Computer Tips [ 5 Signs You're Infected + Awesome Taskbar Trick + Make Eye Catching Designs ] 10/22/08

Quick Tips

Let's Refresh

Today's quick tip may seem a little basic for some of you, but I think a lot of you out there will appreciate this. I get e-mails and even phone calls all the time about such procedures like copy, paste and cut. Since I receive so many requests about those things, I thought it would be a good idea to take a step back and go over them one more time. So, if you ever have trouble doing those little tasks, listen up, because this tip is dedicated to you! We'll go over the basics of copying, pasting, cutting and maybe even a couple others. Here we go!

Let's begin with copying. There are a couple different ways you can copy something on your computer. Both are pretty easy to do, so you'll just have to decide which one you prefer. But, before you can do anything else, you have to figure out what you want to copy. Once you've done that, click your mouse button, hold it down and drag it over what you'd like to copy. It will then be highlighted. You can then either right click and choose Copy or you can hit Ctrl + C on your keyboard. Next up is the paste function. It always comes after the copy, because you have to have something copied so that you can paste it. Go to where you'd like to paste your material (in an e-mail, a Word document, etc.) and click your mouse once. Then you can either right click and choose Paste or hit Ctrl + V on your keyboard. That's all there is to it!

Some of the other commands you all sometimes ask about are cut and undo. I promise both of those functions are rather simple too, so let's go over them right now. If you ever want to cut something out (a portion of text, a picture, etc.) of what you're working on, all you have to do is highlight it and then you can either right click and choose Cut or hit Ctrl + X on your keyboard. That part of your document will then disappear. Now, what if you're working on something and you make a mistake? You probably want to undo it, right? Well, the easiest way to do that is to hit Ctrl + Z on your keyboard. That combination will automatically undo what you just did. Cool, huh? Yep, just a couple mouse clicks or a few taps on your keyboard will take you a long way!

Computers 101

Q:
I have a quick question about the fans in my computer. I'm not sure if they're working properly. Can you give me some information on how they should be acting? Thank you for your help!

A:
That's an excellent question and I'm so glad you asked! I'm sure you're not the only one who has ever wondered about this either. So, in a sense, I'll be taking care of two birds with one stone by helping you and everyone else who reads this tip. I love it when it works out that way! Well, let's not waste any more time and get right into it. Go!

I know every computer is different, but most of them usually have a heatsink fan and some case fans. All of the fans work to keep your computer protected so that it doesn't overheat or become inoperable. Let's start with an explanation of the heatsink fan.

Basically, the heatsink fan usually works right along with your CPU and it helps monitor the motherboard, video card and any other circuit boards that may work with your computer. The heatsink fan should always be blowing any heat away from the components I mentioned above. Its main purpose is to give the heat an escape route out of the computer case so that it doesn't damage any of the circuits inside. For example, if your motherboard was hit with too much heat, it's possible it would stop working. And well, you need the motherboard to be able to use your computer, so you don't want that to happen!

So, while the heatsink fan is doing its job of blowing the air out, the case fans are working just as hard. How your case fans work depends on how your chassis is set up. Chassis is just another word for your computer case. It's the housing unit that holds all of your computer's components together. So, depending on how yours is laid out, the case fans will either be blowing the air out or sucking it in. Allow me to explain a little more!

If your computer case only has one fan, it will more than likely be located in the back. In that case, the fan will be blowing hot air out. Now, another common configuration is to have one fan in the back and another in the front. In that instance, the fan in the back will be blowing hot air out while the fan in the front is sucking cooler air in. By default, your computer case brings cool air in from the front, because it's not constrained and it's more of an open area. So, once that cool air is sucked in by the front fan, it's blown out by the back fan once it's heated up. Interesting, huh? It's like this:

If you're still a little confused, all you really need to remember is if your computer case has two fans, one should always be sucking air in while the other is blowing it out. That's the best configuration to use to keep your computer in proper working condition. The heatsink fan will always work on its own to blow hot air out, because it works in such close conjunction with all the major components of your computer.

That's it. Now you know exactly how the fans work for your computer. Who knew there was so much going on inside that little case?!

MS Office

Hassle Free SmartArt Setup

Do you use the MS Office 2007 SmartArt?

If so, you know how easy it can be to create eye catching diagrams for things such as lists, processes, hierarchies and relationships.

Also, if you've been experimenting with SmartArt, you've probably found how to add more shapes to your diagram from the Design tab of the SmartArt Tools that open on the ribbon.

While I find the process fairly easy, I definitely get tired of all the mouse clicks from shape to shape to enter text and insert extra shapes when they're needed.

Fortunately, while doing one of my usual "let's click everywhere and see what I can find" moments, I ran into something called the Text Pane and boy was I thrilled with my discovery!

The next time you're looking at your Smart Art, take a look at the border on the left side. Do you see the arrows?

Clicking on the arrows is a quick way to get to the Text Pane.

You could also use the Text Pane button found under the Design tab of the SmartArt Tools on the ribbon.

Either way, here's what you'll get:

Instead of clicking from shape to shape, you can enter your text directly into the pane and the program will do all the work for you.

If you add a new bullet to the outline, MS Office automatically inserts the shape for you, resizes everything appropriately and keeps the SmartArt information in the order your Text Pane displays.

If you need to remove a shape, simply delete its line from the Text Pane and poof! The shape is instantly removed from your diagram and everything is resized to fit appropriately.

With your cursor on a line in the Text Pane, you can use the Tab key to demote a shape to be subordinate to the one above it and the Shift + Tab keys to promote a shape up one level.

Again, Office does all the work of changing the formatting to keep everything in proper order.

When you have what you need, close the Text Pane and proceed with any formatting still to be done.

If you use SmartArt, I definitely recommend you take a couple of minutes to give this one a try. I've found that it saves me tons of time, not to mention I love it when a really useful and simple thing gets even easier to use!

Tip of the Day

Multi-Monitor Taskbar

This one's for all you dual screen users out there! I've had dual screen monitors for my Windows XP computer for about two years now and I love them. Most computer users usually keep two or three windows open in the background, but dual monitors allow you to keep them all in sight. It’s really neat! And today, I’m going to show you something I didn't even know was possible. Prepare to be amazed by Oscar’s Multi-Monitor Taskbar!

The Multi-Monitor Taskbar (or Multi-Mon) is a free program that can solve a few of the dilemmas that dual monitor users encounter. Once you download the program, I’ll show you all of the features Multi-Mon has to offer.

The download link for Multi-Mon can be found right here. Just download it and follow the installation process.

In the past, you’ve probably noticed that it doesn't matter which monitor a program is opened on, because Windows places all of the taskbar items on the primary monitor. But, after you download Multi-Mon, a second taskbar is placed on the secondary monitor. The taskbar has the Windows 98 theme, but it still works like a charm! You’ll notice that Multi-Mon automatically knows when a window is moved to another monitor and therefore, changes the taskbar it's displayed on. Pretty cool, huh?!

Another annoyance most dual monitor users have to deal with is moving windows from one screen to another. Sometimes it’s as easy as a drag and drop, but other times, it requires resizing the window multiple times until it fits the right way. What a pain! Another thing Multi-Mon does is add a third button to the upper right hand corner of every window. That button is the Switch Monitor button and if you press it, the window jumps right over to the opposite screen.

One of my favorite features Multi-Mon provides is the clipboard extender. Have you ever wanted to have a few different items on your clipboard at the same time? Well, every time you copy something to the clipboard, it's added to the Extender’s list. You can then pick and choose which text strings you want to paste.

Also, Multi-Mon has support for triple monitor users if there are any of you out there. If you really like Multi-Mon, I recommend downloading the shareware version. It includes both the Windows XP and Vista themes and so much more. You can see all of them right here. Enjoy!

Today's Feature

Signs of Malware

You all know there are millions of malware infections out there today. It seems as if there are tons of new infections that pop up everyday. In the past, I've written about how antivirus software and anti-spyware software don't always find all of the infections on your computer. After writing that article, I received several e-mails asking, "How do I know if I have a virus?" Well, today, I will cover some of the signs your computer will show if it's possibly infected with a virus or some other type of malware.

1.) Your computer slows down majorly. If your system slows down drastically, you may have an infection. Viruses and adware use resources on your computer. They can destroy files, send spam e-mail, redirect your browser and many other things that will slow your computer down.

2.) Internet browser crash. If your Internet browser stops working or shuts down often, you may be infected. Since most malware programs use the Internet to spread themselves, they will affect the performance of your browser. If your Internet browser just starts closing with no warning, you need to check for viruses.

3.) Random e-mails. Many viruses spread through e-mail. If you use an e-mail client, such as Outlook Express, MS Outlook or Thunderbird, a virus could infect it and start sending spam e-mail out to all your contacts. If you start to receive strange e-mails like "Message Undeliverable" or "Mailer Deamon," a virus may be sending e-mail with your address.

4.) Error messages at startup. If you start receiving error messages when you turn your computer on, you may have some type of malware infection. Malware programs usually turn on at startup and they sometimes cause errors, so you need to keep an eye out for that.

5.) Things look "strange." I know that seems a little vague, but sometimes you open something and it just looks funny. If you didn't install something or make a change to your system, there's no reason why something would change. Computers don't make decisions on their own. If something has changed and you didn't initiate it, you should scan for viruses and malware.

Those are the five most common signs of an infection. Many of them may indicate a virus, but that doesn't necessarily mean you're infected.

Some of the signs could indicate a hardware issue or a program conflict. As a general rule, if you know of a recent change that caused the actions, it's probably not a virus. If the signs happen for no reason at all, you should be concerned and get your computer checked. Until next time, stay safe out there, my friends!

Frog Leap Test

My mom actually e-mailed me this Web site and once I finally solved it, I decided it would be a lot of fun to share with all of you. Are you ready to take the Frog Leap Test? It's a challenge that's commonly given to second graders. I think it still takes me about six tries to solve it though!

What you have to do is move the frogs on the left to where the frogs are on the right and vice versa. They made the left frogs green and the ones on the right are brown.

The frogs can only jump forward and you can only move them one space at a time. Did I mention you only have two minutes to move them? When you’re stuck, you can restart the challenge by clicking on the red arrow button in the left hand corner. But when you beat it, a little banner comes up on your screen!

Okay, it's your turn now. Defeat the frog challenge and then pass it on to all of your friends!

Undine Falls

Yeah, strange name, but good falls! I'd like to say I had to hike 12 miles into the backcountry to get this shot, but this was taken probably about 10 yards from the parking lot. Worth the quick stop!

Lamar Valley Trees

I took this a couple weeks ago in Yellowstone. The trees looked too good to pass up!

Antelope on the Lookout

This guy was busy chasing around a couple girls, so he wasn't too concerned about me. I was able to get pretty close and he was fun to watch. That's for sure!

Terms of Use

Personal & Educational Use Only This blog consists mainly of FREE newsletters from computer web gurus that I receive. I thought you might like to see them all in one place than try to discover them on your own. A moderate amount of editing may be done to eliminate unrelated repetitious ads or unnecessary text which bloat the post. However I have given the authors full credit and will not remove their site links because you deserve to see where it comes from and they deserve to get credit for what they have written. Your use of this site is simply for educational purposes. For more computer-related help go to: CPEDLEY.COM for free software, advice and tips on low cost products which are very helpful. If you want to contact the editor, please go CPEDLEY.COM and check the Contact page for email address.
