Middle Mouse Button Magic So there I was, taking advantage of the precious few moments I get to spend at home these days; catching up on my e-mail, and using Firefox (3.0.6) to browse a few websites I consider daily staples. I found out awhile ago that if I created folders for all of my favorite bookmarked sites that I could access them without scrolling down through all the “in-betweeners” that I use every great once in awhile. This made my web browsing prep time a little more streamlined in that I could open a few tabs (Ctrl-T), rattle off some mouse clicks and be information bound in no time at all. Good stuff, or so I thought... Well, last night I was going through my routine and I accidentally clicked the middle mouse button (the scroll wheel) over a folder containing my daily sites. Lo, and to my utter astonishment, the entire contents of the folder sprang to life in my browser window; each with it's own tab! I just shaved about a minute and a half off of my browsing preparation time! Thanks Firefox! Okay, maybe I was a bit quick to put all my praise on Mozilla's browsing beastie. In truth, Internet Explorer is capable of the exact same thing. I just happen to like Firefox better! ;) Give it a try! Just make sure you don't have a million bookmarks in the folder you click on. Q: A: To check, change your monitor resolution in Windows XP. Right-click your desktop and select Properties. Next, click the Settings tab. You'll see a little slider gizmo that goes left to right. Make sure it's set to 1024x768 or higher (the higher you go, the smaller an item will appear on your screen, so don't go too far). If you're using Windows Vista, right click on your desktop and click Personalize. All the way at the bottom you'll see Display Settings. Same results; just different path to get there!
Click OK. You may need to re-start your system. The other possibility is that the site you're looking at is poorly designed. The Super-Quick Word 2007 Table I mean you still have to insert the table, format any coloring, header rows, row height, etc…Wouldn't it be nice to start with a table that's a little closer to the finished product?Yeah, I thought it was a good idea too. So, are you ready to see your options? On the Insert tab you need the Table button. It's at this point that we're looking for something different. Instead of choosing a table size to insert, go all the way to the bottom and choose Quick Tables. Once you choose something it's inserted into the document and ready for editing. More than likely, you'll still want to make more changes to its appearance, and obviously their dummy data will have to be replaced, but it seems to me that you might find yourself finishing the job just a bit faster with this little head start. ~ April Did you like this tip? Firefox Smart Keywords If you have made the switch from Internet Explorer to Firefox (which many people have), there is a quick way for you to reach the Web sites you would like to visit. Firefox uses something called smart keywords and they are just special words that replace a bookmarked URL (a Web address). If you would like to give it a try, open up your Firefox browser and hit Ctrl + L. That will put the focus on the address bar, so you can start typing in your keywords. Firefox has a few predefined smart keywords such as Google (which opens up a Google search), dict (for a dictionary), wiki (for Wikipedia, the popular info site) and slang (which opens up an urban slang dictionary). These are all keywords that will work automatically for you if you use the smart keyword feature. Let's give it a try. Go to Firefox and hit Ctrl + L, then type google in the address bar. Using HOSTS to Block Malicious Web Sites I was looking through our computer tips archive the other day and found an article about computer HOSTS files. The article explains exactly what a HOSTS file is and how it can be used to block malicious Web sites. At the very end of the article, there's a short paragraph about how you can download a custom HOSTS file that will automatically block many of the known malicious Web sites on the Web today. As I was reading it, I decided the last paragraph of the article should probably be explained a little better. So, here we go! HOSTS files are on every computer. They contain a list of Web sites and the location of those sites. In a nut shell, when you visit a Web site, your computer will look at the HOSTS file to see where it's located. If it can't find it in the HOSTS file, it will then go to the Internet and ask your ISP's DNS server where it is. Since a HOSTS file is like a quick reference guide on Web sites for your computer, you can tell the HOSTS file which sites the Web browser should not be able to visit. If you have a list of every bad Web site, you could make a HOSTS file that wouldn't allow your computer to visit any of them. Pretty cool, huh?! Now, I'm sure some of you are saying, "That's great, but how do I get a list of all the bad Web sites in the whole world?" Well, I have the answer for you! There's an organization that keeps an up to date list of known malicious Web sites called MVPS. Not only do they keep the list updated, but they also put it into a custom HOSTS file for everyone to use. All you have to do is download it and replace your current HOSTS file with it. Here's how! First, download the file here. Save it to your desktop so that you can easily find it later. It'll be called hosts.zip. Next, right click on the file and choose Extract All. That's the easiest way. Note: If you use a different unzip utility, you're welcome to use that as well. Finally, install the file. If you're using Windows 98, 2000, ME or XP, just open the folder and double click on mvps.bat. If you're using Windows Vista, right click on mvps.bat and choose Run as Administrator. You should then see a screen that says the process is complete. Congratulations. You're done! Now, this was just a short introduction into HOSTS files. Would you like to make really nice buttons for your Web page? I'm always looking for easier ways to make buttons for my own Web page, so when I found this Web site, I couldn’t wait to share it with all of you! It's so easy to use too! All you have to do is pick the settings for your button, finish it, click on the Download button and then save it. There are many different settings to choose from and they're divided into three sections: Text, Size and Colors. Text – Here you can completely manipulate the text on the button. The default text for your button will read “Sample,” so to change that, just delete the text and type in your own on the form. Now, select the font you want to use, as well as, the font size. Next, align your text on the button. Choose right, left or center and then either top, middle or bottom. All that's left for this step is to check the boxes for bold, italic or underlined. Size – This section will determine the size of the button, whether your button will be round or square and whether or not it has a border. You’ll set the height and width first. The larger the number you put in, the bigger the dimension will get. The corner radius option sets the curve of the edges for your button, so if you want a round button, you’ll use that option. Should you want a square button, make sure you check the box for No Radius. Colors – This section is my favorite! This is where you’ll set all the colors for your button, as well as, what sort of fade the color will have on the button. To change the color of each option, you’ll need to click on the color box next to it. That will make a color box pop up for you to select the color you want. When you’ve found the color you want, click on the Save button and you’ll head back to the Colors option to change the other settings. The nice thing about the creation process is that with every change you make, your button changes right before your eyes so that you don’t have to wonder what it will look like. Once you have it the way you want it, click on the Download button beneath the button you created and then save it to your computer. This is an excellent Web design tool.
