Quick Tips

Saving the Newsletter

Back by popular demand! If you're an avid WorldStart newsletter reader (which I'm pretty sure most of you are), have you ever wanted to save it? Perhaps we covered some topics you really wanted to keep on file for later use. That's all well and good, but what about all those advertisements we include on the sides of the newsletters? What if you don't want to save those? Well, let's see what we can do!

Now, I can't tell you we'll get rid of those ads, because we need to have those there, but I can tell you how you can save the newsletter without saving the ads! All you have to do is a simple copy and paste. Go ahead and copy the material you want, but make sure not to include the side ads. To do that, drag your mouse along the text you want to save to highlight it, right click and choose Copy. Next, open a new document in either Notepad, Wordpad or MS Word and place your cursor right at the very beginning. Right click again and select Paste.

Ta da! The whole newsletter is there right in front of your eyes, without the ads! You can then save the file or you can print it out. That way, you will have all the text you want and no other hype. Sounds good, huh?! To get to Notepad and Wordpad, go to Start, All Programs, Accessories and choose the one you want. To open Word, find it in your programs list under the Start menu. I hope this little tidbit of information helps you out the next time you go to save one of our newsletters!

November Wallpaper!

Here's this month's wallpaper! As always, it's 100% free, so head on over and grab one!

Smoky Mountain Color

Here's one from my wife! She shot this when we were in the Smokies last week. We liked the photo so much, we decided to turn it into wallpaper for ya!

Smoky Mountain Stream

I shot this after a rain storm the night before. Lots of water, lots of great color in the trees, and a little climbing down slippery boulders to grab this one!

Smoky Mountain Snowy Pine

Are you seeing a theme yet? :-) This was shot earlier this year. I loved how the snow and ice was clinging to this pine tree branch.

All can be found here:

"Oh No! My Hard Drive Just Died!!!!!"

"Thank Goodness For Gaurdian Backup!"

Amazing New Backup Software Makes It Easy!

Set It And Forget It!

Never Again Lose Photos, Images, Documents!

Dirt Cheap Too!

OK, STOP RIGHT THERE -

What would happen if, right now, your computer completely crashed and ALL the data on it was lost?

Think about that for a minute - how many photos would be gone? How many important documents? Songs? Presentations? E-mails? Bookmarks? Projects? Do you have a backup of that stuff you could restore, or is everything gone forever? Kinda puts a knot in your stomach just thinking about it huh?

In fact, I've seen firsthand how terrible it is for people. Not just subscribers begging us (some in tears over the phone) to help them find a way to get unrecoverable lost data back, but I've had family and friends lose thousands of irreplaceable photos, work documents, reports, ect. It's just such a disaster when a hard drive goes out, or a virus destroys all your data, or even an accidental deletion wipes out important files.

If you use a computer, you absolutely MUST backup your data! Everyone knows that! Well, I'm really excited to tell you about this fantastic new title we just came across- it's called Guardian Data Backup and it is, without a doubt, the best backup software I've ever used (and I've used some pretty nice stuff)!

First off, I know what you're thinking - doing backups is a pain! Frankly, that's why we get soooo many people asking us if there's anyway to get lost data back! Wouldn't it be just fantastic if there was an easy-to-use program that you can set to do your backup jobs then just forget it? Well, that's what we have for you today! It has a help file with it, but I doubt anyone has had to even look at it - you can master this baby in about a minute!

This amazing software FINALLY takes all the hassle out of doing backups! It's really this simple - First, create a backup job by picking out the folder or files you want to backup, then just tell the software where you want to backup to. Easy! Next, just hit the backup button whenever you want to backup those files / folders! Or, better yet, schedule your backup job for whenever you like - and it's done automatically at that time, every time! Just set it and forget it! If there's ever a crash, you'll automatically have a current backup!

Guardian Data Backup

Oh, and then it gets even better! You can actually create more than one backup job! In fact, you can create as many as you like. Why would you do that? Well, I don't know about you, but I don't change all my files all the time. My picture files are good if I backup once a week, but with the documents I use for work, well, those change constantly and I want them backed up every day. With multiple backup jobs, I can customize my routine to work the way I do! (Of course, you can do a manual backup anytime you like)

Speaking of scheduling, this is just incredible! You can do backups daily, weekly, or monthly AND select whatever time you like! I have my backups set to run when I'm usually at lunch or dinner, so it all gets done while I'm away!

Guardian Data Backup

Oh, and here's something I absolutely LOVE - filters! This lets you create a "filtered" backup job - and it's the first backup program I've seen that does it! You can actually pick a folder and tell it to ONLY backup the types of files YOU want it to backup! Let's say you have a folder with ten different types of files, but you only want word docs and jpegs backed up - this can do it! OR let's say you have a folder and you want EVERYTHING backed up EXCEPT text docs - yup, this can do that too! It's all optional, but it's there if you need it.

Guardian Data Backup

Finally, as if all the above wasn't enough, this also compresses your backup files to save space - and it even lets you set how high the compression is! All of this is right at your fingertips and really easy to do!

You know, everyone will tell you the "critical" software you have to have on your PC - Anti-virus, Anti-spyware, and a good firewall. Funny thing is they miss the most important one of all - backup software! To me, regular backups are as important - if not even more important, as running anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc! After all - a hard drive crash can happen at any time, just out of the blue - the ONLY defense is a reliable backup!

Your cost? Get this, these are normally $30, but we got a deal for ya! Just $9.97 and US shipping is FREE! Now, I KNOW your data is worth $9.97! RUN to the site and grab yourself a copy of this fantastic software - you'll thank me for it!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4499

PS - EVERYONE is going to experience a hard drive crash or some type of data loss if they are using computers - that's just the way it is. I've lived through several major crashes - hard drives just really do go out sometimes. I can't tell you the level of disaster it would have been if I didn't have a backup! Don't WISH you had this software when it happens - for less than $10, grab this today

Our Best Language Software EVER!

Don't Pay Over $50.00 Per Language For Rosetta Stone!

We Have The New Passport To 35 Languages-

Your Fast Pass To Language Learning!

Special Introductory Price of $15.97!

Wow!!! This Program Is Phenomenal!

With today's focus shifting to a more global market, and more people traveling to other countries whether for business or vacation, we need to know more than one language. Break the language barrier with this amazing new language software that we just came across! It is called Passport to 35 Languages, and it will blow you away!

Wait until you open this three CD set! You're going to be amazed! When I was in college, I spent thousands of dollars on language classes and expensive language software (like Rosetta Stone)! Man, I wish I would have know about Passport to 35 Languages! This program is sooo much easier to use, and the learning activities are actually soooo fun that I don't feel like I am learning at all! And when it comes to a new language, this program has 35 of them all available on three CD's! Now that is a bargain, and what could be more convenient than that?

Learning a new language has never been easier- all thanks to this fantastic language software! With this phenomenal program you get to customize you learning experience by choosing what you want to learn and how you want to learn it! I just love this! It allowed me to focus on vocabulary, grammar, and other topics that interested me and practice at my own pace and choose how I wanted to work on these skills.

Personally, I love playing games, so I practiced my vocabulary with tons of really fun games. Before I knew it, hours had flown by! I couldn't believe how much fun I was having learning! But my favorite had to be the electronic flashcards and word association games with allowed me to really master my language (Arabic) in no time!

Plus, I loved the fact that I could go at my own pace without a snooty professor down my back making me take a test! Without that fierce pressure, I could actually enjoy learning a new language!

Another great thing that I just loved about this program was that I could immerse myself in a wide range of interactive activities that actually sped up my learning process. And with the easy to use interface, all of these interactive activities were super easy to find and navigate through! I could even search for lessons by topics! I seriously couldn't get enough of it! Check out this screen shot of one of the meal topics!!

This amazing language software even has native speakers teaching the lessons. In one really cool section of the program, you ca even evaluate your pronunciation with powerful speech-recognition software. Here you can compare your pronunciation with that of the native speaker! These speakers even give you instant feedback on you intonations and pronunciation! With this program, you will be speaking like a pro in no time! How cool is that? Check out this screen shot of me attempting to speak Arabic!

WOW!!! There is sooo much to say about this program! With this program, you can even learn the differences between the Spanish they speak in Spain versus the Spanish they speak in Mexico! Now that is really extensive and useful knowledge!

Learn Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Polish, Hebrew, Spanish, Thai, and soooo many more languages all with this fantastic program!! For the entire list of all the languages, please check out the link!

Cost? Now here is where the deal comes in! Expensive language software costs around $50.00 per language. Why spend that kind of cash when you can get Passport to 35 Languages for just $15.97 and US Shipping is FREE! Now is that a deal or what?

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4700

PS: We only have a hundred of these! And when I tell you that it is the best language software I have ever come across- I really really couldn't stress that enough! Order now! I know these are going to go quickly! Hurry- don't wait! Besides, the price will increase to $20.97 tomorrow!

Special Notice To Our Customers:

We're pleased to announce that we are back to shipping your orders via first class and priority mail (and sometimes UPS for the heavy stuff). About a year and a half a go, we tried a new company that was supposed to be as good as the others. Well, turns out over the last six months or so, we were starting to get some complaints. People would get shipping notices, but it would take a couple weeks for the package to show up at their door. Well, we dropped that company like a bad habit and are back to our old shipping methods. So, bottom line - when you order from us now, you should see your packages faster than ever! As always, THANKS FOR YOUR ORDERS! They keep this newsletter comin' every day (and keep it free). Have a great day!

Computers 101

Q:
Everyone's always talking about servers, but I'm still not quite sure what a server is or what it means to me. Can you please explain? Thanks!

A:
Excellent question! Basically, a server is a service that allows clients (that's you) to be able to use programs within your computer. Servers are run through specialized computers, which are, ironically, also called servers. In other words, a server serves the information needed to a computer that it's connected with so that you can access your programs, files, etc.

Now, there are different types of servers you may have running through your system. One is a print server. That server works with the computer the printer is connected to, so when you go to print something, it's all able to work. Another server is a Web server, which you may have heard more about than others. Those are set in place so that you can visit Web sites everyday. When you type in a URL, that Web site has to send a request to the Web server in order for you to be able to view and browse through it. That's also an example of how fast servers work!

Two more main types of servers are a file server and an e-mail server. The file server is pretty self-explanatory, but it works to store the files you save and then deliver them when you need them. The e-mail server is what allows you to send out e-mail. It sends and receives the e-mails you write and get back everyday.

Servers are very dependable and you can always count on them to get you what you need while you go about your daily computing. You may have several servers running through your system, helping you to get your work done, so you definitely have to be thankful for them. They're lifesavers!

MS Office

Saving "Backwards" and Opening "Upwards"

Okay, I'm sure many of you have run into a situation like this.

You're working with MS Office 2007 and someone you're trying to send a file to is using an older version.

Or, maybe you're the one with the older version and you can't seem to open the files sent to you.

But wait!

I can think of yet another situation! Maybe you have both problems, because you have one version at home and a different one at work, so taking files back and forth is a huge pain. (I experienced that personally and there's nothing more irritating!)

Well, the big question is: what can you do about it?

I can think of two things, depending on the situation you're in.

If you're the one using Office 2007, you can alleviate some of the pain by watching the way you choose to save the file.

When you go to save the file, you can do more than just name it. Just below where you enter in the file name, you'll find a drop down list labeled as "Save as type:."

If you take a look through the list, you'll find choices that allow you to save the file in an older version.

Set the file type that way and you'll eliminate a lot of headaches!

I should warn you though, if you've used features that are unique to Office 2007 (such as SmartArt), you'll be warned about the consequences of saving the file in an older version.

Now, let's talk about those of you still using older versions of Office (2000, XP and 2003).

You can download a Compatibility Pack from Microsoft that allows your older Office programs to open the Office 2007 files.

The official name is the "Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats" and I found it in Microsoft's download center right here.

I downloaded it when I first had a problem between my work and home computers and it has helped a lot.

Obviously, I still had issues with features used in my files that are unique to Office 2007, but for the most part, it made my file transfers from one computer to the other much easier to deal with!

Tip of the Day

Hotspot Shield

I tell you what, I’m tired of always getting this message when I try to watch a video on Web sites like YouTube: “This video is not available in your country.” What a nightmare!

I’m also wary of the fact that most Web sites I use have my IP address on file, which can identify me right down to the city I live in and the ISP I use. Even when you use a wireless network in a public place, you’re not always guaranteed safety. So, what can you do?

Well, a piece of software called Hotspot Shield takes care of it all! Since I've installed Hotspot Shield, I’ve been able to use all of the country restricted Web sites and wireless network security is no longer a problem for me! Here’s how you can get it too:

1.) First of all, click here to go to the main Web site.

2.) Then click on the Download Hotspot Shield button.

3.) Next, just go ahead and install it.

4.) Now, go to Start, All Programs, Hotspot Shield and then select Hotspot Shield Launch.

5.) Hotspot Shield will then open in your browser window. Once it’s set up, it should look something like this:

6.) When you're ready, you can start browsing away! Occasionally, there will be a banner ad at the top of the page, but you can use an ad blocker or simply click on the Close button if it bothers you too much.

7.) When you're ready to stop, simply hit Disconnect. It’s that easy. Enjoy!

Today's Feature

Architectural Photography

Photographing homes and buildings takes a special craft, but it’s something that can be easily acquired. Here are a few simple ways you can make your architectural photos stand out from the crowd!

1.) The structure should tell a story without any artificial lighting, etc. Try to photograph it just the way it is. If the house is a little on the dark side, don’t use too much light to show how bright it is. Similarly, if it’s too bright, don’t shut out the windows and portray something it's not.

2.) Wait for the right time of day. Avoid rainy or cloudy days when there isn’t enough natural light to boost your picture. Sun rays coming from the windows and doors are something you cannot do without in inclement weather. Much of the home’s character is lost without the sun.

3.) Shoot, shoot and shoot some more! Don’t worry about the number of pictures you take. Try to play around with different exposures, shutter speeds and angles. The more you shoot, the more chances you'll have for better quality photos.

4.) Use 12-24mm ultra wide angle lenses for maximum effect. Using wide apertures and long shutter speeds will provide warmth and give your shots some character. Add a touch of flash (1/64th) to combat color shift and to add highlights to the scene. Try to keep your ISO at 400 or 640, because anything faster will be too grainy and anything slower will shift the colors a little too much.

5.) Stand back. Hold the camera to your eye and back up until you have the widest shot you can get. You can then set up your tripod and compose your shot.

6.) Always shoot below eye-level to give the building an imposing persona and an overwhelming presence.

7.) Always keep your sensor clean!

8.) When you do your light measurements, metering the dark part of the scene and exposing it will overexpose the remainder of the scene, but not underexpose it.

9.) Be passionate. Only then will you gain enough experience to define your style of architectural photography.

10.) With RAW images, you can nicely pull back detail from an overexposed image within a stop or two, but in an underexposed image, you cannot increase the exposure without introducing noise. It's better to overexpose with digital than underexpose.

11.) Lastly, while some photographers advocate the expensive Expo Disc for maintaining white balance, there’s a cheaper alternative: a white coffee filter. It does the same thing, but it doesn’t cost nearly as much. Just place it over the lens and take your pictures. Your camera needs to be set on manual and you can then adjust your white balance settings. Have fun and good luck!

Television Tunes

Welcome to Television Tunes, a library full of TV theme music!

You can pretty much navigate the Web site right from the front page, but there's a navigation strip along the top of the page if you’d rather use that.

To navigate from the main page, you can use the drop down box to check out the list of the Newest Songs that have been added recently. Or, you can browse alphabetically with the index just below that.

The really fun part can be found by clicking on the Game tab on the top navigation strip. It’s the Name That Theme Song game and it's so much fun! You can choose between one or two players, select how many rounds you want to play (10, 20 or 30) and then just start. Each round consists of listening to a theme and identifying it. If you don’t guess right the first time, simply try again!

This Web site brings back so many good memories for me and I hope it does the same for you!

A moderate amount of editing may be done to eliminate unrelated repetitious ads or unnecessary text which bloat the post. However I have given the authors full credit and will not remove their site links because you deserve to see where it comes from and they deserve to get credit for what they have written. Your use of this site is simply for educational purposes. For more computer-related help go to: CPEDLEY.COM for free software, advice and tips on low cost products which are very helpful. If you want to contact the editor, please go CPEDLEY.COM and check the Contact page for email address.
