Quick Tips

Hide your Mouse Pointer

Does your mouse pointer get in the way while you're typing? Wish there was a way to just make it go away, then pop back up after the deluge of keystrokes subsides? Well, I have just the solution, my friends!

For Windows XP:

Click Start>Settings>Control Panel and then double click Mouse.

In the Mouse Properties window, click on the Pointer Options tab and you will see a check box that says "Hide Pointer While Typing". Click the checkmark in that box and click Apply, then OK. You're all set!

For Windows Vista:

Much the same operation here. Click Start>Control Panel>Mouse>Pointer Options, The same checkbox is present so put a check in it click Apply and then OK.

Let's hear it for unobtrusive mouse pointers!

Black 2GB USB Clip MP3 Player

You're just gonna LOVE this one! We just got an absolutely outstanding deal on a small batch of 2GB MP3 Players! Just wait till you feast your eyes on the price - you're not gonna believe it's possible to go that low!

For now, let's have a look at this bad boy! First thing is: WOW - this guy is tiny! Just look at the photo - it fits on your finger with room to spare! It's so little it has to shop in the petite section at the MP3 mall :-) And it's light - like a feather light! When it arrives at your door and you open the package, you're going to be amazed! Best thing is when you go out walking, running or just generally using it, you'll hardly know it's there!

It may be small on size, but it's MAMMOTH on memory! This tiny little player can hold an astonishing 500 typical MP3 songs! That's a TON of music! Think of it this way - If you filled it up and hit Play at noon on Wednesday, you wouldn't run out of songs till Thursday at 1:00PM!! 25 Hours Of Music! WOW!!

Know what you're really gonna love about this? The clip-on part! I know, sounds funny, but the fact you can clip this on a jacket, pocket, bag - whatever - and hardly even know it's there is wonderful! Take it for walks, jogs, bicycling, roller blading, to the gym, to the park, out shopping - whatever - and it really and truly stays clipped on and out of the way! After all, if you can't manage it while you're using it, what's the point of having it?

Using it is really simple too! Here's the how ya do it:

1. Plug it into your computer and it will show up as an external drive under My Computer.

2. Drag and drop your MP3s to it (See below on how to get MP3s).

3. Hit play and enjoy!

How's that for easy? You'll be amazed at how effortless this is to use! (And if you have any problems with it, just contact our tech support :-)

Oh, and everyone worries about getting MP3s when they first get a player like this. No need to fret - It's soooo easy! You can use Windows Media Player to convert your CDs to MP3s, you can buy MP3s all over online (walmart has some great prices), then just drag & drop to your new player!

Almost forgot the most important part! YES - these sound incredible! Easily as good an an iPod! Your ears are gonna LOVE the ridiculously amazing sound treat they're in for!

Comes with everything you need too - a wall charger, earbuds, and USB cable!

Oh, and did I mention that you can also store regular files of ANY kind on this if you want? That's right - it can double as a flash drive!

Black 2GB USB Clip MP3 Player

Cool thing about these is, once you start using an MP3 player like this, you'll discover it's absolutely fantastic to have all your favorite music in one place! Mine is hooked up to a stereo on my desk, then when I go out I plug into my car radio, then I listen while I hike with my dog over in the park! It's fantastic!

OK, now the price. The closest thing to this is Apple's iPod Shuffle - and that costs a whopping $70 for a 2GB unit!

Your price for this little guy? Ready? Set? Here ya go - just $21.97 and US shipping is FREE! Is that mind-blowing or what? Why pay 4X, 5X, or even 6X as much? Give this a try - not only are you going to absolutely LOVE it, you'll be wearing a big 'ol grin knowing how much money you saved!

Whatever You Do - Don't Buy An External Hard Drive!

Make One Yourself And Save BIG!

Super Easy! Anyone Can Do It!

Great Way To Give Your Old Hard Drives A Reason To Live!

SimpleDrive 3.5 I'm so excited! We just got a jaw-droppin' deal on some do-it-yourself External Hard Drive Cases! I've used these in the past (a lot, actually), and I've saved literally HUNDREDS over buying the "prefab" deals at the stores! Super easy too - my 7 year old can do it!

OK, so how's this work anyway? Glad you asked! Really easy - we sell you this great little case, you take an internal Hard Drive (IDE connection) and just plug it in. Put the case back together (a few screws - not hard), then plug it in! That's it! When you plug it into your computer's USB port windows will AUTOMATICALLY install the drive and list it under MyComputer! It's just like plugging in a GIANT flashdrive! It's THAT easy!

From there, just use it like any other drive! It's an absolutely fantastic idea for extra storage or backups!

PLUS, like I say, this can save a TON on money! There are two ways to do this - The first is to watch for a sale on internal Hard Drives at your local electronics store. You can get HUGE drives for less than $100 all day long! I've seen them for less than $40 after rebates and such! You get them for WAY less than external drives since you're not buying some snazzy case.

The second way these save money is letting you give new life to old hard drives! You know how it is - you have that old computer sitting in your closet - there's nothing on it you need anymore, it's really not worth anything, but you're worried about throwing it away. Why not salvage it's old HD and stick it into this handy case? You instantly have an external HD - for less than $20!

Now, I know you may be a little worried about having to assemble something like this, but trust me, it's easy. If you've ever used a screwdriver and plugged a lamp into the wall, you're qualified! You simply take any IDE drive up to 750GB, in plug the power cord (inside the case), then just push it into place! A few screws later and the case is assembled! I put mine together in less than 5 minutes! Really! Still not sure? I'll make you a deal - if you can't figure it out, you can call out tech support and they'll walk you though it!

OK, ready for the deal? We have these on sale today for just $18.97 and US shipping is FREE! This can save you TONS of money on external drives! Easy to do, cheap, and quick! Grab one, grab a dozen - for this kind of money you just can't go wrong!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4993

PS - It's never been easier - or cheaper - to make your own external HD! PLUS - if down the road you decide the drive you started with is too small, you can always just take this apart and "upgrade" it yourself in a few minutes! Don't miss out!

Back By Popular Demand! We've sold over 600 of these in the last week or two, and the orders just won't stop! Thank YOU to everyone who grabbed one (or in many cases, two or three)! You'll love it! If you've been missing out, I put them on sale again for you today! Get 'em while you can!

Awesome! Turn 1 USB Port Into 4!JustCom USB 2.0 4-Port Hub

Brilliant "Stand Up" Design Keeps Wires More Organized!

Stop Crawling Around On The Floor!

Set This On Your Desk And Always Have A Place To Plug In!

Jaw-Droppin', Mind-Blowin' Deal Too!

Special Price - Today ONLY!

Know what you can never have enough of? USB ports! You know how it is - everything you want to plug into your computer requires what? A USB port! It's really easy to run out of those little buggers, ya know? Well, that's where this amazing idea comes in!

We have these really cool, really new 4 Port USB 2.0 Hubs that magically turn 1 USB port into 4! David Copperfiled doesn't have anything on these babies!

Oh, and look at these - instead of laying down on their side like some kind of lazy hub, they stand up! Why didn't I think of that? What a brilliant idea! Just wait till you try it! The ingenious design makes surprisingly easy to plug in (and yank out) your USB cords! I tried one out at home and was pleasantly surprised at how much more organized all the cords stay - no more rat's nest!

Know what else is really great about these? They sit right on your desk so no more crawling around on the floor playing contortionist while you're trying to plug a USB cord into the back of your computer! Yeah, you know the game - you wiggle around on the floor, pull one USB plug, replace it with your new gadget, then get back to your computer, then figure out that you accidently unplugged your mouse, you go back under, unplug your new gadget, plug your mouse back in, unplug something else, plug your gadget back in - isn't enough, enough? Stick this hub on your desk and stay off that floor!

TIP ALERT!! TIP ALERT!!

Oh, do you have a laptop? Ever hook it up to a regular keyboard and mouse? What about a flash drive? An external HD? An MP3 player? Want to make it easier? Just get this hub and plug your accessories into it - Your mouse, keyboard, and whatever else. Now, next time you need to use your laptop, instead of playing musical USB ports with your accessories, just plug this 4 Port USB hub into your laptop! A single plug and you have up to 4 accessories running!

Your price? You'll love this - we have these for just $8.97 and US shipping is FREE! For that kind of money, you'd be nuts to miss out! You know you'll need one of these down the road - why pay $30 for some lame hub from a big box store later? Get this now - you'll love it!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4905

PS - The price WILL increase to $14.97 tomorrow! <Switches to Arnold Schwarzenegger voice> Don't wait - order now! Do It Now! :-)

XP and Vista Uptime

If you leave your computer running 24/7 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week), you might be interested in determining the amount of uptime that has accumulated since your last reboot. Luckily, it's very easy to find that information in both Windows XP and Vista. Let's take a look!

Tracking Uptime in Vista

To find Vista’s uptime, right click on your taskbar and select Task Manager.

Now, with the Task Manager open, click on the Performance tab and you'll see the amount of uptime listed under the System section.

Tracking Uptime in XP (Professional edition only)

To find the uptime in XP, go to Start, Run, type in "cmd" and then click OK.

That will bring up a command prompt. Type in “systeminfo” (without the quotes) and then hit Enter. It will take a few minutes for the analysis to complete and get your results, but when it's finished, you'll see your uptime listed in days, hours, minutes and seconds.

Find your uptime today!

MS Office

Two in One

Ever find yourself faced with multiple sets of data in MS Excel?

Did you decide that you wanted them charted together and yet with different types of data representation?

For example, maybe you'd like to see one set of data in a line graph and the other with bars?

If this is your preference then you might be happily surprised to find that you can accomplish this goal - to have a multi-type chart - with just a couple of clicks beyond the creation of your original, single-type chart.

  • To begin you need to create a chart with both sets of data as usual.

(Yes I know, that creates the chart with both sets in the same graphic form but we're about to change that.)

  • To change the chart type for only one set of data you must click on one data series in the chart (the actual bars, etc…).
  • With the one data series still selected you need to choose a different chart type from the chart toolbar (or Ribbon).

These steps should change this:

into something like this:

Voila! Two chart types in one.

WOW!! Can't Go Wrong For $6.97! Lowest Price EVER!

Deal Is ONLY Good Today, 03-25-2009!

JUST STOP RIGHT THERE!

The Shocking Truth About Your Hard Drive!

Don't Throw Out That Old Hard Drive!!

Don't Give Away Your Old Computer!

You Gotta Read This - It'll Scare The Heck Outta Ya!

News Flash!

Recent studies show that 74% of hard drives sold, given away, or thrown out (in the computer or out) contain data that can be easily read and recovered - and 36% of those hard drives had even been reformatted. You absolutely, positively, have to permanently get that data off of there!!

Do you have an old computer you're thinking about giving away? Maybe an old hard drive that needs to be thrown out? Well, if you do, you MUST GET THAT DATA OFF THERE!!!!

Well, we have some really easy to use software that will keep you safe called DriveScrubber. Just pop the CD into your computer (or make a floppy if you still have a drive for one of those) and reboot. Even if you can't boot to Windows, you can still erase that drive with this software!

Think about it - you wouldn't toss paperwork with credit card, bank, or social security numbers in the trash without shredding the heck out of 'em would you? Of course not! However, day in and day out, people toss out old computers and think that just deleting or formatting a drive is going to get rid of all the personal info they had on it - not a chance!

WARNING - When you delete a file, it's not really gone. You might want to read that last sentence again because it's really important. The area where the file lives on your hard drive simply gets tagged as free space, but until it's overwritten, that data is VERY recoverable. I formatted a test drive and ran recovery software on it awhile ago just to see what would happen. Nearly EVERYTHING was easily recoverable! No problem at all!

If you've ever used your computer to check on your banking, buy a product online, or anything that involves your personal info, then that info might be easily available when you get rid of your old hardware! Yikes!

Don't think it can happen to you? Well, two MIT students did a study. They went and purchased 158 used hard drives for less than $1000 from a web swap-meet type site. When they went through the drives, they found over 5,000 credit card numbers, medical reports, lots of personal and corporate financial information, and gigs of personal e-mail. And get this - 60% of the drives had been formatted!!!

There are people who look for old computers at the curb or in the dumpster just to pull info off the hard drive or sell the drives to others! Plus, if you just "donate" an old computer you have no idea what really is going to happen to it! If this doesn't scare the heck out of you, then you shouldn't be using a computer!

Once you insert the Drive Scrubber disk, your computer will boot to the CD or the floppy, and has an easy to use interface that makes wiping a drive a snap. Just select the drive and select the "erase" button. ALL the info on the drive will be gone - permanently and forever! You can still reformat the drive and install Windows again once this is done - but any info you had on the drive will be completely gone. No worries about anyone ever using your hard drive or old computer to steal you personal info! It's great!

I personally have a couple of old hard drives sitting around that I just didn't want to throw out. Now I'll be able to completely erase them and toss them into the trash knowing that no one will EVER be able to recover any of my personal data from that drive.

Your cost for all this protection? Just $6.97 and US shipping is FREE! Sure, it's not a program that you'll use every day, but everyone with a computer WILL need to use it someday! For this kind of money, it's insane not to be safe. Check it out:

Online Sudoku

In 2005, the game Sudoku became an international craze. My mom is even hooked on playing it. What is it? Well, it is a game you can solve by using logic. “The objective is to fill a 9x9 grid so that each column, each row and each of the nine 3x3 boxes contains the digits from 1 to 9. Sound interesting? Tip of the Day

What is DVI?

Those flat screen LCD monitors are showing up on desks everywhere. They save space, have sharper image quality, and look utterly modern, too.

The old CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitor is an analog device. That means that your graphics card must convert the computer's digital signal into a signal that the CRT monitor can understand. Of course, there's always something lost in the process.

The LCD monitor is a digital device. If you use the DVI connection there'll be no loss of image quality or signal corruption. That is why you get a crisper image.

Here's the snag: if your graphics card doesn't have a DVI connector then you're stuck using the old VGA connection. Your LCD monitor should have a VGA connector as well, but keep in mind that you'll be getting an analog signal so it won't be as clean as purely digital. It may be worth your while to get a new graphics card with either DVI-D (digital only) or DVI-I (digital or analog with adapter) connectors so you can get the most out of your LCD monitor.

Today's Feature

Windows SteadyState part 2

Last week, I started telling you about a program called Windows SteadyState. If you missed part one, feel free to check it out here. Last weeks article talked about the Global Computer Setting of SteadyState. Today, I am going to talk about some of the user settings for this awesome program!

First, what you will need to do is launch Steadystate and click on a user on the right hand column. (You can download Steadystate here if you dont have it :-)

windows steadystate screenshot

The picture above shows you where to click. My user that I am working on today is called gary2. If you don't have a user available in the box, click the "add a new user" button.

After you click on the user, you will be shown the user options screen. Here is what it looks like:

steadystate screen shot 2

Since we are already here, I will start by telling you about the options in the General tab. These are just a few simple options for this user. You can lock this users profile so they cannot make changes to the system. This comes in handy if you want to let someone use your computer, but they are not a regular user of the computer. They can use it all they want, but none of their changes will stick after they leave.

The second portion is session timers. This area allows you to set time restrictions on the user. Great for kids that are only allowed limited time on the computer!

Now we can get into the fun stuff! Go ahead and click on the Windows Restrictions tab on the top of the screen.

steadystate screen shot 3

This area of Steadystate is one of the most powerful. As you can see from the picture, there are dozens of options and restrictions that can be set in this area. I can't cover all of them, but I will go over some of the most important ones. The first is "Prevent right-click in the start menu". A user can cause all kinds of trouble if they have the ability to modify their start menu options. Checking this box will make it so they cant right-click on start and choose "properties". The next one that is important is "remove the control panel icon". I think it is pretty obvious how much help this can be. If a user can't get to the control panel, they can't change the settings! A third box that you might want to check is "remove the run icon". Taking away the ability to click on "run" will stop users from running applications and utilities from the command line. There are just tons of options in here! Some others include: "Prevent users from using the command prompt", "Prevent access to the registry editor" and "Remove CD burning features".

Underneath the restrictions area, you will see the "Hide drives" box. If you have a drive that you don't want this user to see, just check the box. They will no longer have the ability to see it!

Ok, that's enough for today. We will wrap this up next week where we will cover the Feature Restrictions and Block Programs tabs.

Until next time, stay safe out there.

~Gary

Amanda's Coolsite

Bagheera

Welcome to Bagheera, a site devoted to endangered species. Endangered species have always had a spot in my heart ever since I was a little girl when my dad first started teaching me about them. Both now and then, I have found the idea of animals disappearing off the face of the Earth forever incredibly sad.

This site is easy to navigate with four main sections: In the Wild, In the Class, Resources and News. There is also a featured section in the middle of the page where you will find: Tigers in Crisis, Imagine Animals, Endangered TV and Rock Earth.

In the Wild - This section is where you can get information about the animals that are rapidly vanishing from the Earth. Select an animal from the drop down list to learn about it.

In the Class - Here you will find teaching resources to teach about endangered animals in the classroom. The information ranges from classroom activities to suggested reading and there is even a glossary of terms.

Resources - This is a listing of Endangered Animals resources. It has links to other sites where you can learn more about the species that are endangered and even check out the 2006 List of Endangered Species.

News - Here you can check out news articles from all over the world that relate to endangered species.

The Features section takes you to featured sites. It opens in another window so that you don’t lose the Bagheera site.

Tigers in Crisis - This site is devoted to endangered tigers. I learned a lot about tigers, as well as, their critical endangerment here. Did you know there are five different types of tigers? Or that there are three types of tigers have already been driven into extinction? I sure didn’t have a clue.

Imagine Animals - Here you can not only learn about endangered animals, you can see images of them as well. Just choose an endangered animal from the drop down box and you’ll learn all about it. You’ll find pictures along the top of the page for that animal’s section as well.

Endangered Earth - This looks like the main page for all of these other pages. Oops! Well, that’s okay. There is still a lot of cool stuff here. You can read the About section and learn why these sites exist. You can also check out the Tour section and see endangered animals by country. The Journal section lets you read the journals for the different sites too.

I found this site to be an eye opening and educational experience. At the very least, I learned a lot about animals that I never knew. Check it out!

Price? Oh, you're not gonna believe this one - we're talking just $12.97 and US shipping is FREE! Yeah, really - $12.97! A good LED flashlight can easily go for a heck of a lot more ($30, $50, even over $100!), so it's crazy not to grab yourself a light or two! If you don't love it, send it back within 60 days for a refund -nothin' to lose!

Monthly Wallpaper

Yellowstone Rainbow

This was taken in my favorite park right as a storm blew past. I was driving along and couldn't believe the intensity of the light and this rainbow.

Yellow Flower

This was last spring in the Smoky Mtns. The light was soft and just right,so I spent an hour or so shooting flowers just like this one.

Antelope Canyon Light Beam

This is from the famous Antelope Slot Canyon in AZ. In summer, these fantastic light beams shine down from above, and I loved the look of this one.
