Quick Tips

Wireless Hub

You've heard of a hub before, right? Well, in case you haven't, a hub is a device you can use with your computer to hook up other devices and gadgets you may use (such as a keyboard, a mouse, a digital camera, a printer, etc). The most common form of a hub is in a USB format. With that, you simply plug the hub into one of your USB ports and the rest of the devices are hooked into that, which gives them power to work.

So, now that you know all about hubs, what about a wireless hub? Is there such a thing? There sure is and it's very convenient! If you have a wireless network set up in your home or office, you can use a wireless hub to connect all the other devices you need to use. A wireless hub is the perfect way to link everything together with all the computers you use within your network. Along with being inexpensive, wireless hubs are also very easy to set up and configure, which is always a bonus!

The only thing you can't share on a wireless hub is an Internet connection. That's often misunderstood by several people. Even though you have a hub set up on your wireless network, only one computer can access the Internet. If you wanted to share the Internet connection, you would have to purchase a router. Happy hubbing, my friends!

Your Current Surge Protector Isn't Enough!

Your Computer IS At Risk Right Now!

Amazing New Surge Protector Keeps You Safe From:

Power Line Surges

Network Cable Surges

Phone Line Surges

Incredible EMI/RFI Noise Filters Can Make Your Computer Last Longer!

Smart Plug Placement Lets You Use Large AC Adapters Too!

8-Outle Surge Protector with Network ProtectionSoooooo, how's your surge protector? Is your computer really safe? Ya sure about that? It may not be as safe as you think!

OK, it's no secret that you absolutely, positively MUST have your computer connected to a GOOD surge protector (and no, that $5 power strip doesn't qualify)! However, you ALSO have to protect EVERY line going into your computer that's coming from the outside world! Just having your computer plugged into a surge protector isn't enough! You MUST protect phone AND network lines too!

Well, we just found an amazing surge protector that makes it easy to stay safe! It's an 8 Outlet Surge Protector With Network Pass-Through that's designed with computer users in mind! Just plug everything into this - power cords, network cables, and even phone lines - and you NEVER HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT SURGES AGAIN!!!

First off, when it comes to standard surge protection from your wall plugs, THIS really has you covered! It includes a whoppin' 8 plugs, so your computer, monitor, printer, external hard drive, router - EVERYTHING can be plugged in and protected from surges! Talk about a one-stop shop!

Oh, and it doesn't just stop surges either - this actually "filters" the power coming through it, giving your equipment a nice, steady stream of clean, consistent juice! Why do you care?

Remember when you had an antenna TV and would run the vacuum cleaner? Remember all those funky lines that showed up on the screen? That's an amplified version of the "noise" that randomly tends to be in electrical lines all the time. Sure, you could still see the TV, but it wasn't working quite right, ya know? You don't want your computer getting THAT kind of power - ever. This takes care of it, automatically, and helps extend your computer's life! Talk about paying for itself! WOW!

Even better - and maybe even more important - this protects from surges over network cables! I know, you're probably wondering, "Why do I need to protect my network cable from surges?" Read on!

Ask yourself this - if you have a DSL or Cable modem, where does the line come into your home or office from? Outside right? Well, aren't your cable and phone lines subjected to the same severe weather and conditions as your power lines? It's absolutely CRAZY not to protect those lines from surges!

In my experience, MORE computers get fried from phone line and network cable surges than power surges (not to mention $100 routers getting blown all the time)! See, your computer's power supply is a voltage regulator and can actually help tame some minor surges coming from your power outlets, but there's nothing - I repeat NOTHING - stopping a surge from coming in via your DSL, Cable Modem, or Phone Line. Absolutely nothing stands in the way! In my opinion, if you're not running a surge protector on EVERY phone or network cable connected to your computer, then you might as well not be running anything at all. If you're not going to be completely protected, why even bother?

The people who designed this fantastic surge protector knew that as well, so this includes a pass-through for BOTH phone and network cables! For example, if you connect via Cable or DSL, you simply plug your incoming line into this from the wall and the other end into your router - easy enough. In a matter of seconds, you've protected EVERY computer connected to your router from a wildly dangerous - and extremely common - source of surges!

PLUS, this features another must-have feature for every computer user - it has a light that shows if the surge circuit is working or not! In the unlikely event this gets hit with a surge powerful enough to destroy the surge protection circuit, it will let you know it's no longer working! Most surge protectors never give you an indication of any kind that they aren't working anymore - the one you have connected to your computer right this minute might be blown and you'd have no way to know! Don't end up with a fried computer! KNOW your surge protector is working!

Not only does this cover all the bases, it's design is absolutely ingenious! It has 5 "standard" plugs, and 3 that are spaced far enough apart to accommodate those bulky AC adapters! It also features safety covers so unused plugs aren't exposed (great idea, and a must if you have kids), has a light to indicate that it's properly grounded, and a 6 foot power cord! Awesome!

Your cost? Just $24.97 and US shipping is FREE! Yeah, I know, you can go to the grocery store and buy a 3 pack of those strip protectors for $12, but you and I both know they aren't going give you the protection you NEED. Don't risk your computer - and everything connected to it - with a cheap surge protector. Think of it this way - getting this quality surge protector is a LOT cheaper than replacing your computer when your cheapie protector lets it get zapped! Grab THIS today, and never worry about it again!

PS - Warning!! There is only a small quantity of these available, so make sure you get to the site as early as you can! No more are available once these are gone, and we don't see surge protectors like this very often! RUN to the site and get one while you can!

WOW! I can't wait to share this one with ya! We just scored an amazing deal on my new favorite software - Iolo System Shield! Let me tell ya, this is NOT your run-of-the-mill Internet Security Suite! This does an amazing job of keeping your computer safe from hackers, spyware, and viruses - but read on, because the way this is implemented is far superior to ANY software like this I've used in the past! This really isn't your typical security suite - and you're gonna love it!  I am personally running this software on my computer and it's by far the best I've used! I can't tell you how impressed I am with this - if you value your safety - and system performance, you've got to check this out!

OK, first off, I know you're probably already running anti-virus, anti-spyware, and a firewall - so why do you want this? Well, the thing that impresses me the most with this software suite is the absolute speed it brings to the table! Not just in scanning and such, but the very real lack of system hogging it does. Most suites like this are horrible - they really slow your system to a crawl - not this one! I uninstalled all my previous security software and tired this instead - WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! Frankly, there's a good chance that if you're currently using Norton, Mcafee, ect, when you replace them with this you're going to think you got a new computer! The difference is THAT dramatic! This speed-up alone is enough reason to switch if you ask me!

Next, I absolutely LOVE how this just runs in the background and stays out of the way. So many security programs love to tell you that they are updating your system, getting new virus definitions, scanning, whatever. It's an all day long affair of acknowledging boxes and virtually patting your software on the back, "Good boy - I'm glad you downloaded some updates!" Well, those annoyances are GONE with this - it just works in the background and updates itself when necessary without dozens of boxes telling you all about it - that alone was enough to make me switch! Of course, if it finds something serious, it'll let you know (all customizable too).

Oh, and let me tell you about the anti-virus - you're gonna love this! First, yes it keeps you safe from e-mail viruses, downloads, and monitors in the background - just like everyone's AV does. However, it's the little things that make you fall in love with this! First, don't you just HATE it when you're working on your computer and the stupid AV software comes up and starts a scan? Slows everything down - what a pain! This software will actually make sure the PC has been idle for a specified amount of time before it scans! It waits till you're away before it starts - is that cool or what??? Oh, and it pauses the scan if the PC starts getting used again! Again, this reason alone is enough to change! In fact, my wife read that and said, "Hey - I want this on my computer! My AV always starts scanning when I'm working!" So, one of my 3 installs is going there!

In addition, the anti-virus can be set to scan all files or just dangerous ones (saving time), can be set to scan all kinds of files, has HOURLY updates, can be set to scan when YOU want, and can even be set to exclude certain types of files if you want! Even scan incoming AND outgoing messages if you want - all fully customizable! Oh, and did I mention that it has a year of UNLIMITED tech support too in case you have trouble? WOW!!

Think that's great? Wait till you see the firewall! Blows Windows firewall away (along with every other firewall as far as I'm concerned)! First off, yes, it keeps hackers out - all firewalls do. But this also protects you in other ways. It can monitor when a program is trying to access the internet and send all your personal info to the mothership. That, to me, is HUGE! You never know if that program you just installed is completely trustworthy - so this keeps you safe!

Another fantastic idea that I'm really excited about is the "Idle Lock" - Get this - you can set it so that if you're not using the computer for a specified amount of time (set by you) that the network locks down - nothing can come in or out! I've always said the most secure internet connection is the one that's unplugged when not in use - and this does that!! Oh, and you can also lock your computer down with the press of a mouse if you like - right from the main page!

This can also show you how many attacks it has blocked, block the attacker's IP address for a specified (by you) amount of time, and has a lot of fully customizable options. Truth is though, that the default settings work fine for me! Oh, and again, this seems like it doesn't slow anything down at all - in fact, if you're using a different firewall, this will probably speed things up! I know one thing for sure, I'm installing this on my laptop for travel - it's just too dangerous to surf using wireless networks without it!

Finally, this also includes a fantastic anti-spyware program! Just like the rest of it, it's really fast, stays out of the way, and just does the job! It automatically updates and scanning is a breeze - and fast too! I don't think I've ever seen a spyware can that was soooo fast - and it did a great job! Found a few minor things that it easily fixed!

OK, that's the main stuff, but I also wanted to mention how much easier to use this is than most other security software. First off, I think 90% of the users out there can just install it and forget it - the default settings are really a nice balance and should work well for just about every computer out there. If you want to change stuff, it's really easy to do and the program has an excellent help file that, quite frankly, most users will never ever need!

The price? You're not going to believe this one - we're talking just $9.97 and US shipping is FREE! This is the current version and retails for $49.95 (check Iolo's site - it's not cheap), so $9.97 is an amazing deal. 1 Year worth of support and updates too! Oh, works on XP, Vista, & Win 2000!

Oh, and get this - it's a 3 user license!! So you can install this on up to 3 different computers! That's way less than $4.00 per computer! Grab a friend or two and have them chip in! For less than $4.00 per computer, you just can't go wrong! It's amazing and it's what I am going to be running from now on!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4583

PS - Seriously, this is simply the best Anti-virus, Anti-Spyware, and Firewall software I've ever used and it's going to be on my machine from now on. My computer is soooo much faster now after getting rid of the other bloated software package I had been using - and this just has soooo many great options! Don't miss out!

Computers 101

Q:
I love to play games on my computer, but I'm always worried I'm going to mess something up. Can you please tell me some things I should do before I start playing? Thanks for your help!

A:
Oooh, what a great game question! If you're a big gamer (or maybe someone else in your household is), you probably get so excited every time you get a new game. You anticipate being able to play it and you just can't wait for the installation process to finish so that you can get started! Well, not to burst your bubble, but there are some things you should do even before you start installing the new game on your computer. Bummer, huh? But I promise it will help you in the long run. Let's see what we've got!

Before you even get the game near your computer, you should first run a disk cleanup. To do that, double click on your My Computer icon and then right click on your C: drive. Select Properties and then click on the Disk Cleanup button. That will remove some unnecessary files on your system in order to make room for your new game. Next, you should run a ScanDisk (called Error Checking in XP). For XP, right click on your C: drive again and choose Properties, Tools tab. Just hit the Check Now button and you'll be all set. Other versions can get there by going to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, ScanDisk. That will help fix any errors that lie within your system. (Click here to learn how to do a disk cleanup in Windows Vista).

Once that's done, you should run a defrag on your system. We've talked about this several times in the past, but if you're still not sure how to do it, click here to learn how. Or, if you're using Vista, use this link. Finally, before you put your new game in to install, make sure you close any other programs you have open. You can use the Task Manager to easily close those out. Just hit Ctrl + Alt + Del on your keyboard and close them one by one.

If you perform all of those cautionary tasks before you install a new game on your computer, the game will run much smoother and without any freeze ups. You'll also have a better chance of a clean and proper install. You'll probably combat any error messages that may have popped up before as well. So, now that you know your computer is ready, let the games begin!

MS Office

Text Stretch

Do you ever wish you could stretch or rotate text?

I'm sure some of you are thinking that would be nice when you're using WordArt, but what if you don't care for WordArt? Wouldn't it be nice to still have some flexibility with your text?

Well, I suggest you give this little trick a try!

  • First, format the text as you want it to be, including font, color, bold, etc.

  • Now, highlight the text and cut it from the document (Ctrl + X).

  • Next, go to the Edit menu and choose Paste Special. (In Office 2007, you'll find the Paste button under the Home tab on the ribbon. Click on the bottom half of the Paste button to locate Paste Special).

  • Choose Picture when the Paste Special window opens.

  • Click OK.

When you're returned to your document, you'll have your text back, but it's now a picture. Therefore, it has handles, can be moved, cropped, stretched, rotated and all the other things you can do with pictures. Oh yeah!

Here's one you've really gotta grab - it's a handy little digital thermometer that you're going to love (well, as much as you can love a thermometer anyway :-)!

Seriously, just wait till you see this thing - your days of trying to determine the temperature by seeing how long it takes your tongue to get unstuck from the flag pole are over (or maybe that's just me that does that)!

A quick glance at the easy-to-read, jumbo display will tell you how cold it is out there - no more flipping around from TV station to TV station just to find the temp! I have one of these and I can tell you firsthand that it's really easy to setup and use. Tip of the Day

XP and Vista Uptime

If you leave your computer running 24/7 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week), you might be interested in determining the amount of uptime that has accumulated since your last reboot. Luckily, it's very easy to find that information in both Windows XP and Vista. Let's take a look!

Tracking Uptime in Vista

To find Vista’s uptime, right click on your taskbar and select Task Manager.

Now, with the Task Manager open, click on the Performance tab and you'll see the amount of uptime listed under the System section.

Tracking Uptime in XP

To find the uptime in XP, go to Start, Run, type in "cmd" and then click OK.

That will bring up a command prompt. Type in “systeminfo” (without the quotes) and then hit Enter. It will take a few minutes for the analysis to complete and get your results, but when it's finished, you'll see your uptime listed in days, hours, minutes and seconds.

Find your uptime today!

Today's Feature

Every Web Site is Malicious?

I was going to write this week's security article about the patches Microsoft released yesterday (February 10, 2009), but they weren't very exciting this month. So, instead, I'll just start this tip by saying if you haven't already installed the patches, you should do so now. You should always install your Microsoft updates. Even if they're boring, they're always absolutely necessary!

Okay, now that I've made my public service announcement, I have a story to tell you!

Do you use Google as your main search engine? If so, you may have seen a box like this before:

It's a warning box Google uses to warn you about bad Web sites before you visit them. Google teamed up with stopbadware.org to make the warning system and most of the time, it works very well.

Now, I told you that story so that I can tell you this story. Last Monday, I came into work after the weekend and started my normal routine. I started up my computer, got my coffee and began to check my e-mail. Usually, I expect to have a lot of e-mail on a Monday, but when I saw I had over 80 e-mails, I nearly spit out my coffee!

I started to read through the e-mails and many of them were from customers telling me they went to WorldStart's Web site and got the Google warning you see above. I thought to myself that there must be some mistake, so I started trying to figure out what was happening.

Luckily, it didn't take too long for me to figure it out! It seems as if Google made a mistake. At 11:44 PST, Google mistakenly marked every Web site on the entire Internet as "potentially harmful." When that happened, every Web site anyone would visit via a Google link received the warning. Since the warning provides a link to stopbadware.org, their site ended up crashing.

So, for those of you who tried to visit WorldStart's Web site (or any others for that matter) at 11:44 on Saturday, January 31, 2009, you can rest at ease that it was just a mistake.

It just goes to show that even the best protection in the world is not always perfect. Common sense is always the best protection. Until next time, stay safe out there, my friends!

Lastly, it will help you determine which free language course you should enroll in.

I am enrolling in French 101. I have more advanced French training than that, but it's been so long that I want to really relearn the basics.

Next, you’ll be directed to your homepage where a mini-tutorial will start. Click on the Let’s Get Started button to begin. It will tell you how to check your messages and how to add friends.

You’ll find the course you signed up for under the Learn tab. I like the way they approach teaching the languages. You not only see the word or sentence they’re teaching, but you can hear it too. The courses also combine interesting assignments where you have to choose the right answer, the right picture or even form the right sentence.

You can even take crash courses if you’re going to be traveling to a foreign country and need just enough to get around while you're there. You’ll find that option under the Courses section on the Learning tab.

Check it all out today!

Monthly Wallpaper

February Wallpaper

Here's February's wallpaper. It's all free, so enjoy!

Snowy Deer

This girl was in a group I managed to slip into. It was snowing pretty good and she was curious about me and got within eight feet for this close-up! If this isn't a February shot, I don't know what is!

Moonrise

I shot this just last month in the Valley of Fire State Park, just about an hour from Las Vegas. We were going to another spot just down the road, but couldn't resist stopping for this shot. Timing on one like this is really tough, so dumb luck came to my rescue.

Summer Stream

Here's one that's a little different. It was shot in the Smokies last summer, but instead of giving you the straight shot, I added a soft-focus/dreamy effect to it. I hope you enjoy it!
