Quick Tips

Run With Vista

Are you now using the Windows Vista operating system? If so, are you getting a little frustrated with being away from everything you knew in XP? I mean, going from XP to Vista is an extreme change and it can be very difficult getting used to all the new features. I know I felt that way when I first started working with Vista. I was so used to XP and I just felt like the two operating systems were like day and night.

But, if you look past all that confusion, you'll find that there are a few things you can do with Vista to bring back the comfort of XP. (I'm not even kidding!) As a matter of fact, I'm going to tell you how to do one of those right now. In Windows XP, a function I always use a lot is the Run command. It's just an easy feature to work with and it gets me where I need to go. Now, as I'm sure you've noticed, Vista doesn't offer the Run command. Or, does it?!

To get the Run option back for yourself, right click on the Start button in Vista and choose Properties. Make sure you're under the Start Menu tab and then click on the Customize button. Scroll down near the bottom of that list and checkmark the box that says "Run command." Once you've done that, click OK. In the next window, click Apply, then OK again. Now, go and click your Start button. What do you see? Yep, the Run command is back and ready for some action. Yes!

Your Photos Will Look Absolutely AMAZING!

Easiest Photo Software You'll EVER Use!

Photo Editing And Enhancing Your Photos Has NEVER Been This Easy!

PLUS: Create Outstanding Calendars, Greeting Cards, Albums & More!

Ingenious Print & E-mail Options Save Time & Money!

BONUS! Even Create CD Photo Shows That Play In ANY DVD Player! WOW!

OK, you have this amazing new digital camera - and I'll bet you use it all the time. It's just that, well, what are you doing with all those great pictures you've been taking?  Are they just sitting on your hard drive or memory card? Do you keep telling yourself you've gotta DO something with them one of these days? Quite a project, ya know?  Or is it?

Think about it. Do you:

Wish there was an easy way to edit and make your photos look amazing?

Wish you had a way to easily do special effects?

Wish you could do some cool frames and borders?

Wish you could create calendars, cards, albums, slide shows, and panoramas?

Wish you print multiple photos on one page to save money on paper?

Wish you could easily e-mail photos that were the right size to family and friends?

Well, save you wishes for something else! We just got PhotoStudio Expressions 2.0 and it's the easy to use, powerhouse photo program you've been waiting for!

This software does EVERYTHING - and then it does a little more! Heck, there are features included (like DVD slide shows, panoramas, greeting card creation) that people spend $50 for a stand-alone program to do! All included! Photo editing deal of the decade if you ask me!

First off, just wait till you try the exciting - and amazingly easy to use - photo editing features! You can crop (to specific print sizes or just go freehand), adjust contrast for extra "pop", make a photo darker or lighter, sharpen like crazy, tweak the color (and fix bad color), and more!

Here I am adding some contrast to my moose - just use the little slider and hit Apply:

Oh, and just wait till you see the "Auto Enhance" feature! WOW - this is totally gonna BLOW-YOU-AWAY! One click and the program creates 9 different versions of your shot - then YOU pick the keeper! Just pick the one that looks best and all the work is done automatically! Put it this way - if you DON'T want to spend hour after hair pulling, frustrating hour working on a photo, THIS is the software you want in your corner!

Here I am using AutoEnhance on a deer photo I took this fall. 9 versions - You just pick the one you like:

After you've done the basic adjustments, you may be feeling a little creative. Well, if you do, I have some GREAT news! The geniuses who wrote this program created just a TON of fun effects for you to play with! You can paint, erase, add text, add clipart to your own photos, and more!

Here I am turning my jeep into a cool sketch:

And I've got to tell ya about the frames & borders - WOW - TONS of really cool stuff! Wait till you see all the amazing "edge" treatments you can give your photos! There's 42 different effects and they are REALLY going to "jazz up" your photos! Friends and family are going to be asking how the heck you did it! Little will they know it was JUST a single mouse click!

Here I am adding a cool border to a macro shot I took last spring:

Oh, and just wait till you see the AMAZING filter set this comes with! WOW! You can make you photo look like, well, anything! Lots of fun stuff for distortions (try 'em on faces for hours of fun), tons of cool Make-Your-Photo-Look-Like-A-Painting effects, loads of textures that really create some cool looks, some stunning B&W effects, and more! My favorite is the "old time photo" filter - in a click of the mouse, my photo looks like it was pulled right out of Grandpa's photo album! Very cool!

OK, after you have your photo perfected, then what? Well, you could jump to the printing section and make a make print, OR you can create some amazing projects! This has some really great templates for creating amazing greeting cards, calendars, photobooks and more! All included!

Here I am creating a calendar after I was done with the moose above:

PLUS - this can do a DVD slide show you can play on TV!

Imagine, you can create a Video CD or DVD that you can put into ANY standard DVD player and show off your pictures on TV - it's the new (and vastly improved) family slide show!! Just select the photos you want in your slide show, make any adjustments you like, and create the Video CD or DVD! Also, since this can do Video CDs, all you need is a CD Burner - NO DVD Burner is required! Again, as long as you have a CD burner, you're good to go with this! We've sold software in the past that ONLY did this - and it wasn't cheap! This is INCLUDED!! Absolutely AMAZING!!

Oh, and panoramas! Just take 2 or more shots, one right next to the other with about a 1/3rd overlap. Then, put them into this software and it will stitch them together as an amazing pano shot! If you've never done panoramics - get ready for a treat! You'll love it and this already has all the "expensive" software you need to pull it off - and automatically!

Plus, you've just gotta see the printing features - this is really exciting! This actually allows you to place multiple images of multiple sizes onto a single page! It automatically arranges them so you the maximum number of prints on a page - no more wasted paper! Oh, and another thing - it automatically resizes for printing too! You don't have to manually adjust each and every photo to the size you want - just tell it you want 4x6s (or 5x7s, or whatever) and you're good to go! You'll LOVE it! Printing is actually going to be FUN!!

Here I am getting ready to print a sheet of photos:

By the way, have you ever needed to send a photo via e-mail? Exactly what size should that be? Heck, even if you know the answer, you'd still have to go in and resize your photo, save with a different name, and send it off. Well, this takes ALL the hassle out of it! Just select the usage (on screen viewing - ideal for e-mail, small print, full size) and hit Send! That's it!

Whew, OK, this program can actually do a LOT more than I've listed but I'm guessing you get the idea (and besides, my fingers are getting tired from all this typing)! It's a remarkable program - it makes it incredibly easy for ANYONE of ANY skill level to enhance their photos - and do cool stuff with 'em!

Your price? We're talking just $12.97 for this photo-editing nirvana! You spent a lot of money for your digital camera - why not make the most of the pictures? For this price, you just can't go wrong! Give it a try - you'll be amazed at all you get for less than the price of lunch out!!

Computers 101

Q:
Can you give me any pointers on whether an ink jet printer or a laser printer is better? I'm looking to buy a new printer, but I'd like to hear from you first. Any help would be appreciated!

A:
Well, I feel honored that you would trust WorldStart enough to ask us first. That's so awesome! And I promise I won't let you down. When it comes to buying a new printer, it's best to weigh all your options, because your printer is a big part of your computer life. I mean, whenever you need a hard copy of something from your computer, what do you rely on? Your printer, of course. So, it's very important to get the right one!

In this day and age, probably two of the most popular printers are the ink jet and the laser printers. They're more high tech and they can help you get your print jobs done in a matter of seconds. So, if you're debating over whether to buy an ink jet or a laser, you may want to take a look at the following information. It's time for a little ink jet vs. laser!

Let's start with the ink jet printer. A good ink jet printer will print out quality documents, photos, etc. for you and it comes at an affordable price. (You can usually find a decent ink jet for around the $50 mark). On the other hand though, ink jet printers eat up your ink a lot faster than some of the other printers on the market. And unfortunately, the cost of an ink cartridge is usually about the same price of the printer. So, even though you're getting a pretty good deal on the actual printer, you may end up paying more for it in the long run.

So, let's now take a look at the laser printer. Laser printers tend to cost a little more in the beginning, but they can sometimes be more cost efficient in the end. They don't use as much ink as the ink jet printers do, but they still give you quality work.

Now, you may be wondering how you can choose between the two with the information I've given you. It seems like they both do about the same type of work and they both might end up costing you the same amount in the future. Well, in this situation, you really have to evaluate your printing needs. If you don't print too often (you know, a document here and there), you'll probably be better off with a good ink jet printer. If you don't print very much, you won't be using very much ink and you won't have to change the cartridges as often. And with the ink jet being a less expensive buy, you'll benefit more from that in the long run.

However, if you do print a lot (consistently throughout the day), you may want to think about getting a laser printer. Since laser printers use less ink, you won't have to buy replacements all the time and once you cover the initial cost of the printer, you'll be all set. Laser printers also work much better for businesses that print a lot on a very regular basis.

So, even though both the ink jet and the laser printers are good buys, one might be better than the other for your specific printing needs. Either way you look at it, you're going to get a good quality printer and your print jobs will look amazing. You can't complain about that, now can you? Now, go on and get the printer of your dreams and enjoy all the perks that come along with it!

MS Office

Keeping It Consistent

If you use MS PowerPoint 2007, I'm sure you've found the Themes in the new program editions.

I use PowerPoint a lot and I find the Themes to be a wonderful way to quickly change the look of my presentations. I mean, what could be better? A quick trip to the Design tab on the ribbon, choose a Theme and you get a set of colors, fonts and everything else you could possibly need.

Sounds like a plan to me!

You may have even found the Themes in Word 2007, but did you know you can also apply those Themes in Excel 2007?

In both of those programs, you need to head to the Page Layout tab on the ribbon.

On the far left side, you'll find the button for Themes.

By using them in one, two or three of the programs, you can easily keep formatting aspects consistent, giving your information a polished appearance.

Consistency can definitely be a good thing! If everything switches formatting too often, it can feel like the information doesn't really belong together. Readers who are very visual in the way they process things will really notice inconsistencies and they may focus on the formatting more than the information.

Also, I'm sure we can all agree that focusing their attention on the information is the whole point of your work!

Here's the exciting part about this one! You know what the number one problem is with wireless mice? The stupid batteries ALWAYS die at the worst possible time! I hate that! Having a wireless mouse is fantastic, until it's late, you need to finish something up, your mouse is belly-up, and there's no "AA" batteries to be found. Well, these guys thought of that and created a backup plan - this has a retractable USB cord that you can plug in!

You read that right! Next time your batteries die, just pull out the retractable cable and plug into any free USB port and get right back at it! FINALLY - someone designed a wireless mouse with a brilliant backup plan! When you get new batteries, just retract the cord and you'll never know it's there!

With that said, the above problem is gonna be rare for you because this guy is a big-time battery saver! When this mouse is not in use, it will actually turn off, saving you tons of battery juice! Replacing the batteries will no longer be a weekly ordeal - these batteries you will you a LONG time!

In addition, this mouse uses amazing optical technology! You know what I hate about regular "ball" mice- they collect dirt and dust. Do you remember always having to dig out a Q-tip, take apart the mouse, and delicately clean out that area so it would "roll" correctly? DO you still do that?? Not with this guy - no cleaning necessary!

Now so far this mouse is sounding pretty awesome- but you gotta check this out too! This mouse has a fantastic three button design with a scroll wheel that acts as the third button! This type of design really provides the fastest, most proficient navigating ever! It's like driving a Lamborghini down the information super highway!

Oh, and talk about great quality! Last time we featured this, we got TONS of comments about the amazing quality of this mouse - it feels solid in your hand like it was really built to last! I like it so much I replaced my Logitech mouse with it - I absolutely love the quality and the optional cord has been a life-saver! Wait till you get your hand on it :-)

Think setting up a new mouse is going to be a pain? With this mouse you have absolutely nothing to worry about because it is truly plug and play. There is nothing to install! Just make sure the mouse has two working AA batteries, plug in the USB receiver, and you are all set! It really couldn't get more easy!

And your cost is unbeatable! Get this sweet mouse for just $16.97 and US shipping is FREE! Try it for a few days and you'll agree it's worth 3X that much! Hey, and if you don't love it, send it back to me within 2 months and I'll give you a refund! Nothing to lose - treat yourself to this amazing mouse today!

WOW!! Can't Go Wrong For $6.97! Lowest Price EVER!

OK, One Last Day!

STOP RIGHT THERE!

The Shocking Truth About Your Hard Drive!

Don't Throw Out That Old Hard Drive!!

Don't Give Away Your Old Computer!

You Gotta Read This - It'll Scare The Heck Outta Ya!

News Flash!

Recent studies show that 74% of hard drives sold, given away, or thrown out (in the computer or out) contain data that can be easily read and recovered - and 36% of those hard drives had even been reformatted. You absolutely, positively, have to permanently get that data off of there!!

Do you have an old computer you're thinking about giving away? Maybe an old hard drive that needs to be thrown out? Well, if you do, you MUST GET THAT DATA OFF THERE!!!!

Well, we have some really easy to use software that will keep you safe called DriveScrubber. Just pop the CD into your computer (or make a floppy if you still have a drive for one of those) and reboot. Even if you can't boot to Windows, you can still erase that drive with this software!

Think about it - you wouldn't toss paperwork with credit card, bank, or social security numbers in the trash without shredding the heck out of 'em would you? Of course not! However, day in and day out, people toss out old computers and think that just deleting or formatting a drive is going to get rid of all the personal info they had on it - not a chance!

WARNING - When you delete a file, it's not really gone. You might want to read that last sentence again because it's really important. The area where the file lives on your hard drive simply gets tagged as free space, but until it's overwritten, that data is VERY recoverable. I formatted a test drive and ran recovery software on it awhile ago just to see what would happen. Nearly EVERYTHING was easily recoverable! No problem at all!

If you've ever used your computer to check on your banking, buy a product online, or anything that involves your personal info, then that info might be easily available when you get rid of your old hardware! Yikes!

Don't think it can happen to you? Well, two MIT students did a study. They went and purchased 158 used hard drives for less than $1000 from a web swap-meet type site. When they went through the drives, they found over 5,000 credit card numbers, medical reports, lots of personal and corporate financial information, and gigs of personal e-mail. And get this - 60% of the drives had been formatted!!!

There are people who look for old computers at the curb or in the dumpster just to pull info off the hard drive or sell the drives to others! Plus, if you just "donate" an old computer you have no idea what really is going to happen to it! If this doesn't scare the heck out of you, then you shouldn't be using a computer!

Once you insert the Drive Scrubber disk, your computer will boot to the CD or the floppy, and has an easy to use interface that makes wiping a drive a snap. Just select the drive and select the "erase" button. ALL the info on the drive will be gone - permanently and forever! You can still reformat the drive and install Windows again once this is done - but any info you had on the drive will be completely gone. No worries about anyone ever using your hard drive or old computer to steal you personal info! It's great!

I personally have a couple of old hard drives sitting around that I just didn't want to throw out. Now I'll be able to completely erase them and toss them into the trash knowing that no one will EVER be able to recover any of my personal data from that drive.

Your cost for all this protection? Just $6.97 and US shipping is FREE! Sure, it's not a program that you'll use every day, but everyone with a computer WILL need to use it someday! For this kind of money, it's insane not to be safe. Check it out:

Tip of the Day

Resolving PayPal Disputes

To begin, I have a scenario for you. You see an item you like on eBay and you decide to bid on it. Two days later, you find out you won the item. You decide to pay via PayPal. Sure, that's a great idea! However, when your purchase arrives, it seems as if the seller sent you the wrong item. But when you e-mail the seller to inform them about the mistake, they tell you they don’t offer any refunds. So, besides giving the seller a piece of your mind, what can you do? Well, get PayPal's help, of course!

That's right! When you pay by PayPal, you automatically get a mediation service built in. So, if you have a "PayPal dispute" you'd like to do something about, here’s what you can do!

1.) First, go to www.paypal.com and log in to your account.

2.) Click on the Resolution Center link at the top of the page.

3.) Next, click on Dispute a Transaction.

4.) Now, click either Item Dispute or Unauthorized Transaction (whichever applies to you) and then click Continue.

5.) Enter the transaction ID in to the text box. If you don’t know what the transaction ID is, click on Find Transaction ID, which is located next to the text box.

You’ll then have to enter in your concerns and choose why you’re disputing the transaction from a list of about 20 to 30 reasons. Your dispute will have to go through certain steps, but luckily, PayPal usually sides with the buyer. And even if they don't, it's at least worth a shot. Good luck!

Today's Feature

Monster.com: Hacked

With the economy the way it is these days, I'm sure there are a lot of you out there who are looking for jobs. Many people who are on the job hunt begin their search by using the Web. Often, the first place to start looking for a job on the Internet is the very popular job site of Monster.com.

Unfortunately, in times like this, when people are using Monster in record numbers, hackers are also trying harder and harder to get their hands on Monster's information. Just a few days ago (on January 23, 2009), Monster was hacked and some of their customers' user information was put at risk. According to Monster.com, their database, with their customers' user information, was compromised. That means the usernames, passwords, e-mail addresses and names that were used have fallen into the wrong hands. While Monster said sensitive information, such as Social Security numbers, weren't leaked, they're still taking precautions.

On January 28, 2009, Monster put a security measure into place that forces all users who could have been compromised to change their password on their next log in. That will correct the issue with security on the Web site, but it doesn't change the fact that the hackers have gotten ahold of some passwords and e-mail addresses.

If you've used Monster.com in the past, you should keep your eyes open for fraudulent e-mails coming your way. Those e-mails may know personal information about you, such as your address, Monster username and password. Keep in mind that no company will ever ask you for your password or personal information through an e-mail. If you think an e-mail is fraudulent, you shouldn't respond. Instead, you should open your Web browser and go directly to the company's Web site that contacted you. That way, you know who you're really doing business with. Until next time, stay safe out there, my friends!
