Big Drama on the Technology Front

The Church of Scientology has appeared in the news once again:
Wikipedia has informed the church that they will be banned from posting and editing the online encyclopedia's website after several pro-scientology edits have been made to articles from the church's computers, which is a violation of Wikipedia's terms of service.

The media giant, Time Warner, is legally separating from America Online (AOL), the well known Internet provider, after nine years of an unhappy relationship.
AOL hopes that it's new CEO, Tim Armstrong, who left Google to control the Internet provider, will be able to keep the company afloat without its corporate parent.

Microsoft is building a search engine that it hopes can challenge Google: Bing.com will not just be a search engine, but also a “decision engine”. This new search engine is planned for release this
week.

These Are FANTASTIC!!!

Just Turn On The "HIGH BEAMS!"

Brilliant! Shed Some Light On The Task At Hand!!

If you've ever tried to cut something with a pair of scissors and for whatever reason the lighting was just bad... you know how frustrating that can be!! You probably turned on a desk light or a table lamp thinking that would solve the problem but it probably didn't!  And actually, sometimes that kind of "side-lighting" creates shadows - making the problem worse! And then you finally realize...you don't need "room" lighting...you need light RIGHT ON THE LINE OF WHAT YOU'RE CUTTING!

These LED Light Scissors are made for that situation! And boy...do these work great!!! When you need more light, all you have to do is flip the toggle switch and you've got 2 SUPER bright LED lights leading the way with light right on the line of what you're cutting!! Fabulous!!

And just in case you're wondering, this is not a cheap pair of scissors. These are high quality precision scissors and they cut VERY WELL! ! In fact, the stainless steel blades cut right through paper AND cloth like a red hot knife through melted butter!

PLUS these are very comfortable to use. They have a soft grip "ergonomic" handle that's designed to reduce the strain on your hands! And it does the trick! I remember times I had to do a lot of cutting and after al while my hand would hurt. But with these, I don't know if it's because they're so sharp or the handle has a soft grip or the ergonomic design OR maybe it's a combination of all of the above! Whatever it is, all I know is that these scissors are REALLY comfortable to use! Add to that the 2 Super bright LED lights and this is the perfect pair of scissors!

image

So if you're a seamstress, hobbyist or just plain 'ol need a good pair of scissors once in a while, these are a great buy! And to make it even better, we've got these marked down for today at only $9.97 and US shipping is FREE!!!

Q:
The other day I was on a site that had a pop up window for searches. Anyhow, I did a search, then another, and wanted to go back to the first one. Unfortunately, there was no back button on this pop up, so I had to search my first term again.

Then another time I had a pop up window that I needed to refresh, but no refresh button was to be found (I wanted to see if some info had been updated). So, my question is, is there a way to navigate or work with a browser window that doesn't display your browser buttons?

A:
Yes! Usually, you can right-click inside the window and select Back , Forward , or Refresh from the resulting menu. Oh, be sure you're not clicking a picture when you do this or you're not going to get those options - just a bunch of picture saving type stuff.

image

If you'd rather do the keyboard shortcut thing, that's fun too (besides, you always look cooler when you use keyboard shortcuts). Here are the shortcuts you need:

Alt+Arrow - Use the Alt key with your left and right arrows to go forward / back.

Backspace - Hitting your backspace key will also take a back.

F5 - This one will refresh the page.

Esc - Tapping the escape key is the same as clicking the Stop button. BTW - frantic pounding of the Escape key is my favorite way to stop runaway pop-up windows.

Alt+Home - Yup, this'll send ya back to your homepage which is hopefully set to www.worldstart.com ;-)

One last way, if you have a scroll-wheel type mouse, is to hold down Shift while you move the wheel. This moves you easily through the pages.

And there you have it. That should get you through most, probably all, buttonless browser situations you encounter.

Happy surfin'.

~ Steve

MS Office

PDF or XPS???

So, if you were with me for yesterday's discussion about the ability possessed by MS Office 2007 to save files in PDF format then you probably also noticed that the file format XPS seems to be lumped with the PDF choice.

Most of us are very familiar with PDF since so much that we see online is in that format. Forms such as tax forms from the state and federal governments as well as reference materials such as instruction manuals are just two examples of common PDF file we use regularly.

For the record, according to Microsoft, PDF (Portable Document Format) files are a way of sharing and saving information that preserves document formatting. During online viewing or printing, the information retains the format that you intended. Data in the file cannot be easily changed. The PDF format is also useful for documents that will be reproduced by using commercial printing methods.

The big question for some will be… what's an XPS?

I mean, Office 2007 is giving you the choice so what exactly are we choosing between?

Again, according to Microsoft, XPS (XML Paper Specification) files are a way of sharing and saving information that preserves document formatting. During online viewing or printing, the information retains the format that you intended. Data in the file cannot be easily changed.

Sound familiar?

Yeah - I'm sure that it does… since they're pretty much the same thing.

I've saved files in both formats. I found that my PDF could be opened in both Adobe Acrobat Reader and my web browser, while the XPS would only open in my web browser.

Beyond that - I've got to admit that I'm not sure.

I stick with the PDF because I'm familiar with it and Adobe. I figure that since I can't find much of a difference I might as well stay with what I know.

But for those of you who were wondering about the XPS part, now you know - well, at least as much as I do at this moment.

And Just Wait Till You See The Deal!

Whew! These sold like CRAZY yesterday! THANK YOU to everyone who ordered - what a response! If you missed out, you just gotta take a look at this one! This incredible software turns your photos into absolutely amazing digital slide shows you can show off on any TV with a DVD player, or your computer, or even send via e-mail! You gotta check it out - you'll love it too!

I'm so excited! We have just the coolest software for you today! If you shoot digital photos or even digital video, this is one piece of software you just gotta own! I almost can't stand how cool this is! I had to tear myself away from it just to write this review up!

It's called SlideShow Expressions and it lets you create these absolutely amazing DVDs or Video CDs from either your digital photos or videos (or both)! All you need is this software and a standard CD or DVD burner!! The resulting movies are incredibly professional looking and between all the "ohhs and "ahhs", everyone is going to ask how the heck you did these incredible shows!

I mean, think about it. You've probably taken a lot of photos and maybe even some home videos. Now's your chance to bring 'em back to life and share them with your family and friends! Don't let them just sit and gather digital dust on your hard drive (yeah, we know about you), it's time to really DO something exciting with 'em!

First off, SlideShow Expressions really couldn't be easier to use! You'll be blown away the first time you use it! Amazing how simple they can make these things! Seriously, it gives you all the shortcuts, the wizards, and the help you need by doing all the "hard parts" for you! Just start the wizard, import your photos (soooo easy), and follow the prompts! Ten minutes later, you have this absolutely amazing digital slide show of your images that is going to drop the jaw of anyone who sees it! Really - just wait till you try it! This takes you from beginning to end and shows you how to turn your favorite photos and videos into DVD's or Video CD's that frankly even you won't believe you were able to create yourself!

Sure, it's easy to use, but at the same time it's designed to help you produce stunning, professional quality projects in no time! You're not going to find ANY OTHER program that's this fast and easy...believe me...we've tried!!!

Here, just take a look at just some of the amazing features this has! Once you start the program, the easy-to-use "Wizard" starts up and asks you questions to help give you the features and designs you need to create the final result you want! Start out with taking your favorite photos and editing them to a professional level that will not only amaze you but your family and friends as well!

Slideshow

Oh, and get this. Included with this program is a fantastic mini photo editor that makes it oh-so-simple to "fix" and enhance those photos that didn't seem to come out quite the way you wanted when you took them! And don't worry, there's plenty of examples to show you what to do to really "tweak" 'em to how you want 'em to be!

Slideshow

As if that wasn't enough, you can add picture captions to go with your photos! You can also create on-screen menus and on-screen "chapter buttons". And you can "trim and edit" not only photos but videos as well! Think that sounds cool? Oh, just wait till you see the "Pan and Zoom" effects...this will blow your mind!!! What this does is let you bring your "still" images to life by "panning" across pictures and zooming in and out! And the program lets you choose the "begin" and the "end" views for a photo! For example, the slide can start with the focus exclusively on a small section of a photo and then the view can zoom out and pan in any direction to shift focus to an entirely different area! You've complete control over the focal shift. Here's the section of the program that shows you EXACTLY HOW TO DO IT!

Slideshow

But hang on...we're not done yet! Next you can choose slide transitions! Instead of just slapping them up on the screen, the software does these awesome scrolls, zooms in / out, fades, etc.! It really looks like it was done in a professional studio! In fact, there are tons of different "styles" you can choose from to give the show the exact "look" you're going for! It's sooo cool - you'll have a blast putting your production together!

And of course no "professional" level video presentation would be complete without audio, would it? So, let's add some music or even your own voice! Oh yeah, we're ready for the BIG LEAGUES!!!

So what do you do with your slideshow once it's been created? Tons! OK, first off, what if you want a CD or DVD to show off on your home TV set? Hey - that's my favorite use for this! Just save your show to a DVD or CD - either of which will play on ANY standard DVD player!! That's right - just pop in a standard CD-R or DVD-R and create a movie - no special CDs, DVDs or burners required!

Oh, and the "saving" options don't stop there! Want to publish your slide show directly on the Web? No problem! You can share your creation your photo slide shows with friends and family online at sites like MySpace, YouTube and other social Websites! Want more? You can convert your photo slide show for use on an Apple iPod, Sony PSP players, most MP3 players that support video, even cell phones that are "media enabled"! WOW!!! Talk about customized production! You've got it all!

Oh, and wait till you see this - It also INCLUDES A CD / DVD LABEL MAKER! That's right...no need to buy another program to design and create you DVD labels...it's already included! Don't just hand out a "blank" disc when you can design and print personalized CD and DVD disc labels and cover sheets! Now you can make your DVD presentation complete and give it that professional "polished" look! And with the templates and easy to follow tutorials you'll turn out awesome labels in no time!

This is GREAT way to archive and preserve your photos and home videos. You can organize an entire year's worth of pictures and put them on a CD or DVD! Plus, do it fast and easy. And you can even hand out copies to everyone you know. Great for family events like weddings, graduations, parties, you name it!

Don't Spend $40 or more for different programs that do each separately when the SlideShow Expressions can do it all! And to top it off, you can have all of this today for just, $12.97 and US shipping is free!!!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=5107

P.S. - Your family and friends are gonna love being able to see your photos and videos on their own DVD player in their living room! You're really gonna be thrilled with this!!!

Tip of the Day

Revive Your PC

Are you having computer problems? I mean, serious computer problems. Is your computer refusing to turn on or does it look completely dead? If this happens to be the case, you just need to do some troubleshooting techniques to try and bring it back to life. Follow the steps below to hopefully bring your computer back to "workingland."

1.) The first thing you should check is the power supply just to be sure that there is power available for your computer. Make sure the power switch is turned on and then plug a lamp or some other small item in the wall socket to see if it works. If it does, you know there is power available and that's a good sign. Once you know there is power, you can check to make sure the power cord is properly connected to the wall outlet and the computer power socket.

If you're still having trouble after that, check the cord. Does it look okay or is it damaged? If it is, you'll need to replace it right away.

2.)Note: Before you continue on to the next step, make sure your computer is completely shut down and be sure to disconnect it from the power cord as well. Also, keep in mind that all of your PC's components are sensitive to static electric charges, so it's important to ground yourself by touching the frame of your computer's case before starting any of the troubleshooting processes. This will get your body used to the computer case and eliminate any chance of static shock.

The next thing you can troubleshoot is if all of the cards within your computer are fully pushed in to their slots. Go ahead and open your computer's system unit and push down on all the chips, the video card, the sound card, the modem or LAN cards, the memory cards and the CPU units to make sure everything is seated properly.

3.) Now, check your computer again to see if you've been able to fix the problem. If not, keep troubleshooting! Next, check the power between the power supply you use and the motherboard on the back of your computer. If you need to, pull out and reinsert all of the cards. You can also try placing them in different slots until you find a perfect fit for all of them.

4.) If you still haven't been able to resolve the issue, the next thing you can do is take out all non-essential parts from your computer, leaving only the basic ones in. The basic parts are the motherboard, the power supply, the display card, the controller and the hard drive. You can pull out everything else (mainly the other cards) by removing the screws from your unit, as shown in the screenshot below.

5.) Now, replace each part that you took out one at a time until the problem reoccurs. When you replace a part and the computer stops working, you know that particular part is the reason for your computer problems. If this is the case, that part can just be replaced and your computer should then operate normally.

If you still see some issues, remove all of the remaining cards, including the display card and floppy controller. Then turn on the power just to see if the power supply is still running. If it does run, one of the cards you just removed is faulty. You'll then need to get that one replaced.

These are just some simple techniques you can try to get your computer up and running again. Please use extreme caution when removing certain parts of your computer. If you're not completely sure on how to do it, get some help or take your computer to a repair shop so a professional can look at it. You don't want to risk creating other problems for your computer by doing an incorrect job.

Also, if you have any other questions during the process, seek help from your computer manual or call for some technical support from your computer's manufacturer. Hopefully, in the end, you will be able to pinpoint the problem and revive your computer back to life!

One last thing: Be extremely careful when doing all of this, and if you're unsure of how to proceed, ask a tech or call your local guru! Better safe than without a computer, eh?

Today's Feature

Cyber Czar

It seems that computer security issues are affecting everyone these days. Even government organizations like the FBI and the office of the president have been afflicted with viruses and data theft. President Obama recently admitted that during his campaign, his office's computers were infected and critical campaign information was stolen! This just shows that anyone can be a victim of cyber crime; not just regular folks like you and me.

So, what can be done about this? Until just recently, there was no official government office in charge of data security. Thankfully, this is all about to change. Just a couple days ago, the president announced the creation of a new data security post. The position, called the cyber czar, will soon be active and will hopefully make some positive progress toward securing the country, and in turn, everyone within it from cyber crime.

At this time the exact role of the position has not been completely disclosed, but soon we'll know what the US government will do about Internet security in the United States. Many people, including me, think that this position should have been created long ago. Security issues with data have been a huge issue in private and public roles throughout this country. If this position has any effect at all on Internet security issues, it will be a welcome change to the current technological landscape.

In the big picture, this position will most likely be in charge of securing important government data and not so much for people like you and me. Even if that is the case, securing the private data of US citizens that lies in government hands is something that everyone will benefit from. Just imagine if someone broke into the social security administration's data. This would be a disaster! As things sit now, this could be a very real threat. Hopefully a cyber czar is the right answer.

Until next time, stay safe out there!

~Gary.

Still Tasty

Have you ever found yourself asking whether or not something is still safe to eat? I know I do! Especially when you consider all the different markings on labels: sell by, use by, expires on, etc. Well here at Still Tasty you will find the answers to your questions.

The site is divided into three categories, they are:

Keep it or Toss it – this is a guide to whether or not you should keep a food item or toss it. It is divided into food categories to make it quick and easy for you to find the item you have questions about.

The categories are: fruits, vegetables, eggs & dairy, meat & poultry, fish & shellfish, nuts & legumes, grains & pasta, condiments & oils, herbs & spices, snacks & sweets, baked goods, and last but not least, beverages. As you can see, they really break it down.

If you know exactly what you’re looking for you can also use the search engine provided above the categories. Just type in your item, and click the search button.

Your Questions Answered – here you will find a listing of food safety questions that you may have always wanted the answer to. For example: is it safe to refreeze thawed meat? If you have a question that hasn’t been answered yet, click the link after the question and you’ll be taken to a page that will provide you with the e-mail address to send your questions to.

Shelf Talk - this section is a series of food articles. One I think everyone should read and pass along is: Expiration Dates: Should You Pay Attention? There is a lot of helpful information in it about the different kinds of dates that you find on food products. You’ll also find an article on keeping your fruits tasty, and one on three different way to defrost foods.

This is a great site that helps take the guess work out of whether your food is still good to keep or not. Check it out today!

Do You Love Birds?

Then You're Gonna Want To Have This!

And If You REALLY Love Birds...This Is An Absolute Must-Have!!!

Birds

Don't Pay $29.99 For It! OUCH!

We Have It For Just $5.97 - And FREE US Shipping! WOW!

You know, books are nice, but "Multi-Media" is SO MUCH better! And this software program is FILLED with tons videos, sound clips, drawings, 3D displays and slide shows that bring you "up close and personal" with our fine feathered friends! WOW!!! What a great way to learn about birds!!!

The program is set up as a "virtual" museum with three main rooms along with galleries and corridors filled with everything imaginable related to birds! And just like a regular museum, you can visit different galleries and each one features a different topic related to birds. And the multi-media presentations will definitely impress you AND hold your attention! Actually, that's an understatement...wait til you see the attention to detail information in some of these exhibits!

You can take, "guided" tours that whisk you away through planned tours of related topics. Or just "wander" through on your own and stop to take a closer look at what catches your interest at the moment!

Birds

Some of the features in the galleries include:

Bird Watching
"Songs and Calls"
Bird Tracks
Flight Patterns
Bird Behavior, that covers things courtship, hatching, nesting, and feeding.

Other galleries showcase differences in beaks and talons among birds, their global habitats and migration patterns. Still others explain how history and international cultures have been influenced by birds! And what I thought was really helpful is that within each gallery are links that you can click on to see related topics within the museum!

When you come across some of the "interactive galleries", you'll have some fun! These let you rotate the items that are on display 360 degrees to get a better view...just like you were there in person!

Birds

If you want to find something specific, there's a searchable "Main" index along with an index of videos available to watch. And you'll definitely want to check out the "Anatomy Room" that shows detail drawings of exterior, muscles, organs, skeletons.

Birds

And in this edition there's a "Bonus" section that lets you create screen savers and print stationery for your own use. Want to remember a particular bird call? You can also save sound files to create your own personal collection or even use them in other programs! This is a fantastic program and I know you're gonna love this as much as I do. And if you're involved with a group or organization that has any interest in birds, they'll love to see it!!! (But be warned...if you lend it to them, you may not get it back!!) The only thing that would make this even better is a great price and we've got that for you today too! 'Cause right now this is just $5.97 and US shipping is FREE!!!

Monthly Wallpaper

June Wallpaper

Here's this month's free calendar wallpaper! As always, it's 100% free, so head on over and grab one!

Bald River Falls (Photo contest winner)

This picture was taken on a very cold day in November of 2008. Location - Smoky Mtn Nat. Park

 Golden Canyon

This was taken in Death Valley Nat. Park near the overlook at Zabriski Point. It was early morning and the amazing golden light really turned the already gold-colored hills even more yellow.

Yellow Flower

Here's an extreme closeup of a yellow lily (OK, could be an orchid - I don't really know), taken last spring.

Here's June's wallpaper. It's all free, so enjoy!
