Computer Tips [ Ping My What? + CD Problems Solved + Video Chats + Online Game Troubles ] 11/20/08

Quick Tips

Ping Pong

Do you have any idea what the term "ping" means in the world of computers? If not, allow me to give you a brief definition. Basically, ping is short for Packet InterNet Groper and it is a utility that is most widely used to check for network errors. It's the main utility that is used to verify whether or not a network data packet can be sent to an address (usually an IP address) without any errors.

Now, let me try to explain how a ping process works. First, a ping command is used to ping an IP address and that request is then sent over the network to the computer with that address. Once it's successfully received, the computer produces what is called a "pong" response. The time between the two is then calculated to come up with an average response time. If the ping, for some reason, does not make it through to its destination, the computer will then receive a timed out error.

So, if you've ever received an error like that, you now know that it's coming from the ping utility. The term ping is also used quite a bit in computer gaming. In this case, it goes by either a high ping or a low ping and it basically has to do with how fast of a connection a user has to the game server. For example, if you play games online, you'll want to have a lower ping rate (around 50 is good). If you have too high of a ping speed, you may not be able to play, because a lot of game servers only accept low pings. Well, hopefully that helps you all in understanding this computer term a little more. As you can see, it's all in the ping and the pong!

I have tested and used tons of print publishing programs- and this one is by far the most extensive, easy-to-use, fun, print program EVER! But I am not the only one who agrees- Jill, a teacher from Buffalo, NY claims that she is extremely happy with Printshop. "It has made creating greeting cards and editing photos quick and easy for me."

This program is definitely the most complete and easy way to create the most impressive print projects ever! On the 4 CD set you will find over 20,000 professionally designed templates! On these templates you will find stylish, fun, creative, and professional designs that cover all of your needs. Create greeting cards, postcards, calendars, newsletters, mailing labels, menus, business cards, stationary, banners, invitations, even coupons and receipts, and sooo much more!

For purposes of tellin' ya about this awesome project, I concentrated on a postcard. First, I chose the postcard topic. Here they gave me thousands of options- we're talking postcards for business events, cocktail parties, graduation announcements, every imaginable holiday, weddings, baby showers- you name it you will find a post card advertising it!

For the holiday spirit, I decided to create a Thanksgiving Day Postcard to send to Steve and the WorldStart staff! With the guided template, I was able to finalize my postcard in a matter of minutes- and it was sooo easy to do and I must say- the finalized version is nothin' short of jaw dropping. Check out the front and back screenshots!

The front was already pre-designed, and I loved the image sooo much, that I just left it alone. On the back, all I had to do was insert the message, address, and return address. Here I decided to get a little bit more creative, and I put the return address vertically placed in the middle of the card! Plus, I got to choose from over 700 fonts to create the extra cool touch!

Luckily, I knew what I wanted to say on the back of my card. But say you don't know the right words or you are having writer's block, what do you do? Printshop 22 Deluxe has you covered with the new Sentiment Gallery. Here you will find nearly 3,000 phrases that give you the right words for every occasion! How awesome is that? WOW!

Now relying on the templates is all fine and well, but what if you wanted to create your own personalized project? In this 4 Disk collection, you will find a HUGE amount of images- we're talking over 350,000 images including Getty images and other fine art, backgrounds, photos, seasonal graphics and sooo much more! One this is for sure- these aren't your run-of-the-mill clip art images stored on your computer! These are some high quality stuff! Cool huh?

One of the awesome new features to Printshop 22 Deluxe that I found just too cool is the Family Tree page maker. With these awesome templates you can map out your family three and put faces to all of those important names. There are really sooo many backgrounds and themes to choose from- but don't forget that you can always make your own too! I found this template which honors war heroes and thought it was really cool- check it out:

For those of you who want to create that extra personalized touch with your own photos, this program has an absolutely amazing photo editing program built right in! It is sooo much more user friendly than Adobe Photoshop- and the results are even better! Check out this photo that I edited in a matter of moments! Okay so, here is the original:

Nothing too fancy there- just some pretty yellow flowers. Now check out what it looks like after I click the mouse a few times and self crop the image and adjust the colors, brightness, and focus!

Does that even look like the original picture? WOW!!! Now that was pretty fun! Better yet, it was easy to do!!!! Photo editing just got taken to a whole new easier level- and you are just going to love it!

But the photo editor can really do even more! You can add awesome effects, you can clone your images, you can remove flaws (i.e. red eye) you can resize your image, you can mirror flip your image, and really sooo much more! Better yet, you don't have to open up multiple programs to edit you photos- everything can easily be done in one program, all will a few quick clicks of the mouse!

Now I must admit, I originally thought I would be able to keep this brief, and honestly, I have barely skimmed the surface of everything this program can do! Plus, there are sooo many awesome feature to share that you would be sitting here all day reading what I have to say! Why just read about this amazing program when you can experience this software yourself (at no risk with our 60 day money back guarantee)? It will take you above and beyond anything you could have imaged with any other print program! This is a must have product for everyone!

Computers 101

Q:
I like to play some games online, but lately, they have been running so sluggish and slow. What could be causing this? Please help. I love my games!

A:
This question goes perfectly with today's quick tip up above, so I'm very glad you asked! Now, in case you didn't know, you can play games online as long as you have an Internet connection. You can access games on several Web sites, including Yahoo! and Pogo. So, if you're ever playing along and your game starts to run slower than usual, there are a few things you can check out to determine what's wrong. Let's get started, shall we?

First of all, online games work with your Internet connection and the game's server by a ping meter reading. Ping stands for Packet InterNet Groper (I know I already told you most of this, but bear with me), which is a utility used to determine whether or not certain network data is capable of running without errors. It's basically used to check for network errors within your system. In regards to online games, the ping is the measurement of the connection between the game server and your computer. It determines how fast or slow it is. The lower the number, the better connection you have and the faster you will be able to play your game.

Okay, now on to the stuff you really want to know: what's causing your games to run slow? One factor could be your connection speed. This is a pretty common problem with online gaming. If you use a modem (especially dial-up) for your Internet connection, you are going to have a much higher ping rate than other players who may have something different. For example, if you use broadband Internet, you'll probably have a lower ping number.

Either way, if you're experiencing sluggishness, you can always test your Internet connection to see what's going on. This is usually done by downloading something onto your computer to see how long it takes. Read more about speed testing your connection here. The test will help you in figuring out if the slow connection is because of your Internet connection or the game server connection itself.

On that note, the other big factor in this is your actual server. Depending on where the server is located, how many people are playing games on the same server at the same time as you, what type of connection your computer has, etc., you can experience some slow game times. Thankfully, there are a few things you can do to resolve this issue.

First, if you can, check with the other users you are playing with and see if they're experiencing high pings as well. If they are, it's possible that the server is running on a slow connection or that there are just too many players using it at one time. If this is the case, try an alternate server (go into a different game room, etc). Servers are located all over the world and if you're connected to one in another country, it's going to make some games run much slower. The other thing you can do is just leave the game for awhile and come back to it later. You may be trying to access it during a busy time of day and if you come back at a later time, you might have more luck. You just need to find a time to access the game's server when it's not being bogged down by such a heavy work load.

One last thing you can do to speed up your game connection is check on updates for the particular games you like to play. Make sure you're using the latest version of the game, along with updating the hardware drivers, etc. You should also run updates on your operating system just to make sure everything is running on the freshest material available. This can improve your gaming experience on and offline.

Once done, you can hopefully enjoy your games in the best capacity possible. Happy gaming!

MS Office

Small Screen + Outlook 2007 = No Problem!

Do you work with a fairly small computer monitor?

I know there are some frustrating moments for me at work, because my monitor there is significantly smaller than the one I have at home. You know, once you work on a larger monitor, it's hard to adjust backwards.

But luckily, when it comes to MS Outlook 2007, there are a few ways to see more and have everything displayed at the same time!

My preferences in Outlook 2007 include having the Navigation Pane and the To-Do Bar available for easy use. And let's face it, that's a big chunk of visual space taken on both the left and right sides of the screen.

However, I stumbled across a way to keep them handy while saving space as well. That's right, something like this:

Interested?

Yep, I thought you might be, so here's the trick!

On each of the bars, you'll find chevrons that will minimize the bar or pane.

Clicking on the chevron will reduce the information to a small strip on the side of the program window.

Now, I bet more than a few of you are wondering how that helps, since so little of the bar or pane's elements are shown. Don't worry, that's easily addressed as well!

See at the top where the title of the pane or bar is located?

Click on the title.

That will expand temporarily, giving you access to whatever elements would normally be displayed, but are now minimized.

When you're done with the expansion, it will fold back into the minimized pane or bar, once again leaving you with a clear view of the items that matter the most!

They Do Exist!!!

The Perfect Headphones!

WOW!!! Amazing Sound, Phenomenal Comfort!

Just $10.97!!!

These headphones have been the best selling headphones we have ever offered! They are absolutely amazing! Everyone loves them! If you haven't ordered your set- get to the site and order yours! You're gonna wonder what you did without them! Order now!

Magnificent! Perfect! Comfortable! Crystal Clear! Amazing! Fabulous! These are just a few of the words that I could use to describe these amazing Sentry Headphones.Wait until these headphones wrap around your ears, then you will know what I am talking about! These headphones are simply the best headphones that I have EVER come across!!! I will never wear another earbud or headset again!

Personally, I hate earbuds! In fact, they convinced me that I have odd shaped ears. Those things are simply not comfortable and they are always falling out of my ears. You should see me on my morning jog, I am constantly plugging an earbud (normally the right ear) back into my ear, just to have it fall out again within a few steps! Then, by the end of my jog, both of my ears are sore after those things have been sticking in them for about 30 mins!

Because I hate the earbuds so much, I have been searching for a headset that is lightweight, comfortable, and will stay on my ears while I run! Well, let me tell you, I have searched for years! Then, just the other day, when I thought I had given up and that I would have to settle for those stupid earbuds the rest of my life, I came across these headphones. I said it once, and I will say it again, these headphones are wonderful!

First, they are really lightweight. Like earbuds, these headphones don't have that annoying, heavy, strap that wrap around your head to make them stay in place. However, like headphones, this pair has padded earpieces that comfortably rest on the outside of your ears.

So, you are probably wondering how they stay in place? Well, these headphones have nifty little hooks that hook onto the back of your ears as if you were wearing glasses. These little rubber hooks secure the headphones in place and are extremely comfortable. Today, I wore them all day at work, and forgot that I had them on!!! I was shocked!!!

And the quality of the sound could not be better! You will not miss a single beat with these headphones! Even better, the head phone jack works with my computer, my iPod, and my AM/FM radio! These headphones could not get any better!

Oh- wait! Yes they can... with the price! For just $10.97 and US Shipping is Free. Let me tell ya, I have searched so long for the perfect headphones that I would pay triple that amount. When I saw the price I picked up two sets just for myself- just incase anything horrendous happens and I need a new set. Check out this site for more information!!!

Tip of the Day

Vista AutoRun

Another reader asks: I just upgraded to Windows Vista and I'm having trouble figuring out how the CD AutoRun feature works. Can you please help me with this?

Why, I sure can! One of my co-workers here who uses a Vista computer was actually having trouble with that the other day as well. And after I received this question in my e-mail, I figured it must be a common problem among new Vista users. Well, after today, you won't be confused any longer, because I'm here to shed some light on the Vista AutoRun/AutoPlay feature for you.

To begin, I want to make sure everyone knows what AutoRun means. This term comes into play whenever you insert a CD into the CD ROM drive on your computer (or a DVD into a DVD ROM drive, etc). The AutoRun feature gives you, the user, the ability to take action as to what you want that CD to do once it's in your computer. There are different options you can choose from when it comes to setting up the AutoRun how you want it as well. And that's exactly what I'm going to explain for all you Vista users right now. Ready, get set, go!

When you insert a CD into your Vista computer, an AutoPlay dialogue box will pop right up. From that window, you can choose from these options: "Run start.exe," "Open folder to view files" or "Set AutoPlay defaults in Control Panel." If you put in a music CD, you will have the option of just playing it or ripping it too. The choices will be a little different, depending on the type of CD you put in. Whether it's an audio CD, a piece of software, a game, etc., the options will be different, but everything else is pretty similar, no matter what.

So, you can choose what you want to do, but I would recommend clicking on the link that says "Set AutoPlay defaults in Control Panel." This one is going to give you the most control over what your computer does when you're using CDs. Once that box comes up, you'll see a long list of different disk types. There's everything from audio CDs to enhanced audio CDs to DVD movies to enhanced DVD movies to software and games to pictures to video files to audio files and so on and so on.

For each disk type, there is a drop down menu next to it. When you click on the down arrow for each menu, you will see an array of options. Below are two examples of this.

1.) Audio CD: Your main options for this are Play, Rip, Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer, Take no action or Ask me every time. Now, if you like your music CDs to start right up whenever you put one in your CD ROM drive, choose Play. This option will then detect what media program you have installed on your computer (Windows Media Player, for example) and the CD will automatically play in that program every time you put one in.

On the other hand, if you would like to choose which action to take each time, choose Ask me every time. This way, you'll have the choice every time you go to play a CD on your computer. The choice is yours, but do try to pick the option that will make things the easiest for you.

2.) Software and games: For this one, your main options are Install or run program, Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer, Take no action or Ask me every time. If you choose the first option, every time you go to install a new piece of software on your computer, it will automatically run the install for you. If you'd like to make a new decision every time, choose Ask me every time. Again, the choice is always yours.

Once you've gone through the whole list of disk types and made your selections, click the Save button at the bottom of the window. That will save all of your settings and they will be ready for the next time you play a music CD, install a new program, play a new game, etc. Now, if you want to change your settings at any time, you can also access the AutoPlay window by going to Start, Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, AutoPlay.

It's as easy as that. Isn't it nice to have all the options of the Vista world right at your fingertips?!

Crèchemaina

This Web site is devoted to crèches! A crèche is a highly detailed paper nativity, crib or manger and I have to tell you, I was amazed to learn all about these crèches and see the amazing art that goes into them, along with all the detail.

You can either scroll down the main page to navigate to different sections of the site or you can use the side menu. For the purposes of this article, I’m going to use the side menu to navigate. The sections are:

Crèches – This section is what I consider the heart and soul of the site. Here you will find many different types of crèche sections. They are: Fold-Out Crèches, Pop-Up Crèches, Punch-Out Crèches, Cut-Out Crèches, Crèches to Print, Crèche Models, Designing a Crèche and Displaying Your Collection.

Crèches to Print is a section of Crèches where you will find downloadable designs you can print out to make at your leisure. Designing a Crèche discusses the different ways you can go about designing your own crèche. Displaying your Collection gives you ideas on how to display your collection all year round, rather than carefully folding it and putting it away.

The other sections under this heading are filled with beautiful crèches for you to look at. As you go through them, you’ll notice that some are linked for download so that you can make them yourself.

Crèche Guild – Here you will find out the story behind how the Crèche Guild came to be and how you can join the community’s online discussion.

Books – Here you will find some books on both Crèches and Toy Theaters. They make a good list to take to the library if you want to learn more on the subject.

Christmas Cards – Here you will find two galleries: one for fold-out cards and one for postcards. There are some beautiful cards here, so it is definitely worth checking out.

History – Here you will find the history behind crèches. There is even a visual history! This is a very interesting read and I was very surprised at the rich history involved.

You’ll also find sections on Toy Theaters, Translations and About the Site. I think the passion involved in making these crèches is amazing and they are simply beautiful to look at. Enjoy!

Thanks for understanding that we need to prevent the nasties.

Terms of Use

Personal & Educational Use Only This blog consists mainly of FREE newsletters from computer web gurus that I receive. I thought you might like to see them all in one place than try to discover them on your own. A moderate amount of editing may be done to eliminate unrelated repetitious ads or unnecessary text which bloat the post. However I have given the authors full credit and will not remove their site links because you deserve to see where it comes from and they deserve to get credit for what they have written. Your use of this site is simply for educational purposes. For more computer-related help go to: CPEDLEY.COM for free software, advice and tips on low cost products which are very helpful. If you want to contact the editor, please go CPEDLEY.COM and check the Contact page for email address.
