Computer Tips [ Amazing Website Finds Your Cellphone + Curse Of The UN-Deletable File + Friday Funnies ] 02/20/09

Computer Tipswww.worldstart.com No, this isn't Steve. You can tell because Steve never wears a suit :-)

Quick Tips

Other Eject Options

I'm sure many of you have read our tips on how to eject a stuck CD from your computer, but even after going through all those steps, are you still having trouble getting that stubborn CD to come out? Sometimes those things can be so frustrating and after you mess with it for awhile, you probably just feel like throwing your whole computer out the window. Am I right? Well, before you go that far, give these alternative tricks a try. They may be just what you've been waiting for!

First, try adding something to the CD. If you put an extra file or another song on it, that might be enough to coax it out. Also, when you're using a CD, make sure you eject it before you start up another program. If you leave the CD in its tray while you use other programs, it could cause some problems. Another thing to try is a simple reboot. Sometimes when you shut down your computer and then turn it back on, the CD will eject.

Now, while all of those are good suggestions, they still might not work for you. So, if that's the case, you may want to try the other tips I mentioned in the first paragraph. One of them tells you to try the traditional method of right clicking on your CD drive and choosing Eject. I know that's the problem you're having, but if you try it more than once, it could finally open. You never know! The other tip we have tells you how to use a paperclip to get your CD out. You can read all about that here. Either way you go, I hope you're finally able to get your CD out so that you can enjoy your life in happy CD bliss once again!

Announcements

Special Note - Hey everyone, Steve here! I told you about these last Friday and they were a complete sell-out. Since that time, we've had people literally screaming for more - after all, it's a pretty incredible buy! Well, yesterday our supplier sent me an e-mail saying he had a few more come in! So, one last chance to grab the GPS deal of the year! I've already got mine and I've been having a blast with it. Give it a try, you'll love it too!

WOW! Turn Your Laptop Into An Incredible GPS Unit!

WAY More Powerful & Full Featured Than A Windshield Mount Unit!

And Only A Fraction - A FRACTION - Of The Cost!

Even Can Respond To Voice Commands!

Best GPS Navigation Ever! Wait Till You Try It!

We just found the coolest GPS package on the planet! It's DeLorme's EarthMate and it transforms your laptop into an amazing, full featured, voice activated GPS Unit! Really! Works great too!

Using your laptop for an automotive navigation GPS is absolutely incredible - and much easier than it might sound too! If you have a passenger, they can keep the computer on their lap when it's needed, and if you're going solo, just set it on the seat next to you! It accepts voice commands, so you don't even need to touch it (more on that in a minute)! Between getting to use your large laptop screen and all the amazing features packed into this, you'll never, ever consider one of those silly windshield-mount units!

How does it work? Glad you asked! You install the map software on your laptop and plug in the included GPS receiver into your laptop's USB port! That's it! You now have a fully functional GPS system you can take with you! The receiver itself is on a 5' cord, so you can easily set it on your car's dashboard if you like (or use the suction cup for the windshield) - it's small too - about the size of a small wireless flip-phone!

Again, this does the same thing as those little units you can spend hundreds of dollars on - except this uses your computer so it's a LOT more powerful! This puts any hand-held or windshield mount GPS unit I've ever seen to absolute and complete shame! PLUS, wait till you see the price - it's a FRACTION of the cost! And you get to do all your navigating on your laptop screen instead of some small, impossible to read 4" LCD panel! It's amazingly good :-)

Earthmate GPS Receiver & Street Atlas USA 2008

OK, this does a LOT! I could literally take up 10 pages just giving you the highlight show! You'll really have to stop by the website to see everything this can do - way too much to go over here (you'll understand when you see the page), but just to give you a little taste of what's in store for you...

First, input your destination and this will get you there with easy to follow turn by turn directions (audio turn by turn help no less)! Even better, this can respond to voice commands from you so it becomes VERY hands-free! In fact, you can train it so you can say something like "When is my next turn?" and it will answer back something like "Your next turn is in 200 yards". Yeah, it's cool!

Earthmate GPS Receiver & Street Atlas USA 2008

In addition, it also has amazing re-routing help for when you run into traffic jams, you can use voice prompting to ask it where the nearest gas station, hotel, etc is, and you can even scout ahead on the map and have it snap back to your current location! Oh, and did I mention it has a whoppin' 4 MILLION places of interest built right in - gas stations, restaurants, hotels, malls, - you name it! Everything you need on the road!

Yeah those little windshield mounted units are starting to look darn pretty pathetic right about now, don't ya think?

Earthmate GPS Receiver & Street Atlas USA 2008

Oh, and get this - you can also import data into it from spreadsheets and most popular contact managers! If you travel for business, this is amazing - just import your contacts and navigate to any one of them with a couple mouse clicks! You can even enter a phone number and this will do a reverse lookup and find the address for you! WOW!

Using the maps is fantastic too! They are amazingly detailed and just a right-click will tell you exactly what's under your mouse (body of water, street, etc)! It can even get you local radio station information - now THAT's insanely impressive!

OK, you get the idea. Frankly, we only have a limited number of these and if I keep going on we're going end up having way more people who want one than we have available. Bottom line is simply this - if you've been thinking about getting a navigation system or windshield mount GPS unit for your car, THIS is going to blow ALL of the competition away! After all, it all the resources of a full-blown computer at its disposal, so really, it's not even a contest! Imagine having this on your next trip! Oh, and imagine how cool this would be if you had to rent a car somewhere and had no clue where you were going!

Your price is only a FRACTION of what you would pay for a full blown GPS unit too! Just $38.97 and US shipping is FREE! These retail for $70, so it's a huge chunk of change off the regular price! And amazing compared to a $400 GPS unit! Don't miss out!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4934

PS - Seriously - only a limited number available. PLEASE get to the site early. Once these are gone we can't get anymore and I'm not sure if we'll ever see something like this again! Don't miss out!

How's that for some good thinkin'?

I mean, think about it - don't you hate it when you grab a flash drive and plug it in - only to discover it's already full of other stuff you need to keep? Wouldn't it be great if, with just a glace, you could tell if you have any room left? Well, with these, you can! The built-in bar goes up like a thermometer as you add data to the drive! Best idea ever for a flash drive if you ask me!

And using these is so easy! All you have to do is just plug it into any USB port and then locate it as a drive under "My Computer". You can now drag and drop files or copy and paste them onto your Flash Drive. It works much the same as a regular hard drive. In addition, you can create folders, delete items, and edit stuff. You use it just like a floppy drive only it's MUCH easier!

I love these! They're perfect for transferring files from one computer to another (office to home or home to school are two great examples). If you have XP or Vista, setup is a breeze! Just plug it in and in a matter of seconds it's ready to go. It's so much faster and more reliable than a floppy (if you even have a floppy drive anymore). Computers 101

Q:
Sometimes when I try to delete a file from my computer, it comes up with a "Cannot Delete File" error. Why does that happen and is there any way I can get around it? Please help!

A:
Worry no more! I can help, I can help! And believe me, I feel your pain. I often get that same error message and let me tell you, it ranks pretty high on my chart as one of the most frustrating things that could possibly happen with my computer. And guessing by the tone of the question, I'm thinking several of you have had this problem too.

Well, you've come to the right place, because I'm going to show you how you can actually get rid of the files your computer deems undeleteable. Now, before I go on, I want to make sure everyone's on the same page. The "Cannot Delete File" error often shows up when you're trying to delete certain files off of your computer. It could be a document or a picture, a music file or even a saved e-mail. Whatever it is, for some reason, that error occurs more often than we'd all like.

The error can pop up under several different circumstances as well. Sometimes the message may tell you it cannot delete the file because there's not enough free disk space. Other times, it will tell you another person or program is using the file and you have to close any applications that may be accessing it. Well, a lot of times, none of the scenarios make any sense. So, more often than not, you're left sitting there thinking, "What am I supposed to do now?" Well, here are some instructions on how to get past that pesky little error message. If you follow them exactly, the file you want to delete really will be deleted by the time you're finished. Here we go!

1.) First, you need to find the location of the file you're trying to delete, as well as, the file's name. For example, maybe you're trying to delete a file called "mywork.txt" and it's located in your My Documents folder. (The location for that would then be C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\My Documents. You must find the exact and full location of the file for this to work). Write both of those down on a piece of paper and keep it close to you.

2.) Next, go to Start, Turn Off Computer and choose Restart.

3.) When your computer starts to boot back up, continuously hit the F8 key on your keyboard until the Advanced Boot Options Menu comes up.

4.) From that menu, select the Safe Mode with Command Prompt choice and then log in normally to your local administrator account.

5.) In the command prompt box, you're going to use the letters "cd" (it stands for change directory) with the location of the file you wrote down earlier. You'll also need to put quotation marks around the location. So, with my example from up above, you would type in cd "C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\My Documents." You don't put quotes around the cd part, just the location.

6.) The next command you need to type in is the delete command, which is "del." You'll need to do that with the file name you want to delete. With my example above, you would type in del mywork.txt. You don't use quotation marks for this part.

Once you have all that done, the file should be gone. You can go back to your initial location to make sure, but it should be deleted for good. If all goes well, you won't ever have to worry about that darn file again. This is just an easy way to get rid of all the files your computer tells you it cannot delete. You can't beat that feeling of happiness, now can you?!

MS Office

Know Your Boundaries

Do you use MS Word's Print or Web Layout Views? If so, do you ever find yourself trying to guess how close you are to the text boundaries you've set with your margins?

Let's consider this situation: You're trying to place a graphic within your document and you don't want it to be in the margins. So, where exactly is the edge? You could "eyeball" it and guess based on the rulers. You could scroll the document up so that you have the top ruler to help with the placement, but wouldn't it be easier if you could just see where the margins are right on the document?

I'm all for that, so let's see what we can do!

In older versions of Word, you need to go to the Options window (Tools menu), View tab.

In Word 2007, you need to access the Options via the Office Button, Word Options button (bottom right hand corner, below the recent documents list).

You now need to locate the Show Document Content section of the Advanced Options.

Everyone is now looking to check the Text boundaries or Show text boundaries option (the exact name depends on the version of Word you're using). Then click OK.

Voila! Your document now looks something like this on your monitor:

Notice that the margins are now clearly marked. It's time to kiss your placement difficulties goodbye!

I'm so excited! We have an absolutely amazing deal on a little gadget from Memorex called a TravelSync that's going to change the way you deal with your files forever! This ingenious little gadget allows you to effortlessly transfer data from one USB device to another - and get this - you do it without any computer involved! Really!

Why is this so cool? Why am I so excited? Why are you gonna love this? Let's consider a few scenarios that happen all the time!

First, have you ever ran out of memory on your digital camera's card? Sure, everyone's taken that train to frustrationville! Wouldn't be fantastic if you could simply transfer your pictures to a USB flash drive and empty that card without the hassle of getting a computer out? Am I crazy? Nope -  With this handy gadget, you just plug your camera in on one side, then stick in a flash drive on the other side!  Press a button and your images are magically transferred right from your camera to the flash drive - no computer necessary! Then, just clear your card and keep on shooting (you can even have this device clear your card after you're done if you like!)!

Memorex TravelSync Portable Transfer Device

Ooohh, yeah - here's one that happens ALL the time - and we've all been there! Have you ever needed a copy of a file someone else has? You know, maybe you just need a copy of a document, maybe you want a quick copy of a photo, maybe a favorite song - whatever. It may be on a friend's flash drive, camera, MP3 player - you name it, but you want that file!

Well, with this you just plug in the device that has the file on one side (could be a flash drive camera, external HD, memory card, ect) then select the file you want from the list. Next, plug in your flash drive (or whatever USB storage you prefer) into the other side and a couple button presses later you have the file! Seriously - No booting up the computer, no opening up the flash drive, no copying the file over to the desktop, no opening up the other flash drive, no copying to the new flash drive, no shutting down! Once you go the direct copy route with this little guy, you'll never go back!!

OK, want another example? What about this - do you have a external hard drive for backups or extra storage? With this, you could actually transfer your photos, files, music, ect directly to your hard drive from your camera (flash drive, memory card, MP3 player) without ever booting up your computer! Talk about a time saver (and a brilliant way to do quick backups)!

Oh, and what if you come home from a trip with a bunch of memory cards in your pocket you want to backup to that same external HD? Don't mess with your computer - just plug a memory card reader into one side of your TravelSync and your HD into the other! Again, just a button press or two and your files are all transferred from your card reader to the external HD! Couldn't be easier! This would be just spectacular if you're on the road and want to quickly backup those once-in-a-lifetime trip photos on a portable HD!!

It's not just for photos either! Got MP3s? Then you'll LOVE this! You want to transfer the music on your MP3 player to another MP3 player? Guess what? This can transfer your files with no computer required! WAIT! Want to put your MP3s on a flash drive, external HD, or memory card? Yup, you guessed it - this is your go to device!

Here's The Bottom Line - If you have USB devices that store data (memory cards, flash drives, digital cameras, MP3 players, external hard drives, ect) this can transfer that data from one device to another with NO computer necessary! This is such an ingenious idea! I don't know how many times I just needed a copy of a file and had to mess around with my computer to do all the copying! This makes it easy!

PLUS, it's incredibly easy to use! Most operations are just a couple button pushes away from being done! Even lets you copy everything or selected files - and the LCD screen makes it simple!

This is really one of those devices that once you have it, you'll wonder how you lived without it!

How much do these go for?  You won't believe your price, but first I gotta tell you "their" prices! Get this - right this second Memorex has these listed on their site for $50 and Amazon is at $48.99! Looking around, I couldn't find ANYONE less than $41 for these things - and pretty much everyone was charging shipping on top of it! And frankly, it's really worth the money they're asking too - it's that good. But....

Your cost is absolutely unbelievable! We're talking just $12.97 and US shipping is FREE! That's not a typo - $12.97 gets you this absolutely amazing, incredibly handy $50 device!! RUN to the site and get this while you can! One of the handiest gadgets we've ever offered!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4890

PS - As you can imagine, quantities on this are limited and we're thinking that, yeah, these are gonna sell pretty quick! Get to the site before they gone - you don't want to WISH you had one later!

It's Time To STOP Paying For Music!!!!!!

Get ALL The FREE Music You Could Ever Want!

Simple, Quick, And FUN!!!

Grab Hundreds Of Songs Per Hour! FREE!!

Use Songs On ANY MP3 Player, iPod Or Computer!!!

WOW! The orders for this software were nothing short of tremendous on Thursday! Thank YOU to the hundreds and hundreds who ordered - you'll love it!

Again, this is the most exciting software I think we've ever offered! It's called Skwid and once you get past the strange name, you're gonna be absolutely blown away at what this software does! This is going to be HUGE!

You love music right? Well, wouldn't it be great if there was a way to legally get all the songs you ever wanted - for free? With this software - you can! Interested? I thought so!

This amazing software lets you record internet radio and turns the tracks into high-quality MP3s for use on your MP3 player, iPod, Computer, CDs, whatever!! You can get thousands of songs - and they won't cost you a cent! You may never buy another MP3! WOW!

Here's how it works - You can search for the type of music you enjoy, or pick from a list. There a HUGE variety - 23 main genres, but with all the "sub-genres" I counted over 200 different types of music you can choose from, so you're bound to find all the types of music you enjoy! From there, just hit the record button! You can have it record tracks form just one station, do dozens of stations at once, or just pick your favorites! TONS of options!

I had mine set to record from 20 stations simultaneously and WOW! I had a whoppin' 38 songs in 15 minutes! Is that amazing or what? I had to sort though and decide which ones to keep, but you gotta admit, that's pretty cool! What an amazing program!

PLUS this thing is loaded down with radio stations too! We're talking 2600+ internet radio stations at your fingertips - and more are added all the time!

PLUS - This software actually allows you to add your own stations! That's right - if you listen to internet radio and your station isn't listed, you can add it to this program! Now that's cool! You'll never run out of songs to record, that's for sure! I think I'm going to find my favorite 10 or 20 stations and record from those. Heck, you can even use this just to listen to internet radio if you like! (I'm listening to it as I type this!)

Oh, and here's the kicker! Not only can this record internet radio stations - it can record ANYTHING coming through your computer's sound card! Wow - think about that for a minute! If you have a favorite song you just have to get, simply find it online, play it, and hit Record with this program! This would work great if a new song came out and the video to the song was online - just watch the video and record! You'd have the song on your MP3 player before it was even available in stores! Now that's serious power! WOW!

So, what do you do with all these songs after you sort 'em out? Well, once you record them just import them to your favorite MP3 software (or right to your player) - or iPod users can import them into iTunes and use with your iPod! How cool is that?

Plus, since these are just standard MP3s, you can also play them on Windows Media player with zero problems - even send them to CDs or your MP3 player right from Windows Media Player - EZ!!!!!! That's right - you don't even need an MP3 player to enjoy these free songs!

What about the quality? I've been pleasantly surprised - and really happy with it! The songs sound great and most of the time you even get the artist name! PLUS in many cases, the radio stations are broadcasting in 128 bit format - the same quality you normally get when you buy MP3s!

What's that? You already have a huge CD collection you wish was in MP3 format? Yup, you guessed - This can convert your CDs to MP3s too! Just pop in the CD, and select the songs you want to convert - then click the Convert button! It's that easy! A few mouse click and all your favorite CD songs are now MP3s! WOW!!

BONUS! In addition to all the great audio recording features, this can also take your personal video files and convert them so they work on your iPod! What a great way to show off your videos!

Finally, we're trying something new with this one - it's a download! That's right - we worked out a deal with the publisher, so you don't have to wait to get this amazing program in the mail! Now, this is our first time doing a download only run like this, but we should be able to get your code to you within 48 hours - beats waiting for the mailman!

Your cost? You're not going to believe this - just $9.97! Is that amazing or what? Most of the time, MP3 music is about a buck a song, so figure this will pay for itself after it finds you just 17 great songs! I had that many "keepers" in less than a half hour! Give it a try, you'll be glad you did!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4438

PS - This is going to be huge, no doubt about it! The sooner you order, the faster we can get your code to you!

Tip of the Day

Windows Media Player: Mini Mode

Did you know that the Windows Media Player program has an interesting option that allows you to open files in the Mini Player mode instead of the full window view? Well, now you do! The Mini Player mode is especially useful for opening music files you don't really need to see in full size. Let's learn a little more about it, shall we?!

To set up the Mini Player mode option, select Tools from the Windows Media Player window. Then click on Options and the following window will open:

You'll see a text box titled "Start the Mini Player for file names that contain this text." The default value in that field is "voiceatt.wav," which is obviously designed to use the Mini mode for voicemail attachments.

If you want to make all your MP3 files open in the Mini Player mode, all you have to do is type ".mp3" (without the quotes) into the window:

Or, if you have all your music stored on a single drive like I do, you can type in the drive letter or even a folder path that leads to your music collection:

If you want every single file to always open in the Mini Player mode, just type a single colon ( : ) into the field. Keep in mind though, that doesn't work quite as well for videos.

Now, when you double click on a file in Windows Explorer, it will open in the Mini Player mode by default. Cool, huh?!

Here are a few more screenshots for you, just to give you an idea of what the Mini Player looks like.

Enjoy!

Amanda's Coolsite

Where's My Cell Phone?

I'm notorious for losing my cell phone around my house and in my car. But with this Web site, I no longer have any trouble finding my cell phone!

All you have to do is put in your cell phone number and click on the Find It button. The service will call your cell phone for free and let it ring so that you can find it. It only takes a few seconds!

You can ring your phone once every five minutes until you find it. They don't keep any of the numbers they dial, so you don't have to worry about them using your information.

This is a very handy tool! There's even a gadget you can add to your Google homepage (if you use Google) that allows you to use it right from there.

I've bookmarked this site and if you lose your cell phone the way I do, you'll want to do the same!

Monthly Wallpaper

February Wallpaper

Here's February's wallpaper. It's all free, so enjoy!

Snowy Deer

This girl was in a group I managed to slip into. It was snowing pretty good and she was curious about me and got within eight feet for this close-up! If this isn't a February shot, I don't know what is!

Moonrise

I shot this just last month in the Valley of Fire State Park, just about an hour from Las Vegas. We were going to another spot just down the road, but couldn't resist stopping for this shot. Timing on one like this is really tough, so dumb luck came to my rescue.

Summer Stream

Here's one that's a little different. It was shot in the Smokies last summer, but instead of giving you the straight shot, I added a soft-focus/dreamy effect to it. I hope you enjoy it!
