Computer Tips [ Google Lets Everyone See You + Keyboard In Comfort + How To Replace Your Power Supply ] 02/09/09

Quick Tips

Raise Your Keyboard

Today, I have one question for you: "How do you feel about the height of your keyboard?" Okay, so that may seem like a pretty odd question, but believe me, it's legit for this quick tip! I'm talking about the height of your keyboard as it sits on your desk (or wherever you may keep it).

Some of you may know about this, but the rest of you may not, so I thought this would be a neat little entry for today's newsletter. Go ahead and flip your keyboard over on its back. What do you see? Besides some wording, etc., you should see two clips on either side of the keyboard. If you pull those clips out and then set your keyboard back down, you'll notice that it gains a little bit of height. Wow, who knew?!

Those special clips are there to help you get the most comfortable feel for your keyboard. If it's better for your hands to be a little higher as you type, use the clips. If you try it for awhile and decide you don't like it, push the clips back in and your keyboard will then sit flat on your desk once again. It's just an easy way to achieve the best fit for all of your typing needs. Check it out and let me know what you think!

http://imgsrv.worldstart.com/prodimages/wow.gif Your Price? Just $9.97!! http://imgsrv.worldstart.com/prodimages/wow.gif

WOW! I can't wait to share this one with ya! We just scored an amazing deal on my new favorite software - Iolo System Shield! Let me tell ya, this is NOT your run-of-the-mill Internet Security Suite! This does an amazing job of keeping your computer safe from hackers, spyware, and viruses - but read on, because the way this is implemented is far superior to ANY software like this I've used in the past! This really isn't your typical security suite - and you're gonna love it!  I am personally running this software on my computer and it's by far the best I've used! I can't tell you how impressed I am with this - if you value your safety - and system performance, you've got to check this out!

OK, first off, I know you're probably already running anti-virus, anti-spyware, and a firewall - so why do you want this? Well, the thing that impresses me the most with this software suite is the absolute speed it brings to the table! Not just in scanning and such, but the very real lack of system hogging it does. Most suites like this are horrible - they really slow your system to a crawl - not this one! I uninstalled all my previous security software and tired this instead - WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! Frankly, there's a good chance that if you're currently using Norton, Mcafee, ect, when you replace them with this you're going to think you got a new computer! The difference is THAT dramatic! This speed-up alone is enough reason to switch if you ask me!

Next, I absolutely LOVE how this just runs in the background and stays out of the way. So many security programs love to tell you that they are updating your system, getting new virus definitions, scanning, whatever. It's an all day long affair of acknowledging boxes and virtually patting your software on the back, "Good boy - I'm glad you downloaded some updates!" Well, those annoyances are GONE with this - it just works in the background and updates itself when necessary without dozens of boxes telling you all about it - that alone was enough to make me switch! Of course, if it finds something serious, it'll let you know (all customizable too).

Oh, and let me tell you about the anti-virus - you're gonna love this! First, yes it keeps you safe from e-mail viruses, downloads, and monitors in the background - just like everyone's AV does. However, it's the little things that make you fall in love with this! First, don't you just HATE it when you're working on your computer and the stupid AV software comes up and starts a scan? Slows everything down - what a pain! This software will actually make sure the PC has been idle for a specified amount of time before it scans! It waits till you're away before it starts - is that cool or what??? Oh, and it pauses the scan if the PC starts getting used again! Again, this reason alone is enough to change! In fact, my wife read that and said, "Hey - I want this on my computer! My AV always starts scanning when I'm working!" So, one of my 3 installs is going there!

In addition, the anti-virus can be set to scan all files or just dangerous ones (saving time), can be set to scan all kinds of files, has HOURLY updates, can be set to scan when YOU want, and can even be set to exclude certain types of files if you want! Even scan incoming AND outgoing messages if you want - all fully customizable! Oh, and did I mention that it has a year of UNLIMITED tech support too in case you have trouble? WOW!!

Think that's great? Wait till you see the firewall! Blows Windows firewall away (along with every other firewall as far as I'm concerned)! First off, yes, it keeps hackers out - all firewalls do. But this also protects you in other ways. It can monitor when a program is trying to access the internet and send all your personal info to the mothership. That, to me, is HUGE! You never know if that program you just installed is completely trustworthy - so this keeps you safe!

Another fantastic idea that I'm really excited about is the "Idle Lock" - Get this - you can set it so that if you're not using the computer for a specified amount of time (set by you) that the network locks down - nothing can come in or out! I've always said the most secure internet connection is the one that's unplugged when not in use - and this does that!! Oh, and you can also lock your computer down with the press of a mouse if you like - right from the main page!

This can also show you how many attacks it has blocked, block the attacker's IP address for a specified (by you) amount of time, and has a lot of fully customizable options. Truth is though, that the default settings work fine for me! Oh, and again, this seems like it doesn't slow anything down at all - in fact, if you're using a different firewall, this will probably speed things up! I know one thing for sure, I'm installing this on my laptop for travel - it's just too dangerous to surf using wireless networks without it!

Finally, this also includes a fantastic anti-spyware program! Just like the rest of it, it's really fast, stays out of the way, and just does the job! It automatically updates and scanning is a breeze - and fast too! I don't think I've ever seen a spyware can that was soooo fast - and it did a great job! Found a few minor things that it easily fixed!

OK, that's the main stuff, but I also wanted to mention how much easier to use this is than most other security software. First off, I think 90% of the users out there can just install it and forget it - the default settings are really a nice balance and should work well for just about every computer out there. If you want to change stuff, it's really easy to do and the program has an excellent help file that, quite frankly, most users will never ever need!

The price? You're not going to believe this one - we're talking just $9.97 and US shipping is FREE! This is the current version and retails for $49.95 (check Iolo's site - it's not cheap), so $9.97 is an amazing deal. 1 Year worth of support and updates too! Oh, works on XP, Vista, & Win 2000!

Oh, and get this - it's a 3 user license!! So you can install this on up to 3 different computers! That's way less than $4.00 per computer! Grab a friend or two and have them chip in! For less than $4.00 per computer, you just can't go wrong! It's amazing and it's what I am going to be running from now on!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4583

PS - Seriously, this is simply the best Anti-virus, Anti-Spyware, and Firewall software I've ever used and it's going to be on my machine from now on. My computer is soooo much faster now after getting rid of the other bloated software package I had been using - and this just has soooo many great options! Don't miss out!

Computers 101

Q:
Last week, you wrote a tip about a computer's power supply going bad, but you didn't really discuss what we should do if that actually happens to us. Can you please go into that a little more? Thanks!

A:
I surely can! The response I got from that tip was simply amazing. The power supply article ran in last Friday's newsletter and let me tell you, on Monday morning when I got back to work from over the weekend, my e-mail Inbox was filled with questions just like this. I couldn't believe it! So, I knew I had to get this problem taken care of right away and that's exactly what I'm going to do today. If you've ever had trouble with your computer's power supply, you're definitely going to want to tune in to this. It's some very helpful information for every computer user!

To begin, if you think your power supply has gone bad, there are a few things you should check on before you go out and buy a whole new one. For one, make sure your power cord is plugged into both the wall socket and the power supply. Next, check on your power strip or surge protector (if you use one). Is it turned on and does it seem to be working properly? If the problem lies within your power strip, that will be a lot easier to fix than replacing your whole power supply. Lastly, make sure your power supply is actually turned on. It should have an On/Off switch, so just double check to ensure it's powered up. Now, if after checking out all of those things, you still think your power supply is faulty, continue reading to see what you can do next.

If your power supply has gone bad, you'll obviously need to replace it. It's a pretty easy procedure, so you should be able to do it on your own, but if you don't feel comfortable with it, please find some help. Before you do anything, you'll need to remove all of the plugs, cables, etc. that are attached to your computer tower. You don't want any power flowing through your system while you're doing that, so make sure everything is unplugged. Next, go ahead and open up your computer case. There are several different cases, so I can't tell you exactly how to take yours off, but you should just need to undo a couple screws and the outside panel should slide off for you.

Once you have your case open, you'll need to locate the power supply. It's basically a metal box with several colored wires that hook up to the motherboard and some of your computer's other components. Next, unhook all the connectors that run to those components inside your unit. You don't need to tug very hard on them, as they usually come out pretty easily. You may have to work a little harder on some, but they should all disconnect with little effort. It's also a good idea to take notes of all the components you disconnect so that you can reconnect them quicker when you're installing your new power supply.

Once everything's unhooked, you'll need to remove the power supply from your PC's case. It's usually put in place with mounting screws, so just remove those and slide the unit out. If any of the other components are in your way, you may need to remove those as well, but make sure you keep the screws lined up so that you can easily reattach everything later on. Also, you do not need to use much force when taking the power supply out. Just gently slide it out of its position.

Now, the next thing you need to focus on is purchasing a new power supply. Most power supplies these days are the ATX version, but it mainly depends on how old your computer is. For example, if your computer still has an AT style power supply, that's rather old and you may want to think about replacing your whole computer, instead of just the power supply. On the other hand, if you have an ATX motherboard plug and an ATX connector to your power supply, you'll be good to go. If you're not sure what kind to buy, refer to your computer's user manual for help. It should tell you how many watts you need, but again, that also depends on what you use your computer for. If you're big into gaming, etc., you may want to add a little wattage to your new power supply. A good rule to go by is to check the wattage your current power supply has and then increase it by 100 or 200 watts to be safe.

Power supplies aren't really known by brand names, but you can always search for them with your favorite search engine to learn a little more about them before you actually purchase one. I know Tiger Direct is a good name if you want to order yours online. Otherwise, power supplies are available at most electronics stores.

Okay, let's take a breather. I know all of this is quite a bit to take in, so I'm going to stop here for today. I don't want to overwhelm you too much with all this power supply talk, so we'll just finish up tomorrow. We'll go over how to install your new power supply and how to get your computer back up and running like it should be! So, go ahead, read through this a couple times and I'll meet you right back here tomorrow to finish. See ya!

MS Office

Remove and Copy Toolbar Buttons

Are you an MS Office user who likes to customize your workspace?

Specifically, do you do a lot of toolbar customizing?

(Obviously, most of the 2007 programs don't have toolbars, so this doesn't apply to those. However, Outlook and Publisher 2007 still use the old menu and toolbar system and it does work for them).

Here are a couple of quick tricks for you. These are anytime customizations that may help you along your way.

  • To copy a toolbar button, press Ctrl + Alt while dragging the button to a new location.

  • To remove a toolbar button, press the Alt key while dragging the button into the document. When you release the mouse button, you'll find that it disappears. (A great way to make extra space is by getting rid of the things you just don't use).

Yep, that's right. Experienced toolbar customizers are used to opening the Customize window to accomplish that stuff, but it's not needed for these tricks.

Just a couple extra tips for making your work environment all yours!

Knock Out Background Noise With The Flip Of A Switch!

You'll LOVE These Noise-Cancelling Headphones!

Outstanding Listening Experience!

PLUS Incredible Sound And Amazing Comfort!

Just Wait Till You Feast Your Ears On This!

WOW!! These were HUGE on Friday and over the weekend! Talk about a home-run - Thank YOU to everyone who ordered! If you missed out, get in on all the excitement and grab yourself a pair of these! You'll be blown away! Check this out:

Psst - Hey, wanna really (really) great set of headphones? Maybe the best you've ever tried? We just got an absolutely amazing deal on a brand new product! We have the new Sentry Noise Cancelling Headphones and these are going to absolutely blow you away!

Let's get right to it and talk about the noise cancelling part. Now, I've seen noise cancelling headphones go well beyond the $100 mark, so yeah, I was a little skeptical too. I mean, could these be for real? So, I put them on and did some testing.

I started by hooking up to my iPod (any MP3 player, stereo, CD player, etc will work with these), and flipped on the noise cancelling. WOW! Really seemed to work good, but was it just my imagination? So, I decided to try these WITHOUT the music and see what happened. I have couple noisy computer fans that I could easily hear with the iPod off, so I stood by those with my headphones on. I hit the Noise Cancelling switch, and just like that the fan sound disappeared! I strained to hear it, but it really was gone! I turned off the noise cancelling and I could easily hear it again, back on, it's GONE! WOW!! Talk about impressive! These work GREAT!

Can you imagine how cool these are going to be? Just a quick flip of the noise-cancelling switch gets rid of droning, background noise! Just think about how fantastic these are going to be on your next plane trip - no more cranking the volume all the way up just to hear over the engines! Oh, and what about while working out? Wouldn't it be great to cancel out the sound of the treadmill, bike ect? What about if you're just in a noisy room? A flip of the switch and it's just you and your music!

Oh, and think about it - since you don't have to crank up the volume to overcome background noise, these could literally save your hearing!

OK, the noise cancelling part is absolutely fantastic, but just wait till you slip these over your ears! Amazingly comfortable! In fact, my wife had a set of Bose headphones (that cost 2X as much and weren't noise-cancelling), and actually switched to these! Not just for the noise-cancelling, but mostly because these were SO MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE! They feature really soft padding, a incredibly well designed and comfortable headband, PLUS the ear pieces on both sides actually swivel around - a perfect fit every time! Even if you don't need the noise-cancelling part, these are well worth it just for the comfort!

PLUS, they sound absolutely amazing! You are in for a real treat first time you put these on! You're going to absolutely LOVE the full range of sound you get to experience! The lows are rich and the highs crisp and sharp! Close your eyes and you'll feel like you're completely engulfed in music! You may even notice instruments in your songs you never knew where there! The range is really incredible!

Now, if you've shopped for noise cancelling headphones before, you know they can be pricey. Bose can go for $350, Sony for $400, JVC is a bargain and can be found for $90, Monster gets $300 - but wait till you see your deal!

Your price? Get this, you can get these for just $28.97 and US shipping is FREE! Let me tell ya, for that kind of money you just can't go wrong! I know it sounds too good to be true, but just wait till you try 'em! You'll be a believer too! Check 'em out:

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4921

PS - Don't spend hundreds on a set of noise-cancelling headphones - you've gotta give these a try! Super comfortable, sound great, and they cancel out background noise with the flip of a switch! Get your today!

Tip of the Day

Google Privacy Concerns

Ever since the Google Street View program was released in May 2007, many people have been complaining about the privacy issues associated with it. Apart from seeing their houses on Google's Web site, people have reported seeing themselves on the Internet as well. Now, I'd say that's taking it a bit too far. If you agree, here’s how you can keep your home and yourself a little more private!

1.) If you don’t want your house to show up in the Google Street View program because of privacy issues, all you have to do is click on the Report a Concern button, shown below.

2.) Next, choose Privacy Concerns for the reason why you don’t want the image shown in Street View.

3.) Now, describe why you don’t want the image in Street View and then enter in your e-mail address.

4.) Next, move the Street View image until the red rectangle is centered over your property.

That's it! Google will then review your concerns and delete the image if they agree with you. Yes!

Thanks-O-Meter

I truly believe that kindness triggers more kindness. An excellent example of that happened to me recently. My roommate and I were on our way to an appointment with her doctor. We got in the car and were all set to go when we remembered we left the cookies we made for her dad in the house. So, she tries to back into the drive way, but misses it and hits a snowdrift in our yard. We try to pull back out, but we were stuck! Then one of our neighbors came out of his house to walk his dogs and sees that we're in trouble. He takes his dogs back in the house, grabs his shovel and dashes across the street to help us.

Thanks to his kindness, we were able to get to the doctor’s office on time and we arrived in enough time to help an elderly woman get past the icy walkway. We helped her into the office and she was so grateful that someone would help her, she couldn’t stop smiling. Once she was settled in to wait on the doctor, I noticed she was seated across from a little girl with the flu who just looked miserable. The woman we helped struck up a conversation with her, got her to smile and took her mind off being sick.

With all the bad news in the world these days, it was so refreshing to find this Web site. Thanks-O-Meter celebrates those every day events of kindness, charity and anything that deserves a thank you!

It works by you selecting a thank you, choosing how it made you feel and then sharing your story. For my story, I chose "For Being Great Neighbors" and it made me feel lucky and grateful. Then I selected to share my story. It was hard to keep it within the 500 character limit, but I managed to do it.

Don’t have anything to share right now? Well, that’s no problem! You can enjoy all the stories everyone else has submitted on the site. Just click on the Stories tab at the top of the page. Then select an emotion and it will give you a listing of stories you can read that were tagged with that particular emotion.

This Web site has a wonderful concept and I hope you’ll not only share your own personal stories, but enjoy the others as well. Check it out today!

I shot this just last month in the Valley of Fire State Park, just about an hour from Las Vegas. We were going to another spot just down the road, but couldn't resist stopping for this shot. Timing on one like this is really tough, so dumb luck came to my rescue.

Summer Stream

Here's one that's a little different. It was shot in the Smokies last summer, but instead of giving you the straight shot, I added a soft-focus/dreamy effect to it. I hope you enjoy it!
