Computer Tips [ Easy Way To Block Malicious Sites + Major Website Frustration Solved + Amazing Middle Mouse Button Trick ] 03/11/2009

Quick Tips

Middle Mouse Button Magic

So there I was, taking advantage of the precious few moments I get to spend at home these days; catching up on my e-mail, and using Firefox (3.0.6) to browse a few websites I consider daily staples. I found out awhile ago that if I created folders for all of my favorite bookmarked sites that I could access them without scrolling down through all the “in-betweeners” that I use every great once in awhile. This made my web browsing prep time a little more streamlined in that I could open a few tabs (Ctrl-T), rattle off some mouse clicks and be information bound in no time at all. Good stuff, or so I thought...

Well, last night I was going through my routine and I accidentally clicked the middle mouse button (the scroll wheel) over a folder containing my daily sites. Lo, and to my utter astonishment, the entire contents of the folder sprang to life in my browser window; each with it's own tab! I just shaved about a minute and a half off of my browsing preparation time! Thanks Firefox!

Okay, maybe I was a bit quick to put all my praise on Mozilla's browsing beastie. In truth, Internet Explorer is capable of the exact same thing. I just happen to like Firefox better! ;)

Give it a try! Just make sure you don't have a million bookmarks in the folder you click on. That may result in a little more than your browser (or PC) can handle!

Pleased to meet you all!!

Make Your Own Legal Wills, Living Wills, Heath Care Directive, Powers of Attorney, Final Arrangements, and More!

Retails For $50, Amazon Sells It For $34, Barns & Noble And Office Depot Both Sell It For $50!

Your Price - Just $12.97!!! WOW!!

OK, today's title is a little different than our normal fare - but something everyone really needs. It's called Quicken's Willmaker Plus 2008 and it's a great way to make sure your wishes are followed when the time comes. I know, no one wants to think about going to the information superhighway in the sky, but everyone's time does indeed come. We all have a responsibility to make sure our loved ones don't need to go through any more grief than necessary, and this software can really help.

We all know what happens. Getting a lawyer is sometimes way too expensive, so many people are left without any type of will when the inevitable time comes. This software not only covers standard wills, but also has extensive living will documentation. When I was only 30 years old, my wife and I had a will drawn up by a lawyer, and it was a solid $600 just for a basic "who-gets-what" type of will. I can tell you that THIS is the program we use now - so much simpler to update and work with than a lawyer! Besides, makes it easy to take Uncle Ed off your will when he messes up at the family reunion :-)

This software makes creating a legal, binding, will or living will simple and extremely affordable. It includes thousands of document possibilities to suit just about every situation -- but don't worry, it's incredibly user-friendly! You'll have them finished in minutes - really! It's basically a "fill in the blanks" proposition.

Making updates is a snap too. This program is so informative and in a language everyone can understand. It basically takes you through an interview process which makes it really simple to fill out your document. Plus, if you're not sure what any of it means, the software includes an amazing guide, informative glossary, and a host of online resources. It breaks down the legalese into something all of us can understand!

To help show easy it is, here's an example. Let's say you're filling out a "Final Arrangements" document. Before you even get started, it gives you a check list - name, body donation, organ donation, burial details, person to oversee plans. Then, the column to the right tells you the purpose of each of those items. Now you know what you need and why :-)

In addition to living and standard wills, this also includes Power of Attorney documents, a legal glossary if you get stuck, and other critical estate planning forms. Everything you need in one easy to use package!

Let's face it - proper planning is something we all need to take care of for our loved ones. I've personally had a will since I was 30 years old, and it gets updated on a regular basis. To me, it just doesn't make sense not to have everything in place - I can't imagine putting my family through that. Plus, this is from Quicken, so it's not just some off the wall software that some guy wrote in his basement - this is the real deal. Wouldn't surprise me even a little if this was the software lawyers used to create legal wills and documents for their clients!

Your price is fantastic - just $12.97 and US shipping is free. Again, this retails for $50 - and when you consider all it does it's is worth every penny of that price. If you've been putting off making a will or living will, just $12.97 can get you there.

PS - Estate planning is something we all have to do. It's not a task anyone enjoys, but at this price it's probably the least expensive way you'll ever see to get the job done. Isn't it worth $12.97 to know that your affairs will be in order when the time comes?

You've Never Seen Desktop Publishing Software Like This!

Don't Pay $700 For Adobe's InDesign!

Try This For Just $9.97!!!

Try It, You'll Be Shocked At What You Snagged For Less Than $10!

Professional Level Desktop Publishing Made Affordable!

Incredible Power At Your Fingertips!

I'm so excited! We've never offered anything quite like this one before! We have Page Designer Pro and it's some really amazing, professional-level desktop publishing software that's gonna absolutely blow you away! This makes PrintShop look like a toy! Check this out:

First off, this is a LOT like Adobe InDesign, just an amazing $690 LESS than what Adobe gets for their version! It's meant for - and does - pretty much the same thing - pro level design and print. You can literally create ANYTHING you can imagine with this software. This is truly a high-end desktop publishing solution and the power it brings is amazing. Talk about blown-away by what you can do with a computer and printer!!

Page Designer Pro

The first thing you'll notice when you start it up is your choice between a really handy wizard interface or the option to start a project from scratch. When you first start playing with it, just go ahead and take a look at what those wizards can do for you (over 2000 designs)! You'll be amazed at just how quickly you can create ads, brochures, business stationery, calendars, cards, letterheads, invoices, flyers, forms, newsletters, notices, handouts, event programs, posters, banners, price lists, reports, announcements, invitations, greeting cards and TONS more!

What that brings to the table with the amazing "wizards" is easily enough to justify this fantastic program, but that's only the beginning! After you're done checking out the wizards, go ahead and start a project from scratch - you're gonna be absolutely floored at how quickly you can produce professional level projects! This is the kind of software they use in professional print shops! Once you start messing around with it, you'll discover very soon you start to feel like a professional graphics artist!

As for features, this thing is the 800LB gorilla of desktop publishing! For example, just wait till you start playing with dozens and dozens of preset color schemes for your projects! Change the look and feel of your project in a mouse click! Great to use with the wizards to instantly change the look and feel of, well, ANY project!

Oh, and wait till you feast your mouse on the professional layout tools! Talk about a kid in a candy store! This has everything you need (and probably more)! We're talking intelligent text fitting (nice), kerning, hyphenation, drop caps, smart quotes, named styles, movable ruler and guides, precision placements, rotation, calendar tools, tables, brush / pencils, gradients, fills, shapes, all kind of text, frames and TONS more! I could fill the length of this review with JUST the tools at your disposal!

Page Designer Pro

PLUS, you've absolutly got to check out the Text Composition Tools - you'll love these things! Get this - you have all the following at your beck and call: Word count, spell checker, search & replace, a thesaurus, AutoCorrect, AutoSpell, over 300 new fonts, and - get this - a proofreader! That's right - you can have the program actually "read" your text and it can make suggestions for improvements! Now THAT'S cool!

Another feature you'll really love is the amazing "Text On A Path" tool! Here's how it works - You create a "path" using your mouse in any shape you want - a squiggly line, a square, a letter - whatever you can dream up. Then, double-click and start typing - your text will actually follow along the path you created, twisting and turning all along the way! Soooo cool!

You've gotta try the QuickShapes too! These aren't just the lousy shapes you drop into Word or something. These are basically intelligent clipart! Choose a shape, drag & drop it on your document, then adjust each angle and dimension using the little handles! Oh, and you can fill the shapes, do different "styles" , put in a gradient, add a photo, and MORE! The options are fantastic!

Oh, but the drawing fun isn't just limited to the QuickShapes! This has an amazing arsenal of drawing tools that you have to see to believe! You can sketch freehand, apply some really cool styles, make custom shapes, and create all kinds of eye-popping graphics in minutes! You could literally design your own clipart!

What if you have a photo you want to drop in? Yup, not only can you add any photo, you can even enhance it right in the program so it looks amazing in just a few mouse clicks! Once it's in the program, there's dozens and dozens of ways you can use it!

Page Designer Pro

Hey, have you ever needed to place a photo in with a bunch of text and couldn't get the text to "flow" right around it? Sometimes the text runs though your photos, sometimes the text gets blocked out, pushed around, or just ends up looking wrong. Well, this lets you easily reshape, rotate, and adjust your text frames to make your next project look like a magazine spread!

Heck, did I mention this can even create a website for you? Imagine the power above put into a web design program! It has all the tools you need to quickly and easily create professional looking webpages! Add text, graphics, animated gif, music, java - it can do it!

As if all that wasn't enough, this can also do mail merges, has some really cool transparency effects (so you can "see through" objects that are on top of other objects), mind-blowing versatility in printing, allows for outstanding PDF output, and even includes a PANTONE library if you're outputting your work for press publication! Told ya it was loaded!

BONUS!!! BOUNS!!! Can you believe this? It also includes a second CD with a whoppin' 100,000 graphics crammed onto it! Clip art, photos, it's all there and at your fingertips! This alone is worth the price of the software! With 100,000 images to choose from, you'll always be able to find the exact graphic you need for your projects!

Your cost for all this? Just $9.97 and US shipping is FREE! After using this for just a little bit, I can't believe we got these for this kind of price! Our supplier must be nuts!

It's really the best $9.97 you'll ever spend on desktop publishing! Honestly, if we were selling it for the $40 retail, it would STILL be well worth the price!  This is truly a professional level program that looks and works an awful lot like Adobe's $700 InDesign! If you want to do some serious desktop publishing, there's never been a cheaper way to get serious about it! $9.97!! Once you start using it, you'll agree that it's crazy for anyone to pass this by! You're not gonna believe what you get for less than $10!

You've gotta give this a try because for this kind of money you just can't afford to pass it by!!

PS - Bad news? Only a limited quantity of these are available, so you need to get to the site ASAP to grab your copy! You'll be completely blown away at how you can get software this powerful for $9.97!!!

Computers 101

Why do I have to scroll from left to right on many of the web sites I visit? Even with my browser maximized on my 17" monitor, I'm still scrolling! Any Ideas?

This could be the result of a couple problems. The most likely problem is that your screen resolution is set too low. It's probably at 800x600 and most sites are designed with the assumption you're using a resolution of 1024x768 (the current standard).

To check, change your monitor resolution in Windows XP. Right-click your desktop and select Properties. Next, click the Settings tab. You'll see a little slider gizmo that goes left to right. Make sure it's set to 1024x768 or higher (the higher you go, the smaller an item will appear on your screen, so don't go too far).

If you're using Windows Vista, right click on your desktop and click Personalize. All the way at the bottom you'll see Display Settings. Same results; just different path to get there!
Here's a sample shot (note that my resolution is set really high—this is because the wide screen LCD on my system looks best at that particular resolution. Most regular monitors wouldn't look that hot or wouldn't be able to display 1440x 900, so don't feel that you have to set yours to match mine).

Click OK. You may need to re-start your system.

The other possibility is that the site you're looking at is poorly designed. Most sites are designed for an 1024x768 resolution and are set at 900 pixels wide to allow for the sides of the browser window.

Hope that helps!

MS Office

The Super-Quick Word 2007 Table
I'm sure that most of you have discovered the new features of MS Word 2007 that make the creation of beautiful tables a snap, but what if you were hoping for something even faster?

I mean you still have to insert the table, format any coloring, header rows, row height, etc…Wouldn't it be nice to start with a table that's a little closer to the finished product?Yeah, I thought it was a good idea too. So, are you ready to see your options?
Besides placing your cursor at the location where you want to insert your table you need to go to the Insert tab of the Ribbon.

On the Insert tab you need the Table button.

It's at this point that we're looking for something different. Instead of choosing a table size to insert, go all the way to the bottom and choose Quick Tables.
A display of built in Quick Tables will open allowing you to choose what would be suit your needs.

Once you choose something it's inserted into the document and ready for editing. More than likely, you'll still want to make more changes to its appearance, and obviously their dummy data will have to be replaced, but it seems to me that you might find yourself finishing the job just a bit faster with this little head start.

More Cool Stuff

WOW! Make Your Computer Run Like New (Maybe BETTER)!

Amazing Software Makes Windows Run Up To 300% Faster!

It's The Absolute BEST $8.97 You'll Ever Spend On Your PC!

You're Computer Will Be Smokin' Fast!

Customize, Tweak, Secure, Optimize, And Make 'Er FLY!!

OK, these are STILL going like crazy! Thank YOU to the 1000+ who have ordered! If you don't have it yet, you;re missing out big time! Just wait till you check out this mind-blowing deal on System Mechanic 7

It's by far, the very best program I've ever seen for getting the most out of Windows! You'll be blown away at what this does to your PC - You'll think you got a new computer! I tell ya, personally, I think this is just outstanding! I've seen a ton of software, but the improvements this makes is really nothing short of amazing! It optimizes Windows to be the way it SHOULD have been when you purchased it! Read on - and get ready to be really - and I mean REALLY- impressed!

First, I'm seriously impressed at just how easy this software makes it to really get your computer crankin'! I mean, I don't think there's anything on your computer this can't tweak and optimize!

To test, I installed it on my personal machine and it did a quick scan, and then it scared the poop outta me! it came up with a serious warning about a few security problems and gave mesome really helpful speed improvement suggestions. Now here's the cool part - With just a couple mouse clicks, I'm now enjoying a MUCH faster -and much more secure - computer! And I honestly thought I was as tweaked out as I could be! Not even close - this was incredible - and all automatic!

What can it do for you? Let's talk speed - this takes your slow PC and turns it into a Ferrari - you'll think your computer is new again (maybe better than new)! It'll be just flying through programs and impressing the livin' daylights out of ya! This has a whopping 19 different waysto crank up the speed on your machine! In fact, many systems see an absolutely incredible 300% improvement after just some automatic adjusting by this program! WOW - that's worth $8.97 in anyone's book!

Want to surf the internet at up to 300% faster? Oh, man, this can help! Windows isn't necessarily optimized for the fastest connection out of the box, but this program can grab your settings and squeeze out the speed - you'll surf the internet like crazy! Who wouldn't want to surf up to 300% faster?!!? Heck, it even has a speed tool to measure how faster you connection speed is! Just fantastic!

Want more? - Sure ya do! Another thing this does that I'm in absolute love with is it lets youcustomize over 100 "secret" Windows settings! Stuff that you always wish Windows would let you adjust but there isn't really any direct way to do it. This makes it point-and-click easy!! You can:Optimize the way Windows' Start Menu behaves, speed up networking performance, log in automatically, edit your computer registration data, change multimedia behavior, improve pagefile security, customize explorer's context menus, edit advanced administration options, and much more!!

Oh, and just wait till you point your mouse at the Automatic System Maintenance section! I just love this! This part of the program will watch in the background and wait till the system is idle. As soon as you're not using the computer, it will work in the background tuning your computer for absolute peak performance! Here's the really cool part - just touch your mouse, and it stops what it's doing and gives the system back to you! Really! If you've ever been slowed down by a stubborn anti-virus that insisted on scanning while you were working, you know just how cool this is! Oh, and it even lets you pick and choose what optimizations to run!

Another automatic feature I think is just brilliant is the "One-Click" option! It's just what it sounds like - just click the button and System Mechanic runs all of its system enhancement programs andcranks your system up to the next level! Just a button push away! It makes it easy for EVERYONE to have a smokin' system!

Of course, no utility suite would be complete without some killer security tools - and this has the best! This program will quickly scan your system and help you find all the holes - then just plug them with a mouse click! I was really surprised when it found not one, not two, but THREE major holes on my personal PC! I clicked the mouse and the world was safe again!

Oh, and that's not all! This also includes both a world-class Anti-Virus (one of the easiest, most comprehensive AVs I've ever used) and a really top-notch Firewall! Either one retails for more than we're selling the entire suite for! WOW!

PLUS - it destroys spyware, adware, malware and more. OK, put it this way - if it was made to attack your system, this is going to seek it out and destroy it like a battalion of ticked off Marines!

OK, all that's great, but what if your PC is really messed up - like it won't boot? This software can handle that too! Just pop in a recovery CD and System Mechanic will examine your system and get your computer running right again! If you've ever had that sick "why isn't my computer booting" feeling, you can appreciate how great this will be next time it happens!

One more thing and I'll try to stop! System Mechanic is just fanatical about grabbing up wasted space on your hard drive! This just blew me away when it found a whopping 1.5 GIG of wasted hard drive space! Geeze - I've had whole hard drives that were smaller than that! This made grabbing that space back a mouse click away! I tell ya - you just can't go wrong here!

OK - can ya tell I'm impressed? There's actually a LOT more this can do, but I don't want to write a book on it (OK, maybe I've already come close)! I'm currently running this software and couldn't be happier with it. My system is definitely faster than before it was installed and I just love the performance increase! If you only buy one software program this year - GRAB THIS!

Your price? Get this - just $8.97 and US shipping is FREE! AND - this is a 3 license pack too! WOW!!! We've never had it this cheap!!! When you think of all this can do, for $8.97, it's the biggest no-brainer in software history! Check it out:

PS - Seriously, after just using this for a short time, I wouldn't be without it. If WorldStart wasn't carrying it, I'd happily pay the $70 for it somewhere else - it really is that good! PLEASE - take a look at this one, I've NEVER seen a better, more complete utility program! Blows everything else right out of the water!!

PS - The price will increase to $18.97 very soon (probably like, tomorrow)!

Oh, do you have a laptop? Ever hook it up to a regular keyboard and mouse? What about a flash drive? An external HD? An MP3 player? Want to make it easier? Just get this hub and plug your accessories into it - Your mouse, keyboard, and whatever else. Tip of the Day

Firefox Smart Keywords

If you have made the switch from Internet Explorer to Firefox (which many people have), there is a quick way for you to reach the Web sites you would like to visit.

Firefox uses something called smart keywords and they are just special words that replace a bookmarked URL (a Web address). If you would like to give it a try, open up your Firefox browser and hit Ctrl + L. That will put the focus on the address bar, so you can start typing in your keywords.

Firefox has a few predefined smart keywords such as Google (which opens up a Google search), dict (for a dictionary), wiki (for Wikipedia, the popular info site) and slang (which opens up an urban slang dictionary). These are all keywords that will work automatically for you if you use the smart keyword feature.

Let's give it a try. Go to Firefox and hit Ctrl + L, then type google in the address bar. The Google search Web site will open automatically for you. You can try that with all of the other examples I gave above!

Today's Feature

Using HOSTS to Block Malicious Web Sites

I was looking through our computer tips archive the other day and found an article about computer HOSTS files. The article explains exactly what a HOSTS file is and how it can be used to block malicious Web sites. At the very end of the article, there's a short paragraph about how you can download a custom HOSTS file that will automatically block many of the known malicious Web sites on the Web today.

As I was reading it, I decided the last paragraph of the article should probably be explained a little better. So, here we go!

HOSTS files are on every computer. They contain a list of Web sites and the location of those sites. In a nut shell, when you visit a Web site, your computer will look at the HOSTS file to see where it's located. If it can't find it in the HOSTS file, it will then go to the Internet and ask your ISP's DNS server where it is.

Since a HOSTS file is like a quick reference guide on Web sites for your computer, you can tell the HOSTS file which sites the Web browser should not be able to visit. If you have a list of every bad Web site, you could make a HOSTS file that wouldn't allow your computer to visit any of them. Pretty cool, huh?!

Now, I'm sure some of you are saying, "That's great, but how do I get a list of all the bad Web sites in the whole world?" Well, I have the answer for you! There's an organization that keeps an up to date list of known malicious Web sites called MVPS. Not only do they keep the list updated, but they also put it into a custom HOSTS file for everyone to use. All you have to do is download it and replace your current HOSTS file with it. Here's how!

First, download the file here. Save it to your desktop so that you can easily find it later. It'll be called hosts.zip.

Next, right click on the file and choose Extract All. That's the easiest way. Note: If you use a different unzip utility, you're welcome to use that as well.

Finally, install the file. If you're using Windows 98, 2000, ME or XP, just open the folder and double click on mvps.bat. If you're using Windows Vista, right click on mvps.bat and choose Run as Administrator. You should then see a screen that says the process is complete.

Congratulations. You're done!

Now, this was just a short introduction into HOSTS files. If you want to learn more about what you just did (or are about to do), check out the MVPS Web site. Until next time, stay safe out there, my friends!

The Button Effect

Would you like to make really nice buttons for your Web page? I'm always looking for easier ways to make buttons for my own Web page, so when I found this Web site, I couldn’t wait to share it with all of you!

It's so easy to use too! All you have to do is pick the settings for your button, finish it, click on the Download button and then save it.

There are many different settings to choose from and they're divided into three sections: Text, Size and Colors.

Text – Here you can completely manipulate the text on the button. The default text for your button will read “Sample,” so to change that, just delete the text and type in your own on the form. Now, select the font you want to use, as well as, the font size. Next, align your text on the button. Choose right, left or center and then either top, middle or bottom. All that's left for this step is to check the boxes for bold, italic or underlined.

Size – This section will determine the size of the button, whether your button will be round or square and whether or not it has a border. You’ll set the height and width first. The larger the number you put in, the bigger the dimension will get. The corner radius option sets the curve of the edges for your button, so if you want a round button, you’ll use that option. Should you want a square button, make sure you check the box for No Radius.

Colors – This section is my favorite! This is where you’ll set all the colors for your button, as well as, what sort of fade the color will have on the button. To change the color of each option, you’ll need to click on the color box next to it. That will make a color box pop up for you to select the color you want. When you’ve found the color you want, click on the Save button and you’ll head back to the Colors option to change the other settings.

The nice thing about the creation process is that with every change you make, your button changes right before your eyes so that you don’t have to wonder what it will look like. Once you have it the way you want it, click on the Download button beneath the button you created and then save it to your computer.

This is an excellent Web design tool. I hope you’ll bookmark it for future use!

February Wallpaper

Here's February's wallpaper. It's all free, so enjoy!

Snowy Deer

This girl was in a group I managed to slip into. It was snowing pretty good and she was curious about me and got within eight feet for this close-up! If this isn't a February shot, I don't know what is!

I shot this just last month in the Valley of Fire State Park, just about an hour from Las Vegas. We were going to another spot just down the road, but couldn't resist stopping for this shot. Timing on one like this is really tough, so dumb luck came to my rescue.

Summer Stream

Here's one that's a little different. It was shot in the Smokies last summer, but instead of giving you the straight shot, I added a soft-focus/dreamy effect to it. I hope you enjoy it!
