Computer Tips [ Is Your Computer About To Die? Power Supply Troubles + Get Cooking + Friday Funnies ] 02/06/09

Computer Tipswww.worldstart.com No, this isn't Steve. You can tell because Steve never wears a suit :-)

Quick Tips

The Power Supply

So, tell me, has your computer ever made a noise that sounds like one of your fans is dying? I'm sure you would know if it has, because it can be pretty loud and it usually just sounds awful! Well, either way, I'm willing to bet that your fan really isn't the culprit here. Nope, it could be your power supply instead. If you have a noisy fan, you smell something burning or you see smoke or flames shooting out the back of your computer, you may very well have a problem with your power supply. And I assure you, that's a whole lot worse than a dead fan if you don't catch it right away. Keep reading for more on this!

There are many different things that could cause your power supply to go bad. For instance, the fan that runs next to your power supply could get clogged up with dust and dirt and start to run much slower or the fan's bearings could start to wear off. When those things happen, your power supply is at risk of overheating and it will eventually fail. Or, it could have nothing to do with your fan. Perhaps the power supply itself was faulty from the get go and it only took a matter of time before it failed completely.

Even more so, if you're having trouble with your computer shutting down and restarting itself at random times, that could be another indicator that your power supply is going bad. And since your motherboard, CPU, disk drives, etc. all work off of the power supply, it's not a good idea to take a chance on it getting any better. If you do, you'll just have more trouble down the road. Don't worry though, replacing a power supply is rather easy to do and it's fairly cost friendly. So, if your computer is experiencing any of the symptoms I mentioned above, you'll want to check into getting a new power supply. It's a small price to pay for the safety of your computer!

Absolutely AWESOME  Noise-Cancelling Headphones!

Kill Background Noise By Flipping A Switch! Really!

Outstanding Listening Experience!

PLUS Incredible Sound And Amazing Comfort!

Just Wait Till You Feast Your Ears On This!

Psst - Hey, wanna really (really) great set of headphones? Maybe the best you've ever tried? We just got an absolutely amazing deal on a brand new product! We have the new Sentry Noise Cancelling Headphones and these are going to absolutely blow you away!

Let's get right to it and talk about the noise cancelling part. Now, I've seen noise cancelling headphones go well beyond the $100 mark, so yeah, I was a little skeptical too. I mean, could these be for real? So, I put them on and did some testing.

I started by hooking up to my iPod (any MP3 player, stereo, CD player, etc will work with these), and flipped on the noise cancelling. WOW! Really seemed to work good, but was it just my imagination? So, I decided to try these WITHOUT the music and see what happened. I have couple noisy computer fans that I could easily hear with the iPod off, so I stood by those with my headphones on. I hit the Noise Cancelling switch, and just like that the fan sound disappeared! I strained to hear it, but it really was gone! I turned off the noise cancelling and I could easily hear it again, back on, it's GONE! WOW!! Talk about impressive! These work GREAT!

Can you imagine how cool these are going to be? Just a quick flip of the noise-cancelling switch gets rid of droning, background noise! Just think about how fantastic these are going to be on your next plane trip - no more cranking the volume all the way up just to hear over the engines! Oh, and what about while working out? Wouldn't it be great to cancel out the sound of the treadmill, bike ect? What about if you're just in a noisy room? A flip of the switch and it's just you and your music!

Oh, and think about it - since you don't have to crank up the volume to overcome background noise, these could literally save your hearing!

OK, the noise cancelling part is absolutely fantastic, but just wait till you slip these over your ears! Amazingly comfortable! In fact, my wife had a set of Bose headphones (that cost 2X as much and weren't noise-cancelling), and actually switched to these! Not just for the noise-cancelling, but mostly because these were SO MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE! They feature really soft padding, a incredibly well designed and comfortable headband, PLUS the ear pieces on both sides actually swivel around - a perfect fit every time! Even if you don't need the noise-cancelling part, these are well worth it just for the comfort!

PLUS, they sound absolutely amazing! You are in for a real treat first time you put these on! You're going to absolutely LOVE the full range of sound you get to experience! The lows are rich and the highs crisp and sharp! Close your eyes and you'll feel like you're completely engulfed in music! You may even notice instruments in your songs you never knew where there! The range is really incredible!

Now, if you've shopped for noise cancelling headphones before, you know they can be pricey. Bose can go for $350, Sony for $400, JVC is a bargain and can be found for $90, Monster gets $300 - but wait till you see your deal!

Your price? Get this, you can get these for just $28.97 and US shipping is FREE! Let me tell ya, for that kind of money you just can't go wrong! I know it sounds too good to be true, but just wait till you try 'em! You'll be a believer too! Check 'em out:

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4921

PS - Don't spend hundreds on a set of noise-cancelling headphones - you've gotta give these a try! Super comfortable, sound great, and they cancel out background noise with the flip of a switch! Get your today!

Q:
When I place an order with your company, I usually do it right from the newsletter in my e-mail, but I sometimes have trouble with it if I'm trying to order more than one thing. It's hard to navigate back and forth between the two. Is there an easier way to do it? Please help!

A:
I'm really glad you asked this, because I know you're not the only one having this problem. All of us here at WorldStart get phone calls and e-mails all day long about this very thing. And after researching the problem a little bit, I can definitely see where you're all coming from. We know that most of you get our newsletters right in your e-mail Inbox everyday and a lot of you place your orders from there. (If you don't get them in your e-mail, chances are, you view them through our Newsletter Reader, which works pretty much the same way). So, if you're having the same trouble as the person who asked today's question, please read on!

I have three suggestions for you today that may make your ordering experience with WorldStart just a tad bit easier (I hope so anyway!) Two of them have to do with ordering straight from our newsletter and the other is an easy way you can do it on our actual Web site. Okay, let's check them out!

1.) Here's the first scenario: You just got your morning coffee, you log on to your computer, check your e-mail and the first one you open is WorldStart's Computer Tips newsletter. You look through the whole thing and you see that two of our items look very interesting. You read through the advertisements for them one more time and you decide you better buy them before they're gone. So, to place your order for the first one, you click on the item's link and add it to your cart. But wait, what do you do about the second item? How can you get that onto the same order with the other one? Well, allow me to walk you through the process!

Let's start from the very beginning. To order the first item, you click on its link and our shopping cart page opens. Next, click on the Add to Cart button. That page will show you the item you want, the quantity and the price. Now, to order the second item, click on the Continue Shopping button. That will take you to our Software Store page, but all you have to do is go back to our newsletter in your e-mail and find the other item you want to buy. Then just click on its link and hit the Add to Cart button again. That item will then be added along with the first one and your new total price will show up. If you're done, you can then just click on the Checkout button to enter in your payment information. Or, if you want to continue shopping, just go back to the newsletter and add anything else you want to your cart. In the end, all of your items will be grouped together on the same order. Cool, huh?!

2.) If, for some reason, you don't like the above method, you can try this one. First, go ahead and open our newsletter in your e-mail and just leave it there. Next, open up a browser window. When you do that, you will have two windows open: your e-mail window and a browser window. (If you get your e-mail through your Web browser, you'll just need to have two browser windows open at the same time). In your browser, type in www.worldstart.com to go to our Web site. Once you're there, click on the Software Store tab. You'll then see all of our items for sale and the different categories you can choose from. Now, leave that page open and go back to your e-mail where you can see our newsletter.

Again, you want to purchase two of our items, so go ahead and click on the link for the first one and click on the Add to Cart button. Next, hit the Continue Shopping button. Now, instead of going back to your e-mail for the second item, you can just go to the top of that page and click on the Newsletters tab. On the next page, click on the first link you see for the Computer Tips newsletter. You can then scroll through that to find the next item you want to purchase. Then just click on its link and hit the Add to Cart button again. That will add the second item to your order and your new total price will show up. Again, if you want to continue shopping, you can do the exact same thing or if you're done, just hit the Checkout button to enter in your payment information. It's just a little faster way to order if you don't want to go back and forth to your e-mail.

Or, to make it even easier, you can order straight through our Web site. You can look over the newsletter in your e-mail, but when you're ready to order, just go to www.worldstart.com, click on the Newsletters tab and choose the first link for the Computer Tips newsletter. You'll then see the same newsletter that's in your e-mail and you can just do your shopping from there. There are always options!

3.) The last method is still easy, but I'm not sure how many of you will want to deal with it. I will still tell you about it though, because I promised I would! This one allows you to use our product ID numbers to place your order. In our newsletters, we include a link for every item we advertise. At the very end of that link, there is a number (it's usually four digits) and it's the product ID.

It looks something like this: http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=3943.

So, once you find the item you'd like to order, look for that ID number and either memorize it or write it down. Next, go to our Web site and click on the Software Store tab. You'll then need to click on an item just so we can get this started. You can click on any item. Our Software Store page has several items right in the middle and you can click on any one of those to begin. Once that page opens, go up to the URL and find the product ID number. It may be mixed in with everything else or it may be at the very end. Either way, just erase those numbers and type in the one for the item you want to order. That product's page will then open and you can click on the Add to Cart button to begin your order. You can then hit the Continue Shopping button and do the same thing again. Just do that until you have all the items you want in your cart. Lastly, just hit the Checkout button and you'll be all set.

Whew! I know all of that is a little confusing, but I hope I explained it well enough. They're just three different ways you can shop on our Web site. If you're having trouble ordering, just read through these methods carefully and you should be able to get what you want. Our Web site really isn't that hard to work with, you just have to know what to look for. Good luck and as always, thank you for ordering!

MS Office

Cruising Around Your Charts

Do you use MS Excel charts?

If so, do you find it difficult to select just the "right" portion of your chart? Or, maybe you have the opposite problem. You can select portions easily, but you can't seem to select the whole thing. Are you tired of all those mis-clicks?

Whatever your selection problems may be, you just might find a solution if you keep reading!

Let's begin big! To select the entire chart, try Ctrl + a click on the chart.

Now, let's move to the smaller details. To select a specific section of the chart, give this little trick a whirl. First, click anywhere in the chart and then use the arrow keys.

  • Use the up/down arrows to quickly flip between the major components of the charts (such as the chart area, plot area, data series, etc).

  • If you need to get to specific details within an area (maybe a single bar within the data series), switch to the left/right arrows once you've gotten to the correct major area. You'll then find that the selection begins to go into the details of that area.

At last, a way to select chart pieces without a bunch of mis-clicks!

Save Big Bucks On Hard Drive Space!

Ingenious Hard Drive Dock Pays For Itself!

Best Way To Manage Your Extra Files!

Here's one you'll really LOVE! Do you use external hard drives for your backups or extra storage? I know I do - well, I used to anyhow! We just found an item you're really gonna be excited about - it's got to be one of the best ideas I've seen for saving some big bucks in storage! It's a Hard Drive Dock and it's gonna be your new best friend!

First - the problem: External hard drives are stupid expensive. OK, they are getting cheaper, but ever notice how an internal hard drive of the same size will ALWAYS be cheaper then the external version? Sometimes by a huge margin too! Of course, the internal drive doesn't need a fancy case, switches, or power cords like the external drive does, so it should be cheaper. Now, wouldn't it be great if you could use an internal hard drive outside of your computer for backups and extra storage? That's EXACTLY what this does!

This cool little dock lets you use any SATA / eSATA hard drive just by popping it into the dock! (note - that pretty much covers any drive less than 4 years old - and quite a few older than 4 yrs) PLUS it works for regular 3.5" desktop drives AND 2.5" laptop drives - both sizes are covered! So, if you have an old SATA hard drive sitting in a drawer, in an old computer, or whatever - you can get some new life out of it by popping it into this dock! Think of it as an almost free external hard drive!

On the other hand, if you're like me and take a lot of photos (or video), you can just buy a less expensive internal hard drive next time you need more space and plug it into this dock! Heck, I got a 300GB drive the other day on sale for $44! An external drive would have been easily three times that much! When you think of how expensive external hard drives are compared to internal drives, you can see this will easily pay for itself the first time you use it! Besides, since I'm just using these for backups and extra storage, why do I need some slick-looking case? I'll save my money, thank you!

Plus, just wait till you go to store those internal hard drives - you're in for a treat!! You know how those external drives are big, bulky, and just take up way too much space? Well, when you use internal drives with this dock, you can just stick 'em in a drawer like I do! I'm actually thinking about taking apart a couple of my old external drive cases to pull the hard drives for use with this - I'd love to save some space since I feel like I'm getting overrun with external HDs!!!

Worried about speed? Well, this is just as fast as any external hard drive - it's USB 2.0, so it's really, really gonna move your data quickly. You get the same speed and performance of an external HD, without the extra expense and bulk! It's even hot-swappable!

Finally, I think these would be great for getting data off other hard drives to copy over to your computer. My sister's laptop just died, so I took it apart and pulled the little hard drive out of it. Since this works with regular size and laptop drives, I plugged it into this dock and we copied all her old files and photos onto a new computer - now that's cool!

Your cost? Just $39.97 and US shipping is FREE! No, it's not the cheapest thing we've ever offered, BUT I'll bet you'll easily save the price of this dock by the money you'll save buying internal rather than external drives! It really does pays for itself!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4397

PS - Note that there is a limited number of these available, so you'll have to hurry or you'll miss out! Don't get stuck with big, expensive external drives - grab one of these today! You'll love it!

Tip of the Day

Keeping Your Passwords

Did you know that Windows XP Professional, Windows Vista Business and Windows Vista Ultimate all have a built-in feature that allows user accounts to have password expiration dates? And the real problem comes in when your local user account has been set to expire a password, because there's not an obvious place to change the setting. Luckily though, it's very easy to do and if you'd like to learn how, please keep reading! (Note: This problem doesn't exist in the Home editions of Windows).

First, in Windows Vista, open the Local Users and Groups administration panel by typing "lusrmgr.msc" (without the quotes) in to the Start menu search box. Select Users in the left hand pane and then double click on your user account. (In Windows XP, use the Run command instead of the search box).

On the next screen, you'll find the Password Never Expires checkbox.

Make sure the box is checked and you won't be forced to change your password anymore!

Now, if you're using the Home edition of either Windows XP or Vista, you can download the User Manager for XP/Vista Home from XPHomeTools. It’s a shareware software, but you can use the trial version to disable your password expiration. You can download it right here.

I hope this tip has been helpful to you!

February Wallpaper

Here's February's wallpaper. It's all free, so enjoy!

Snowy Deer

This girl was in a group I managed to slip into. It was snowing pretty good and she was curious about me and got within eight feet for this close-up! If this isn't a February shot, I don't know what is!

Moonrise

I shot this just last month in the Valley of Fire State Park, just about an hour from Las Vegas. We were going to another spot just down the road, but couldn't resist stopping for this shot. Timing on one like this is really tough, so dumb luck came to my rescue.

Summer Stream

Here's one that's a little different. It was shot in the Smokies last summer, but instead of giving you the straight shot, I added a soft-focus/dreamy effect to it. I hope you enjoy it!

Enjoy!
