The Week in Technology

Before purchasing a product or service, most Americans research the item online. Several of the top reviews found during their research usually include articles by bloggers, though most Americans do not realize that many of these so called "reviews" by bloggers are actually compensated recommendations. This practice of companies paying bloggers to positively review their products and services has caught the eye of the Federal Trade Commission, according to the Associated Press. The FTC will be creating new guidelines this summer that would state that the agency can go after bloggers (and the companies that compensate them) for any false claims or failure to disclose conflicts of interest.

Google has purchased a million phone numbers for the upcoming release of their product, Google Voice, a phone management service provided by the search engine giant. Google has a closed beta for its new service, only available to previous GrandCentral users, though the public release is expected to occur in the upcoming month.

The TomTom GPS device will now include the voice of Homer Simpson, the latest celebrity voice available to TomTom users. Owners of the TomTom device can visit the TomTom website and download the voice for a small fee.

It's pretty shocking how fast technology moves, isn't it? Back in the mid 90's, a normal home computer had a 75mhz Pentium 1 processor, 4 megabytes of RAM and, if you were lucky, a 1 gigabyte hard drive. Now we've got quad core processors, terabytes of hard drive space and gigabytes of RAM to play with! Just keeping up with all of the changes could make anyone a guru in no time!

Knowing that, this week's question should be a breeze for all of you.

"Kilobyte, Megabyte, Gigabyte...what comes next?"

I know you've all got this one in lockdown, so head over to the Worldstart site and prove it!

Don't Let Disaster Strike Your Computer!

The Ultimate 1-2 Punch!

Amazing Software Recovers Deleted Files - We're Talking Point & Click!

Recover Files From Internal / External Hard Drives, Memory Cards, Flash Drives, MORE!

*** HUGE BONUS - Includes The Best Back-Up Software - Ever! ***

You'd Have To Be Crazier Than An Outhouse Rat To Miss This One!

It happens to all of us sooner or later - we click Delete (or press Format) and suddenly realize that we just killed the wrong file! Oh, that is a sick feeling, isn't it? Truth is, if you're using a computer, digital camera, flash drive, or any kind of device that stores data you WILL eventually delete an important file! We get e-mails constantly from people asking how to get back irreplaceable photos, critical documents, tax records, music etc - it ain't no fun losing important data!

Hey, only two kinds of people in this world - those that have lost critical files and those that WILL!

What do you do when disaster strikes? You know, when you realize you just accidently formatted a memory card and lost all the photos from your once-in-a-lifetime vacation. Or maybe you just accidently deleted an important document you've spent days working on. Perhaps your hard drive is starting to fail and you've just lost access to your data (been there, done that). Maybe all your music was on your MP3 player and now it seems to be gone.

What do you do now?

Does the sweat start to bead up on your forehead? Does your face turn red? Does your pulse quicken and your breathing get shallow? Do you feel that gut twisting panic start to sweep over you?

Relax!

If you have Search & Recover 5 on your computer all is not lost - not even close! THIS is the go-to software for when you need to get data BACK from the digital darkness! This phenomenal software can recover your data - even when it seems hopelessly lost forever in the abyss! PLUS we just got an absolutely amazing deal on the current version that you'd better be sitting down for! WOW - we're gonna save you some serious money today!

Search and Recover 5

First of all, Search & Recover makes getting back deleted files as simple as a few mouse clicks! Really! Once you try it, you'll be completely blown away!! It wasn't that long ago that the only people who had access to this kind of data recovery technology were high-tech pros in white lab coats - and let me tell ya - you could easily shell out HUNDREDS to get files back the way this software does!

This has several really amazing options for recovery too! Unlike some programs, this lets you select the category of files you're looking for! Have it search for deleted photos and movies, have it look for songs & sounds, have it look for emails - or have it look for ANY kind of deleted file! No matter what you need to find, this makes it quick and easy to recover!

Oh, and get this - it even has this powerhouse option called "Total Recovery" that finds all the deleted files in an area (like a folder or drive) recovers them all at once for you! Outstanding! So, even if you have a DISASTER (like an accidental formatting of a data drive / memory card / flash drive or you delete a critical folder), THIS can get it back for you! Talk about a lifesaver!

Plus, using it is oh-so-simple - we're talkin' point & click here! Really! Just tell it what you're looking for, sit back and relax! It will scan your drive and give you a complete report of everything it finds! From there, just click the files you want to recover!

You read that right - if you can use a mouse, you can use this incredible software!

Talk about SUPERCHARGED SOFTWARE too! This can even recover data on a drive that was formatted - now THAT'S impressive! We're talking pretty much anything too - internal hard drives, external hard drives, flash drives, and even memory cards! It can recover 'em all!

Oh, and this is FANTASTIC NEWS for anyone with a digital camera! If you've ever accidently formatted a memory card that had pictures on it you wanted, you know how much that hurts! Now, just pop your memory card into your camera (or card reader), hook up to your computer and run this software! It will recover your priceless photos in no time! WOW!

OK, I know what you're thinking (didn't know I was a mind reader, did ya)! Let me guess - "OK, that's all well and good, but I'm going to wait and buy this after I have a problem."

I completely understand - but keep this in mind. Once a file has been deleted on your computer, it's only a matter of time before it gets permanently overwritten by something else, and when that happens, it can never be recovered!

That's why you MUST have this software standing by, ready to go at a moments notice! Wait too long, and nothing can help!

PLUS - That's not all! Recovery is great, but even better would be to have a backup! I mean, think about it - what would happen if right now, as you were reading this, your hard drive completely died? Do you have a current backup? You should - we've seen it happen again and again - people get so complacent thinking that everything is going to be fine in their computer forever. Then, in the blink of an eye, disaster strikes and all their data is gone! Years of photos - gone! Entire music libraries - vaporized! All your documents, files, programs - wiped out! Just think - what would you lose if your computer died right now?

Well, this comes to the rescue (again)! This is the absolute BEST way to back up your computer! EVER! This can create an exact copy ("image" in geek-speak) of your hard drive! And, keepin' with the theme - it's super simple!

Here's how it works - you launch the wizard, follow the prompts, and create an image of your hard drive - you'll be amazed at how easy it really is - and you'll wonder why you haven't been backing up all along! Then, if disaster strikes, you can run a wizard and restore your computer back to EXACTLY the way it was when you created the image! Every file, every folder, even every program - just the way you left them! Now THAT'S the way to recover! Usually you can be back up and running in an hour! AMAZING!

My Personal Little Horror Story -

A couple years back I was testing some software on my computer. I did the install, rebooted, and the computer was totally useless. It wouldn't boot, Windows was totally corrupted - it looked like a real disaster. Can you imagine how much work it was to get that going again?

Surprise! I was back up and running in about 45 minutes! Luckily, I had made an image of the drive and I simply restored that image! All my data, programs, etc were ready to go and in less than an hour I was back at the computer like nothing had happened! Everything was EXACTLY the way it was when I made the image!

Having an image is SOOOOOOO much easier then trying to reinstall windows, spending a day getting up to date with your patches, installing all your programs (and trying to find all the serial numbers), and getting all your data back on your computer (assuming there was any left). Why risk lost data, hours of work, and lost of frustration when you can make an image? In an hour you could be back up and running like nothing ever happened!

Disk Imaging software is normally expensive too - we're talking $80 or so - and one of the best imaging programs I've run across is actually included with this program! Even if you don't think you're gonna need the recovery software, the disk image software included with this makes it a must-have!

As if all the above weren't enough, this also has what it calls a File Terminator! This part of the software can take sensitive files and delete them permanently and forever - nothing can recover them! This is fantastic if you have sensitive information on your computer that you just don't want anyone else to ever had access to!

Important financial documents, bank statement, loan info, stock records - I'm sure you can think of a few files on your computer right now that you wouldn't want strangers to have access to! Well, when you're done with them, this can make 'em disappear - forever!

Just enable the feature in Search & Recover and it will add a Terminator item to your right-click menu! Just right-click any item you want gone forever, and hit Terminate! It's that easy!

Your price for all of this? Well, first - let's look at what it's worth! File recovery program, hmm - $40. Imaging program - $40. File Shredder program - $30. Your total cost SHOULD be $110 - but it's NOT!!

Your price? Ready? Just $14.97 and US shipping is FREE! This is the current version you pay $40 in the stores for! Really! We made a special deal with the publisher for you because we were so impressed with it! Just wait till you try it - it's the one program no computer user should be without!

PS - This special price is only for a limited number of units. Once we surpass our allocation, the price will increase to $39.97, so make sure you get to the site ASAP!

Q:
I downloaded a bunch of icons, but how do I change them for folders or shortcuts on my desktop?

A:
There's not a whole lot to it.

Just Right Click the folder or shortcut you want to change and choose Properties.

Now choose the Customize tab for a folder and select the Change Icon button.

image

For a shortcut click the Shortcuts tab then select the Change Icon button.

A window will appear showing a lot of different icons to choose from. The standard icons are in your System32\SHELL32.dll folder, but you can have icons in other folders, especially if you downloaded some...

Just click Browse and navigate to the other folder that you put the icons in.

MS Office

Analyzing Filtered Data With Charts

So, you like to use MS Excel's AutoFilter to take a look at your data?

Ever find yourself thinking that it would be nice to see the filtered data as a graphic?

Did you try it?

Yes, you can create a chart of the filtered data to truly "see" what the data has to show you.

But, did you know that the single chart you created can be used over and over again for analysis?

That's right! When you get ready to change the filter, don't even think about deleting that chart.

Simply leave the chart open and keep your eye on it as you adjust your filter.

Did you see it?

No, your eyes are not deceiving you - as you changed the filter, the chart changed too.

This always gives you the best possible picture of your data for analysis. You can't complain about that!

Tip of the Day

Snap To

Do you feel like you often use your mouse too much? Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to push keyboard shortcuts on anybody, because I know those can be hard to learn and remember. I'm talking about all the times you use your mouse for the most common tasks on your computer. For example, any time you change a setting on your PC, you have to press OK for it to take effect, right? Isn't it a little repetitive to have to press that button every single time? How would you like your mouse to automatically do it for you?

Well, it's possible and here's how. You just have to enable the "snap to" feature for your mouse. Go to Start>Control Panel and click on the Printers and Other Hardware link, or, If you're using Windows Vista, go to Start>Control Panel>Mouse.

Choose the Mouse link and then click on the Pointer Options tab. The second choice there is Snap To. Checkmark that box and click OK.

So, from now on, your mouse pointer will automatically move to the default button in any dialogue box. Every time you're doing something on your computer, the mouse pointer will take care of the finishing touches for you and you won't have to worry about moving your hand back over to your mouse. This feature helps to eliminate wrist injuries, such as carpal tunnel, because you don't have to use your mouse quite so much. Who can argue with that?!

Now, go and snap to it!

Today's Feature

DirectShow Flaw

Just a few days ago, Microsoft acknowledged a major security flaw in windows XP and older operating systems. This flaw has to do with the program Microsoft DirectShow that handles multimedia aspects in your system. While you may not actually see DirectShow appear on your screen, many applications and plugins use this program to display multimedia items on your screen throughout your average day on the computer.

This program by itself is not flawed, but when it is paired with certain exploited websites, it can cause major damage to your computer. Visiting one of these sites will trick you into downloading an infected AVI file that uses directshow to infect your system.

As of now, MS has not released an official patch for this issue. It is expected that the next round of security updates will permanently fix the issue, but until then there is a "fix-it" patch to temporarily close the hole. If you are concerned about this flaw, you can go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971778 . On this page, click the button below the words "enable workaround". This will edit your registry so this directshow flaw cannot harm your system.

Until next time, stay safe out there!

Earth Clinic

Welcome to Earth Clinic where you will find home remedies from all over the world and they’re not just for people but your pets as well. The nice thing about the site is it isn’t just a site filled with people posting home remedies, you’ll find replies to the home remedies from people who have had success with them or have questions, or whom it didn’t work for.

The site is broken down into several tabbed categories, they are:

Home – this will bring you back to the home page, where you started out from any section of the site. It includes a listing of the most popular pages, remedies, and a place where you can sign up for the site’s newsletter.

Remedies – here you will find remedies listed in alphabetical order, you can scroll down to browse them or you can select the letter of the ingredient you want to look up. Above the actual listing you’ll find a listing of the newest additions to the category.

Ailments – here you will find ailments listed from A to Z, alphabetically just like the remedy section.

Supplements – here you can find feedback from real people who have taken supplements. From vitamins to colloidal silver and omega-3’s, find out what people taking them have experienced. This has always been my problem with supplements; you never hear whether they’re really working for people. Now you can get the feedback you want to know before you give it a try yourself.

Pets – this is where I started my journey, because my dog has a very nasty ear infection and has proved unaffected by the medicine the vet gave her. So I’m trying out the remedy here with apple cider vinegar and water, and it seems to be really helping. She’s already stopped itching, and flapping her poor ear. We’re only on day two of the treatment but so far I’m considering it successful.

Mind & Body – here you’ll find information on healing programs, books you can read, and more.

Latest Posts – here you will find the latest posts, blog style. Just scroll down the page to read them.

What I like about the way posts work here is that there are different ways people can respond to a post. You can respond with a Yea, Nay, Question, Warning, etc. It really helps you to form an opinion about the successfulness of what has been suggested.

This is a great home remedy site, check it out today!

Know Yourself - From The Inside Out!

Mind-Blowing, Absolutely AMAZING Anatomy & Medical Software

Incredible, Jaw-Droppin' High-Res Maps Of The Entire Human Body!

Outstanding Medical Dictionary and Encyclopedia!

You've Just Got To See This!

human body

The BEST Selling Human Anatomy Software in the USA!!!

Human Body 360 - DVD Professional Edition!

Human Body

We've been waiting and waiting for this and it finally came in!! I heard this was a phenomenal program so I've been dying to see what all the hoopla was about! Now that I've seen it, all I can say is, WOW!! JUUUST AWESOME!!! This is the most fully updated and complete consumer anatomy software available anywhere!!! And when you load this into your computer you'll know why!

The program is called Human Body 360 - DVD Professional Edition, and it's actually THREE Programs In One!!

Anatomy Atlas - High resolution maps of the entire human body. You can pinpoint specific parts of the anatomy and you're guided with accompany text, graphics and animations!

Medical Encyclopedia - A detailed visual encyclopedia loaded with text and illustrations linked together

Illustrated Medical Dictionary - A complete medical dictionary containing over 82,000 entries including 63,000 definitions, 11,000 illustrations, and more than 73,000 audio pronunciations! It's like having a printed dictionary in your computer, except you don't have to reach any farther than your keyboard  to look up the meaning of a word.  Just type in a word into the dictionary search window, or select a word using your mouse, and the dictionary will find the meaning of the word instantly! And the "audio pronunciation feature" reads the word to you so you can hear exactly how to pronounce it correctly!

human body

This a complete guide to the human body and how it works! And what's really cool is that the different programs all work together so you can drill-down and get as much detailed information as you need!

And let me tell you, there's a TON of information here!! Check this out:

Over 500 3-D models and animations

Over 3,000 detailed illustrations and graphics!

All together there's over 5,000 screens that cover virtually everything about the human body!

Human Body

You're gonna love the high resolution images. You can print them out right from each screen!

One feature that I thought was really great is something called, the "X-Ray Viewer"! This lets you see different layers of the body at the same time. Here's a screen shot I took of one of the slides. Sorry the screen shot isn't better, but the graphics in this program are so detailed it's tough to show it with a small screen shot!

Anyway, I brought up one of the illustrations, which was the muscle system. Then I clicked on the "X-Ray viewer", which has a "slider handle" that you just click on and drag up and down. Wherever you have the slide it shows an "X-Ray" view of the part of the body that you have the slider over! So you can look at one illustration, click on the X-Ray viewer and slide it down and now you can see what's "below" the body system you're viewing! I was looking at the muscular system and right around the neck level I clicked on the "X-Ray viewer". So at that point it shows the circulatory system just below where I clicked! Very cool!!!

human body

Here's another feature I liked called, "Virtual Reality" technology lets you move specific anatomical models to view them from a a variety of angles and perspectives. This is one of the 3-D models. Right below the model there's a section with some text that are detailed illustrations you can click on. (Again, I had to make these screen shots small so that I could include them here. The actual photos you see on the program are MUCH larger!) So you can click on an area of the diagram and you quickly zoom-in and get a "close up" view! If you double-click on an area of the photo, it'll bring up a page of text that gives you detailed information about what you're viewing!.

Plus you can click on a navigation arrow and now see the same section of the body from the side. Click again and now you see if from another angle! Cool, heh?

Human Body

There's just so much to this program and so many features, I can't list them all. Hopefully this will give you a taste of why I like this so much! And this retails for $29.99 (and worth every penny) but you don't have to pay that! You've not even going to pay half of that! Because today we've got this hugely popular program for just $9.97 and US shipping is FREE!!! But you better hurry cause these will be gone pretty quick!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=5162

Human Body

P.S. If you have teenagers or college students, how much easier would it be for them to use this to help them with their biology homework assignments!!! Are you kidding me?? They'll love it!!

However I have given the authors full credit and will not remove their site links because you deserve to see where it comes from and they deserve to get credit for what they have written. Your use of this site is simply for educational purposes. For more computer-related help go to: CPEDLEY.COM for free software, advice and tips on low cost products which are very helpful.
