Computer Tips [ Amazing Tips About New Windows 7 + Slant Your Pictures + Friday Funnies ] 11/07/08

Computer Tipswww.worldstart.com No, this isn't Steve. You can tell because Steve never wears a suit :-)

Quick Tips

IE 7 Cache Limit

Do you use Internet Explorer 7 for all of your Web browsing needs? Are you a new Internet Explorer 7 user? Either way, among other things, you have probably noticed some changes in IE 7's cache size, compared to version 6. And that makes sense, because there's a huge difference! Microsoft basically revamped the cache feature in IE 7 and they did it all for your own good. Keep reading and I promise I'll explain everything!

First of all, in Internet Explorer 6, the default cache limit was set to 10 percent of your overall hard drive size. I know that may not seem like a whole lot, but when you consider how big hard drives are made these days, it adds up rather quickly. If you have a large hard drive, your 10 percent will also be a big number and the more you fill up that space, the more it will slow down your computer. Do you now see where I'm going with this? Luckily, you can set your own cache limit in IE 7 so that you won't ever have to worry about any slowdowns.

To create your own default cache size in Internet Explorer 7, go to Tools, Internet Options and then click on the General tab. Next, click on the Settings button, located under the Browsing History section. You can then set your cache limit under the heading of "Disk space to use." You can tap out at 1 GB, but it's recommended you don't go higher than 250 MB. Microsoft suggests you set it to 50 MB, but that's up to you. Just remember, the bigger your cache limit, the more you put yourself at risk for slowdowns and corruptions. Reset yours today!

WOW!Micro Innovations 306 Joules Universal Notebeook Surge Protector

SERIOUS Laptop Surge Protection!

Incredible High-End Surge Protector Deal!

Protects Power, Phone, AND Network!

Best Laptop Surge Protector We've Ever Offered!

Amazing Low Price Too!!

OK, I gotta tell ya - we just got an incredible deal on a very limited number of Micro Innovations Laptop Surge Protectors - and they are absolutely AWESOME!

I don't know about you, but I have a LOT invested in my laptop, software, and all the data on my hard drive. I have music, irreplaceable photos, TONS of data - if I was hit by a surge it would be a mess to clean it all up! I do my backups, but still - who wants their expensive laptop knocked out by a surge?

Well, these fantastic surge protectors are just what EVERY laptop user should have hooked up to their computer - period!! I've never seen a more ideal surge protector for laptop users! It's small and plugs in-line with your laptop power adapter! Once you attach it, you never have to think about it again! Oh, and not only does it have power line protection, it also has a retractable cord for phone line and network cable protection (you use an adapter depending on which you want - phone line or network cable)!

Micro Innovations 306 Joules Universal Notebeook Surge Protector

Now, when people think about surges, they usually think about the power plugs - after all, that's the most obvious place for a power surge to come though. Well, in my experience, that's not always the case. I've seen computers decimated by a phone line / network cable surges - and more often than surges though the power cord!

Oh, and of course those who were hit in each case never thought that it would happen to them - Geeze! Think about it - phone lines and cable lines have NO surge protection at all, yet are exposed to the same harsh conditions outside as the power cables! An virtually NO ONE bothers to protect them! That's just CRAZY!

This surge protector absolutely great to use when your laptop is at home, but it really shines when you're on the road! I don't know about you, but I'm always worried about plugging my computer into strange hotel plugs - you never know how the wiring is in those places! Next time your neighbor flips on the hair dryer it might trigger a powerful surge that's deadly to your computer!

Oh, and networks in hotels? Now that's horror-movie scary for your laptop! Who knows what kinds of weird equipment is getting plugged into that network? Some guy's old computer might be ready to fry - and cause a network surge to takes yours with it! Plus, who knows if there's any kind of network surge protection in the hotel at all? To me, hooking up a network cable to any hotel internet connection is asking to fry unless you have a surge protector like this!

Oh, I almost forgot! This also features a "noise filter" - basically feeding your laptop nice clean power and helping it last longer. Heck, it even has a LED to let you know that everything is working right!

OK, what about price? That's another fantastic thing about this deal! This is a $40 surge protector but your cost is just $14.97 and US shipping is FREE!!! After all, isn't your laptop with $14.97 to protect? I know mine is!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4724

WARNING! This was a VERY limited quantity buy! PLEASE run to the site as soon as you can to get in on this offer. We're asking that you limit your purchase to just 2 per customer. This is, by far, the best deal we've ever seen on a surge protector - don't miss out!

Did you know that if you were born before 1930, you have already lived past the life expectancy age at the time of your birth? We have got to stay healthy if we are going to live longer, more fulfilling lives!

I can hear your right now probably saying to yourself, " doesn't staying healthy require expensive doctor visits, a nutritionist, and pricey gym memberships?" Nope! Not with the help of the fabulous software that we found for you today! It is called Personalized Health Watch, and with this glorious program you will get healthy and stay healthy without the expense of doctors and nutritionists. In fact, this program is so good that it is trusted by registered dietitians!

Wow! this program is so easy to set up and start using. In a few moments, you will be able to create your own personal profile. And when I say moments, I really mean moments. I filled out a short questionnaire asking for my name, age, weight, body build, gender, and family history, and I was all set to begin monitoring my health! What this profile does is allow you to create a health profile that is taylored to your body and lifestyle. Normally, these kind of taylor-made profiles could put quite the hole in your pocket! Oh, and another feature I love is the extensive food database. It even has stored in it the sodium content of my favorite fast food sandwiches. So, when I go to McDonald's in the morning on my way to work and splurge on my Sausage McMuffin, I can find the exact sandwich within the database and mark it on my food log! This really makes cheating on a diet hard!!! But for those of you who are good about staying away from fast food, this extensive data base has pretty much every food that I could think of stored in it (from Avocado to Zucchini Bread!)!! If you eat it, you will be able to find it in the food log section!

Another great thing about this program is that it has a wealth of knowledge and facts built into it. There are several charts and graphs which will give you quick references to life expectancy ages to ideal heart rates while exercising. In addition, there are a ton of interesting noteworthy facts listed on the page, which really provide great insight to our health. Oh- and I can't forget to tell you that this section even has awesome audio. All you have to do is click the button and a voice will explain the significance of a graph or fact, ultimately giving you a great depth of knowledge!

I have been "testing" this program for about 2 weeks now. Everyday I monitor my food intake, my exercises, and my blood pressure. In addition, I started taking a daily multivitamin! And let me tell ya, not only am I noticing that I am eating healthier and sticking to my exercise routine because I am recording everything, but I also have a ton of energy and feel great! This is by far the healthiest I have been in years- and its only been two weeks!!! You just gotta check out this program!

Need An Easy Way To Get Data Off Your Old Hard Drive?

How About A Really Cool Way To Backup Data?

Ohh, Keep reading, you're definitely gonna want to check this out ~

WOW - we just came across the handiest little USB Cable Adapter that you're absolutely going to love! Check out these two great uses:

Easily retrieve information from your old hard drive ~
This is super easy, you simply hook the cable to your old hard drive (or even a laptop) and then plug into a USB port on your current computer and "presto" ~ your old drive now shows up as an external hard drive. How simple and easy is that? You can now access any and all the information you have on that drive and save it to your current computer, a flash drive, whatever ~ super simple, anyone can do this!

Turn an internal drive into a convenient external drive for back-ups ~
Do you know what external hard drives are going for compared to internal drives? Well, a 500GB internal drive is about $150.00 and the 500GB external drive is about $279.99 ~ yikes! The main difference is the nice case on the external drive so when it sits on your desk, it looks pretty. I gotta tell you, for a backup drive I don't need it to look pretty ~ I just want it to hold my data and then sit in the desk drawer quietly until I need it again ;-)

Now, this is where this USB Cable Adapter comes in really handy. Again, just hook the adapter up to your "internal" drive (it doesn't have to be inside your computer) and then plug into an existing USB port on your computer. Again, easy-peasy! The drive will show up as an external drive on your computer and you can easily back-up all your files ~ pretty cool, huh? When you're done, you can disconnect and store the drive in a drawer ~ no need to have it taking up desk space! And, you've saved about $130.00 by using an "internal" drive as your backup drive!

If you find yourself in either of these situations, I'm telling you ~ you've got to give this a try. You won't believe how easy this really is ~ even the "non-techies" will be surprised! Oh, yeah ~ almost forgot, TODAY ONLY your cost is just $19.97 and that includes FREE shipping in the US!

Computers 101

Q:
The other day, my grandson accidentally spilled some water on my laptop. I know he didn't mean to and I cleaned it up the best I could, but I'm extremely worried about what will happen to my computer. Is there any way of saving it or what should I do next? Please help me!

A:
I know you already feel this way, but ouch, that hurts! (I'm sorry, I had to say it!) I'm sure this sort of thing has happened to all of us at one time or another. I mean, we all know that liquids and electronics do not mix well, but sometimes you can't keep spills from happening. And unfortunately, we can't blame Microsoft for this one either! But don't fret, because there's still some hope for all of us. It just depends on how much water was involved and what you did right after it happened. Let's check it all out!

Now, this type of thing can happen to any kind of gadget, including cameras, cell phones, keyboards and of course, computers. So, this tip can work for whatever device you're having trouble with, but I'm going to focus on the laptop for the person who asked today's question. Okay, I'm going to be honest and tell you your gadget may not make a full recovery, but with a little tender care, you might be able to save more than you think. Just follow these steps to see what you can do!

First, if your laptop is still turned on, turn it off immediately. You'll also want to remove any batteries, CDs, memory cards, etc. Basically, remove anything you may use to save your data and especially for laptops, remove any modular components and removable drives. Once you've got everything out, wipe off any excess water you may see on those items. Then if you're comfortable with it, it's best to disassemble the device as much as possible to get as much liquid out as you can. That's even more crucial if you can hear water moving around inside your computer. If you're not comfortable with that, you may want to find someone who can help you right away!

You need to get your laptop as dry as possible, both inside and out. If you're still worried about how dry you've really gotten it, you can try a couple of things. Of course, they're all a matter of luck, so just try them at your own discretion. For one, you can try putting your laptop in a heated area. For example, maybe place it on the dashboard of your car for an afternoon. As long as it doesn't get hotter than 150 degrees, the heat will evaporate the water. Just make sure the battery is removed from your device before you try that. You can also try just tipping your laptop upside down for as long as needed to give the water a chance to drain out.

I found a Web site that gave some other options, but they didn't sound very safe to me, so I would try the two above first, for sure! Now, if you're not comfortable with any of that, you'll want to get your laptop to a professional as soon as possible. Don't wait a day or two to "get around to it." Do it immediately! You don't have time to waste in these situations. That is, unless you don't mind paying for a brand new computer or damage control.

So, the next question is, "How can you prevent this kind of thing from happening again?" The best answer is to tell you not to keep any kind of liquid near your computer. Don't keep drinks or anything else by your computer. If you do that, you're just asking for a spill to happen. And you know how it goes, the liquid always goes right for the computer instead of the paper and pens you have sitting next to it.

For other devices (cameras, cell phones, etc.), you can keep them in plastic bags if you're going to be near water. If you're at the beach, keep your cell phone concealed so that there's no chance of water getting on it. Or, use a waterproof camera. Just taking some simple precautions will keep you from many, many headaches on down the road. If you just use some common sense and are very careful when it comes to your electronics, you'll be just fine. Good luck!

MS Office

Control the Rotation

Do you use a lot of pictures or drawings in your MS Office programs?

Do you frequently rotate the objects?

If so, does it seem like you spend a lot of time just "nudging" the rotation?

Looking for a way to control the rotation so that you don't have each and every one of the 360 degrees to contend with?

How about a simple one key solution that brings the rotation down to 15 degree jumps? (That would certainly make it easy to rotate to a 45 degree angle with no guesswork involved, wouldn't it?!)

Well, the next time you go to grab the little green circle to begin rotating an object, simply hold down the Shift key.

Yep, that's all there is to it. The Shift key is the difference between a completely free rotation and one that stops every 15 degrees.

It's just a small amount of control, but you'll be surprised by the huge difference it can make!

Windows Will Be Cookin' Up To 300% Faster!

Customize, Tweak, Secure, Optimize, And Make 'Er FLY!!

WOW!!! BEST PRICE EVER!!! Just $11.97!

It's Crazy To Pass This One Up!!!

It's Time To Get That "New Computer" Feeling Back!

Oh WOW!! We just got an amazing price break on System Mechanic 7 in and it's by far, the very best program I've ever seen for getting the most out of Windows! This thing is just gonna blow you away! It did me - and I've seen a LOT of software! This thing is nothing short of amazing! Read on - and get ready to be really - and I mean REALLY - impressed!

First, I'm seriously blown away at how easy this software makes it to really get your computer crankin'! I mean, I don't think there's anything on your computer this can't tweak and optimize!

To test, I installed it on my personal machine and it did a quick scan, and it came up with a warning about a few security problems and gave me some really helpful speed improvement suggestions. With just a couple mouse clicks, I'm now enjoying a MUCH faster -and more secure - computer! And I thought I was as tweaked out as I could be! Not even close - this was incredible - and automatic!

What can it do for you? Let's talk speed - this can make your computer act like it did when you first brought it home - just flying through programs and impressing the livin' daylights out of ya! Heck, your computer might even be faster than when you first got it home!! This has a whopping 19 different ways to crank up the speed on your machine! In fact, many systems see an absolutely incredible 300% improvement after just some automatic adjusting by this program! WOW!!

Want more? - Sure ya do! Another thing this does that I'm in absolute love with is it lets you customize over 100 "secret" Windows settings! Stuff that you always wish Windows would let you adjust but there isn't really any direct way to do it. This makes it point-and-click easy!!

Oh, and just wait till you point your mouse at the Automatic System Maintenance section! I just love this! This part of the program will watch in the background and wait till the system is idle. As soon as you're not using the computer, it will work in the background tuning your computer for absolute peak performance! Here's the really cool part - just touch your mouse, and it stops what it's doing and gives the system back to you! Really! If you've ever been slowed down by a stubborn anti-virus that insisted on scanning while you were working, you know just how cool this is! Oh, and it even lets you pick and choose what optimizations to run!

Another automatic feature I think is just brilliant is the "One-Click" option! It's just what it sounds like - just click the button and System Mechanic runs all of its system enhancement programs and cranks your system up to the next level! Just a button push away! It makes it easy for EVERYONE to have a smokin' system!

Of course, no utility suite would be complete without some killer security tools - and this has the best! This program will quickly scan your system and help you find all the holes - then just plug them with a mouse click! I was really surprised when it found not one, not two, but THREE major holes on my personal PC! I clicked the mouse and the world was safe again!

Oh, and that's not all! This also includes both a world-class Anti-Virus (one of the easiest, most comprehensive AVs I've ever used) and a really top-notch Firewall! Either one retails for more than we're selling the entire suite for! WOW!

PLUS - it destroys spyware, adware, malware and more. OK, put it this way - if it was made to attack your system, this is going to seek it out and destroy it like a battalion of ticked off Marines!

One more thing and I'll try to stop! System Mechanic is just fanatical about grabbing up wasted space on your hard drive! This just blew me away when it found a whopping 1.5 GIG of wasted hard drive space! Geeze - I've had whole hard drives that were smaller than that! This made grabbing that space back a mouse click away! I tell ya - you just can't go wrong here!

Plus there's still sooo much more than I have space for! I'm currently running this software and couldn't be happier with it. My system is definitely faster than before it was installed and I just love the performance increase! If you only buy one software program this year - GRAB THIS!

Your price for all this performance laden software? Get this - just $15.97 and US shipping is FREE! AND - this is a 3 license pack too! WOW!!! Check it out:

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4052

PS - Seriously, after just using this for a short time, I wouldn't be without it. If WorldStart wasn't carrying it, I'd happily pay the $70 for it somewhere else - it really is that good! PLEASE - take a look at this one, I've NEVER seen a better, more complete utility program! Blows everything else right out of the water!!

This price will increase to $15.97 on Monday!

Tip of the Day

A Few More Windows 7 Features

Did you know that Windows Vista's most popular features are being completely overhauled to be more customizable in Windows 7? Well, let's see what we can expect! These four settings will be available:

1.) "Never notify (least secure)." The user is not notified when a program tries to install software or make changes to the computer. The user is not notified when they make changes to Windows settings or when programs try to do so on their own.

2.) "Only notify me when programs try to make changes to my computer." The user is not notified when a program tries to install software or make changes to the computer. The user is not notified when they make changes to Windows settings. However, the user is notified when programs try to make changes to the computer, including Windows settings.

3.) "Always notify me." The user is notified when a program tries to install software or make changes to the computer. The user is also notified when they make changes to Windows settings or when programs try to do so on their own.

4.) "Always notify me and wait for my response (most secure)." The user is notified when a program tries to install software or make changes to the computer. The user is also notified when they make changes to Windows settings or when programs try to do so on their own.

Microsoft Paint in Windows 7

Windows 7 will also include a dramatically improved version of Microsoft Paint. It's said to be the biggest upgrade to the program since the first version of Windows was released.

The ribbon user interface, which came along with Office 2007, is also being implemented into WordPad and Paint. The Paint program will now allow you to directly paint using your fingers, as mentioned above. Apart from that, it will include a ruler as well. Have fun checking out these new features, coming your way very soon!

Wordia

Welcome to Wordia, a dictionary Web site like no other dictionary site you’ve ever seen! Here you'll find words defined as they are in a dictionary, but with a twist. There are video definitions recorded by everyday people who not only define the word, but tell you what it means to them!

Since the site is still in the beta stage, not every word has been defined. So, if you search for a word and there's no definition for it, you might want to think about defining it and submitting your own video definition.

My favorite part of the Web site is the "word a day" calendar you can receive via an RSS feed. Or, you can check it out on the main page of the site as well. I find myself looking forward to a new word everyday!

I also recommend you check out my favorite definition so far and look up the word "because." Not only does the gentleman define the word, but he does it in a humorous way and I just can’t get it out of my head.

If you’d like to submit a video or rate one, you’ll need to register. Just click on the Sign Up button on the left hand side of the page. Fill out the form and then click on the Sign Up button again. Have fun!

Terms of Use

Personal & Educational Use Only This blog consists mainly of FREE newsletters from computer web gurus that I receive. I thought you might like to see them all in one place than try to discover them on your own. A moderate amount of editing may be done to eliminate unrelated repetitious ads or unnecessary text which bloat the post. However I have given the authors full credit and will not remove their site links because you deserve to see where it comes from and they deserve to get credit for what they have written. Your use of this site is simply for educational purposes. For more computer-related help go to: CPEDLEY.COM for free software, advice and tips on low cost products which are very helpful. If you want to contact the editor, please go CPEDLEY.COM and check the Contact page for email address.
