Computer Tips [ Dangerous Windows Drivers? + Running XP And Vista On The Same Computer + How To Use Your Keyboard As A Mouse + Photo Naming Trick ] 02/03/09

Quick Tips

Driver Signing

When you're installing a new piece of software on your computer, do you ever get an error message that says something about Windows Logo testing? I'm sure it's happened to you once, if not several times, but if you're not sure what the whole logo testing thing is, read here before you continue on. Once that's understood, allow me to explain what driver signing is and what it has to do with the Windows Logo testing.

The driver signing feature in Windows XP allows you to make sure the drivers you're installing for any new program, device, etc. are actually compatible with Windows. To do that, right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop and choose Properties. Click on the Hardware tab and then the Driver Signing button. You'll then see a little explanation of the Windows Logo testing at the top as well.

Next, you can choose how you want your computer to notify you about the testing. You can either have your computer ignore it and not notify you at all, you can choose to be warned with a prompt each time it comes into play or you can block it, which will tell your computer to never install an unsigned driver. Once you've made your choice, just check the button next to it and then click OK twice. From now on, your computer will obey your Windows Logo testing preferences and that makes everything so much easier!

Have A High Definition TV?6' GoldX Plus Series HDMI to HDMI Cable

It's Not REALLY High Def Unless You're Using An HDMI Cable!

Discover How Incredible Your HDTV Can Really Look!

Other Cables Can't Deliver True High Definition - You MUST Use An HDMI Cable!

And We Have A Gold-Plated Deal For You Today!

Wanna here a sad little story that repeats itself all the time? People go out and buy an amazing new HD TV (Plasma, LCD, DLP ect) and when they plug it in and hook it up, they discover that, much to their dismay, the picture, well, sort of sucks. Why? It's all the in cables!

Unless you are connecting your DVD, Cable Box, Satellite Dish, Bluray, ect to your TV via an HDMI cable, you're just not getting the quality you paid for. Period. Other cables simply can't provide the bandwidth you need to get HD video to your TV at full resoultion. It's a shame to spend hundreds - or thousands - on a top notch TV, only to plug it in with crappy cables.

I can tell you from experience you'll be blown away at what a difference the right cable can make in your picture! I've used 'em all - from the basic yellow/red/white AV cables, to "S" video, then Component Video then to HDMI - and it gets better each time (with HDMI being kind of the hill)! Only problem is, HDMI cables can be crazy expensive at the big box stores - $50, $100, even $200!!

Want an affordable HDMI cable? We have 'em for you! These fantastic HDMI cables are going to upgrade your HD TV's picture instantly! We're talking 24K gold plated connectors, copper braided outer shield, and a design that's going to get you an amazingly clean, crisp picture!

Bottom line: If you've got an HD TV and you're not using an HDMI cable, you're not watching HiDef TV - you're really not.

Want to grab a cable? Well, this 6 foot HDMI cable is just $16.97 and US shipping is FREE! Anyone with an HDTV who's not using a cable is like a guy who won't drive his Ferrari past 25MPH! Grab one today!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4865

PS - Obviously, make sure your TV has HDMI inputs (any current HDTV will) and make sure whatever components you're plugging in do as well (again, any newer equipment will).

Computers 101

Q:
I'm running a dual boot system with both Windows Vista and Windows XP. I would like the default setting to be Vista, but I can't figure out how to do that. Can you please help?

A:
Well, as a matter of fact, I can! This question is perfect for anyone out there who is running a dual boot setup on their computer. Now, I'm talking about a dual boot between Windows Vista and Windows XP. If that's the setup you have, are you having trouble getting the Vista operating system to come up as your default system? Maybe you want to learn how to use Windows Vista, but you want to keep XP around too, just in case you run into some problems with Vista, etc.

If that sounds like your situation, make sure you keep reading to find out how you can easily change your default settings to be exactly the way you want them!

To do so, just follow these quick instructions:

1.) With your Windows Vista operating system turned on, right click on the Computer icon on your desktop and choose Properties.

2.) Click on Advanced System Settings.

3.) Next, under the Startup and Recovery section, click on the Settings button.

4.) Finally, select the operating system you want to be your default (in this case, Microsoft Windows Vista).

That's all there is to it! Now, you could use the bcdedit command from the command line to do the same thing, but trust me, this way is much easier. Once you have the operating system of your choice selected, just hit OK and you'll be all set!

You can then shut down your computer and restart it. Your new default operating system should start right up for you and you can then go back to happy computer land. Give it a try today!

MS Office

Which To-Do First?

If you use the To-Do Bar, you may not realize it, but moving an item to another location in the list doesn't require you to open it, reset the due date and then save it.

Oh no. It's so much easier than that!

To move an item on your To-Do list, all that's needed is a simple drag and drop.

If you click on an item and begin to drag it, you'll find that a horizontal line will move with your mouse pointer.

That lets you know exactly where it will be dropped when you release the mouse button. It basically takes the guess work out of the relocation.

It certainly can't get any easier to prioritize your list!

Ever Need To Transfer A File?Memorex TravelSync Portable Transfer Device

Ever Wish There Was A Fast Way To Do It?

Wouldn't It Be Great If You Could Just Do A Direct Transfer-

And NOT Use A Computer?

YOU CAN!

Amazing Device Allows You To Transfer Files Without A Computer!

Transfer Between Memory Cards, External HDs, Flash Drive, MP3 Players, Digital Cameras, And MORE!

PLUS Save 74% By Getting It From US Today!!! WOW!!

I tell ya, we can't keep up with the orders for this one! We're going one more day with the deal - everyone seems to want one (or two) of these! If you've been missing out, you've got to check out what all the excitement is about!

Again, this is an absolutely amazing deal on a little gadget from Memorex called a TravelSync that's going to change the way you deal with your files forever! This ingenious little gadget allows you to effortlessly transfer data from one USB device to another - and get this - you do it without any computer involved! Really!

First, have you ever ran out of memory on your digital camera's card? Sure, everyone's taken that train to frustrationville! Wouldn't be fantastic if you could simply transfer your pictures to a USB flash drive and empty that card without the hassle of getting a computer out? Am I crazy? Nope -  With this handy gadget, you just plug your camera in on one side, then stick in a flash drive on the other side!  Press a button and your images are magically transferred right from your camera to the flash drive - no computer necessary! Then, just clear your card and keep on shooting (you can even have this device clear your card after you're done if you like!)!

Memorex TravelSync Portable Transfer Device

Ooohh, yeah - here's one that happens ALL the time - and we've all been there! Have you ever needed a copy of a file someone else has? You know, maybe you just need a copy of a document, maybe you want a quick copy of a photo, maybe a favorite song - whatever. It may be on a friend's flash drive, camera, MP3 player - you name it, but you want that file!

Well, with this you just plug in the device that has the file on one side (could be a flash drive camera, external HD, memory card, ect) then select the file you want from the list. Next, plug in your flash drive (or whatever USB storage you prefer) into the other side and a couple button presses later you have the file! Seriously - No booting up the computer, no opening up the flash drive, no copying the file over to the desktop, no opening up the other flash drive, no copying to the new flash drive, no shutting down! Once you go the direct copy route with this little guy, you'll never go back!!

OK, want another example? What about this - do you have a external hard drive for backups or extra storage? With this, you could actually transfer your photos, files, music, ect directly to your hard drive from your camera (flash drive, memory card, MP3 player) without ever booting up your computer! Talk about a time saver (and a brilliant way to do quick backups)!

Here's The Bottom Line - If you have USB devices that store data (memory cards, flash drives, digital cameras, MP3 players, external hard drives, ect) this can transfer that data from one device to another with NO computer necessary! This is such an ingenious idea! I don't know how many times I just needed a copy of a file and had to mess around with my computer to do all the copying! This makes it easy!

PLUS, it's incredibly easy to use! Most operations are just a couple button pushes away from being done! Even lets you copy everything or selected files - and the LCD screen makes it simple!

This is really one of those devices that once you have it, you'll wonder how you lived without it!

How much do these go for?  You won't believe your price, but first I gotta tell you "their" prices! Get this - right this second Memorex has these listed on their site for $50 and Amazon is at $48.99! Looking around, I couldn't find ANYONE less than $41 for these things - and pretty much everyone was charging shipping on top of it! And frankly, it's really worth the money they're asking too - it's that good. But....

Your cost is absolutely unbelievable! We're talking just $12.97 and US shipping is FREE! That's not a typo - $12.97 gets you this absolutely amazing, incredibly handy $50 device!! RUN to the site and get this while you can! One of the handiest gadgets we've ever offered!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4890

PS - As you can imagine, quantities on this are limited and we're thinking that, yeah, these are gonna sell pretty quick! Get to the site before they gone - you don't want to WISH you had one later!

STOP RIGHT THERE!

The Shocking Truth About Your Hard Drive!

Don't Throw Out That Old Hard Drive!!

Don't Give Away Your Old Computer!

You Gotta Read This - It'll Scare The Heck Outta Ya!

News Flash!

Recent studies show that 74% of hard drives sold, given away, or thrown out (in the computer or out) contain data that can be easily read and recovered - and 36% of those hard drives had even been reformatted. You absolutely, positively, have to permanently get that data off of there!!

Do you have an old computer you're thinking about giving away? Maybe an old hard drive that needs to be thrown out? Well, if you do, you MUST GET THAT DATA OFF THERE!!!!

Well, we have some really easy to use software that will keep you safe called DriveScrubber. Just pop the CD into your computer (or make a floppy if you still have a drive for one of those) and reboot. Even if you can't boot to Windows, you can still erase that drive with this software!

Think about it - you wouldn't toss paperwork with credit card, bank, or social security numbers in the trash without shredding the heck out of 'em would you? Of course not! However, day in and day out, people toss out old computers and think that just deleting or formatting a drive is going to get rid of all the personal info they had on it - not a chance!

WARNING - When you delete a file, it's not really gone. You might want to read that last sentence again because it's really important. The area where the file lives on your hard drive simply gets tagged as free space, but until it's overwritten, that data is VERY recoverable. I formatted a test drive and ran recovery software on it awhile ago just to see what would happen. Nearly EVERYTHING was easily recoverable! No problem at all!

If you've ever used your computer to check on your banking, buy a product online, or anything that involves your personal info, then that info might be easily available when you get rid of your old hardware! Yikes!

Don't think it can happen to you? Well, two MIT students did a study. They went and purchased 158 used hard drives for less than $1000 from a web swap-meet type site. When they went through the drives, they found over 5,000 credit card numbers, medical reports, lots of personal and corporate financial information, and gigs of personal e-mail. And get this - 60% of the drives had been formatted!!!

There are people who look for old computers at the curb or in the dumpster just to pull info off the hard drive or sell the drives to others! Plus, if you just "donate" an old computer you have no idea what really is going to happen to it! If this doesn't scare the heck out of you, then you shouldn't be using a computer!

Once you insert the Drive Scrubber disk, your computer will boot to the CD or the floppy, and has an easy to use interface that makes wiping a drive a snap. Just select the drive and select the "erase" button. ALL the info on the drive will be gone - permanently and forever! You can still reformat the drive and install Windows again once this is done - but any info you had on the drive will be completely gone. No worries about anyone ever using your hard drive or old computer to steal you personal info! It's great!

I personally have a couple of old hard drives sitting around that I just didn't want to throw out. Now I'll be able to completely erase them and toss them into the trash knowing that no one will EVER be able to recover any of my personal data from that drive.

Your cost for all this protection? Just $6.97 and US shipping is FREE! Sure, it's not a program that you'll use every day, but everyone with a computer WILL need to use it someday! For this kind of money, it's insane not to be safe. Check it out:

Adding a Graphic to your Signature

Let me see a show of hands. How many of you have your very own e-mail signature? You know, you go through a few steps and create a little signature that shows up at the bottom of all the e-mails you send out. That's all good and well, but how would you like to add a graphic to your signature? Wouldn't that be awesome?! Well, that's very easy to do and if you check out the tip we're featuring on our homepage today, you'll learn exactly how to do it. It's just something you can do to add a little spice to your sig file. Give it a try!

Think Exist

So, tell me, are you a big fan of quotes? Do you like to read a new quote everyday to see how it relates to what you're going through in your life? That's my favorite thing about quotes, because they often speak right to your heart. Well, if you've been on the hunt for a great quotes Web site, look no further! The cool site we're showcasing on our homepage today is exactly what you've been waiting for, I'm just sure of it. It's called Think Exist and it's one of the best quote sites I've ever seen. Tip of the Day

Keyboard + Mouse in Vista

One of the accessibility features in Windows Vista is called Mouse Keys and it allows you to control your mouse movement with the number pad on your keyboard. By doing so, you can move the mouse pointer a single pixel at a time if you want. I mean, it doesn't get any more precise than that. Let's check it out!

To work with Mouse Keys, go to Start, Control Panel and click on the Ease of Access link.

Next, click on "Change how your mouse works."

Then click on "Set up Mouse Keys."

Now, you can configure the Mouse Keys to your liking, with the most important setting being "Turn on Mouse Keys." Once you've turned on the option, you can toggle Mouse Keys on and off with Alt + Shift + Num Lock.

Once it's been activated, you can use the arrows on the number pad to move your mouse. How cool is that?!

Today's Feature

Naming Your Photos

Here's a quick and easy one for you today! Did you know that you can make your image files a lot easier to find by simply giving them names? Well, let's check out what I mean!

For instance, rather than "Image403.jpg," assign a name like "090203-too_much_fun.jpg." Notice that the 09 is the year, 02 is the month and 03 is the day. By putting the year first, it will sort your pictures according to the year. Your photos will be a lot easier to keep track of that way!

Also, it's best to assign names when the pictures are fresh out of your camera, so start doing it today!

This girl was in a group I managed to slip into. It was snowing pretty good and she was curious about me and got within eight feet for this close-up! If this isn't a February shot, I don't know what is!

Moonrise

I shot this just last month in the Valley of Fire State Park, just about an hour from Las Vegas. We were going to another spot just down the road, but couldn't resist stopping for this shot. Timing on one like this is really tough, so dumb luck came to my rescue.

Summer Stream

Here's one that's a little different. It was shot in the Smokies last summer, but instead of giving you the straight shot, I added a soft-focus/dreamy effect to it. I hope you enjoy it!
