Computer Tips [ Discover What's REALLY Inside Your PC + Handling Alert Boxes + How To Take Photos In The Rain ] 03/17/2009

Computer No, this isn't Steve. You can tell because Steve never wears a suit :-)

Quick Tips

Refresh It

We all use our desktops quite often when we're working on our computers, don't we? I mean, that's where all of our icons are placed, that's where we can change our desktop themes, our wallpaper designs and our screen saver choices. And that's just the beginning of what we use the desktop for. There's so much to be done on the desktop, we just can't take the chance of it not working right.

What am I talking about? Well, every once in awhile, desktops do freeze up. You could be working in a right click menu and when you're done with it, instead of it disappearing like it normally does, it will stay on your screen. Sometimes this happens when we're trying to double click on an icon as well. Has that ever happened to you? Hopefully you know a little better of what I'm referring to now.

So, what can you do to "unfreeze" the desktop? Well, if you have a right click menu open, just click on Refresh. The desktop will go back to its normal state. If you're having trouble with something else, go ahead and right click. The same menu will pop up and you can select Refresh from there. There's always a way to turn things around! So, go ahead and give your desktop a refresh!

Absolutely Mind-Blowin' Card Reader Deal!

Just $7.97!!! Really!

WOW!! I Think I am Speechless!!!

Now That's A Price That'll Really Make You Smile!!! :-D

If I had to name my top favorite gadgets, card readers would definitely be on the list! I have so many SD cards, that a card reader is the only way I view what is stored on any given card. I just find them so cool and convenient. And they are so much easier to use than a messy cord. However, this amazing card reader really caught my attention, and I know it will catch yours too!

First, we have never sold card reader like this for a price as low as $7.97! WOW! We have done $9.97, $10.97, heck even $16.97- but never before have we had one for a price as low as $7.97! Now that is just awesome!

Everyone with an SD (secure digital), MMC, or RS card (or any variation thereof) will just LOVE this card reader!!

Think about it, what would be easier- popping out your memory card, sliding it into the card reader, and plugging it into your USB port? Or, finding that cable that came with your device, untangling it (because you know they are always tangled), plugging it into your USB port, transferring your files, then following the cord as you go through the jungle of cords behind your computer, searching for the correct USB port and finally unplugging it? I think that answer is a real no-brainer! Of course, the card reader option is the easiest way to transfer your information from your card to your computer or vice versa!

Next, let's discuss the design! This card reader is extremely compact and lightweight, therefore, making it perfect for anyone on the go!!! And the best part is, this card reader has Plug and Play, allowing it to work on any computer without having to install anything! Better yet, because you can transfer files to and from this card reader, it will work as a flash drive too!!!

Because it uses USB 2.0, this card reader has blistering fast data transfer speed, and will definitely satisfy all your data transfer needs. This is one that you just have to check out!!! I just adore it, and for the price of just $7.97 and US Shipping is Free, you will adore yours too!

P.S. These WILL increase to $12.97 first thing Wednesday! RUN to the site today!

If you have a wireless network you want to jump onto at home, at a friend's house, at a hotel, or at a favorite restaurant, this makes getting connected almost too easy. Oh, and if you're on the road and long for an easy to use wireless solution, this is a no-brainer. Look at these features:

Jumbo Thermometer

Awesome Thermometer!!

15" Tall With 1/2" Tall Numbers!

Talk About BIG, Easy To Read Text!

WOW! Just look at that picture! These thermometers are FANTASTIC!! Sure, they seem to be just your typical mercury thermometers, but they have a "BIG" twist! The numbers are 1/2" tall and super easy to read! You'll never again set forth into the great outdoors wearing the wrong type of jacket because of a misread thermometer! YES!! (OK, maybe that just happens to me :)

Seriously, you know how it goes, most of the little thermometers you get from the store have those tiny, itty-bitty numbers that are next to impossible to read if you're more than a foot away. Well, this thermometer solves that problem - the letters are HUGE and can be easily read from a LOT further away!

The great thing about big numbers are all the choices you have for hanging! You don't have to place it right next to a window - you could hang it where YOU want it and still be able to read the numbers! Hang 'em on the house, garage, hear the pool, by the desk, off the porch - anywhere! Heck, grab a couple and always have the temp handy (I have one on my garage so we can see it from our little above ground pool, one in the shade on our patio, and I think I'm going to put another actually IN the garage so when I'm working on a car I can complain how hot / cold it is with a good degree of accuracy :-)

Summer's comin' and you know you're gonna want to know how hot it is! Grab one of these today! Just look at the deal we have for ya!

We're talkin' just $5.97 here! And that's FREE US Shipping too! WOW! Don't miss out, we don't have a lot of them and for that kind of money, these are bound to be really (really) popular today!

PS - The amazing price on these will increase first thing tomorrow to $10.97 - get 'em while they're cheap!

Computers 101

What is an alert box?

You come across alert boxes all the time. You probably do every single time you use your computer, but you just may not know what they are. You probably call them something else, like a popup box, dialog box, message box, etc. All of those terms are referring to an alert box, it's just a more technical name for them.

An alert box is just a small box that comes up on your computer screen to let you know that your system is about to perform an operation or something similar to that. Some of the alert boxes are there to inform you that the procedure your computer is doing may have damaging consequences, so your system just wants to make sure you know what is going on.

An example of an alert box is when you delete something off of your desktop or when you delete files. A message always comes up asking you if you're sure you want to remove the items, just so you're sure of exactly what you're doing.

Another example is the Recycle Bin alert message. It always says, "Are you sure you want to permanently remove these items"? It gives you one last chance to say OK or Cancel, depending on what you really want to do with the items you place in the bin.

The alert boxes act as little reminders for you so you don't accidentally do something you didn't mean to do. If you're working on an important document and you for some reason forget to save it, an alert message will save you from deleting everything without even knowing it. A message will come up asking you if you want to save your changes before closing the program and I'm betting this message has saved several of you many times. I know it has for me.

The universal icon for the alert boxes is a triangle with an exclamation point in the middle. Other alert messages include illegal operations, shutting down your computer, any changes you make on your system and others. They're there to save you, so be thankful for them!

MS Office

Start From Here

Here's a really quick tip for my MS PowerPoint users…

Did you know that you can start your slideshow from the beginning with a single key?

Yep, that's right, it can be done.

A simple jab at the F5 key and your presentation starts at the first slide.

And, I have one more extra tidbit for my PowerPoint 2007 users… you can use Shift + F5 to start the presentation from the currently selected slide.

Yeah! No more mouse navigation to the correct button or menu - just a quick key or two and you're ready to start.

All The FREE Music You Could Ever Want!

Amazing New Software Makes It EASY!

Grab Hundreds Of Songs Per Hour!

You May Never Pay For Another MP3!

WOW! This is the most exciting software I think we've ever offered! It's called Skwid and once you get past the strange name, you're gonna be absolutely blown away at what this software does! This is going to be HUGE!

You love music right? Well, wouldn't it be great if there was a way to legally get all the songs you ever wanted - for free? With this software - you can! Interested? I thought so!

This amazing software lets you record internet radio and turns the tracks into high-quality MP3s for use on your MP3 player, iPod, Computer, CDs, whatever!! You can get thousands of songs - and they won't cost you a cent! You may never buy another MP3! WOW!

Here's how it works - You can search for the type of music you enjoy, or pick from a list. There a HUGE variety - 23 main genres, but with all the "sub-genres" I counted over 200 different types of music you can choose from, so you're bound to find all the types of music you enjoy! From there, just hit the record button! You can have it record tracks form just one station, do dozens of stations at once, or just pick your favorites! TONS of options!

I had mine set to record from 20 stations simultaneously and WOW! I had a whoppin' 38 songs in 15 minutes! Is that amazing or what? I had to sort though and decide which ones to keep, but you gotta admit, that's pretty cool! What an amazing program!

PLUS this thing is loaded down with radio stations too! We're talking 2600+ internet radio stations at your fingertips - and more are added all the time!

PLUS - This software actually allows you to add your own stations! That's right - if you listen to internet radio and your station isn't listed, you can add it to this program! Now that's cool! You'll never run out of songs to record, that's for sure! I think I'm going to find my favorite 10 or 20 stations and record from those. Heck, you can even use this just to listen to internet radio if you like! (I'm listening to it as I type this!)

Oh, and here's the kicker! Not only can this record internet radio stations - it can record ANYTHING coming through your computer's sound card! Wow - think about that for a minute! If you have a favorite song you just have to get, simply find it online, play it, and hit Record with this program! This would work great if a new song came out and the video to the song was online - just watch the video and record! You'd have the song on your MP3 player before it was even available in stores! Now that's serious power! WOW!

So, what do you do with all these songs after you sort 'em out? Well, once you record them just import them to your favorite MP3 software (or right to your player) - or iPod users can import them into iTunes and use with your iPod! How cool is that?

Plus, since these are just standard MP3s, you can also play them on Windows Media player with zero problems - even send them to CDs or your MP3 player right from Windows Media Player - EZ!!!!!! That's right - you don't even need an MP3 player to enjoy these free songs!

What about the quality? I've been pleasantly surprised - and really happy with it! The songs sound great and most of the time you even get the artist name! PLUS in many cases, the radio stations are broadcasting in 128 bit format - the same quality you normally get when you buy MP3s!

What's that? You already have a huge CD collection you wish was in MP3 format? Yup, you guessed - This can convert your CDs to MP3s too! Just pop in the CD, and select the songs you want to convert - then click the Convert button! It's that easy! A few mouse click and all your favorite CD songs are now MP3s! WOW!!

BONUS! In addition to all the great audio recording features, this can also take your personal video files and convert them so they work on your iPod! What a great way to show off your videos!

Finally, we're trying something new with this one - it's a download! That's right - we worked out a deal with the publisher, so you don't have to wait to get this amazing program in the mail! Now, this is our first time doing a download only run like this, but we should be able to get your code to you within 48 hours - beats waiting for the mailman!

Your cost? You're not going to believe this - just $9.97! Is that amazing or what? Most of the time, MP3 music is about a buck a song, so figure this will pay for itself after it finds you just 17 great songs! I had that many "keepers" in less than a half hour! Give it a try, you'll be glad you did!

PS - This is going to be huge, no doubt about it! The sooner you order, the faster we can get your code to you!

Tip of the Day

Inside, Outside, Upside down!

How well do you know the insides of your PC? I mean, it's all enclosed in a shiny case for the most part, and barring anyone out there who has a window cut into the side (and there are those out there that do), looking into the abyss of the home computer is just not something the average user is apt to do! So, say you want to upgrade the RAM, video card, or (gasp!) the processor in your home system. Even if you had X-Ray goggles (which Worldstart does not carry, unfortunately) you still wouldn't be able to gather every detail and nuance about your hardware. What's one to do to gather information on their system without picking up a screwdriver? The answer, my friends, can be summed up in two words: Software. Magic!

Recently a kind-hearted user notified me of a freeware program by a company called CPUID. It's called CPU-Z; a diagnostic program that gathers information about things like your processor and RAM, and then displays it right on your screen or outputs to a text file for printing. All the specifics on your system's silicon innards can be made visual without even cracking the case open! Pretty slick, huh? Now you know to buy (insert name of component here) instead of going to the store and guessing!

Another, more potent option is Sandra from SiSoftware. Sandra is an impressively featured, free program (there are more potent purchasable versions, too) that does everything CPU-Z does and a little more to boot. Everything from operating system specifics to what peripheral is hooked up where can be discerned via this application, plus much, much more. I like it for it's diagnostic powers, though. Sandra not only gives you the skinny on what's inside, but also how to make it work optimally!

Put down the screwdriver, and stop worrying about buying the right component! These two programs offer all the help you need to find out exactly what's on the inside, before actually going in there! After you get back from the store you can break out the tool kit, or call your resident guru to impress the heck out of them with your tech savvy!

Today's Feature

Digital Camera / SLR Rain Covers

Camera Rain Covers are an absolute must for snapping photos in inclement weather, so I suggest using this great accessory to protect your expensive camera and lenses! Have peace of mind knowing that your gear will be protected and you can still get that perfect picture by using Camera Rain Cover. Hydrophobia is one of the leading brands that I have been using with complete satisfaction. Here are the details:
Hydrophobia 300 - 600 is the first rain cover specifically designed to be pre-mounted for quick deployment. When in the field, where inclement weather can destroy a shot or gear, photographers need a simple and hassle free system for immediately deploying a rain cover to protect their SLRs and lenses. When it appears like it may rain, photographers attach the Hydrophobia over their lenses before going out into the field, rolling it up tight and out of the way. Then, when weather threatens, they simply unroll the rain cover over the rest of the lens and body, securely protecting both. The rain cover fits onto a 300 f2.8, 400 f2.8, 500 f4, and 600 f4, making it ideally suited for sports and nature photographers.

Hydrophobia comes with two extended sleeves through which photographers insert their arms to access all of their camera controls. It allows them to shoot vertically in either direction, and they can add a teleconverter to the lens by simply unzipping the back. (Eyepieces for different camera models are sold separately). The fabric used on the Hydrophobia is ten times as waterproof as normal fabric. Instead of a “spray” coating, a “film” is applied to the underside of the fabric, as well as a tricot mesh to protect it, making it a far more impenetrable three-layer fabric. In addition, a waterproof tape is applied to all seams, providing an even more waterproof barrier.

For professionals and amateur SLR shooters who can’t afford to lose a shot or to have their cameras and lenses damaged, the Hydrophobia 300 - 600 is a powerful new tool for getting the shot in even the roughest conditions.

Amanda's Coolsite

I have to confess I love wiki’s. Now that they’ve cropped up all over the web and you can find one for just about anything it is great to see that someone made a visual wiki. What does that mean? It means that not only do you get great information, but you get visual and interactive information as well.

To get started I recommend watching the video on the main page; it will give you a really good idea as to how this site should be used. It’s definitely worth watching, but I know some of you are going to be as curious as I was and dive right into the content.

If you decided you’d rather dive right in, click the Try VisWiki Out Now link. You’re going to love this page. On this page you’ll find: a featured article, what’s going on In The News, an On This Day feature, and my favorite one – Did You Know?

You can also just look something up. All you have to do is type in a keyword in the search field at the top of the page, and then click the Search button. This will bring up a listing for you to choose from, make your selection and you’ll be whisked away to that keyword’s article page.

On the actual article pages themselves you’ll find any videos that relate to the term, a web of terms related to your keyword, images, and more.

I think that this site is a great addition to the wiki’s out there. I bookmarked it, and I hope you will too!
