Holodecks are here! (kind of)

This is simply news for the geeks out there, and I just had to be the one to break it to everyone. Awhile back I did an article on “Trek-Tech”, or the technologies from the TV series “Star Trek” that have managed to become reality. I talked about the Bluetooth headset, personal communicators (cell phones) and a couple of other things, but what's really exciting, what I've always wanted, was a holodeck!

It's virtual reality, folks, and the great minds over at Google have the closest thing I've seen yet!
It's called the “Google Street View Holodeck” and what it does is take the on the ground view from Google Maps and puts it in a 360 degree viewing room! That means that you could potentially stand outside of your house...inside your house!

If you've never messed around with Google Maps, I'd say to give it a try. It's a lot of fun searching out locations and zooming in to get a first person perspective. Although I'm sure Google has no consumer-level plans for their holodeck, it's great to know the tech is getting there!

Just a fun aside from the regularly scheduled programming.

The Program Every PC User Has Always Wanted!

Finally - An Easy Way To Move SOFTWARE To Another Computer!!

We're Talking Point & Click!!!

This Will Blow You Away!

WOW! We have just found what I think is about the coolest program EVER! It's called PC Mover and if you're ever, in your lifetime, going to get another computer, you REALLY (And I mean REALLY, REALLY, REALLY) need to grab this title!!! PLUS - You're gonna save over 70% off of retail! WOW!!

What's it do? Glad you asked! This software allows you to move the programs and files from your old PC onto your new PC! Here's a video overview (click the picture below - scroll down when you get to the page - it's a YouTube video with a review of the product):

What's got me so excited about this software is that it can actually move programs from one PC to another. Moving files is easy (just use a CD or flash drive), but moving software is always a problem.

First off, trying to move most programs by yourself is all but impossible. Sure, the main program might be under your Program Files folder, but during setup, it probably installed lots of DLL files under your Windows System directory, registered those same files with Windows, maybe it placed shortcuts, added startup items, dropped in templates - well, you get the idea. When most software is installed, you get components and pieces of the software scattered all over your hard drive. Manually finding every part and putting it back on a new computer, placed where it should be and registered with Windows is almost impossible.

Of course, you could sit in front of your computer for hours on end reinstalling all the software that was on your old PC, but talk about a hassle. Finding all the CDs, locating all the serial numbers, downloading updates and sitting around all day just isn't my idea of fun. Besides, I know for a fact that I personally have several programs on my computer right now where the original install CD has been lost! If you fall into that same category, then this software not only saves you tons of time and frustration, but tons of money as well! We took the software for a spin just to see if it works as advertised. Check this out...

Our Test Results - WOW!!!

April, our MS Office Tips writer, just purchased a new Vista PC. Unfortunately, she had tons of programs on her old XP computer - many of which she simply couldn't find the CDs for or that had been downloaded years ago. She was looking at literally hundreds of dollars in new software to replace those CDs. So, I told her I needed to test this new software and she enthusiastically decided to give it a try.

First off, we were very impressed that the whole process is "wizard" driven. You don't really need to know much more than how to click your mouse in order to make this software work!

The first step was to install the software on both PCs - easy enough. Then you attach them with the included USB link cable (just plug it into each PCs USB port). Again, so far, so good.

At this point, we were ready for some decisions. First you have the option to exclude files - say you don't want it to transfer .Tiff files for some reason. Just tell the software not to transfer those We wanted all the data files, so we left this alone. Then it asks you what folders you want to transfer over. This is mostly for your data files, so we left the checkmarks in for all the folders that had data.

Next, and this was the cool part, the software scans the old computer and finds ALL the software that has been installed. It gives you a list with little check boxes so you can select only the programs you want to transfer to the new machine! Now that's slick! I don't know about you, but I have loads of programs on my PC that I never use but haven't bothered to uninstall, so being able to select only the programs I want to transfer is great! April found she only needed about half of the stuff she had on her old computer transferred, so she unchecked everything else. Oh, and it even tells you when you already have the same software on your new PC (this program will not overwrite existing files, so you don't need to worry about data loss).

After all the selecting is done, you simply leave the computer to do its thing. The software will transfer all your files and programs automatically! Depending on how fast your computers are, and how much data you're moving, this can take some time. So, I recommend doing this before you go to bed. When you wake up in the morning, your new computer will be all set to go with all your old software and files on it! That's what we did with April's, and it was just awesome how well it worked. All the programs that we transferred worked perfectly on the new computer - no problems at all - not one, zilch. This software really does the job!! It's awesome!

I'm planning on a new PC sometime next year, but I've been dreading all the reinstalls that go with it. My current PC is something like 5 years old, so I have a HUGE amount of software and data on it. It would take me weeks to get a new PC to the way I like it. With this software, I'll be able to do it a half hour before I go to bed! I love it!!

Oh, and this is cool too. If you're not planning on a new PC right away, don't worry! The software is upgradable to the newest version whenever you decide to make the switch! So, if you're planning on a new PC anytime in the future, grab this title now and stick it on your shelf!

Oh, and I'm not the only one who thinks this is fantastic. Look at the reviews!

Computers 101

Q:
Help! It seems as if my taskbar has disappeared, Start button and all. How can I get it back?

A:
Well, I bet that you accidentally shrunk it. See, if you hover your mouse over the top edge of your taskbar, the cursor becomes a double-sided arrow which allows you to adjust the height of the taskbar. The cursor looks like this:

So if you've inadvertently reduced it to none, simply hover the mouse's cursor at the very bottom edge of your screen (or where ever your taskbar was previously) and wait for the cursor to become a double-sided arrow. Then just click and drag the taskbar back to original size. This shouldn't affect Windows Vista users, but if it does, this same method works.

Hope this solves your problem!

MS Office

Multiple Pictures to a Presentation Instantly

Do you tend to create PowerPoint presentations that contain a lot of pictures?

Tired of constantly creating new slides then going through the whole insert process for each pictures?

Yeah - if you've got a lot of them then it can definitely be a lot of repetitive work.

May I suggest a different approach - one that creates slides and inserts all the pictures in one step?

I thought you might like that idea so let's get started.

Well actually, before we get started with the process of presentation creation let me give you some advice. It's easiest if you have your pictures in a single location. This can be done with them all over the place but it's fastest if you've got them all together.

Anyway… back to "getting started".

What we're going to create is a presentation using PowerPoint's Photo Album feature.

  • If you're using an older version of PowerPoint then you need the Insert menu, Picture submenu, New Photo Album choice.
  • PowerPoint 2007 users need the Insert tab of the Ribbon, Photo Album button.

Everyone should be looking at a Photo Album dialog box that's something along the lines of this:

Here's where you do a lot of the decision making for all the slides that you're about to create. (Not that you can't change your mind about things later but if we can set it once and let the program do its magic then why not?)

First thing is to click the File/Disk button.

This will let you browse for your photos. If they're all in one location then you can select all of them in this one step using the Shift and Ctrl keys as you choose your pictures.

If your photos are in several different locations then simply click the File/Disk button again and go find more.

Once you have your pictures in the list you can use the up and down arrow buttons below the list to re-order them now or, as with any presentation, you can choose to move the slides around later.

Does it make a difference when you put them in order?

Good question - if you're putting one picture on each slide then no. However, if you're going to put multiple pictures on a single slide then yes; you'll want them on the correct pages together. (The setting for pictures per page is at the bottom under the label of Picture Layout. You should note that you can also choose a layout that includes a title on each page.)

Below that you can choose a frame shape for the pictures as well as apply a theme to the presentation.

Keep an eye on the small preview at the right - this will show you how the Album Layout choices your making affect the general layout of the slides that will be created.

Back at the top of the dialog box, to the right of the file list I'm sure you've noticed the preview of the selected picture. Below the preview you'll even find some photo editing tools, should you need them.

Now that we've covered the basics of pictures let's take a quick look at the few things located below the File/Disk button.

First there's the New Text Box button:

This button adds a space to the presentation the size of one photo. So, if you have one photo per slide then an entire slide is added below the picture you had selected when you clicked the button. If you have two pictures per slide then it adds a space for text as ½ of a page… you get the idea.

Below that there are a couple of options:

"Captions below ALL pictures" does exactly that - it puts a text box below each picture. Mine initially had the file name in it - but obviously you can edit them.

And I'm positive that you find "ALL pictures black and white" very self explanatory.

When everything is set click Create.

Poof! PowerPoint presentation done - all pictures inserted and now all you have to worry about is putting in content.

Oh yeah - one more thing…

What if you change your mind about some of the album settings? Start over? Never!

  • For people with older versions of PowerPoint go to the Format menu, Photo Album choice.
  • PowerPoint 2007 people should use the Insert tab, click the bottom half of the Photo Album button and choose Edit Photo Album.

Make your changes and click Update.

Whew! That was a lot today - but it has a lot of potential for all kinds of presentations and, as the name suggests, actually creating photo albums. Take a few minutes to investigate - it's worth your time.

Absolutely AMAZING Anatomy & Medical Software

Incredible, Jaw-Droppin' High-Res Maps Of The Entire Human Body!

Fantastic Medical Dictionary and Encyclopedia!

You've Just Got To See This!

human body

The BEST Selling Human Anatomy Software in the USA!!!

Human Body 360 - DVD Professional Edition!

Human Body

We've been waiting and waiting for this and it finally came in!! I heard this was a phenomenal program so I've been dying to see what all the hoopla was about! Now that I've seen it, all I can say is, WOW!! JUUUST AWESOME!!! This is the most fully updated and complete consumer anatomy software available anywhere!!! And when you load this into your computer you'll know why!

The program is called Human Body 360 - DVD Professional Edition, and it's actually THREE Programs In One!!

Anatomy Atlas - High resolution maps of the entire human body. You can pinpoint specific parts of the anatomy and you're guided with accompany text, graphics and animations!

Medical Encyclopedia - A detailed visual encyclopedia loaded with text and illustrations linked together

Illustrated Medical Dictionary - A complete medical dictionary containing over 82,000 entries including 63,000 definitions, 11,000 illustrations, and more than 73,000 audio pronunciations! It's like having a printed dictionary in your computer, except you don't have to reach any farther than your keyboard  to look up the meaning of a word.  Just type in a word into the dictionary search window, or select a word using your mouse, and the dictionary will find the meaning of the word instantly! And the "audio pronunciation feature" reads the word to you so you can hear exactly how to pronounce it correctly!

human body

This a complete guide to the human body and how it works! And what's really cool is that the different programs all work together so you can drill-down and get as much detailed information as you need!

And let me tell you, there's a TON of information here!! Check this out:

Over 500 3-D models and animations

Over 3,000 detailed illustrations and graphics!

All together there's over 5,000 screens that cover virtually everything about the human body!

Human Body

You're gonna love the high resolution images. You can print them out right from each screen!

One feature that I thought was really great is something called, the "X-Ray Viewer"! This lets you see different layers of the body at the same time. Here's a screen shot I took of one of the slides. Sorry the screen shot isn't better, but the graphics in this program are so detailed it's tough to show it with a small screen shot!

Anyway, I brought up one of the illustrations, which was the muscle system. Then I clicked on the "X-Ray viewer", which has a "slider handle" that you just click on and drag up and down. Wherever you have the slide it shows an "X-Ray" view of the part of the body that you have the slider over! So you can look at one illustration, click on the X-Ray viewer and slide it down and now you can see what's "below" the body system you're viewing! I was looking at the muscular system and right around the neck level I clicked on the "X-Ray viewer". So at that point it shows the circulatory system just below where I clicked! Very cool!!!

human body

Here's another feature I liked called, "Virtual Reality" technology lets you move specific anatomical models to view them from a a variety of angles and perspectives. This is one of the 3-D models. Right below the model there's a section with some text that are detailed illustrations you can click on. (Again, I had to make these screen shots small so that I could include them here. The actual photos you see on the program are MUCH larger!) So you can click on an area of the diagram and you quickly zoom-in and get a "close up" view! If you double-click on an area of the photo, it'll bring up a page of text that gives you detailed information about what you're viewing!.

Plus you can click on a navigation arrow and now see the same section of the body from the side. Click again and now you see if from another angle! Cool, heh?

Human Body

There's just so much to this program and so many features, I can't list them all. Hopefully this will give you a taste of why I like this so much! And this retails for $29.99 (and worth every penny) but you don't have to pay that! You've not even going to pay half of that! Because today we've got this hugely popular program for just $9.97 and US shipping is FREE!!! But you better hurry cause these will be gone pretty quick!

P.S. If you have teenagers or college students, how much easier would it be for them to use this to help them with their biology homework assignments!!! Are you kidding me?? They'll love it!!

WOW!! You've Never Had THIS Much Fun With BUGS!!

You'll Actually Look Forward To Having Flies In Your House!

Smack 'Em DEAD With This Electronic, Bug-ZAPPIN' Gadget!

You Haven't Lived Till You've Zapped A Bug With An Electronic Tennis Racket!

You'll Have A BLAST As You Go Crazy With Bug-Zappin' Power!!

Best Part? No More Bug Guts After You Swat!
(Hey, had to have somethin' practical in there!)

OK, WOW!! These went like CRAZY yesterday! I knew they were going to be popular, cuz, hey, who doesn't like electrocuting bugs? Well, even I was shocked (pardon the pun)! A BIG Thank YOU to the hundreds who ordered - I promise - you're gonna LOVE these things! If you didn't get a change to order, come on - you're missin' out on one of life's best times! Nothin' like sitting our your couch and zappin' flies with an electronic tennis racket! Check 'em out!

Like I mentioned yesterday, we've been TRYING to get these for over a year now! Now that we finally have 'em all I can say is: You're gonna love this thing! It looks like an ordinary tennis racket, but it's not! This baby is a bug zapper! REALLY! You just turn this bad boy on and swat yourself a fly, mosquito, ect, and ZAP!!! It's dead!

SOOOOO much more fun than a stupid old fly swatter - and man, that little "CRRRAAACKK" you hear when insect meets highly-charged metal is VERY satisfying :-)

OK, sure, it sounds like I'm maybe enjoying myself at a level that is just a bit south of healthy, but I just can't STAND all the summer bugs that get into the house - I gotta get those kids to close the doors! Oh, and the flies! Don't they just drive ya NUTS? Always buzzin' around your food, your kitchen, head, kids, dog, crawling on your TV set - ARRGHH! Well, with this little racket in hand, you'll get an evil grin each time one of those little critters invades your close personal space! Heck, you may even start looking forward to those little buggers getting inside! A quick swing a POW! Flyin' into your house was their last mistake! That'll teach 'em to mess with ya! BRUAHAHAHAHAH!!

Plus, these are much cleaner to use than a regular swatter or some nasty bug spray! Think about it - no more squished fly guts smeared all over your kitchen counter (window, screen, arm, face)! This ZAPS 'em dead - a much cleaner method if you ask me (and did I mention it was a LOT more fun?) Oh, and bug spray - YUK - you don't want to use that in your house!

How do they work? Just pop in a couple AA batteries, and press and hold the button at the side. In a matter of seconds, it builds up a surprisingly high-voltage charge (don't touch the grate if you're pressing the button - trust me on that one)! Swat the bug and POP!! He's (literally) toast!

OK, seriously, you've gotta give these a try - you really haven't lived until you've fried a fly or mosquito using an electric tennis racket! I personally had a set of these last year and you'd be surprised how many people absolutely LOVED 'em! Without exception, every friend and family member that came over asked what it was, then went off hunting. So, these are either REALLY cool or I hang out with LOTS of bizarre people! Either way, you won't know till you try!

Your price for all this bug-bustin' bliss? Just $9.97 and US Shipping is FREE! Hey, you just can't buy this much fun for that kind of money anymore! Grab yourself one - you'll LOVE it!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=5157

PS - These really are sweet - you've gotta give 'em a try. Hey, if you don't love it like I do, just send it back within 60 days for a refund - nothin' to lose - and you know you want to try it :-)!

Citatoe

Do you love a good quote? Do you keep a book of quotes so that you can keep all your favorite ones handy? I hope you do, because I know I do, and I’d hate to be weird. I like to include quotes in my correspondence, especially inspirational or uplifting ones; they just add that special something to a letter or card.
Citatoe is a site devoted to helping you store your favorite quotations. They even have a demo account that you can use to try the site out before spending your time registering – if it turns out you won’t use it.

I recommend starting by using the demo account. Click the word Try on the yellow banner and it will fill in the demo account login information, then click the Sign In button and you’ll be whisked away to the demo account. To get started once you’re inside the demo account, scroll down and click the Add Book link.
Title your book, and then you’ll need to find it on the listing of books, they’re alphabetical. My demo book is titled Rawr. Once you click into the book you’ve created you’ll see a form to fill out. Type your quote in, add some tags so that it is easy to search, and then press ctrl+enter to add it to the book. The page will refresh with the quote and the form to add another quote.

If you decide that this would be a great way to store your favorite quotes you’ll want to log out of the demo account by clicking sign out at the top of the page. Then when you’re back on the home page, you’ll want to click Register to create your own account. All you need is an e-mail address, and to create a password. You’ll be immediately taken to your very own book area where you can start building your collection of quotes.

What I did was make books by who said or wrote the quotation, because it stores them in alphabetical order sorting the books by the person’s name makes them easy to find.

Check it out today!

Professional Level Desktop Publishing Made Affordable!

Incredible Power At Your Fingertips!

I'm so excited! I bet you've never seen anything quite like this one before! We have Page Designer Pro and it's some really amazing, professional-level desktop publishing software that's gonna absolutely blow you away! This makes PrintShop look like a toy! Check this out:

First off, this is a LOT like Adobe InDesign, just an amazing $692 LESS than what Adobe gets for their version! It's meant for - and does - pretty much the same thing - pro level design and print. You can literally create ANYTHING you can imagine with this software. This is truly a high-end desktop publishing solution and the power it brings is amazing. Talk about blown-away by what you can do with a computer and printer!!

Page Designer Pro

The first thing you'll notice when you start it up is your choice between a really handy wizard interface or the option to start a project from scratch. When you first start playing with it, just go ahead and take a look at what those wizards can do for you (over 2000 designs)! You'll be amazed at just how quickly you can create ads, brochures, business stationery, calendars, cards, letterheads, invoices, flyers, forms, newsletters, notices, handouts, event programs, posters, banners, price lists, reports, announcements, invitations, greeting cards and TONS more!

What that brings to the table with the amazing "wizards" is easily enough to justify this fantastic program, but that's only the beginning! After you're done checking out the wizards, go ahead and start a project from scratch - you're gonna be absolutely floored at how quickly you can produce professional level projects! This is the kind of software they use in professional print shops! Once you start messing around with it, you'll discover very soon you start to feel like a professional graphics artist!

As for features, this thing is the 800LB gorilla of desktop publishing! For example, just wait till you start playing with dozens and dozens of preset color schemes for your projects! Change the look and feel of your project in a mouse click! Great to use with the wizards to instantly change the look and feel of, well, ANY project!

Oh, and wait till you feast your mouse on the professional layout tools! Talk about a kid in a candy store! This has everything you need (and probably more)! We're talking intelligent text fitting (nice), kerning, hyphenation, drop caps, smart quotes, named styles, movable ruler and guides, precision placements, rotation, calendar tools, tables, brush / pencils, gradients, fills, shapes, all kind of text, frames and TONS more! I could fill the length of this review with JUST the tools at your disposal!

Page Designer Pro

PLUS, you've absolutely got to check out the Text Composition Tools - you'll love these things! Get this - you have all the following at your beck and call: Word count, spell checker, search & replace, a thesaurus, AutoCorrect, AutoSpell, over 300 new fonts, and - get this - a proofreader! That's right - you can have the program actually "read" your text and it can make suggestions for improvements! Now THAT'S cool!

Another feature you'll really love is the amazing "Text On A Path" tool! Here's how it works - You create a "path" using your mouse in any shape you want - a squiggly line, a square, a letter - whatever you can dream up. Then, double-click and start typing - your text will actually follow along the path you created, twisting and turning all along the way! Soooo cool!

You've gotta try the QuickShapes too! These aren't just the lousy shapes you drop into Word or something. These are basically intelligent clipart! Choose a shape, drag & drop it on your document, then adjust each angle and dimension using the little handles! Oh, and you can fill the shapes, do different "styles" , put in a gradient, add a photo, and MORE! The options are fantastic!

Oh, but the drawing fun isn't just limited to the QuickShapes! This has an amazing arsenal of drawing tools that you have to see to believe! You can sketch freehand, apply some really cool styles, make custom shapes, and create all kinds of eye-popping graphics in minutes! You could literally design your own clipart!

What if you have a photo you want to drop in? Yup, not only can you add any photo, you can even enhance it right in the program so it looks amazing in just a few mouse clicks! Once it's in the program, there's dozens and dozens of ways you can use it!

Page Designer Pro

Hey, have you ever needed to place a photo in with a bunch of text and couldn't get the text to "flow" right around it? Sometimes the text runs though your photos, sometimes the text gets blocked out, pushed around, or just ends up looking wrong. Well, this lets you easily reshape, rotate, and adjust your text frames to make your next project look like a magazine spread!

Heck, did I mention this can even create a website for you? Imagine the power above put into a web design program! It has all the tools you need to quickly and easily create professional looking webpages! Add text, graphics, animated gif, music, java - it can do it!

As if all that wasn't enough, this can also do mail merges, has some really cool transparency effects (so you can "see through" objects that are on top of other objects), mind-blowing versatility in printing, allows for outstanding PDF output, and even includes a PANTONE library if you're outputting your work for press publication! Told ya it was loaded!

BONUS!!! BONUS!!! Can you believe this? It also includes a second CD with a whoppin' 100,000 graphics crammed onto it! Clip art, photos, it's all there and at your fingertips! This alone is worth the price of the software! With 100,000 images to choose from, you'll always be able to find the exact graphic you need for your projects!

Your cost for all this? Just $7.97 and US shipping is FREE! After using this for just a little bit, I can't believe we got these for this kind of price! Our supplier must be nuts!

It's really the best $7.97 you'll ever spend on desktop publishing! Honestly, if we were selling it for the $40 retail, it would STILL be well worth the price!  This is truly a professional level program that looks and works an awful lot like Adobe's $700 InDesign! If you want to do some serious desktop publishing, there's never been a cheaper way to get serious about it! $7.97!! Once you start using it, you'll agree that it's crazy for anyone to pass this by! You're not gonna believe what you get for less than $10!

You've gotta give this a try because for this kind of money you just can't afford to pass it by!!

PS - Bad news? Only a limited quantity of these are available, so you need to get to the site ASAP to grab your copy! You'll be completely blown away at how you can get software this powerful for $7.97!!!

Here's this month's free calendar wallpaper! As always, it's 100% free, so head on over and grab one!

Bald River Falls (Photo contest winner)

This picture was taken on a very cold day in November of 2008. Location - Smoky Mtn Nat. Park

 Golden Canyon

This was taken in Death Valley Nat. Park near the overlook at Zabriski Point. It was early morning and the amazing golden light really turned the already gold-colored hills even more yellow.

Yellow Flower

Here's an extreme closeup of a yellow lily (OK, could be an orchid - I don't really know), taken last spring.

Here's June's wallpaper. It's all free, so enjoy!
