Quick Tips

Undo that Undo!

Now, I can't believe that out of the thousands of computer tips Worldstart has in their database, that this one has been overlooked for so long! Say you're tooling along, writing, doing graphics or whatever and you make a mistake. What do you do? That's right, hit Ctrl-Z! That's the “undo” command; the (almost) universal solution for mess-ups and mistakes!

So, what about when you want to undo and undo? Sounds messy, doesn't it? Good news, though, it's really, really easy and it works almost everywhere!

Just press Ctrl-Y. Yeah, when I say easy, I mean it! This key combination will bring back the mistake you thought you made as quickly as it went away!

Looks like we made this past week's question a little too tricky for everyone. It's true that the ENIAC is considered by most to be the first digital electronic computer, but if you dig a little deeper you'll find that the ABC computer was not only developed four years earlier, but also was the first to have an internal clock. A patent faux pas prevented the ABC from being recognized as the first and the ENIAC was crowned instead. Despite this, the origin of digital computing technically belongs to the ABC computer.

Stop by the Worldstart site and check out this week's question: "What was the original name of the Internet when it started?"

Think you've got the answer? Well, what are you waiting for, then?

What is considered the World's first electronic digital computer?

The Program Every PC User Has Always Wanted!

Finally - An Easy Way To Move SOFTWARE To Another Computer!!

We're Talking Point & Click!!!

This Will Blow You Away!

WOW! We have just found what I think is about the coolest program EVER! It's called PC Mover and if you're ever, in your lifetime, going to get another computer, you REALLY (And I mean REALLY, REALLY, REALLY) need to grab this title!!! PLUS - You're gonna save over 70% off of retail! WOW!!

What's it do? Glad you asked! This software allows you to move the programs and files from your old PC onto your new PC! Here's a video overview (click the picture below - scroll down when you get to the page - it's a YouTube video with a review of the product):

What's got me so excited about this software is that it can actually move programs from one PC to another. Moving files is easy (just use a CD or flash drive), but moving software is always a problem.

First off, trying to move most programs by yourself is all but impossible. Sure, the main program might be under your Program Files folder, but during setup, it probably installed lots of DLL files under your Windows System directory, registered those same files with Windows, maybe it placed shortcuts, added startup items, dropped in templates - well, you get the idea. When most software is installed, you get components and pieces of the software scattered all over your hard drive. Manually finding every part and putting it back on a new computer, placed where it should be and registered with Windows is almost impossible.

Of course, you could sit in front of your computer for hours on end reinstalling all the software that was on your old PC, but talk about a hassle. Finding all the CDs, locating all the serial numbers, downloading updates and sitting around all day just isn't my idea of fun. Besides, I know for a fact that I personally have several programs on my computer right now where the original install CD has been lost! If you fall into that same category, then this software not only saves you tons of time and frustration, but tons of money as well! We took the software for a spin just to see if it works as advertised. Check this out...

Our Test Results - WOW!!!

April, our MS Office Tips writer, just purchased a new Vista PC. Unfortunately, she had tons of programs on her old XP computer - many of which she simply couldn't find the CDs for or that had been downloaded years ago. She was looking at literally hundreds of dollars in new software to replace those CDs. So, I told her I needed to test this new software and she enthusiastically decided to give it a try.

First off, we were very impressed that the whole process is "wizard" driven. You don't really need to know much more than how to click your mouse in order to make this software work!

The first step was to install the software on both PCs - easy enough. Then you attach them with the included USB link cable (just plug it into each PCs USB port). Again, so far, so good.

At this point, we were ready for some decisions. First you have the option to exclude files - say you don't want it to transfer .Tiff files for some reason. Just tell the software not to transfer those We wanted all the data files, so we left this alone. Then it asks you what folders you want to transfer over. This is mostly for your data files, so we left the checkmarks in for all the folders that had data.

Next, and this was the cool part, the software scans the old computer and finds ALL the software that has been installed. It gives you a list with little check boxes so you can select only the programs you want to transfer to the new machine! Now that's slick! I don't know about you, but I have loads of programs on my PC that I never use but haven't bothered to uninstall, so being able to select only the programs I want to transfer is great! April found she only needed about half of the stuff she had on her old computer transferred, so she unchecked everything else. Oh, and it even tells you when you already have the same software on your new PC (this program will not overwrite existing files, so you don't need to worry about data loss).

After all the selecting is done, you simply leave the computer to do its thing. The software will transfer all your files and programs automatically! Depending on how fast your computers are, and how much data you're moving, this can take some time. So, I recommend doing this before you go to bed. When you wake up in the morning, your new computer will be all set to go with all your old software and files on it! That's what we did with April's, and it was just awesome how well it worked. All the programs that we transferred worked perfectly on the new computer - no problems at all - not one, zilch. This software really does the job!! It's awesome!

I'm planning on a new PC sometime next year, but I've been dreading all the reinstalls that go with it. My current PC is something like 5 years old, so I have a HUGE amount of software and data on it. It would take me weeks to get a new PC to the way I like it. With this software, I'll be able to do it a half hour before I go to bed! I love it!!

Oh, and this is cool too. If you're not planning on a new PC right away, don't worry! The software is upgradable to the newest version whenever you decide to make the switch! So, if you're planning on a new PC anytime in the future, grab this title now and stick it on your shelf!

Oh, and I'm not the only one who thinks this is fantastic. Look at the reviews!

Q:
What is the Windows Clipboard?

A:
The Windows clipboard is used to temporarily store stuff. This "stuff" can come in the form of just about anything. Images, files, documents, etc.—they can all be placed on the clipboard. Once something has been copied to the clipboard it can be pasted into another location.

The clipboard isn't a program you can actually access and play with. It's a built-in windows component that works transparently. When you copy or cut, the info is put onto this clipboard. When you paste, the information that's on the clipboard is put into whatever it is you're working on.

For instance, if I have some information on a web page that I want to put into a word processing document, this is what would happen:

1. I highlight and copy (CTRL-C) the text from the web page. When I do this, the text is placed on the clipboard.

2. Now, I open my word processor (MS Word 2000 and up must be open before you copy). Right now, the info is still sitting on the clipboard and can be pasted into my word processor or any other program that can handle text.

3. OK, now I right-click a blank area of my word processing document and choose Paste from the resulting menu (or just use CTRL-V) . This will take the info that's currently sitting on the clipboard (i.e. the web page text in this case) and attempt to put it into my word processing document.

I say "attempt to put the info on the clipboard into the word processor" because sometimes the info that's on your clipboard is not compatible with the program you're using. For example, if you try to paste a picture into notepad, that just isn't going to work.

For example, lets say you were working on a report in MS Word and you would like to quote some information you uncovered on the web. Rather than printing out the web page and re-typing the block of text you would like to quote, you can highlight the text on the webpage and copy it to the clipboard (highlight by holding down your left mouse button and dragging it over the section of text you would like to have. Copy it by right-clicking that section of text and selecting Copy from the menu that pops up).

Now, head back to MS Word and position the cursor where you would like to insert the text. Hit CRTL-V (or click the Edit menu, Paste ), and presto, the web page text you copied has now been pasted into your Word doc.

MS Office

The Word Highlighter

Have you ever been working on a Word document and you come to a point where you need to enter a fact that you're just not sure about? Do you really want to stop this very minute to look up the information?

I'm not sure about you, but I hate to stop every few minutes to look something up. I'd rather keep going with the typing part, look information up after I'm done and double check the facts during the editing stage.

So, the new question becomes: "How do I remember all the little places where the information needs to be double checked"? I mean, what can you use to remind yourself of the places you know you may need to change later on?

There's a neat little feature in MS Word that can help you with this situation. It's called a highlight. It works just like a highlighter you would use on printed pages. (I can remember the countless highlighters I used in college and that just makes me shudder. Fortunately, I like this one a whole lot better!)

The Highlight button looks like this:

Readers with Word 2007 will find this on the Home tab of the Ribbon, older versions of Word have it on the Formatting toolbar.

To use the Highlighter, you can first highlight (select) the text to be highlighted and then click the Highlight button.

That's it! The selected text should now be highlighted, just like the good old fashioned marker type (except it doesn't make a mess on the monitor).

If you've got a lot of highlighting spread throughout the document, then this other suggestion might be a more efficient way to use the highlighter feature.

Simply turn on the feature by clicking the Highlight button.

Once the highlighter is activated, your mouse pointer will change into a little highlighter.

At this point, you're ready to use the mouse to click, hold and drag the highlighter across the text.

This can be done in as many different places as you need. The only catch is that you have to turn the highlighter feature off.

To turn the highlighter off, you can either hit the Esc key or click the Highlight button again.

Feel the need for a little more color in your life?

Maybe you're someone who doesn't go for the traditional yellow highlighter. Maybe you like to color code information or you simply don't like yellow.

Is there a solution for you?

Why, yes there is!

By clicking on the little arrow to the right of the highlighter in the button, a color palette will be displayed.

This will allow you to change the color of the highlighter.

To remove the coloring completely, highlight (select) the text and select the None or No Color choice (again, depends on the version of the program you use) from the color palette.

Or, turn on the highlighter by clicking the button and then rehighlighting the text with the exact same color. (If you rehighlight with a different color, all you'll accomplish is a color change, but the highlight will still be there).

Now that you have a digital highlighter, have fun!

Time Is Running Out! Grab This Before They're Gone!

You'll Never Be Able To Get It This Cheap Again - From ANYONE!

WOW! I can't wait to share this one with ya! We just scored an amazing deal on my new favorite software - Iolo System Shield! Let me tell ya, this is NOT your run-of-the-mill Internet Security Suite! This does an amazing job of keeping your computer safe from hackers, spyware, and viruses - but read on, because the way this is implemented is far superior to ANY software like this I've used in the past! This really isn't your typical security suite - and you're gonna love it!  I am personally running this software on my computer and it's by far the best I've used! I can't tell you how impressed I am with this - if you value your safety - and system performance, you've got to check this out!

OK, first off, I know you're probably already running anti-virus, anti-spyware, and a firewall - so why do you want this? Well, the thing that impresses me the most with this software suite is the absolute speed it brings to the table! Not just in scanning and such, but the very real lack of system hogging it does. Most suites like this are horrible - they really slow your system to a crawl - not this one! I uninstalled all my previous security software and tired this instead - WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! Frankly, there's a good chance that if you're currently using Norton, Mcafee, ect, when you replace them with this you're going to think you got a new computer! The difference is THAT dramatic! This speed-up alone is enough reason to switch if you ask me!

Next, I absolutely LOVE how this just runs in the background and stays out of the way. So many security programs love to tell you that they are updating your system, getting new virus definitions, scanning, whatever. It's an all day long affair of acknowledging boxes and virtually patting your software on the back, "Good boy - I'm glad you downloaded some updates!" Well, those annoyances are GONE with this - it just works in the background and updates itself when necessary without dozens of boxes telling you all about it - that alone was enough to make me switch! Of course, if it finds something serious, it'll let you know (all customizable too).

Oh, and let me tell you about the anti-virus - you're gonna love this! First, yes it keeps you safe from e-mail viruses, downloads, and monitors in the background - just like everyone's AV does. However, it's the little things that make you fall in love with this! First, don't you just HATE it when you're working on your computer and the stupid AV software comes up and starts a scan? Slows everything down - what a pain! This software will actually make sure the PC has been idle for a specified amount of time before it scans! It waits till you're away before it starts - is that cool or what??? Oh, and it pauses the scan if the PC starts getting used again! Again, this reason alone is enough to change! In fact, my wife read that and said, "Hey - I want this on my computer! My AV always starts scanning when I'm working!" So, one of my 3 installs is going there!

In addition, the anti-virus can be set to scan all files or just dangerous ones (saving time), can be set to scan all kinds of files, has HOURLY updates, can be set to scan when YOU want, and can even be set to exclude certain types of files if you want! Even scan incoming AND outgoing messages if you want - all fully customizable! Oh, and did I mention that it has a year of UNLIMITED tech support too in case you have trouble? WOW!!

Think that's great? Wait till you see the firewall! Blows Windows firewall away (along with every other firewall as far as I'm concerned)! First off, yes, it keeps hackers out - all firewalls do. But this also protects you in other ways. It can monitor when a program is trying to access the internet and send all your personal info to the mothership. That, to me, is HUGE! You never know if that program you just installed is completely trustworthy - so this keeps you safe!

Another fantastic idea that I'm really excited about is the "Idle Lock" - Get this - you can set it so that if you're not using the computer for a specified amount of time (set by you) that the network locks down - nothing can come in or out! I've always said the most secure internet connection is the one that's unplugged when not in use - and this does that!! Oh, and you can also lock your computer down with the press of a mouse if you like - right from the main page!

This can also show you how many attacks it has blocked, block the attacker's IP address for a specified (by you) amount of time, and has a lot of fully customizable options. Truth is though, that the default settings work fine for me! Oh, and again, this seems like it doesn't slow anything down at all - in fact, if you're using a different firewall, this will probably speed things up! I know one thing for sure, I'm installing this on my laptop for travel - it's just too dangerous to surf using wireless networks without it!

Finally, this also includes a fantastic anti-spyware program! Just like the rest of it, it's really fast, stays out of the way, and just does the job! It automatically updates and scanning is a breeze - and fast too! I don't think I've ever seen a spyware can that was soooo fast - and it did a great job! Found a few minor things that it easily fixed!

OK, that's the main stuff, but I also wanted to mention how much easier to use this is than most other security software. First off, I think 90% of the users out there can just install it and forget it - the default settings are really a nice balance and should work well for just about every computer out there. If you want to change stuff, it's really easy to do and the program has an excellent help file that, quite frankly, most users will never ever need!

The price? You're not going to believe this one - we're talking just $9.97 and US shipping is FREE! This is the current version and retails for $49.95 (check Iolo's site - it's not cheap), so $9.97 is an amazing deal. 1 Year worth of support and updates too! Oh, works on XP, Vista, & Win 2000!

Oh, and get this - it's a 3 user license!! So you can install this on up to 3 different computers! That's way less than $4.00 per computer! Grab a friend or two and have them chip in! For less than $4.00 per computer, you just can't go wrong! It's amazing and it's what I am going to be running from now on!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4583

PS - Seriously, this is simply the best Anti-virus, Anti-Spyware, and Firewall software I've ever used and it's going to be on my machine from now on. My computer is soooo much faster now after getting rid of the other bloated software package I had been using - and this just has soooo many great options! Don't miss out!

Tip of the Day

Customizing Your Fonts and Colors

Did you know that you can customize the fonts and colors of all the Windows and Internet Explorer HTML pages on the Internet? Well, if you didn't before, you know now!

First, here is how you would change the colors for a standard window (for example, the My Documents window) in Windows.

1.) Go to Start, Control Panel to open the Control Panel.

2.) Double click on the Display icon (for Windows XP, you'll probably have to switch to the classic Control Panel view).

Alternately, you could replace steps 1 and 2 by right clicking on your desktop and choosing Properties. It's your choice.

3.) In the Display Properties window, go to the Appearance tab and click the Advanced button.

4.) In the Advanced Appearance window, click the drop down menu labeled Item and click on Window. That should be on the bottom of the list. (You may also change icon spacing, font and other options that are available on this list, if you so choose).

5.) The Color 1 box is the background color and the Color box is the text color. You can click on the box and select a color you would like for the background and the foreground (text).

6.) When you're finished, press OK for the Advanced Appearance window and OK for the Display Properties window.

If you now go to any of your folders on the computer, the background and text colors should have changed to what you've selected.

If you would like to have all the HTML pages in Internet Explorer to have these background and foreground colors as well, you'll have to enable this option in Internet Explorer. Here's how.

7.) Open an Internet Explorer window and go to Tools, Internet Options. Press the Accessibility button.

8.) In the Accessibility window, select all the options you would like. In the example, I have selected to ignore the colors, font styles and font sizes specified by Web pages, but do whatever you'd like. When you're finished, press OK.

In other words, the pages that are displayed will have the background color and text colors that you specified (steps 1 through 6 from above), rather than the colors or fonts specified by that Web page. (If you have your own style sheet, you can use that by selecting that option).

If you want just the Web pages in Internet Explorer to have a certain color that is different than the colors specified for all windows, you can set it through the Internet Options. Here is how you do that.

9.) Open an Internet Explorer window and go to Tools, Internet Options.

10.) Press the Colors button to edit the color options. When finished, press OK.

This will allow you to change the colors for the pages and for the links on the pages that are displayed in Internet Explorer. (Selecting Use Windows colors will set the colors to what you specified in steps 1 through 6 from above).

11.) Press the Fonts button to edit the font options. When you're done, press OK.

This will allow you to change the font for the pages that are displayed in Internet Explorer.

Note: Depending on what you prefer, you can use a combination of the above steps to make the Internet pages certain colors and fonts and the standard windows to have certain colors and fonts as well. Once you make all your selections, your computer will look brand new with all of your different and exciting colors and fonts. Yes!

Take me Fishing

Some of my fondest memories in my childhood are of spending time with my dad. One of the things he liked to do was take us fishing. So while I was reminiscing I found this fabulous fishing site.

Welcome to Take Me Fishing where you can find information on fishing, boating, and caring for the water. You can also learn about your local resources to get out on the water. The drop down box in the top middle of the page in the area that says "Rediscover the joy of boating and fishing", has some usual sections you can hop to like: Boat Buying Tips, Boat Registration, Fishing Licenses, Lunar Phases, Marine Weather, and Tides just to name a few.

On the side menu you have the options of Search, Fishing, Boating, Family Fun, Safety, and Events. The Search section is great! You can search for local marinas, where you can rent a boat, tackle and bait shops, and even events!

Fishing — Here you will learn about why people enjoy fishing, where you can fish at, how to fish (if you never had or are a bit rusty), getting a license, and even how to identify your catch. I remember my dad would take us fishing for blue gill, and we never caught any. I am a lousy fisherman, but it was a lot of fun.

Boating — Now boating isn't for everyone but if it is for you or you'd like to try it then this section is a great resource. Why do people boat? Well you can find out in "Why Boating". Other things you can learn about are How to Boat, Buying or Selling a Boat, Boater Education Programs, Trailering Info & Laws, Registration & Guidelines, and Related Boating Activities.

Family Fun — this section teaches you how to go about Getting Kids Involved, Quality Time, Related Hobbies, and National Fishing & Boating Week (which I wish was a National Holiday that you got time off for so I could take my dad out fishing.)

Safety — Of course this where you learn about Fishing and Boating safety, and how to where those life preservers!

Events — Here you can search for fishing and boating events, learn more about National Fishing and Boating Week, and the Take Me Fishing Tour. You can also submit an event here if you are involved in one that isn't listed.

Now I'm off to the bait shop to get some worms, and go fishing.

Bald River Falls (Photo contest winner)

This picture was taken on a very cold day in November of 2008. Location - Smoky Mtn Nat. Park

 Golden Canyon

This was taken in Death Valley Nat. Park near the overlook at Zabriski Point. It was early morning and the amazing golden light really turned the already gold-colored hills even more yellow.

Yellow Flower

Here's an extreme closeup of a yellow lily (OK, could be an orchid - I don't really know), taken last spring.
