Quick Tips

Rate Our Tips

Just a reminder! If you spend a lot of time on WorldStart's Web site, you've probably noticed a little something extra we've added just recently. We've been thinking a lot about how we can make our site and our newsletters a little more interactive for all of you loyal readers and we think we've come up with the perfect solution. From now on, you'll have the opportunity to rate our tips. That's right, you now have the option to tell us what you like and what you don't really care for. Keep reading for all the details!

From now on, at the end of each tip you see in the Computer Tips newsletter, you'll find a link you can follow to rate the tip. Note: Each tip has its own link, so make sure you look for it after each individual one. Once you click on the link, you'll be taken to that tip's archive page. At the top of the page, you'll see a little bar that says Rate This Tip! As you drag your mouse along the bar, the colors will change and you can rate the tip anywhere between 0 and 100. Just simply stop your mouse on whatever number rating you'd like to give the tip.

Once you set your rating, it will be added to everyone else's rating for an overall average. Even further up on the page, you'll see another bar that's meant for just the rating itself. That way, you're able to see how the tip has been rated all along. If it says "Not Yet Rated," you can be the first to set its rating. How cool is that?! So, from here on out, we want to hear your opinion. If you like a certain tip, let us know by rating it. If you don't like something, we want to know that as well. It's just another way we're making the newsletters all for you!

The Program Every PC User Has Always Wanted!

Finally! An Easy Way To Upgrade To A New PC!

Amazing New System Lets You Automatically Transfer:

All Your Files & Folders
Your E-mail Messages
Your E-mail Accounts, Contacts & Settings
Your Internet Settings
User Accounts
Windows And Program Settings

Point-And-Click >>> Automatic & Easy!

Just Connect The Cable, Run The Software And Sit Back!

WOW! This Will Blow You Away!

Quick!

Q: What's the worst thing about getting a new computer?

A: Getting all your Files, Windows Settings, User Accounts, Internet Settings, and E-mail Messages, Email Settings, and Contacts over to the new computer! What an amazing hassle - that alone is enough to make you want to NOT get a new computer, ya know?

Well, we have a brilliant solution for you! We just got a mind-blowing deal on IOGear's SmartLink USB 2.0 Transfer Cable! Think of it as an automatic way to get your stuff from XP or Vista to a new Vista machine! (Sorry, it doesn't go XP to XP - only XP to Vista, or Vista to Vista).

IOGEAR Smartlink USB 2.0 Data Transfer Cable

How's it work? Super simple! Let's say you're transferring from an XP computer to your shiny new Vista powerhouse machine. First, just install the included software on XP (if you're going Vista to Vista, no software to install at all). OK, now, plug one end of the included cable into your old computer and the other end into your new one. A screen will automatically pop up on each computer so you can start the process! That's it! From there, just follow along the little Wizard (and even that only has a few easy steps)!

The really great thing about this is all the stuff it can transfer - and how absolutely automatic the whole process is! It can automatically transfer ALL your settings, all the files in your "default" locations like MyDocuments, MyPhotos, MyVideos and MyMusic folders, it can automatically transfer e-mail messages (avoiding a huge to do-it-yourself hassle), all your contacts, all your user accounts, all your Internet Explorer settings, and MORE!

PLUS - If you don't like the auto feature, you can completely customize WHAT you want transferred in a few easy steps! So if you keep stuff all over the place, just tell it what files and folders to transfer - just a few mouse clicks and REALLY simple! You can use this to transfer just 1 folder and nothing else OR you can transfer every file and folder on your HD, along with any settings you want to keep! Just check the stuff you want, uncheck what you don't! It's all up to you - and it's all EASY!

Oh, and the special cable that comes with this is USB 2.0 - so the transfer speed is mind-blowingly quick! Your new computer will have all your stuff on it before you know it! I just got a laptop with Vista on it, so I used this to transfer all my info over from my XP computer. Kind of figured it'd be a LONG project, but in the time it took me to have dinner, it was over! Saved me HOURS of frustrating file copying - not to mention resetting all my settings! I love it!

Oh, and you are absolutely gonna LOVE how this transfers all your settings, contact and e-mail messages! You know how it is - over time, you've set up your old computer just the way YOU like it. All your contacts, all your e-mail settings, all your internet settings, all those user accounts - you get everything how you want it, then get a new computer and have to start over. Not with this! No hunting around for e-mail passwords, no trying to remember lost e-mail address, no trying to retype all your contact info (emails addresses, phone, etc), no futile attempts to import all those old - but still important - e-mails, even most of your application settings transfer - it's absolutely amazing! AWESOME!

I've never seen a faster, easier way to get your data and settings from one computer to another!

If you're EVER, in your lifetime, going to buy another computer, you've just gotta grab this! You'll love the time it saves - and all the hard-to-get settings it transfers!

Your price? Just $16.97 and US shipping is FREE! For that kind of money, it's crazy not to buy this! Seriously, why spend hours and hours trying to transfer all your files and info over? Go the automatic route - you'll love it!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4931

PS - Don't miss out! This is an outstanding idea - and an outstanding deal! Your time is worth a lot, why waste a day or two setting up a new computer, getting your files to it, looking up ways to get all your settings transferred when you can do it in no time with this? Grab it today - you'll be glad you did!

Computers 101

Q:
What can you tell me about the Photo Gallery feature that comes with Windows Vista? I just switched over to Vista and I'm interested in learning more about it. Any information you have would be greatly appreciated!

A:
Ah, yes, the Photo Gallery. This is actually one of the new features that caught my eye when I first started using Windows Vista as well. I've quickly mentioned the Photo Gallery in several other tips, but I've never gone into much detail. So, what do you say we take care of that today? Listen up, because here comes some great Photo Gallery information that you can really put to good use!

Basically, with the Photo Gallery, you can easily organize, find and enjoy your photos (and videos) right from your Vista computer. With the new Photo Gallery process, acquiring and importing your photos and videos has never been easier. The program is more flexible than ever as well. For example, you can even launch any other photo and video applications you've used in the past right into the Photo Gallery. So, if what you're worried about is getting used to something completely new, you can ease your way in by using your old programs until you get acquainted with Vista's version. Cool, huh?!

To get to the Photo Gallery, just go to Start, Windows Photo Gallery. A new window will open and any photos you already have on your computer will show up. Across the top, there's a toolbar you can use to work with your photos and/or videos. On the left hand side, you'll see all the navigation you need to get started, along with all the organizational tools you can use to keep all your files right where you want them. There's also a sliding bar you can use to resize your photos at any time or you can start up a slideshow with just a single click.

The Photo Gallery also comes with all the basic photo editing tools you'll need to make your pictures as good as they can be. You can crop your photos, remove red eye and so on. Plus, if you make a mistake, you can easily undo any of the changes you've made. You can then go right back to your original image and start over.

Even more, printing your photos is extremely easy with the Vista Photo Gallery. You can print them via any local printer with the Photo Print Wizard or you can even use the online printing option. The online version will send your photos to a retail photo finisher where they will print your images in a professional like manner. And one more thing: if you combine the works of the Photo Gallery and the Windows Movie Maker, you can use your photos and videos to create a home video with special effects and transitions. How awesome is that?!

Now, going back to the organization feature of Photo Gallery (which I'm sure a lot of you are interested in), the coolest thing you can do is apply tags to your photos. Those tags then help you find your photo and video files in mere seconds. You can add the tags in when you first import a photo or you can wait and tag several photos together at once. Along with that, you can use the Info Pane to add special information about your photos and videos. For example, you can put in information like the file name, the date it was taken, you can rate it, etc. It couldn't be easier!

That's just a sample of everything you can do with Photo Gallery. You can do slideshows, create your own screensavers, make your own home movies and so on. And the best part? All of this and so much more can be found in one, easy to access program. If you have Windows Vista (any of the versions), you can start using the Photo Gallery today. I've given you an overview, so now it's your turn to go and check it out for yourself. It's one of the best features you'll find in Vista and I highly recommend you go and give it a try!

Have fun, my photo loving friends!

MS Office

Start the Task When?

By default, MS Outlook 2007 puts your tasks at the bottom of your weekly calendar.

It really is a nice feature to have. One quick glance and you can see which items are due each day, all while checking your appointment schedule as well.

But what if you take a look at your task list for the day and realize something pretty big is due and you haven't even started on it yet?

What now?

You may be thinking it'd be nice if Outlook put the task on the start date so that you'd have a reminder of when it's time to get to work.

If that's your preference, I'm here to let you know that with just a couple clicks, Outlook will be happy to oblige!

While in the Calendar feature, you're looking for the View menu, Daily Task List and then the Arrange By choice.

Once you arrive in that location, you'll see you have two choices: Start Date and Due Date.

Choose Start Date and poof! You'll see your tasks instantly rearrange themselves so that you won't be caught unaware by a big deadline again. Yes!

Tip of the Day

Better GCal

By now, many of you know I’m all about making good Web sites even better! I love to use Greasemonkey scripts and Firefox add ons to add new features to my favorite Web sites. So far, we’ve covered YouTube, MySpace, Digg, Wikipedia, eBay, Amazon, Gmail, Flickr and Google Reader. Whew! That’s a long list, but I have even one more to add to it: Google Calendar. Many people think Google Calendar (or GCal) is the best online calendar out there and I agree. So, all I have to say is all of you Google Calendar users are in for a real treat today!

1.) To tweak GCal, we’ll be using a Firefox extension called Better GCal.

2.) To get started, head on over to the Better GCal Web page and begin the download by clicking on the green Download button.

3.) After the download is finished, restart Firefox by hitting the Restart Firefox button.

4.) Firefox will open and you can now surf to www.google.com/calendar and log in with your Google account information.

If you don’t have a Google account, you can create one here and then continue.

5.) Once you've logged in, you should see your calendar with all of the events you entered listed.

6.) Now, to add the new features, go up to Tools and then click on Add Ons.

7.) Find Better GCal in the list and then select Options.

8.) You’ll see a list of checkboxes. As always, all you need to do to activate a feature is checkmark it and then refresh GCal.

Now that you have that out of the way, I’d like to show you some of my favorite features in Better GCal!

Always Use a Secure Connection

I think this one is a no brainer! Why wouldn’t you want to use a secure connection to access Google Calendar? If not, you run the risk of revealing names, phone numbers and other sensitive information to strangers.

Collapse Header and Sidebar

I really like this one too! Do you think the header and sidebar make the whole page a little crowded? Or, have you ever wanted to just see only the calendar? If so, this option is perfect for you! If you select it and restart GCal, you’ll notice little purple arrows at the top and to the left of the page.

If you click on them, presto! You have a nice clean page.

Colorize Weekends

Sometimes you only want to focus on the weekend days on your calendar. This option makes it so much easier by colorizing Saturday and Sunday. Nifty, huh?!

Text Wrap Events

Don’t you hate it when certain events get cut off, because the box is too small? It can be such a pain in the neck, wouldn’t you agree? Well, you’ll never have to worry about that again, because this feature takes care of that problem.

As always, skins are included with this add on. There's only one right now, but I’m sure as GCal updates, more will be included. Here's how the redesigned Dark Skin looks:

If you take a liking to it, you can set it as your default. Also, if you ever need help with any feature, simply select the Help tab and click on the Troublesome script.

Finally, if you have a favorite Web site you'd like me to optimize with Firefox add ons and Greasemonkey scripts, you can let me know through my contact page. Your submissions may even be featured here in the newsletter. Enjoy!

Social Wallpapering

I love when I find Web sites that are truly gems! If you love to change your desktop’s wallpaper as much as I do, you're going to love all the options you find here. And best of all, it's all free!

To get started, select the type of monitor you have from the options: Standard, Wide Screen, Dual Monitors, All or Random. I have a Wide Screen, so I selected that.

Not only can you find really nifty wallpaper here, but you can rank and classify it as part of the wallpaper community! To rank wallpaper, all you have to do is click on the up or down arrow beneath the image.

You can also choose to browse the wallpaper by category. Just mouse over the Browse button and a drop down menu will appear with many different categories to choose from.

The only problem I had with the site is there are way too many really stellar ones to pick from! I had a very hard time choosing which one would grace my desktop. But, on the bright side, when I get tired of the one I picked, there will be a bevy of new ones waiting for me!

Check it out today and spice up your desktop!

Monthly Wallpaper

February Wallpaper

Here's February's wallpaper. It's all free, so enjoy!

Snowy Deer

This girl was in a group I managed to slip into. It was snowing pretty good and she was curious about me and got within eight feet for this close-up! If this isn't a February shot, I don't know what is!

Moonrise

I shot this just last month in the Valley of Fire State Park, just about an hour from Las Vegas. We were going to another spot just down the road, but couldn't resist stopping for this shot. Timing on one like this is really tough, so dumb luck came to my rescue.

Summer Stream

Here's one that's a little different. It was shot in the Smokies last summer, but instead of giving you the straight shot, I added a soft-focus/dreamy effect to it. I hope you enjoy it!

All can be found here:
