Quick Tips

E-mail Recall

We've all done it before. We prepare an e-mail message and we're 100 percent sure it's ready to be sent off, but as soon as we click the Send button, we realize we made a big mistake! Either you addressed it to the wrong person, you forgot some important information or you forgot to make some minor corrections. Whatever the case may be, you're probably wondering if there's any way you can recall that e-mail and try again.

Well, to be honest, there really isn't. Unfortunately, in most e-mail programs, once the e-mail is sent, there's no way to retrieve it again. There's no way to do it in Outlook Express or any of the more popular Web based e-mail clients, such as Yahoo!, Hotmail, Gmail or AOL. The only program that allows it is Microsoft Outlook. If you're one of the lucky ones who uses Outlook, you can read here for instructions on how to do that.

As for the rest of us, what can we do? First off, forget about getting the e-mail back, because it's just not going to happen. Once it's sent, it's gone. However, there are a few things you can do to prevent it from ever happening again. One of the best things to do is address the e-mail last. Go ahead and type out your e-mail first and put the recipient's e-mail address in the To: line last. Your e-mail program won't send the e-mail without an address, so once you see that, it will make you think harder about who you're sending it to. Also, that may lead you to look over the e-mail one more time so that you can make sure it's error free. So, even though you can't get certain e-mails back, you can keep yourself from making the same mistake twice. Yes!

February Wallpaper!

Here's this month's free calendar wallpaper! As always, it's 100% free, so head on over and grab one!

Snowy Deer

This girl was in a group that I managed to slip into. It was snowing pretty good and she was curious about me and got within 8 feet for this close-up! If this isn't a February shot, I don't know what is!

Moonrise

I shot this just last month in the Valley Of Fire State Park - just about an hour from Las Vegas. We were going to another spot just down the road, but couldn't resist stopping for this shot. Timing on one like this is really tough, so dumb luck came to my rescue.

Summer Stream

Here's one that's a little different. It was shot in the Smokies last summer, but instead of giving you the straight shot, I added a soft-focus / dreamy effect to it. I hope you enjoy it!

All can be found here:

PLUS Save 74% By Getting It From US Today!!! WOW!!

WOW!! These are sellin' like virtual hotcakes! 1000+ of these fantastic gadgets flew out the door last week and people are still ordering like crazy! THANK YOU to everyone who ordered! If you've been missin' out, then you owe it to yoruself to check this one out! You''ll want one too!!

I'm so excited! We have an absolutely amazing deal on a little gadget from Memorex called a TravelSync that's going to change the way you deal with your files forever! This ingenious little gadget allows you to effortlessly transfer data from one USB device to another - and get this - you do it without any computer involved! Really!

Why is this so cool? Why am I so excited? Why are you gonna love this? Let's consider a few scenarios that happen all the time!

First, have you ever ran out of memory on your digital camera's card? Sure, everyone's taken that train to frustrationville! Wouldn't be fantastic if you could simply transfer your pictures to a USB flash drive and empty that card without the hassle of getting a computer out? Am I crazy? Nope -  With this handy gadget, you just plug your camera in on one side, then stick in a flash drive on the other side!  Press a button and your images are magically transferred right from your camera to the flash drive - no computer necessary! Then, just clear your card and keep on shooting (you can even have this device clear your card after you're done if you like!)!

Memorex TravelSync Portable Transfer Device

Ooohh, yeah - here's one that happens ALL the time - and we've all been there! Have you ever needed a copy of a file someone else has? You know, maybe you just need a copy of a document, maybe you want a quick copy of a photo, maybe a favorite song - whatever. It may be on a friend's flash drive, camera, MP3 player - you name it, but you want that file!

Well, with this you just plug in the device that has the file on one side (could be a flash drive camera, external HD, memory card, ect) then select the file you want from the list. Next, plug in your flash drive (or whatever USB storage you prefer) into the other side and a couple button presses later you have the file! Seriously - No booting up the computer, no opening up the flash drive, no copying the file over to the desktop, no opening up the other flash drive, no copying to the new flash drive, no shutting down! Once you go the direct copy route with this little guy, you'll never go back!!

OK, want another example? What about this - do you have a external hard drive for backups or extra storage? With this, you could actually transfer your photos, files, music, ect directly to your hard drive from your camera (flash drive, memory card, MP3 player) without ever booting up your computer! Talk about a time saver (and a brilliant way to do quick backups)!

Oh, and what if you come home from a trip with a bunch of memory cards in your pocket you want to backup to that same external HD? Don't mess with your computer - just plug a memory card reader into one side of your TravelSync and your HD into the other! Again, just a button press or two and your files are all transferred from your card reader to the external HD! Couldn't be easier! This would be just spectacular if you're on the road and want to quickly backup those once-in-a-lifetime trip photos on a portable HD!!

It's not just for photos either! Got MP3s? Then you'll LOVE this! You want to transfer the music on your MP3 player to another MP3 player? Guess what? This can transfer your files with no computer required! WAIT! Want to put your MP3s on a flash drive, external HD, or memory card? Yup, you guessed it - this is your go to device!

Here's The Bottom Line - If you have USB devices that store data (memory cards, flash drives, digital cameras, MP3 players, external hard drives, ect) this can transfer that data from one device to another with NO computer necessary! This is such an ingenious idea! I don't know how many times I just needed a copy of a file and had to mess around with my computer to do all the copying! This makes it easy!

PLUS, it's incredibly easy to use! Most operations are just a couple button pushes away from being done! Even lets you copy everything or selected files - and the LCD screen makes it simple!

This is really one of those devices that once you have it, you'll wonder how you lived without it!

How much do these go for?  You won't believe your price, but first I gotta tell you "their" prices! Get this - right this second Memorex has these listed on their site for $50 and Amazon is at $48.99! Looking around, I couldn't find ANYONE less than $41 for these things - and pretty much everyone was charging shipping on top of it! And frankly, it's really worth the money they're asking too - it's that good. But....

Your cost is absolutely unbelievable! We're talking just $12.97 and US shipping is FREE! That's not a typo - $12.97 gets you this absolutely amazing, incredibly handy $50 device!! RUN to the site and get this while you can! One of the handiest gadgets we've ever offered!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4890

PS - As you can imagine, quantities on this are limited and we're thinking that, yeah, these are gonna sell pretty quick! Get to the site before they gone - you don't want to WISH you had one later!

Computers 101

Q:
I just bought a computer from a friend of mine and they didn't know a whole lot about it. Therefore, I don't even know which operating system it has. How can I determine that?

A:
Don't feel bad! That sort of thing happens to a lot of people. Whenever you make a deal on a computer from a friend or family member, chances are, you're not going to know much about it until you start investigating. And while there's nothing wrong with that, it can be a bit frustrating until you figure some things out. Another situation could be that you bought a computer a long time ago, but never really used it. You may not remember certain things from way back when.

Either way, one of the most important things you need to know about a computer is what operating system it is running under. Without that information, you won't be able to do certain things, you won't know which programs will and won't work, etc. So, it's pertinent for you to find out that little piece of information first. While that sounds easy enough to do, you may not be sure how to go about checking on it. Well, I'm here to help you out with that, so let's get started!

There are a couple of ways you can do this with any computer. Now, before you begin, you must know that the computer does have a version of Windows. It can't be a Mac or be using Linux, etc. If the computer has anything other than Windows, this tip won't work.

Okay, here's the easiest way to check which operating system you have. Go to Start, Run and type in "winver" (without the quotes). Press Enter on your keyboard. That will bring up a new window that has all the information about your computer's operating system. It will give you the version (98, 2000, XP, etc.), the build information and the Service Pack version, if one is installed. It will look something like this:

Now, there are other ways you can go about doing this as well, just in case you couldn't get it to come up with the above directions. For one, right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop and choose Properties. Under the General tab, you will see the operating system information and some data on the actual computer. What you see here is a little different from all that you get with the first option, but it still gives you the basics.

The next one I have for you works if you're using a mobile device for your computer (it's probably rare, but it might just help some of you out). If you have Windows CE on either a cell phone or a PDA, you can find out which version you have by going to Start, Control Panel. Click on the Systems icon under the System Properties section and you'll see from there which version of Windows CE you have. It will also give you some of the build information.

Either way you do it, you'll be able to find the information you're looking for and you can then be on your way to making the computer you want to have. It's nice to have options, isn't it?!

MS Office

The Case of the Missing Ruler

Today's tip comes from a recent question posed by a reader. It seems as if, while working in MS Word on a letterhead template, the reader realized the vertical ruler on the left side of the screen was missing.

So, the obvious questions were "Where did it go?" and "How do I get it back?"

While I can't be positive as to the exact steps taken by any user to create a situation, I do have an educated guess!

In older versions of Word (not the 2007 version), there's a Normal View choice located in the View window.

That view doesn't tend to show as much while editing as the Print Layout view does. For example, it doesn't display headers or footers on the page and it only shows the horizontal ruler across the top of the page.

If you want to see the vertical ruler, you need to switch to the Print Layout view under the View menu.

That view displays both rulers, allowing you to double check that the vertical spacing is correct for items such as letterheads and other special papers.

Case closed!

STOP RIGHT THERE!

The Shocking Truth About Your Hard Drive!

Don't Throw Out That Old Hard Drive!!

Don't Give Away Your Old Computer!

You Gotta Read This - It'll Scare The Heck Outta Ya!

News Flash!

Recent studies show that 74% of hard drives sold, given away, or thrown out (in the computer or out) contain data that can be easily read and recovered - and 36% of those hard drives had even been reformatted. You absolutely, positively, have to permanently get that data off of there!!

Do you have an old computer you're thinking about giving away? Maybe an old hard drive that needs to be thrown out? Well, if you do, you MUST GET THAT DATA OFF THERE!!!!

Well, we have some really easy to use software that will keep you safe called DriveScrubber. Just pop the CD into your computer (or make a floppy if you still have a drive for one of those) and reboot. Even if you can't boot to Windows, you can still erase that drive with this software!

Think about it - you wouldn't toss paperwork with credit card, bank, or social security numbers in the trash without shredding the heck out of 'em would you? Of course not! However, day in and day out, people toss out old computers and think that just deleting or formatting a drive is going to get rid of all the personal info they had on it - not a chance!

WARNING - When you delete a file, it's not really gone. You might want to read that last sentence again because it's really important. The area where the file lives on your hard drive simply gets tagged as free space, but until it's overwritten, that data is VERY recoverable. I formatted a test drive and ran recovery software on it awhile ago just to see what would happen. Nearly EVERYTHING was easily recoverable! No problem at all!

If you've ever used your computer to check on your banking, buy a product online, or anything that involves your personal info, then that info might be easily available when you get rid of your old hardware! Yikes!

Don't think it can happen to you? Well, two MIT students did a study. They went and purchased 158 used hard drives for less than $1000 from a web swap-meet type site. When they went through the drives, they found over 5,000 credit card numbers, medical reports, lots of personal and corporate financial information, and gigs of personal e-mail. And get this - 60% of the drives had been formatted!!!

There are people who look for old computers at the curb or in the dumpster just to pull info off the hard drive or sell the drives to others! Plus, if you just "donate" an old computer you have no idea what really is going to happen to it! If this doesn't scare the heck out of you, then you shouldn't be using a computer!

Once you insert the Drive Scrubber disk, your computer will boot to the CD or the floppy, and has an easy to use interface that makes wiping a drive a snap. Just select the drive and select the "erase" button. ALL the info on the drive will be gone - permanently and forever! You can still reformat the drive and install Windows again once this is done - but any info you had on the drive will be completely gone. No worries about anyone ever using your hard drive or old computer to steal you personal info! It's great!

I personally have a couple of old hard drives sitting around that I just didn't want to throw out. Now I'll be able to completely erase them and toss them into the trash knowing that no one will EVER be able to recover any of my personal data from that drive.

Your cost for all this protection? Just $6.97 and US shipping is FREE! Sure, it's not a program that you'll use every day, but everyone with a computer WILL need to use it someday! For this kind of money, it's insane not to be safe. Check it out:

What's the Version?

So, tell me, do you know the version number for all the different programs and applications you use on your computer? If you said yes, I'm very impressed, but I'm guessing most of you said no. I mean, do you even know where to look for the version number? It's usually printed on the disc somewhere, but sometimes it's hidden or it's just really hard to find. Well, if you'd like some help in finding your version numbers and getting them all written down, you've got to read through the tip on our homepage today. It's all the help you need!

Tip of the Day

Web 2.0

So, tell me, have you heard about Web 2.0? It’s a term you see applied to a lot of Web sites on the Internet these days, but today, I’m going to go a little more in depth about its meaning. Web 2.0 describes the changing trend in the use of the World Wide Web technology and Web design that aims to enhance creativity, communications, secure information sharing, collaboration and functionality of the Web. Those Web 2.0 concepts have led to the development of Web communities, social networking sites (MySpace and Facebook), video sharing sites (YouTube), wikis (Wikipedia) and blogs (Blogger). Wow! You probably use Web 2.0 Web sites more than you thought, am I right? Well, let's learn even more about it!

A Web 2.0 Web site doesn’t have any technical specifications. It refers to the revolution of using the Internet as a platform. That is, using a Web site to perform a task instead of a program on an operating system. The 2.0 refers to a rebirth after the end of the 2001 dot com bubble, which I’m sure you heard about in one way or another.

In addition to the popular ones listed above, we’ve covered many Web 2.0 Web sites in the WorldStart newsletter in the past. Just to name a few, Rollyo, Passpack, Project Playlist, Remember the Milk and RSSFWD. If you're interested in learning more about Web 2.0, this link has a complete directory of 2.0 Web sites. Check it out!

Phone Spam Filter

Telemarketers seem to be even more annoying these days! Not only do they call you during dinner time, but they manage to get their hands on your cell phone number and they gladly start bothering you there as well. Plus, the calls on your cell phone eat up your minutes and cost you extra money. What a nightmare!

But not anymore! Now, you can do your part to help stop telemarketers. It's really easy too! All you have to do is type the telephone number of the telemarketer into the blank box on the left hand side of the page. Then click Go.

If the phone number comes up and there's already a complaint for it, you can add your complaint by clicking on the Submit your Own Complaint About the Number link. That will take you to a form to fill out about the telemarketing calls you receive.

If it isn’t in the database, you follow the same process and fill out the form. Or, you can skip that and just click on the Complain tab near the top of the page. You can then fill out the form from there.

You can also browse the database by area code or do a reverse look up with the links at the top of the page.

Note: If you click into any section on the right side of the page, you’ll find the Latest News. There you can read articles about telemarketing fraud and changes in the laws surrounding telemarketing.

Start fighting back against telemarketers today!

Monthly Wallpaper

February Wallpaper!

Here's this month's free wallpaper! As always, it's 100% free, so head on over and grab one!

Snowy Deer

This girl was in a group that I managed to slip into. It was snowing pretty good and she was curious about me and got within 8 feet for this closeup!
