Quick Tips

Dual Boot

Did you know you can have more than one operating system on just one single computer? If you've never heard of the term mentioned above in the title, you're in for a real treat today! Now, I'm sure most of you are able to figure out (even if it's just a little) what a dual boot is just by putting the two words together. But what all does it entail and how can you do it for yourself? Well, come along with me as I explain everything!

Basically, a dual boot is when you install multiple operating systems on one PC. By doing that, you're also able to choose which system you want to run each time you start up your computer. These days, a good example of that would be to have Windows XP on your computer, along with Windows Vista. Yes, I promise, it's possible! A dual boot can be done by a program called a boot loader and it's actually not too hard to do. (You'll want to read up on it and know for sure what you're doing before you start, but I'm just saying, it's not impossible to do on your own).

Now, you might be wondering what a dual boot would even be good for. Well, there are a lot of reasons! If you want to learn a new operating system, but don't want to give up your old one right away, a dual boot is the perfect solution. If a piece of software you have only runs on an older operating system, you can go back and still be able to use it. Dual boots also help software developers to see where their programs work and where they don't. And those are just a few scenarios of when a dual boot would come in handy. So, if that sounds like something you might be interested in, you can do a search for it online and learn all the details. Check it out, my friends!

YES!! Finally!

An Easy Way To Get Data Off Your Old Hard Drive!

PLUS An Ingenious Way To Backup Data!!

Ohh, Keep reading, you're definitely gonna want to check this out ~

WOW - we just came across the handiest little USB Cable Adapter that you're absolutely going to love! Check out these two great uses:

Easily retrieve information from your old hard drive ~
This is super easy, you simply hook the cable to your old hard drive (or even a laptop) and then plug into a USB port on your current computer and "presto" ~ your old drive now shows up as an external hard drive. How simple and easy is that? You can now access any and all the information you have on that drive and save it to your current computer, a flash drive, whatever ~ super simple, anyone can do this!

Turn an internal drive into a convenient external drive for back-ups ~
Do you know what external hard drives are going for compared to internal drives? Well, a 500GB internal drive is about $150.00 and the 500GB external drive is about $279.99 ~ yikes! The main difference is the nice case on the external drive so when it sits on your desk, it looks pretty. I gotta tell you, for a backup drive I don't need it to look pretty ~ I just want it to hold my data and then sit in the desk drawer quietly until I need it again ;-)

Now, this is where this USB Cable Adapter comes in really handy. Again, just hook the adapter up to your "internal" drive (it doesn't have to be inside your computer) and then plug into an existing USB port on your computer. Again, easy-peasy! The drive will show up as an external drive on your computer and you can easily back-up all your files ~ pretty cool, huh? When you're done, you can disconnect and store the drive in a drawer ~ no need to have it taking up desk space! And, you've saved about $130.00 by using an "internal" drive as your backup drive!

If you find yourself in either of these situations, I'm telling you ~ you've got to give this a try. You won't believe how easy this really is ~ even the "non-techies" will be surprised! Oh, yeah ~ almost forgot, TODAY ONLY your cost is just $19.97 and that includes FREE shipping in the US!

Computers 101

Q:
I've been using Outlook Express for quite awhile now, but lately, I've been thinking about switching to a Web based e-mail program. Is it really worth it? Is Webmail better? Please tell me all you know!

A:
Great question! I'm sure that over the years, there have been several of you who have wondered that very same thing. It's always a guessing game when you're thinking about switching to another service and it's definitely no different for e-mail clients. When comparing Web based e-mail and desktop e-mail, there's obviously a lot of pros and cons, but the ultimate decision is yours. So, I'll just go over some of the advantages and disadvantages and you can decide from there!

First off, I want to make sure everyone understands what I'm talking about when I say Web based e-mail (also known as Webmail) and desktop e-mail. Basically, a desktop e-mail program is one you can use right from your computer. They usually come pre-installed on every single computer that's sold and you just have to activate your account to start using it. A couple examples of desktop e-mail clients are Outlook Express and Thunderbird.

On the other hand, Web based e-mail programs are the ones like Yahoo!, Hotmail, Gmail, etc. With them, you handle all of your e-mail right from your Web browser. You choose one you'd like to use, you sign up for it and then when you want to check your e-mail, you just go to their Web site, sign in and all of your e-mail will come up.

Now, another question that comes along with Webmail is its security. Webmail is just as secure as desktop mail. They also include everything you'd expect to get from a desktop e-mail client, like an address book, customized folders, spell check and spam filtering. Okay, now that all of that is out of the way, let's take a look at the pros and cons, shall we?!

Pros of Webmail

  • There's no software included with Webmail. You don't have to install anything or keep up with it throughout your e-mail use. Like I said before, everything runs right through your Web browser, so you're also eliminating certain types of spyware and viruses.
  • Webmail saves you some space on your hard drive. All your e-mail folders are stored online through your browser, so you don't have to worry about getting too many e-mails that will eat up all your extra space.
  • You don't have to worry about backing up any of your e-mails. All of your e-mails are kept on a remote server, so they're always available when you need them.
  • Webmail is completely independent from ISPs. Therefore, Webmail can free you from certain ISPs. If you've been wanting to change your ISP for awhile, but you don't want to lose your e-mail address and go through the hassle of changing it, you can start using a Web based e-mail program. So, whenever you want to change your ISP, you can do so without having to change your e-mail address as well.
  • You can access your Webmail account from any computer. As long as the computer has an Internet connection, you can check your e-mail anywhere in the world. You don't have to be on your home computer to see if you have any new messages. With a Webmail account, you can check it at the library, at a friend's house, at a coffee shop, at work and so on.

Cons of Webmail

  • You do have to be online to use a Webmail program. That could cause some problems if you have a slower Internet connection, because you have to stay online until you're completely done viewing, replying to, etc. your e-mails. With desktop e-mail, you can download your e-mails and then look at them offline if you need to.
  • With Webmail, you won't be able to find extra features, such as stationery, templates, a dictionary, thesaurus, etc. You can't do much text formatting either.
  • Webmail is free, but you basically get what you pay for when it comes to e-mail storage space and availability. Also, if your Webmail client goes out of business, you're pretty much out of luck.

There's the quick rundown for you. Now, if you think the pros outweigh the cons and you still want to switch to a Web based e-mail client, you can easily do so at any time. Three of the most popular Webmail programs are Yahoo!, Hotmail and Gmail. Each of those have a decent amount of storage space and they're all 100 percent free. If you visit any of their Web sites, you'll see a place where you can sign up to start receiving your e-mail there. It's very easy to get started!

So, I'm not sure which way you're all leaning on this topic, but hopefully, you now have enough information that will help you make your final decision. Many people use Webmail each and every day and they love it. Maybe it's time you give it a try too!

MS Office

Let Excel Proofread For You

So, you've just entered a formula into an MS Excel cell and you get this: #NAME.

What's that?

Well, you're actually looking at Excel's way of letting you know you've used a name Excel doesn't recognize.

For me, it most commonly means I've entered the name of a function with a typo and Excel is confused.

If you have a short, simple formula, it's no problem to scan what you've typed to find the problem. But what about those long, complicated formulas that contain several different functions and named data ranges?

That scenario gets a little tougher to proofread.

It can even get downright frustrating if you're not able to easily find the problem.

So, may I suggest you let Excel help?

Yeah, I thought you'd like that idea!

In order to have Excel "lend a helping hand," simply type your function names in small case letters.

When you hit the Enter key, Excel will capitalize the letters of all the functions it recognizes.

Then when you go to find the error, you'll immediately know that all the function names that are capitalized are not the problem and you can concentrate on the items that are still in small case.

A quick side note: I found that Excel wouldn't capitalize the names of data ranges, but let's face it, if we can get Excel to at least help narrow down our search for the error, we're making progress!

FREE Music - Yours For The Takin'!!

Easy To Use Software Creates Amazing MP3 From Internet Radio!

Grab Hundreds Of Songs Per Hour!

You May Never Pay For Another MP3!

OK, we knew this was going to be big when we mentioned it last week, but the sales for this are though the roof! Considering what you get, I can see why! This program can literally save you hundreds, even thousands of dollars! You've gotta check this out - and join the hundreds who are already downloading even as you read this!

First off, I think this is the most exciting software I think we've ever offered! It's called Skwid and once you get past the odd name, you're gonna be absolutely blown away at what this software does! This is going to be HUGE!

You love music right? Well, wouldn't it be great if there was a way to legally get all the songs you ever wanted - for free? With this software - you can! Interested? I thought so!

This amazing software lets you record internet radio and turns the tracks into high-quality MP3s for use on your MP3 player, iPod, Computer, CDs, whatever!! You can get thousands of songs - and they won't cost you a cent! You may never buy another MP3! WOW!

Here's how it works - You can search for the type of music you enjoy, or pick from a list. There a HUGE variety - 23 main genres, but with all the "sub-genres" I counted over 200 different types of music you can choose from, so you're bound to find all the types of music you enjoy! From there, just hit the record button! You can have it record tracks form just one station, do dozens of stations at once, or just pick your favorites! TONS of options!

I had mine set to record from 20 stations simultaneously and WOW! I had a whoppin' 38 songs in 15 minutes! Is that amazing or what? I had to sort though and decide which ones to keep, but you gotta admit, that's pretty cool! What an amazing program!

PLUS this thing is loaded down with radio stations too! We're talking 2600+ internet radio stations at your fingertips - and more are added all the time!

PLUS - This software actually allows you to add your own stations! That's right - if you listen to internet radio and your station isn't listed, you can add it to this program! Now that's cool! You'll never run out of songs to record, that's for sure! I think I'm going to find my favorite 10 or 20 stations and record from those. Heck, you can even use this just to listen to internet radio if you like! (I'm listening to it as I type this!)

Oh, and here's the kicker! Not only can this record internet radio stations - it can record ANYTHING coming through your computer's sound card! Wow - think about that for a minute! If you have a favorite song you just have to get, simply find it online, play it, and hit Record with this program! This would work great if a new song came out and the video to the song was online - just watch the video and record! You'd have the song on your MP3 player before it was even available in stores! Now that's serious power! WOW!

So, what do you do with all these songs after you sort 'em out? Well, once you record them just import them to your favorite MP3 software (or right to your player) - or iPod users can import them into iTunes and use with your iPod! How cool is that?

Plus, since these are just standard MP3s, you can also play them on Windows Media player with zero problems - even send them to CDs or your MP3 player right from Windows Media Player - EZ!!!!!! That's right - you don't even need an MP3 player to enjoy these free songs!

What about the quality? I've been pleasantly surprised - and really happy with it! The songs sound great and most of the time you even get the artist name! PLUS in many cases, the radio stations are broadcasting in 128 bit format - the same quality you normally get when you buy MP3s!

What's that? You already have a huge CD collection you wish was in MP3 format? Yup, you guessed - This can convert your CDs to MP3s too! Just pop in the CD, and select the songs you want to convert - then click the Convert button! It's that easy! A few mouse click and all your favorite CD songs are now MP3s! WOW!!

BONUS! In addition to all the great audio recording features, this can also take your personal video files and convert them so they work on your iPod! What a great way to show off your videos!

Finally, we're trying something new with this one - it's a download! That's right - we worked out a deal with the publisher, so you don't have to wait to get this amazing program in the mail! Now, this is our first time doing a download only run like this, but we should be able to get your code to you within 48 hours - beats waiting for the mailman!

Your cost? You're not going to believe this - just $9.97! Is that amazing or what? Most of the time, MP3 music is about a buck a song, so figure this will pay for itself after it finds you just 17 great songs! I had that many "keepers" in less than a half hour! Give it a try, you'll be glad you did!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4438

PS - This is going to be huge, no doubt about it! The sooner you order, the faster we can get your code to you!

Special Note - We're getting into the last of these and once they're gone, we'll probably never see them again (we've been at it for over 10 years and this is the first time we've ever seen something like this!) Make sure you get to the site as soon as you can! You don't want to wish you had one down the road - or get stuck paying $50 somewhere else! Yikes!

WOW!! These are sellin' like virtual hotcakes! 1000+ of these fantastic gadgets flew out the door last week and people are still ordering like crazy! THANK YOU to everyone who ordered! If you've been missin' out, then you owe it to yoruself to check this one out! You''ll want one too!!

I'm so excited! We have an absolutely amazing deal on a little gadget from Memorex called a TravelSync that's going to change the way you deal with your files forever! This ingenious little gadget allows you to effortlessly transfer data from one USB device to another - and get this - you do it without any computer involved! Really!

Why is this so cool? Why am I so excited? Why are you gonna love this? Let's consider a few scenarios that happen all the time!

First, have you ever ran out of memory on your digital camera's card? Sure, everyone's taken that train to frustrationville! Wouldn't be fantastic if you could simply transfer your pictures to a USB flash drive and empty that card without the hassle of getting a computer out? Am I crazy? Nope -  With this handy gadget, you just plug your camera in on one side, then stick in a flash drive on the other side!  Press a button and your images are magically transferred right from your camera to the flash drive - no computer necessary! Then, just clear your card and keep on shooting (you can even have this device clear your card after you're done if you like!)!

Memorex TravelSync Portable Transfer Device

Ooohh, yeah - here's one that happens ALL the time - and we've all been there! Have you ever needed a copy of a file someone else has? You know, maybe you just need a copy of a document, maybe you want a quick copy of a photo, maybe a favorite song - whatever. It may be on a friend's flash drive, camera, MP3 player - you name it, but you want that file!

Well, with this you just plug in the device that has the file on one side (could be a flash drive camera, external HD, memory card, ect) then select the file you want from the list. Next, plug in your flash drive (or whatever USB storage you prefer) into the other side and a couple button presses later you have the file! Seriously - No booting up the computer, no opening up the flash drive, no copying the file over to the desktop, no opening up the other flash drive, no copying to the new flash drive, no shutting down! Once you go the direct copy route with this little guy, you'll never go back!!

OK, want another example? What about this - do you have a external hard drive for backups or extra storage? With this, you could actually transfer your photos, files, music, ect directly to your hard drive from your camera (flash drive, memory card, MP3 player) without ever booting up your computer! Talk about a time saver (and a brilliant way to do quick backups)!

Oh, and what if you come home from a trip with a bunch of memory cards in your pocket you want to backup to that same external HD? Don't mess with your computer - just plug a memory card reader into one side of your TravelSync and your HD into the other! Again, just a button press or two and your files are all transferred from your card reader to the external HD! Couldn't be easier! This would be just spectacular if you're on the road and want to quickly backup those once-in-a-lifetime trip photos on a portable HD!!

It's not just for photos either! Got MP3s? Then you'll LOVE this! You want to transfer the music on your MP3 player to another MP3 player? Guess what? This can transfer your files with no computer required! WAIT! Want to put your MP3s on a flash drive, external HD, or memory card? Yup, you guessed it - this is your go to device!

Here's The Bottom Line - If you have USB devices that store data (memory cards, flash drives, digital cameras, MP3 players, external hard drives, ect) this can transfer that data from one device to another with NO computer necessary! This is such an ingenious idea! I don't know how many times I just needed a copy of a file and had to mess around with my computer to do all the copying! This makes it easy!

PLUS, it's incredibly easy to use! Most operations are just a couple button pushes away from being done! Even lets you copy everything or selected files - and the LCD screen makes it simple!

This is really one of those devices that once you have it, you'll wonder how you lived without it!

How much do these go for?  You won't believe your price, but first I gotta tell you "their" prices! Get this - right this second Memorex has these listed on their site for $50 and Amazon is at $48.99! Looking around, I couldn't find ANYONE less than $41 for these things - and pretty much everyone was charging shipping on top of it! And frankly, it's really worth the money they're asking too - it's that good. But....

Your cost is absolutely unbelievable! We're talking just $12.97 and US shipping is FREE! That's not a typo - $12.97 gets you this absolutely amazing, incredibly handy $50 device!! RUN to the site and get this while you can! One of the handiest gadgets we've ever offered!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4890

PS - As you can imagine, quantities on this are limited and we're thinking that, yeah, these are gonna sell pretty quick! Get to the site before they gone - you don't want to WISH you had one later!

Tip of the Day

Deleting System Files in Vista

Have you ever needed to delete or overwrite a system file in Windows Vista? If so, I'm sure you quickly realized you can't do it, even as the Administrator. Why, you ask? Well, it's basically because Vista's system files are owned by the TrustedInstaller service by default and the Windows File Protection program keeps them from being overwritten.

Thankfully, there's a way around it! You need to take ownership of the files and then assign yourself rights to delete or modify them. To do that, we'll use the command line. Open an Administrator command prompt by typing "cmd" (without the quotes) into the Start menu search box. Then hit Ctrl + Shift + Enter.

To take ownership of a file, you'll need to use the "takeown" command. Here's an example:

takeown /f C:\Windows\System32\en-US\winload.exe.mui

That will give you ownership of the file, but you still don't have any rights to delete it. So, now, you can run the "cacls" command to give yourself full control rights over the file, like this:

cacls C:\Windows\System32\en-US\winload.exe.mui /G geek:F

Note: I used my username (geek) in the example above, so you'll need to substitute your own username there.

At this point, you should be able to delete the file. If you still can't do so, you may need to reboot your computer in Safe Mode and try it again. For the filename in the example, I was able to overwrite it without Safe Mode, but your situation may be different.

Note: Make sure you know that deletion of system files could cause damages to the Vista operating system, so just be careful when working with this tip. I hope it helps you out!

Track-n-Graph

Do you want to track your weight loss for the year? If so, why not make a graph to make it easier to see your progress? Or, maybe you want to keep track of how many cigarettes you smoke in a day as you try to quit. Maybe you want to track how much you spend on gas for your vehicle. Whatever you want to keep track of, Track-n-Graph can help you do it with graphs that make seeing the data so much easier!

To get started, I would watch the Getting Started Video found here. It's six minutes long, but it walks you through everything from the registration process to the user process of making graphs and using them to track your information. There are even more videos available to help you learn and get the most out of Track-n-Graph. Just head on over to the video tutorial section to find them.

If you don’t want to watch the video, here’s what you need to know. You need to register for an account so that you can store your data. Once you’ve registered, you’ll be taken to the Getting Started page.

To start Track-n-Graphing, you’ll need to find or create a template. To find a template, go to the Tracker Catalog and select the tracker that works best for what you want to do. Put in your information, save the graph and then update it as you obtain more information. You should also always refresh after you update so that you’re getting the most recent information shown on your graph.

I’m using this Web site to track the money I'm spending on gas so that I can budget more accurately throughout the year for gas money. It's a great tool and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

February Wallpaper

Here's February's wallpaper. It's all free, so enjoy!

Snowy Deer

This girl was in a group I managed to slip into. It was snowing pretty good and she was curious about me and got within eight feet for this close-up! If this isn't a February shot, I don't know what is!

Moonrise

I shot this just last month in the Valley of Fire State Park, just about an hour from Las Vegas. We were going to another spot just down the road, but couldn't resist stopping for this shot. Timing on one like this is really tough, so dumb luck came to my rescue.

Summer Stream

Here's one that's a little different. It was shot in the Smokies last summer, but instead of giving you the straight shot, I added a soft-focus/dreamy effect to it. I hope you enjoy it!
