Quick Tips

Worms and Viruses

I got a question the other day from a reader wanting to know what the difference between a worm and a virus. So, without further adieu, here we go!

Viruses are self-replicating programs that embed themselves into other programs, or even the operating system , and use the host to carry out its function. Unless it attaches itself to an email, a virus stays put on the victim's computer.

A worm is also a computer program that makes copies of itself. They spread from computer to computer (instead of file to file), infecting whole systems, using up resources in the affected computer, and causing heaps of damage. Worms penetrate the computer's memory from a network, find network addresses of other computers, then send their own copies to these addresses. Once launched, a worm can email itself to everyone in an address book or launch a trojan horse.

So, worms are designed to spread out to many computers while viruses generally stay put. Worms take over your computer while viruses destroy files.

Regardless of the differences, though, they are both destructive to your system.

You've Never Experienced A Screen Saver Like THIS!

So Realistic You'll Forget You're Looking At A Computer!

Give Yourself A Treat! Try This Today!

Oh, do we have a real treat for you today!!! We have the coolest screen saver combo EVER! It's Goldfish Aquarium AND Marine Aquarium all in one package! Let me tell ya - this combo is gonna completely blow you away! It'll be the most realistic screen saver to ever grace you monitor! Really - Chech this out!

First, I gotta tell ya - these are an absolutely AMAZING treat! The fish and the aquariums look so realistic that after a few minutes of watching you have remind yourself that you're actually staring at a screen saver and not a real aquarium!

The fish - oh, I gotta tell ya about the fish! Not only do they LOOK like real fish - they act like real fish! If you've ever watched a fish in an aquarium - that's REALLY how these act - (Well, almost - these don't jump out an die on the floor, and they don't just sit in the corner looking ticked-off at ya)! They swim, they "run into the glass", they hide behind weeds, the dart around, bump into each other - You'd have to go to the pet store for a more realistic experience! It's INCREDIBLE!

Oh, and they look completely 3 dimensional too! I've seen competing screen savers and, honestly, they don't really compete at all - their fish look like pancakes! These look amazingly 3-D and life-like (Heck, they look more lively than the ones in my real tank!)

PLUS - Just wait till you feast your eyes on the tanks! The surroundings are completely realistic! The plants actually "sway" in the current, random bubbles pop up, and day turns to night! It couldn't be cooler! In fact, you can even PICK the tanks and adjust the "accessories" in them! Really customizable and really easy to create the tank of your dreams!

Almost forgot - You even get to pick your fish! Choose how many fish you want, what type of fish you want and everything! Or, just let the software pick for you! Either way, it's a screen full of fantastic fish! Choose from 28 different species in Marine Aquarium and 12 amazing goldfish in the Goldfish Aquarium (my fav, BTW :-)

Of course, what's an aquarium without the sound of bubbles and water? Well, this covers you! You can toggle the sound on and off for an amazingly authentic aquarium experience! If you're like me, you'll find it hard to tear yourself away from the screen saver and get back to work! It's VERY fun to watch and incredibly relaxing too!

OK, I could go on and on about how incredible this set is, or I could show you some screen shots! Just take a gander at the images below - but remember - these are resized and as amazing as they look, really don't do the program justice! Head to the site for even more!

First, the Goldfish:

Relax to the swaying plants!

Turn off lights and enjoy a darkened tank!

View your fish from the top down!

Now, a few from Marine Aquarium:

Look at the life-like environment!

Marine Aquarium 2.6 & Goldfish Aquarium
The colors pop like crazy at "night"!
Marine Aquarium 2.6 & Goldfish Aquarium

OK, see what I mean? Again, I REALLY want to stress that those screen shots don't do it justice! Full-screen they look even more amazing - add some animation and sound and you'll find yourself checking your monitor for leaks!

Your cost for this incredible set? You get BOTH Goldfish Aquarium AND Marine aquarium (a $60 value) for just $9.97 and US shipping is FREE!! It's a deal you don't want to miss! If you've never had a screen saver like this, go ahead and give yourself a real treat today! You'll love it too!

The "Easy Hub" Is Finally Here!

Turns 1 USB Port Into 4 - PLUS:

Ingenious Design Eliminates "Rat's Nest" Of USB cords!

Wow - We just got in these amazing new 4 Port USB Hubs that are unlike ANYTHING we've seen before!Trust 4-Port USB 2.0 Triangle Hub In fact, they should have called this, "The Easy Hub", because this will make your computer life SOOO much simplier!

First of all, plug this fantastic 4-Port Hub into your computer's USB port and you've just turned 1 USB port into 4! But what makes this Hub really stand out from the crowd is the way functionality and design are combined in this sleek, black contour look. The first thing you'll notice is its unique design. Have a crowded desktop with "no room to grow"? This hub's triangular shape will fit into just about any nook or cranny you can find.

Next, you'll love the way these USB ports are laid out. Ask yourself: How many times have you had to fight to try and plug your USB device into the back of your computer? But you know how it goes - with the ports jammed so close together, it's an amazing struggle just to get your fingers out of the way! Or, even worse, after taking the time to re-arrange your USB connections, you find out that your device won't even fit because of its awkward design (happened to ME last week!)

Well, that's where this 4-Port Hub is a real time (and aggravation!) saver! This Hub has one port on EACH side AND... two ports on the top! (Plenty of room for even the FATTEST of fingers to move around, LOL!) As an added advantage your USB cords will be laid out in a nice, orderly fashion. (No more "rat's nest" of USB cables knotted up on your desktop!)

Also, do you have a wireless mouse or keyboard with the "dongle" plugged into the back of your computer? Our research has shown that many computer users have enjoyed an increase in performance in such devices when these dongles are plugged into the ports so the emitting signal from the dongle has a clear line of sight to the device. Well, the ports on top of this Hub are PERFECT for this application!

PLUS this Hub is "Hot-Swappable", meaning you just plug your devices right in - no need to re-start your computer every time you're ready to plug in a device! Finally! Speaking of "plugging in", this baby's "Plug 'N Play". No need to waste time fumbling around loading programs and drivers and then hoping your device will work. Just plug it in and you're good to go!

This 2.0 High Speed Hub is designed to take advantage of the speed of the latest technology. (With a raw data rate at 480Mbps, USB 2.0 is a whoppin' 40 times faster than USB 1.x which is only rated at 12Mbps.) But don't worry, this Hub is "backward compatible", so it's made to work with all of your USB 1.x, too.

Oh, and laptop users are going to LOVE this! If you have a laptop you like to carry around, this 4-Port Hub is light and sleek enough to haul wherever you go!

There's a lot of features and added advantages packed into this clever little 4-Port Hub. And for $12.97 (And FREE US Shipping) it just makes sense to grab a couple of these for all of your computers at home, work or on the road!

PS - WARNING! Only a limited number of these are available - get to the site early or you'll miss out!!

Computers 101

Q:
What is a trojan horse?

A:
We've all heard or seen the story from Homer's Iliad about the Trojan wars. In it the Greeks give a giant wooden horse to their enemies, the Trojans, supposedly as a peace offering. But after the horse is inside the city walls, Greek soldiers sneak out of the horse's hollow belly and open the city gates, allowing their soldiers to enter and capture Troy.

The Trojan Horse-Raoul Lefevre, 1464

Similarly, what is known as a Trojan Horse is a destructive program disguised as a simple application or useful program. The program contains additional hidden code which allows the unauthorized collection, exploitation, falsification, or destruction of data. Though lumped in with viruses, it doesn't propagate itself like a virus does.

One of the worst kinds of Trojans is a program that claims to rid your computer of viruses, but instead puts them on your computer. Another common type will open a security hole for a hacker to get into your system and do all kinds of nasty stuff.

You can prevent getting a Trojan Horse by having up-to-date anti-virus software, not opening unsolicited attachments, and scanning freeware and shareware you download before you unzip.

Overlay Calendars

If you like to use multiple calendars in Outlook 2007 then you know what I mean about how limited the viewing space for each one can be when you want to see more than one of them at a time.

Here's how four calendars side by side on my monitor appear in a month view.

Keep in mind that I have a widescreen monitor so that extends the horizontal space from the usual.

Anyway, if you take a good look you'll see that you can't even read the appointments… so what use is this to you?

Probably not much and that's why I have another suggestion for those of you with the need for multiple calendars - Calendar Overlay Mode.

What's that?

Well, it's exactly what it sounds like. Your many calendars will be displayed one over the other and yet you'll still see everything.

While I realize that you can't actually read things but if you take a good look you can probably see that the appointments are color coded. The coding is done automatically, based on the calendar they are on. The top calendar's appointments are in black and the others are the color of their calendar's border.

In addition, because of the extra space in each day, not only can you read the appointment name but you can also see times for each one.

You can click the calendar tabs at the top to bring a different one to the top. When you do you'll notice that the color coding adjusts as necessary.

In my opinion, it's a huge improvement!

So, if you're interested then here's what you need to know.

You can get this appearance in one of two ways.

  • First, you can select a calendar to overlay and use the View menu, View in Overlay Mode choice.
  • Or, you can click the left arrow to the left of the calendar name on its tab.

Either of these actions will place the selected calendar over the leftmost calendar.

If you want to keep overlaying them then select another calendar tab and repeat the process.

Change your mind?

No problem.

When you overlaid the calendars the left arrow became a right arrow. If you click the right arrow on a calendar tab you'll now see them side by side. (The View menu will also switch your choice to read View in Side-By-Side Mode.)

Now, if you really start to experiment with this one you'll find that you can mix and match the views. You can overlay some of them and leave the rest side by side.

If multiple calendars are a major part of your "Outlook life" then this is really a feature you need to investigate!

More Cool Stuff

OK, these just won't stop selling, not for a second! So, I thought, hey, why not give you one more chance at 'em? SOOOOO - here ya go! Grab one of the most amazing deals ever seen on Quicken Willmaker before they completely sell out! It's really an amazing program - and one everyone should have - check it out:

Quicken Willmaker 2008 Plus!

The Software Everyone Is Dying To Get! (Sorry Couldn't Resist)

The Ultimate Program For Creating Your Own Legal Will, Living Trust - MORE!!

Save Incredible Amounts Of Money On Legal Fees!

Make Your Own Legal Wills, Living Wills, Heath Care Directive, Powers of Attorney, Final Arrangements, and More!

Retails For $50, Amazon Sells It For $34, Barns & Noble And Office Depot Both Sell It For $50!

Your Price - Just $12.97!!! WOW!!

OK, today's title is a little different than our normal fare - but something everyone really needs. It's called Quicken's Willmaker Plus 2008 and it's a great way to make sure your wishes are followed when the time comes. I know, no one wants to think about going to the information superhighway in the sky, but everyone's time does indeed come. We all have a responsibility to make sure our loved ones don't need to go through any more grief than necessary, and this software can really help.

We all know what happens. Getting a lawyer is sometimes way too expensive, so many people are left without any type of will when the inevitable time comes. This software not only covers standard wills, but also has extensive living will documentation. When I was only 30 years old, my wife and I had a will drawn up by a lawyer, and it was a solid $600 just for a basic "who-gets-what" type of will. I can tell you that THIS is the program we use now - so much simpler to update and work with than a lawyer! Besides, makes it easy to take Uncle Ed off your will when he messes up at the family reunion :-)

This software makes creating a legal, binding, will or living will simple and extremely affordable. It includes thousands of document possibilities to suit just about every situation -- but don't worry, it's incredibly user-friendly! You'll have them finished in minutes - really! It's basically a "fill in the blanks" proposition.

Making updates is a snap too. This program is so informative and in a language everyone can understand. It basically takes you through an interview process which makes it really simple to fill out your document. Plus, if you're not sure what any of it means, the software includes an amazing guide, informative glossary, and a host of online resources. It breaks down the legalese into something all of us can understand!

To help show easy it is, here's an example. Let's say you're filling out a "Final Arrangements" document. Before you even get started, it gives you a check list - name, body donation, organ donation, burial details, person to oversee plans. Then, the column to the right tells you the purpose of each of those items. Now you know what you need and why :-)

In addition to living and standard wills, this also includes Power of Attorney documents, a legal glossary if you get stuck, and other critical estate planning forms. Everything you need in one easy to use package!

Let's face it - proper planning is something we all need to take care of for our loved ones. I've personally had a will since I was 30 years old, and it gets updated on a regular basis. To me, it just doesn't make sense not to have everything in place - I can't imagine putting my family through that. Plus, this is from Quicken, so it's not just some off the wall software that some guy wrote in his basement - this is the real deal. Wouldn't surprise me even a little if this was the software lawyers used to create legal wills and documents for their clients!

Your price is fantastic - just $12.97 and US shipping is free. Again, this retails for $50 - and when you consider all it does it's is worth every penny of that price. If you've been putting off making a will or living will, just $12.97 can get you there.

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4955

PS - Estate planning is something we all have to do. It's not a task anyone enjoys, but at this price it's probably the least expensive way you'll ever see to get the job done. Isn't it worth $12.97 to know that your affairs will be in order when the time comes?

Tip of the Day

The Inkjet Refill Debate

You want to save some money by buying ink refills? Well, in general, I don't recommend using refills.

They are probably OK for printers with ink nozzles that are NOT built into the cartridge (like Canon printers), but I would still be careful. The ink may not be the same quality as what you would get from the manufacturer.

If you are using an HP printer, the ink nozzle is built into the printer cartridge and is not meant to be run refill after refill. When you replace your ink cartridge, you also replace your old nozzle with a brand new one. This helps keep the print quality good (especially important if you're trying to print out photographs).

Another point to consider is that when you bought your printer, you were probably looking at print quality. Why take a chance on compromising that print quality to save a few bucks?

Those budget ones you get UCE ("Uckie"—unsolicited commercial email) about aren't that great either. usually they are made with recycled ink. Better to spring for the factory stuff or a decent generic from your local office supply. I know we all want to save money, but I prefer good quality prints and longer printer life.

I know I'll probably have tons of e-mail over this from people who refill their cartridges with no trouble. But I get email all the time asking for my opinion :-)

Today's Feature

Windows SteadyState part 1

A while ago, we wrote an article about a new Microsoft program called Windows SteadyState. For those of you that missed it, the article gave a quick description of the program and explained that it is a great way to secure your computer if it has multiple users. Expecially if those multiple users happen to be the kind that might mess up your computer!

Well, since that article was written, I've been asked several times to go into more detail on how to use this great, free program offered by Microsoft. So, here we go!

First, let me start out by explaining exactly what SteadyState does. I am sure that many of you have used computers at work. A lot of times, work computers are connected to a server that controls what users are allowed to do. The server can make it so users are not able to do certain acts that might cause damage to the computer or compromise sensitive data. Well, that is all great if you are connected to a big corporate network, but what if you wanted to be able to control your computer at home just like this? That is where SteadyState comes in. SteadyState is a set of tools that allow you to control your computer with the same precision as a network admin!

Here is what it looks like. You can download it here

Steadystate screen shot
Today, we are going to talk about the global settings that you see in the middle of the screen. These setting effect all users on the system.

Lets first look at the "set computer restrictions" area. Since there are quite a few boxes here, I am going to cover the important ones. Under privacy settings, you will see one line that says, "Prevent locked or roaming user profiles that cannot be found on the computer from logging on". If you have more than one computer in your home, you might want to uncheck this one. This will allow for file sharing to work more smoothly with usernames and passwords.

Now, under "security settings", there are a few good ones. The first option says " remove the administrator user name from the welcome screen". If you want to hide the admin, just check this. This works great for keeping people from trying to log on as admin. Another line that reads " Prevent users from creating folders or files on the drive C:" will allow you to stop all changes to the main drive on the computer. this will definitely make the system less likely to be corrupted due to bad file changes. The best one on this screen is the one that reads "prevent write access to USB storage devices". This is great for stopping people from getting things off the computer.

Ok. now you can click OK and move to the software update section as shown in the screen shot above. This screen allows you to tell SteadyState to install automatic updates. Many times, this option is already turned on through windows update, but enabling it through Steadystate overrides any other users' settings. Another great feature.

Finally, lets go to the "protect the hard disk" area. This is a very powerful feature should you decide that you want to use it. With this option turned on, you can use the computer and do whatever you want. After you restart the computer, it will return to its previous state, no changes will be made at all! Now, keep in mind that this means you can even save downloads or anything.  For some, this feature wont make much sense, but for others, its amazing!

OK. These are the global features of Windows SteadyState. Next week, we will look into some of the "per user" options.

Till next time, stay safe out there

~Gary

Amanda's Coolsite

Mount St. Helens VolcanoCam

Remember when Mount St. Helens erupted? I don't. The eruption everyone remembers from 1980 is before my time, so I wanted to check into this volcano. I found the Mount St. Helens Volcano Cam. This Web Cam is updated every five minutes with a static image (meaning there isn't live feed, just a picture.) But don't try to view at night or you'll get a black screen—this is for daylight viewing only.

"This is an image of Mount St. Helens, taken from the Johnston Ridge Observatory. The Observatory and VolcanoCam are located at an elevation of approximately 4,500 feet, about five miles from the volcano. You are looking approximately south-southeast across the North Fork Toutle River Valley."

There was a weather update when I visited, which will give you the message: "There is nothing wrong with the above image. You are viewing rain and clouds at Mount St. Helens right now as a weather front moves through the Pacific Northwest." Which is really cool since the image I was viewing looked like steam was rolling out of the volcano, on second glance it really did look like storm clouds as they posted.

And if you want images of the eruptions, hang in there. They are going to be posting pictures from those eruptions and a video of the first eruption. I've been checking back daily. I'm curious to see how it all looked.
