Quick Tips

OE Folders Column

Do you use Outlook Express for all of your e-mail needs? I know a lot of you do (myself included), so I thought this little tip would add the perfect touch to today's newsletter! So, tell me, when you're using Outlook Express, do you usually have the Folders column on display? You know, the list of all the folders you use for your e-mails, such as the Inbox, Outbox, Sent Items, Deleted Items, Drafts, etc. Those are there to help you keep your e-mail organized and I don't know about you, but I think they are a huge help!

Now, what would you do if you lost that column? What if it just happened to disappear? Would you go crazy? I know I would, because I depend on those folders to keep all of my e-mails straight and in line. Well, before you go too ballistic, there's a very easy way to get the Folders column back. Here's how!

In Outlook Express, in the far left corner, the word "Inbox" is written in big letters and it has a little arrow next to it. If you click on that arrow, all of your folders will show up for you. Now, also in that window, there's a little push pin icon. If you click on that, the Folders column will come back and stay permanently. It looks like this:

If you don't click on the push pin, the column will go away as soon as you click on something else. So, if you lost your e-mail folders and you want them back, use this method to keep them forever. Yes!

http://imgsrv.worldstart.com/prodimages/wow.gif Your Price? Just $9.97!! http://imgsrv.worldstart.com/prodimages/wow.gif

WOW! I can't wait to share this one with ya! We just scored an amazing deal on my new favorite software - Iolo System Shield! Let me tell ya, this is NOT your run-of-the-mill Internet Security Suite! This does an amazing job of keeping your computer safe from hackers, spyware, and viruses - but read on, because the way this is implemented is far superior to ANY software like this I've used in the past! This really isn't your typical security suite - and you're gonna love it!  I am personally running this software on my computer and it's by far the best I've used! I can't tell you how impressed I am with this - if you value your safety - and system performance, you've got to check this out!

OK, first off, I know you're probably already running anti-virus, anti-spyware, and a firewall - so why do you want this? Well, the thing that impresses me the most with this software suite is the absolute speed it brings to the table! Not just in scanning and such, but the very real lack of system hogging it does. Most suites like this are horrible - they really slow your system to a crawl - not this one! I uninstalled all my previous security software and tired this instead - WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! Frankly, there's a good chance that if you're currently using Norton, Mcafee, ect, when you replace them with this you're going to think you got a new computer! The difference is THAT dramatic! This speed-up alone is enough reason to switch if you ask me!

Next, I absolutely LOVE how this just runs in the background and stays out of the way. So many security programs love to tell you that they are updating your system, getting new virus definitions, scanning, whatever. It's an all day long affair of acknowledging boxes and virtually patting your software on the back, "Good boy - I'm glad you downloaded some updates!" Well, those annoyances are GONE with this - it just works in the background and updates itself when necessary without dozens of boxes telling you all about it - that alone was enough to make me switch! Of course, if it finds something serious, it'll let you know (all customizable too).

Oh, and let me tell you about the anti-virus - you're gonna love this! First, yes it keeps you safe from e-mail viruses, downloads, and monitors in the background - just like everyone's AV does. However, it's the little things that make you fall in love with this! First, don't you just HATE it when you're working on your computer and the stupid AV software comes up and starts a scan? Slows everything down - what a pain! This software will actually make sure the PC has been idle for a specified amount of time before it scans! It waits till you're away before it starts - is that cool or what??? Oh, and it pauses the scan if the PC starts getting used again! Again, this reason alone is enough to change! In fact, my wife read that and said, "Hey - I want this on my computer! My AV always starts scanning when I'm working!" So, one of my 3 installs is going there!

In addition, the anti-virus can be set to scan all files or just dangerous ones (saving time), can be set to scan all kinds of files, has HOURLY updates, can be set to scan when YOU want, and can even be set to exclude certain types of files if you want! Even scan incoming AND outgoing messages if you want - all fully customizable! Oh, and did I mention that it has a year of UNLIMITED tech support too in case you have trouble? WOW!!

Think that's great? Wait till you see the firewall! Blows Windows firewall away (along with every other firewall as far as I'm concerned)! First off, yes, it keeps hackers out - all firewalls do. But this also protects you in other ways. It can monitor when a program is trying to access the internet and send all your personal info to the mothership. That, to me, is HUGE! You never know if that program you just installed is completely trustworthy - so this keeps you safe!

Another fantastic idea that I'm really excited about is the "Idle Lock" - Get this - you can set it so that if you're not using the computer for a specified amount of time (set by you) that the network locks down - nothing can come in or out! I've always said the most secure internet connection is the one that's unplugged when not in use - and this does that!! Oh, and you can also lock your computer down with the press of a mouse if you like - right from the main page!

This can also show you how many attacks it has blocked, block the attacker's IP address for a specified (by you) amount of time, and has a lot of fully customizable options. Truth is though, that the default settings work fine for me! Oh, and again, this seems like it doesn't slow anything down at all - in fact, if you're using a different firewall, this will probably speed things up! I know one thing for sure, I'm installing this on my laptop for travel - it's just too dangerous to surf using wireless networks without it!

Finally, this also includes a fantastic anti-spyware program! Just like the rest of it, it's really fast, stays out of the way, and just does the job! It automatically updates and scanning is a breeze - and fast too! I don't think I've ever seen a spyware can that was soooo fast - and it did a great job! Found a few minor things that it easily fixed!

OK, that's the main stuff, but I also wanted to mention how much easier to use this is than most other security software. First off, I think 90% of the users out there can just install it and forget it - the default settings are really a nice balance and should work well for just about every computer out there. If you want to change stuff, it's really easy to do and the program has an excellent help file that, quite frankly, most users will never ever need!

The price? You're not going to believe this one - we're talking just $9.97 and US shipping is FREE! This is the current version and retails for $49.95 (check Iolo's site - it's not cheap), so $9.97 is an amazing deal. 1 Year worth of support and updates too! Oh, works on XP, Vista, & Win 2000!

Oh, and get this - it's a 3 user license!! So you can install this on up to 3 different computers! That's way less than $4.00 per computer! Grab a friend or two and have them chip in! For less than $4.00 per computer, you just can't go wrong! It's amazing and it's what I am going to be running from now on!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4583

PS - Seriously, this is simply the best Anti-virus, Anti-Spyware, and Firewall software I've ever used and it's going to be on my machine from now on. My computer is soooo much faster now after getting rid of the other bloated software package I had been using - and this just has soooo many great options! Don't miss out!

~Steve

They Do Exist!!!

Finally, After Years Of Searching-

I Have Found Them...

The Perfect Headphones!

Magnificent! Perfect! Comfortable! Crystal Clear! Amazing! Fabulous! These are just a few of the words that I could use to describe these amazing Sentry Headphones.Wait until these headphones wrap around your ears, then you will know what I am talking about! These headphones are simply the best headphones that I have EVER come across!!! I will never wear another earbud or headset again!

Personally, I hate earbuds! In fact, they convinced me that I have odd shaped ears. Those things are simply not comfortable and they are always falling out of my ears. You should see me on my morning jog, I am constantly plugging an earbud (normally the right ear) back into my ear, just to have it fall out again within a few steps! Then, by the end of my jog, both of my ears are sore after those things have been sticking in them for about 30 mins!

Because I hate the earbuds so much, I have been searching for a headset that is lightweight, comfortable, and will stay on my ears while I run! Well, let me tell you, I have searched for years! Then, just the other day, when I thought I had given up and that I would have to settle for those stupid earbuds the rest of my life, I came across these headphones. I said it once, and I will say it again, these headphones are wonderful!

First, they are really lightweight. Like earbuds, these headphones don't have that annoying, heavy, strap that wrap around your head to make them stay in place. However, like headphones, this pair has padded earpieces that comfortably rest on the outside of your ears.

So, you are probably wondering how they stay in place? Well, these headphones have nifty little hooks that hook onto the back of your ears as if you were wearing glasses. These little rubber hooks secure the headphones in place and are extremely comfortable. Today, I wore them all day at work, and forgot that I had them on!!! I was shocked!!!

And the quality of the sound could not be better! You will not miss a single beat with these headphones! Even better, the head phone jack works with my computer, my iPod, and my AM/FM radio! These headphones could not get any better!

Oh- wait! Yes they can... with the price! For just $12.97 and US Shipping is Free. Let me tell ya, I have searched so long for the perfect headphones that I would pay triple that amount. When I saw the price I picked up two sets just for myself- just incase anything horrendous happens and I need a new set. Check out this site for more information!!!

PS: We have a very limited quantity of these headphones! Order yours before they are gone! You won't be sorry!!!! Oh- and these headphones go great with the Free Radio!!! Order NOW!!

Q:
Now that you've told us what to look out for in a faulty power supply and how to go about replacing it, can you please tell us how to install a new one? That's the only thing you haven't covered yet. Thanks for all your help with this!

A:
Of course I will! As promised in yesterday's newsletter, I will tell you exactly how to install your brand new power supply. Now, if you're just tuning in, you'll want to refer back to yesterday's (February 9, 2009) Q&A tip to get caught up on what we're talking about, but here's a quick rundown for you. In that tip, we went over a couple things you can check on to make sure your power supply really is "dead" before you go out and buy a whole new one. We also discussed how to remove the power supply from your computer case and we talked about what to look for when shopping for a new unit. Whew!

So, all that's left now is actually installing your new power supply and that's exactly what we're going to cover today. I know most of you are probably at different stages in this process and that's fine. I mean, some of you may have already gone out and purchased a new power supply, some of you may still be researching which one you'd like to get and the rest of you may just be reading through this information for future reference. Either way, you can print this tip out or save it to your computer and that way, you'll have it whenever you need it. That's the beauty of this newsletter! Okay, so what do you say we get started? Let's go!

Once you have your sparkling new power supply, double check one more time that all the power around your computer is turned off. You don't want any power running through your system when trying to install a new piece of hardware. Otherwise, you may get the shock of your life! When you're ready, take the screws you saved when you removed your old power supply and use them to secure your new one into place. It should fit perfectly into the spot where your old one used to sit. When you're done with that, go ahead and follow these steps:

1.) First, find the ATX power connector on your new power supply and plug it into your motherboard's receptacle. Make sure it's plugged in tightly as well.

2.) Next, take the rest of the power connectors and plug them into your hard drive, CD ROM drive and any other components that may need to be hooked up to the power supply. That just depends on how many devices you have along with your computer. Just make sure they're all firmly plugged in and then move on to the next step.

3.) Once you have everything hooked up, take a look around and make sure there are no unused power connectors just hanging there. If you just leave them there, they could eventually touch a fan or the heat sink and that could be bad news! If you don't need them for anything, you can tie them up with a rubber band and put them in a safe spot, away from any of the other components.

4.) Now, you can put your computer case back together! Just slide the panel back on and screw it into place.

5.) You can reconnect your monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, etc.

6.) Next, flip the On/Off switch on the back of your power supply to the On position.

7.) Finally, plug the power cable on the back of your power supply to the wall socket or your power strip.

That's it! You have now installed your very own power supply. I'm so proud of you! You can now start up your computer and experience what it's like to have a nice, quiet fan. No more awful noises coming from your computer. Oh yeah!

MS Office

Extending Your Chart Data

So, you have a beautiful MS Excel chart (known to some as a graph) and it's the perfect way to display your data.

It has all the labels, colors, titles and every other aspect any good chart would have, but now, you have to start over.

Why, you ask?

Well, unfortunately, you have more data to add to the chart.

So, that means starting over, doesn't it?

If I said yes, you'd be disappointed and there would be no tip for today, so I'll have to answer with a resounding, "No Way! We're not starting anything over!"

Believe it or not, but your problem can be solved with a quick click, click and drag!

Here's the deal. First, select the chart by clicking on it.

You should notice that the chart's data is now highlighted in a color outline.

See the little squares at the corners of the outline?

Use a square to click, hold and drag the outline to include your extra data.

Now, release the mouse button.

Quick! Take a look at your chart.

Do you see it?

Yep, that's right! Your chart instantly updated itself to include the extra data.

The coolest part?

You didn't have to start all over!

You simply had to click (on the chart), click (on the outline corner) and drag (to include the new data!)

Tip of the Day

More Opera Features

I know there are several of you out there who are proud Opera Web browser users. I just started using Opera a few months ago and even though it hasn’t replaced Firefox for me yet, it boasts some neat features you may not even know about. So, I’m here today to tell you all about them. Let’s get right to it!

If you're completely new to Opera, you can download it on http://www.opera.com. Also, be sure to read through WorldStart's tip archives, because we've done several Opera articles in the past!

The first feature is Opera Link. It’s very similar to Firefox's Foxmarks, but it's a little better. Opera Link synchronizes not only bookmarks, but also Speed Dial, Personal Bar, Notes, Typed Browser History and Custom searches.

1.) To get started, you need to create a My Opera account. Choose a username, password and enter in your e-mail address. When you're finished, click on the Sign Up button.

2.) You'll then see a “Welcome to My Opera” page. Now, you just need to set up Opera Link.

3.) To synchronize all your bookmarks and settings, go to File, Synchronize Opera. If you click on Options, you can select what information you want to be synchronized. Then click Log In.

4.) You’re now done! To synchronize between multiple computers, just repeat step 3. It's as easy as pie!

The other feature I wanted to show you in Opera is only for those of you who have a microphone. Opera has a setting for voice commands, which means you can sit back and browse by simply using your voice!

1.) To enable the voice controlled browsing, select Tools, Preferences, Advanced, Voice.

2.) Check the box that says "Enable voice controlled browsing." You can also select which key to press to make Opera listen to your voice or if you don’t want to use a key at all.

3.) The real magic happens when you click on Edit. That's where you can see all of the voice commands Opera has to offer. You can go back and forth between pages, log in, zoom, access your Speed Dial Web sites and so much more! Just remember to say Opera before each command or it won’t hear you.

That’s all for now, so go on and take these features for a spin. I promise they'll make your Web experience so much easier!

Today's Feature

Weatherproofing Your Camera

Weather plays a big part in your day when you're out taking pictures. Because of that, it helps if you weatherproof your camera. If you're using a camera that has an extended lens and accepts filter lenses, this tip should definitely help to ensure that weather doesn’t come between you and the scene you're trying to capture!

Tools Required

One plastic bag, one rubber band and an ultraviolet (UV) filter. Note: In the screenshots below, the UV filter is already mounted on the camera lens, which is why you won’t see the lens separately.

Step 1:

Mount the UV filter on your camera’s lens. Once that's done, cut a hole in the plastic bag and smuggle the camera inside it in such a way that the camera lens sticks out of the hole. That means, the entire camera is hidden inside the plastic bag, except for the camera lens sticking out.

Step 2:

Wrap a rubber band around the UV filter in such a way that the plastic bag is pinched against it. That's to ensure grip and to prevent the plastic from covering the lens when a picture is being taken.

Step 3:

Your camera is now weatherproofed! All you need to do is practice, practice, practice. After all, unlike before, you now need to put your hand inside the plastic bag and operate the camera. That might take some getting used to, but the trade off is great: your expensive equipment is saved from the rain and snow and you'll come away with some great shots!

And Finally...

Sometimes the wind can be overwhelming. That's particularly true when you're in the great outdoors and shooting landscapes. In such circumstances, you just need another inexpensive rubber band to close the hole in the bag. The rest remains the same. Simply continue to operate the camera through the plastic bag and you'll have all-weather gear that's inexpensive as well.

However, if you have the money, another way to protect your shooting gear is to buy a rain hood for your camera. Or, if you're not ready to invest in a rain hood, you could also try wrapping a towel around your camera to keep the rain or snow away. Either way, I wish you happy shooting!

Amanda's Coolsite

Cheap Eats

I must be on a food kick lately! I found another great Web site that helps you find restaurants to eat at. This one specializes in restaurants you can eat at for under $10. Want to know how it works? Of course you do!

All you do is type in your city, state or the zip code of where you want to eat. Then click on the Search button. It will search the database and generate a listing of restaurants where you can eat a meal for under $10!

You may notice a Join option on the site as well. Click on Join Now and then fill out the form with a username, e-mail address, password, your name, zip code, fill in the code and then click on the Create Account button.

What does joining get you, you ask? Well, you can keep a list of your favorite restaurants, read reviews and receive coupons!

Was a specific restaurant you were looking for not listed? If so, click on Add a Restaurant at the top of the page. Fill out the form with all the necessary information and then click on the Submit button.

This Web site is a handy tool whether you’re a local looking for a cheap meal or a tourist visiting a new city. Give it a try today!

February Wallpaper

Here's February's wallpaper. It's all free, so enjoy!

Snowy Deer

This girl was in a group I managed to slip into. It was snowing pretty good and she was curious about me and got within eight feet for this close-up! If this isn't a February shot, I don't know what is!

Moonrise

I shot this just last month in the Valley of Fire State Park, just about an hour from Las Vegas. We were going to another spot just down the road, but couldn't resist stopping for this shot. Timing on one like this is really tough, so dumb luck came to my rescue.

Summer Stream

Here's one that's a little different. It was shot in the Smokies last summer, but instead of giving you the straight shot, I added a soft-focus/dreamy effect to it. I hope you enjoy it!
