begin, SteadyState is mostly used with shared access computing. So, what is shared access? Well, it's basically when one or more computers serve multiple users all from one location. For example, the computers in schools, Internet cafes, libraries and even in a few homes. SteadyState was created by Microsoft for the main purpose of keeping all those shared access computers running smoothly and without any trouble. Also, with it, the computers will stay the way they're supposed to, no matter who uses them from day to day.

With shared access computers, you never know what sort of condition they will be in by the time everyone is done using them. Each computer probably has several users on it throughout the day and more than likely, each one did something different, depending on the type of work they had to do. So, by the end of the day, those computers could be filled with downloaded files, newly installed programs, the normal settings could be changed, there could be some viruses or spyware on the system and so on. Basically, a shared access computer is always filled with different items and it could be bogged down for various reasons.

Because of that, you need something that will be able to clean up those computers and get them ready for the next day. And that's where SteadyState comes into play. With SteadyState, you're given an easy way to manage multiple users, you can set in place a locked down platform that will make each computer more stable for shared computing and there's even an easy way to keep all of your settings in place, meaning no one will be able to alter them.

Like I said earlier, SteadyState really comes in handy for certain locations, including schools, Internet cafes and libraries. In a typical day, the computers at those types of places will be used by hundreds of people. Luckily, SteadyState comes with a design that fits each of those locations the best. So, for example, if you're managing the computers at a school, you can use the specialized part of SteadyState that works the best for computers in a classroom. Or, if you have shared access computers in your home (maybe you have one for yourself and a couple for your children), there's also a special design in SteadyState for that. Each one really fits each location to a tee and it makes managing your computer so much easier!

So, how can you get SteadyState? Well, I will give you that information in a second, but there are a few things you'll want to do before you install it on your main computer. First, you'll want to double check the system requirements. SteadyState only works with Windows XP with the SP2 and Vista. It works for XP Professional, Home and even the Tablet PC edition. Now, you may already be using a utility called the Shared Computer Toolkit, but you'll want to upgrade to SteadyState, as it is the newer version. You'll want to uninstall the Shared Computer Toolkit first as well. You will also need to defrag your computer before you install SteadyState. That's just to ensure that your computer is optimized and ready to go.

When you're ready, you can click here to install SteadyState. Just click on the blue Download Now button and follow the directions. It will bring up a wizard for you to follow and it's not that long of a process. For more information on everything we've discussed today, you can visit this Web site. It should answer any additional questions you may have. Once you have SteadyState installed, you'll be all set and ready to go with your new shared access computers. Check it out today!

MS Office

I'll Reply to That Later

Do you have an e-mail in MS Outlook you know you need to reply to, but you just don't have the time right now?

I know you hate to just leave the e-mail sitting there though, because let's face it, there's a very good chance you'll completely forget about it.

So, what can you do to ensure you address the situation on time?

Well, I can think of a couple of things. First, you could set up an appointment for the message.

Yep, that's right, I said appointment. You can turn that e-mail into an appointment so that Outlook reminds you to take care of the situation before it's too late.

To create an appointment for your message, simply drag and drop it into the Calendar section on the Outlook Bar (or drag it to the Calendar folder).

A new appointment will open up with the body of the message already there. Next, simply complete your normal steps for setting up appointments (don't forget to set enough reminder time for yourself to get the job done) and hit the Close and Save button.

With the appointment set, you'll be reminded to handle the message just like you're reminded about any other appointment you create.

A second way to get Outlook to give you a helping hand when it comes to that message you just can't forget is to use message flags.

To flag a message, select it and right click.

In older versions of MS Outlook, you'll see this:

From the menu that opens, choose Follow Up.

The Flag for Follow Up dialogue window will then open, allowing you to set up some basic information.

When you've set everything to your liking, click OK.

Now, for those of you working with Outlook 2007, here's what you'll find.

When you right click on the message, you'll find that the Follow Up choice opens as a submenu.

You can quickly pick one of the Quick Flag times offered or choose Add Reminder, which will open the following dialogue window:

Set your preferences and click OK.

Outlook will remind you about this item if the flag has not been cleared by the due date/time you set. (That's right, this option isn't a reminder before the time you set, rather it actually lets you know right after the time it was due).

When a message has a Follow Up Flag, there's a red flag displayed with the message (in Outlook 2007, instead of a red flag, you'll see the text "Follow Up") as a visual reminder that the e-mail requires your attention.

Once you've completed the job, right click on the message again and choose Flag Complete or Mark Complete (depending on your version of Outlook).

To remove a Follow Up Flag, completely right click on the message and choose Clear Flag from the menu.

There you have it! Two ways you can deal with an e-mail message later on, without it slipping your mind. Yep, Outlook's got you covered!

Tip of the Day

Testing 1, 2, 3

If you have the need to test either a recently purchased external microphone or if you want to test one you already have (external or internal), this is the tip for you! It's a good idea to test your microphone hardware every once in awhile, just so you can be sure everything is working properly. If you use your mic quite often, this is even more important for you!

Alright, let's get started! For Windows XP, make sure your external microphone is plugged in and ready to go (if you have an internal one, you should be set to go) and then click on Start, All Programs, Accessories, Entertainment, Volume Control. The Master Volume box will come up and you will want to go to the Options menu at the top and choose Properties.

Now, select the radio button that says Recording and click OK. Another window will appear and you'll just want to make sure the Microphone channel is selected. Go ahead and move the mic volume slider to around the middle section, just so it's placed in that general area. Now, just leave that box open.

Next, we're going to need to go into the Control Panel, so click on Start, Control Panel and click on the Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices link. Choose Sounds and Audio Devices and click on the Voice tab. Now, under the Voice recording area, click on the Test Hardware button and the testing will begin.

The Sound Hardware Test Wizard will come up. Just click on the Next button and wait for the wizard to complete the tests of your sound hardware. It could take a couple minutes or so. When that is done, the Microphone Test window will come up on your screen. Now, go ahead and speak into your mic or you can just tap it lightly if you wish. The Recording Volume slider should move up and down in response to the sound you are making through your microphone. When you're all done testing your mic, just click on Finish and the wizard will close.

Just in case this happens to you, while you're using the wizard, an alert box may pop up telling you that the "Run a DLL as an App" program is blocked and it will ask you if you want to unblock it. You can if you want, but it is not necessary to unblock it for the mic test to function correctly.

You can follow similar instructions for older versions of Windows as well. The only difference may be that you'll go to Start, Programs, Accessories, Entertainment and choose Sound Recorder instead of Volume Control. From there on out, the above directions are very similar and you will be fine if you just follow them. Go on and give your microphone a little test today!

Cards that give back

With Thanksgiving behind us, it's time to focus on Christmas!

One of the first things most will do is send out Christmas cards. You could head down to the store to buy your cards. Of course, the cards you buy there probably won't be spectacular.

Or, if you have the time and inclination, you can make your own cards. Personally, though, I would rather spend the time decorating my house!

Well, there is a third solution. You could visit CardsThatGive. The premise is simple. You buy Christmas cards. Some or all of the profits benefit charity!

You can browse through the cards to find one that you like. Or, search by charity. You're sure to find one you want to support.

Buying cards through CardsThatGive is a great way to help a charity. It's also a good way to help yourself. Some cards are tax deductible. And all of them are unique!

Free Download of the Day: Some of the older games are still the most fun. Yahtzee has always been a blast. Now, bring it to your computer.

Tip on the site: Your computer relies on its clock for a number of processes. When that clock is broken, you've got problems.
