MS-DOS Prompt in XP and Vista

Older versions of Windows had the MS-DOS prompt conveniently located in the programs file. For some reason, Windows 2000, XP and Vista buried it in Accessories and renamed it "Command Prompt". How do we get there from here?

Simple!

To get a DOS prompt in Windows 2000, XP or Vista, you can go the long way... Start>Programs>Accessories, and select " Command Prompt ", or you can simply go to Start , Run , type in "CMD" and click OK . Vista is just the same: Go to the search bar and type in CMD.

There you have it, your long lost friend waiting for your command, and although there aren't many programs that use it these days, it's nice to know it still exists!

Amazing Portable Photo HardDrive!

Never Run Out Of Memory Cards Again!

Incredible Price Too!!!!SmartDisk PhotoBank 40GB Photo Bank/Card Reader

You Just Gotta Check This Out...

WOW!!! I'm so excited! We just got in the coolest accessory for digital photographers! It's an awesome portable 40Gig hard drive that you can use (without a computer) to backup your memory cards! I already have one and just love it!!! Check this out:

How's it work? Glad you asked! It's so easy - just pop your memory card into the drive and hit Copy!! All the data on your memory card will be copied over to this mini hard drive! Every file, every folder - it's all there.

Can you imagine how cool this would be? If you've ever run out of space on a memory card (and who hasn't) this would have been incredibly handy! You could have just copied the info over to this little drive, cleared the card, and started shooting again! The unit even has a log to verify to you that the photos copied successfully!!

I used to lug a laptop along if I thought I'd run out of memory cards, but I found that it was waaaayyyy to hard to take along in the field. So, I'd end up out of memory, and have to hike back to the car, boot up the stupid laptop, wait for windows to load, attach my card reader, copy the files (and it would take forever), clear the card, shut down the laptop, put everything away, and hike back to where I was - what a pain!! Well, this little unit is no bigger than an ipod, weighs less than a pound, and it couldn't be easier to take along! And, frankly, it's way quicker to use than a laptop - Just pop in your card and copy! When I finish a card, I just pop it in and set the unit into my backpack and let it do it's thing while I keep shooting! Cool huh?

This has been part of the equipment I carry whenever I have my camera with me for the last several months now (we had a sample come in, but until now, there weren't enough to sell). I can say without any reservation that I absolutely love it - it makes it so easy to quickly backup a card so I can clear it and use it for more photos.

Plus, it works with pretty much EVERY card out there too! Secure DIgital (SD), Compact Flash, Mini SD, MS-Pro, MMC, Memory Stick - and more!

SmartDisk PhotoBank 40GB Photo Bank/Card Reader Another other really cool thing I like to do is if I'm not filling up all my cards, I'll use it to backup my photos during a shoot. There's many a time I've spent a LOT of money (and time) getting to a location and I want to make 100% sure I have a copy of what's on my memory cards. It's just too easy to lose or damage one of those little memory cards. If you've ever lost irreplaceable photos from a vacation, wedding, or special event, you know how important backups are!

What about getting the images from the drive to your computer? Nothin' to it! Just plug it into your USB port with the included cord and it will show up as a drive under My Computer. From there, just drag and drop to wherever you keep your photos on your computer. Oh, and if you use a photo program to manage your images, just point it to this drive and have it import from there. Easy!

Whew - that's about it. This is one accessory every digital photographer should have - period. After all, we've all run out of memory at one time or another and if you're on vacation or at an important event, this drive could really save the day! Again, this is a 40 Gig unit, so most people could put a year or two worth of photos on it! I don't know how I could be without one of these at this point - I really use the heck out of mine!

Your price - oh, you'll love this - just $58.97 and US shipping is FREE! When you consider this is a whopping 40Gig unit, that's really a steal. Grab one today!

Amazing 8GB Micro-Hard Drive!

Take All Your Stuff With You!

Way Cheaper Than A Flash Drive -

And Better Lookin' Too!Verbatim Store-n-Go 8GB USB 2.0 Mini HD

You've Just Gotta Try This!

These are just the coolest little hard drives we've ever come across! Not only are they about as good lookin' as a hard drive can get, but they are really tiny too! Just wait till you see yours :-) You're gonna LOVE 'em!

This works just like a flash drive - only it doesn't set you back as much money! Just plug it into your computer and it will show up as an external drive under My Computer. From there, simply drag and drop your files! Works on any XP or Vista computer - no drivers required! WOW!

Why not free up extra room on your computer's Hard Drive? Yeah...instead of jamming EVERYTHING onto the computer (you know...the one you never seem to get around to backing up!), why not keep all your favorite music, photos and other important stuff in one nice, convenient spot? Plus that way, you've got everything together when you want to show uncle Bob all the latest photos from your last vacation?

Oh, and these are FANTASTIC for backups too! You probably have loads of documents, information, spreadsheets, family photos, and music that you just can't afford to lose - Why not back 'em up onto a couple of these handy little drives? Makes it MUCH easier to keep track of and for the price you just can't go wrong!

Or if you've got SOOO many tunes you just "can't live without" and you're juggling three or four thumb drives- well STOP IT!!! (Besides, you're bound to loose one of 'em, poke an eye out or do something else that every mother in the world seems to warn their kids about doing!) Do the smart thing and keep them all together and neat all in one place! (Besides, your mother will be so proud!)

Anyway, in addition to the HUGE amount of capacity, this mini-HD is FAST! (USB 2.0 with data transfer speeds up to 480 Mbps!) So when "Uncle Bob" says he just has to have copies of those pictures, BAM! plug right into that USB port and you're done!!! Oh, and this comes pre-loaded with Mobile Launchpad, which is the start menu for your USB HD Drive! So no need to think about drivers, and all that. Again, this baby is 100% Plug 'N Play so you can Rock 'N Roll!!!

And, of course, we can't leave out the fact that this Mini HD looks gooood! Sleek, slick, compact,,,what else do you need.

Oh, and this comes with its own USB cable, a Quick Start Guide AND a travel wallet. (Can you say, "Accessorize"?)

These are going to go out the door in a hurry! I'd say grab one or two while you can for yourself...maybe even one as a gift if we still have any. Grab 'em today for just $21.97 and US Shipping is FREE! Here's the link:

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4999

PS...You KNOW you're gonna need more storage - grab a couple of these today!!

Computers 101

Q:
Sometimes my computer freezes up. Is there something I can do besides shutting it off to get it working?

A:
Sometimes Windows will get itself all tied into a bunch and there is no choice but to cut the power to your computer and restart (you should wait at least 10 seconds before re-booting).

But before you do something so drastic, try pressing the Ctrl+Alt+Del buttons first (hold down Ctrl, then Alt, then Del ).

If you use the Ctrl+Alt+Del key combination, you'll find that a box, called the Task Manager, will appear that allows you to choose the offending program from a list and force it to shut down. In fact, it may even have the words "Not Responding" next to it on this list. Just click the "End Task" button to shut the individual program down. If you get another box a few seconds later asking you to wait or "End Task," choose to End task.

If you happen to be using Windows Vista, something slightly different will occur when you use the Ctrl+Alt+Del combination. Instead of just the Task Manager popping up, you will be greeted with a screen that gives you a few options instead. The good news is that the Task manager is still here, and works pretty much the same as mentioned above. Simply choose the offending program and click "End Task".

Finally, if you notice that your computer just freezes after awhile, especially if it takes about the same amount of time to freeze each time you use it, you may have a problem with overheating.

Make sure the computer has plenty of room to breathe—several inches all the way around is the minimum. If you're blocking vents, you're asking for trouble. Also, remember that some computers have vents on the bottom of the case, so if you stick it on a shag carpet, you may be blocking airflow. Oh, if you do suspect overheating is a problem (and the machine apparently has plenty of ventilation room), checking the CPU fan may be a good idea too.

MS Office

PowerPoint Peek-A-Boo!

Here's the situation: you have a really great MS PowerPoint presentation—it covers "everything". It's a masterpiece, if you do say so yourself.

Now you need a slightly different presentation—this one should cover only part of the "masterpiece" mentioned above.

What do you do?

You could simply skip through the unneeded slides while giving the presentation. Not a very slick or wonderful way to do it—distracting for the audience—definitely not your best choice.

Do you copy slides from the original presentation into a new one?

You could—it'd take some time and be an extra file to keep track of—but you could.

Want a quicker, better way?

Maybe a way that doesn't require you to dismantle your presentation each time it needs to be modified?

Yes?

Cool—then it's time to play peek-a-boo with our slides.

Basically what we're going to do is to hide the slides we don't want to display. Trust me, it's faster than the copy / paste into a new file method—and who couldn't use the spare time?

The first thing you'll need to do is to open the presentation you're working with.

Now go to the Slide Sorter View. (View Menu, Slide Sorter choice or the Slide Sorter button in the bottom left corner of the window. The Alt, V then D keys will also accomplish this task.)

Now that you're in the Slide Sorter, you simply need to select a slide that should be hidden. (You do this by clicking it on—you should notice an outline around the selected slide.)

Now click the Hide Slide button located on the Slide Sorter toolbar.

(If you don't see this button, then you may need to display the correct toolbar. Go to the View menu, Toolbars submenu, and then Slide Sorter choice.)

At any rate, once you click the button you should notice a small change regarding the slide you had selected.

See the change yet?

What you should notice as different is the fact that the slide number is now crossed out—meaning that the slide has been hidden.

If you run the slide show now, you'll find that the slide is skipped entirely. (Yeah! Just what we were looking for.)

I can hear the inevitable question: How do I put the slide back into the show?

Good question.

Deserves a good answer, so here it is.

You need to return to the Slide Sorter view, select the slide to be unhidden, and click on the Hide Slide button again.

Instantly you should notice that the slide number is back to normal—meaning that the slide will appear when the presentation is run.

And there you have it.

Your masterpiece presentation may have just become the most useful file on your machine.

Ahhhh—what will you do with all the time you save now that you don't have to copy / paste all the slides?

I'm sure you can think of a few things.

More Cool Stuff

WOW! Make Your Computer Run Like New (Maybe BETTER)!

Amazing Software Makes Windows Run Up To 300% Faster!

It's The Absolute BEST $8.97 You'll Ever Spend On Your PC!

You're Computer Will Be Smokin' Fast!

Customize, Tweak, Secure, Optimize, And Make 'Er FLY!!

OK, these are STILL going like crazy! Thank YOU to the 1000+ who have ordered! If you don't have it yet, you;re missing out big time! Just wait till you check out this mind-blowing deal on System Mechanic 7

It's by far, the very best program I've ever seen for getting the most out of Windows! You'll be blown away at what this does to your PC - You'll think you got a new computer! I tell ya, personally, I think this is just outstanding! I've seen a ton of software, but the improvements this makes is really nothing short of amazing! It optimizes Windows to be the way it SHOULD have been when you purchased it! Read on - and get ready to be really - and I mean REALLY- impressed!

First, I'm seriously impressed at just how easy this software makes it to really get your computer crankin'! I mean, I don't think there's anything on your computer this can't tweak and optimize!

To test, I installed it on my personal machine and it did a quick scan, and then it scared the poop outta me! it came up with a serious warning about a few security problems and gave mesome really helpful speed improvement suggestions. Now here's the cool part - With just a couple mouse clicks, I'm now enjoying a MUCH faster -and much more secure - computer! And I honestly thought I was as tweaked out as I could be! Not even close - this was incredible - and all automatic!

What can it do for you? Let's talk speed - this takes your slow PC and turns it into a Ferrari - you'll think your computer is new again (maybe better than new)! It'll be just flying through programs and impressing the livin' daylights out of ya! This has a whopping 19 different waysto crank up the speed on your machine! In fact, many systems see an absolutely incredible 300% improvement after just some automatic adjusting by this program! WOW - that's worth $8.97 in anyone's book!

Want to surf the internet at up to 300% faster? Oh, man, this can help! Windows isn't necessarily optimized for the fastest connection out of the box, but this program can grab your settings and squeeze out the speed - you'll surf the internet like crazy! Who wouldn't want to surf up to 300% faster?!!? Heck, it even has a speed tool to measure how faster you connection speed is! Just fantastic!

Want more? - Sure ya do! Another thing this does that I'm in absolute love with is it lets youcustomize over 100 "secret" Windows settings! Stuff that you always wish Windows would let you adjust but there isn't really any direct way to do it. This makes it point-and-click easy!! You can:Optimize the way Windows' Start Menu behaves, speed up networking performance, log in automatically, edit your computer registration data, change multimedia behavior, improve pagefile security, customize explorer's context menus, edit advanced administration options, and much more!!

Oh, and just wait till you point your mouse at the Automatic System Maintenance section! I just love this! This part of the program will watch in the background and wait till the system is idle. As soon as you're not using the computer, it will work in the background tuning your computer for absolute peak performance! Here's the really cool part - just touch your mouse, and it stops what it's doing and gives the system back to you! Really! If you've ever been slowed down by a stubborn anti-virus that insisted on scanning while you were working, you know just how cool this is! Oh, and it even lets you pick and choose what optimizations to run!

Another automatic feature I think is just brilliant is the "One-Click" option! It's just what it sounds like - just click the button and System Mechanic runs all of its system enhancement programs andcranks your system up to the next level! Just a button push away! It makes it easy for EVERYONE to have a smokin' system!

Of course, no utility suite would be complete without some killer security tools - and this has the best! This program will quickly scan your system and help you find all the holes - then just plug them with a mouse click! I was really surprised when it found not one, not two, but THREE major holes on my personal PC! I clicked the mouse and the world was safe again!

Oh, and that's not all! This also includes both a world-class Anti-Virus (one of the easiest, most comprehensive AVs I've ever used) and a really top-notch Firewall! Either one retails for more than we're selling the entire suite for! WOW!

PLUS - it destroys spyware, adware, malware and more. OK, put it this way - if it was made to attack your system, this is going to seek it out and destroy it like a battalion of ticked off Marines!

OK, all that's great, but what if your PC is really messed up - like it won't boot? This software can handle that too! Just pop in a recovery CD and System Mechanic will examine your system and get your computer running right again! If you've ever had that sick "why isn't my computer booting" feeling, you can appreciate how great this will be next time it happens!

One more thing and I'll try to stop! System Mechanic is just fanatical about grabbing up wasted space on your hard drive! This just blew me away when it found a whopping 1.5 GIG of wasted hard drive space! Geeze - I've had whole hard drives that were smaller than that! This made grabbing that space back a mouse click away! I tell ya - you just can't go wrong here!

OK - can ya tell I'm impressed? There's actually a LOT more this can do, but I don't want to write a book on it (OK, maybe I've already come close)! I'm currently running this software and couldn't be happier with it. My system is definitely faster than before it was installed and I just love the performance increase! If you only buy one software program this year - GRAB THIS!

Your price? Get this - just $8.97 and US shipping is FREE! AND - this is a 3 license pack too! WOW!!! We've never had it this cheap!!! When you think of all this can do, for $8.97, it's the biggest no-brainer in software history! Check it out:

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4052

PS - Seriously, after just using this for a short time, I wouldn't be without it. If WorldStart wasn't carrying it, I'd happily pay the $70 for it somewhere else - it really is that good! PLEASE - take a look at this one, I've NEVER seen a better, more complete utility program! Blows everything else right out of the water!!

PS - The price will increase to $18.97 very soon (probably like, tomorrow)!

Disabling Anti-Virus

Ever wonder why some programs ask you to disable your anti-virus software before installing? Do you think that some catastrophic, world-changing thing is going to happen if you don't? Why tempt fate? Head over to the Worldstart site today and see how to disable your anti-virus software and forgo any potential mishaps! You'll be glad you did!

Dumb Laws

Ice skates on the sidewalk? A bounty for killing crows? Sounds like a bunch of bad book titles, or maybe even dumb state laws. Wait a minute! They are dumb state laws! If you head over to the WS site today you can check all of them out for yourself. After all, if you own a Pig in Detroit, you can't let it run free unless it has a ring in it's nose! Why take the chance?

Tip of the Day

Installing a New Font

When you buy some new fonts or download them off the internet you may need to manually install them. Sounds difficult, but it really isn't.

If you downloaded the font it may be in your downloads folder in a zipped format, so first you need to unzip the folder. If they are on a disk, then just have the disk in your drive.

Now, open the Fonts folder. You can go to Start / Run (in Windows Vista use the Search Bar) and type in "fonts" (without the quotes) or go the longer way through the Control Panel.

On the File menu select "Install New Font", or in Vista Right-Click in a blank area in the font folder and select "Install New Font".

Here's what it looks like in Vista:

Choose the drive and folder where the new fonts are located.

Click the fonts you want to add while holding down the Ctrl key, or "Select All" then click OK. The fonts will then be added to your folder.

Now when you use your word processing program, the new fonts should appear.

Here's this month's free calendar wallpaper! As always, it's 100% free, so head on over and grab one!

Yellowstone Rainbow

This was taken in my favorite park right as a storm blew past. I was driving along and couldn't believe the intensity of the light and this rainbow.

Yellow Flower

This was last spring in the Smoky Mtns. The light was soft and just right,so I spent an hour or so shooting flowers just like this one.

Antelope Canyon Light Beam

This is from the famous Antelope Slot Canyon in AZ. In summer, these fantastic light beams shine down from above, and I loved the look of this one.
