Quick Tips

What if I like my Desktop Messy?

Windows XP users are accustomed to having the balloon pop up that says” There are unused icons on your desktop”, right? But what if I like my desktop the way it is and don't want to be bothered with these messages anymore?

In that case, I bear good news, everyone! You can turn it off!

Here's how:

Right click on the desktop and choose “Properties”. In the next window click the desktop tab at the top and then the “Customize Desktop” button.

Under the “General” tab you'll see Desktop Cleanup towards the bottom of the window. Just uncheck the “Run Desktop Cleanup Wizard every 60 days” selection and click OK. No fuss, no muss, and your Windows XP experience just got a little less annoying!

An AMAZING DEAL!!!

Check Out This 3-Button, OPTICAL Scroll Mouse!!

Just $8.97! Yeah I Know! It's A Jaw-Dropper!

3 Button Mouse

It's Time To Bring Some Speed, and FUN To Your Computer!!!

This is a PS/2, OPTICAL mouse! If you're not sure what that means, don't worry - it's simple to understand and you'll LOVE what it'll mean for your computer use!

The older type of mouse had a little "ball" underneath the mouse. And when you moved the mouse, the ball would move and the ball would move and cause your mouse cursor to move. This was a "mechanical" type of action and it wasn't very accurate. I remember having to give it a giggle every once in a while 'cause the ball would get stuck. Then you'd have to open up the bottom and clean it out 'cause lint, dust and other debris would always stick to the ball, causing even MORE problems! But that's old technology...thank goodness!

Fast-forward to today, we now have "optical" technology, which Instead of using the mechanical movement of a ball, it uses "a light signal", or "optics"! The result is that the mouse is MUCH FASTER, more ACCURATE and just a whole lot easier to use! (And so a whole lot more fun to work with!) That's why this technology is LIGHT-YEARS ahead (no pun intended!) of the "ball-type" mouse! (Or "ball-and-chain"- type mouse, as it's more accurately called at times!)

PLUS, this is "ergonomically designed", so it'll fit nicely in your hand and it won't feel like you're rolling a tennis ball all over your desk! And it has a "scroll wheel" between the right and left buttons, which is nice! You can just move the scroll wheel instead of having to use the "scroll bar" along the side of a web page when you need to navigate up and down! The power of choice...it's a beautiful thing!

So, bottom line, if you've been using that old ball-type mouse, now's you're chance to break free of those shackles and have REAL COMPUTER FREEDOM!! And if you've been using an optical mouse for a while, here's a chance to get a "back-up" mouse at a SUPER low, or dare I say, "cheap" price! We have NEVER had a mouse, ANY MOUSE, at this low of a price before! Not to mention an OPTICAL MOUSE!! Actually, we're gonna try something to see how close you're paying attention. So here we go: Today, you can grab this super deal for only $8.97!!! and US Shipping is FREE!!! $8.97!! There...I said it again! Yep that's the REAL DEAL, and I do mean deal! Heck, most places would charge you half of that just on shipping!!! And if you drove to a store, you'd burn up half of that on gas, not even including your time! So, don't pass this one up - not at this low price!

P.S. - Grab this deal today and "get a grip" on out-of-control computer costs!

image

Oh yeah...This Makes Checking Your Tire Pressure A Breeze!!!

Everybody knows you should keep your tires properly inflated because IT SAVES BIG BUCKS!!! In fact, here's what US Dept of Energy has to say about it, "You can improve your gas mileage by around 3.3 percent by keeping your tires inflated to the proper pressure. Under-inflated tires can lower gas mileage by 0.3 percent for every 1 psi drop in pressure of all four tires."

But that's not all... UNDER INFLATED TIRES WEAR FASTER... And THAT'S BIG BUCKS TOO! But probably MOST IMPORTANT of all is safety: PROPERLY INFLATED TIRES ARE SAFER!!!

We all know these things. But here's the question: "How can you check your tires QUICKLY, EASILY and REMEMBER TO DO IT REGULARLY?

Well, here's your answer: This DIGITAL TIRE GAUGE is fast and so simple to use! Press the button to turn it on and place the gauge over the tire valve and READ THE DIGITAL READ OUT! And what I really like about it is that it's compact and lightweight! PLUS it has a Key Ring so YOU CAN KEEP THIS ON YOUR OWN KEY RING!!! (How easy is that??) How often have you WANTED TO CHECK YOUR TIRE PRESSURE but you just didn't have a tire gauge around? Now you've got it right where you need it!

ALSO, You can use this on motorcycles or even bicycles! Give one to the kids and LET THEM KEEP TRACK OF THE TIRE PRESSURE ON THEIR BIKES! You might want to keep an extra one on a hook in the garage so it's handy for everyone! And at this ridiculously low price, you can grab a couple 'cause today we've got these for an AMAZING price of just $9.97 and US shipping is FREE!!! Q:
How do I insert a hyperlink in an e-mail?

A:
Have you ever needed to hyperlink something in an e-mail, but just weren't sure how to do it? Okay, let me back up for just a second first. You might be wondering what a hyperlink is. In case you don't already know, a hyperlink is just another word for a link. It's the colored link within a text document that you can click on to be taken to a Web site or to an e-mail.

Now that you know exactly what I'm talking about, let's learn how to create one of your own in an e-mail. You can do this whenever you want to share a certain Web site address with someone or if you want to give them someone else's e-mail address. You can go ahead and have it linked for your recipient, so all they have to do is click on it and they'll be whisked away to the right spot in no time! It's very convenient.

In most e-mail programs, you can type out a URL (for example, www.worldstart.com) and it will automatically hyperlink for you as soon as you hit the space bar. If for some reason it doesn't, you can do it manually as well. To do this, start a new e-mail and when you're ready for the hyperlink, click on the icon that looks like a globe with a chainlink around it.

It looks like this:

A box will then appear and you just have to type in the URL yourself. If it's a Web site, make sure you have http:// selected and if it's an e-mail address, have mailto: chosen. Click OK when you're done and the link will then show up in your e-mail. It will then be transferred to your recipient for easy opening.

Now, one more thing. If for some reason you can't click on the hyperlink icon, you can always go to the Insert menu, Hyperlink choice. That will bring up the same dialogue box for you and you will be able to get the link in place.

I did find out a couple of other things while I was researching this tip. Gmail does have the hyperlink option, but the icon in that program is just a chainlink. It doesn't have the globe, so if you use Gmail, keep an eye out for that. Also, I wasn't able to find a way to hyperlink in Hotmail. I may have passed over it, but there wasn't any real obvious way to do it.

Like I said, most e-mail programs will hyperlink automatically for you, so you usually don't have to worry about it. But, if the situation does arise, you'll know how to complete the task yourself now!

Happy hyperlinking!

~ Erin

MS Office

Select The Shape Using The Text?

If you're a fan of the SmartArt feature in Office 2007 then you may have experienced the frustration of trying to select a single shape in the diagram.

Or worse yet, when you're looking to select several shapes and you have the Ctrl + click thing down, too bad you keep accidentally clicking on something already selected… which deselects it, of course.

At this point you've got to be wondering if there's another way to select shapes in the diagram - one that doesn't require aspirin for the headache you have when you're done.

As expected, there is something we can do to make life a bit easier so let's take a look.

We've previously discussed the text pane that is attached to each SmartArt graphic. It's in this pane that you can use a bulleted list to type the text for the diagram. Office will then place the text into the individual shapes - much faster - and certainly a lot less clicking.

You can open the text pane either with the arrows that appear on the left side of the SmartArt when it's selected or you could try the Text Pane button located on SmartArt Tools, Design tab of the Ribbon.

Either way, you should be looking at something like this:

(The left side is the text pane and the right is the SmartArt. You can see that the text of "two" is selected and if you look at the dark blue gear you'll see that it's selected as well.)

Usually we're in here to enter text but this little gadget works "both" ways. That is, with the text already entered you can use it to select individual shapes.

  • Selecting a single shape in the diagram can be done by placing your cursor anywhere in the shape's text.
  • You can select multiple shapes with the Shift or Ctrl keys while you highlight. It works the same as all selection does with these keys.

Once the shapes are selected you can accomplish whatever formatting you had in mind - without the fuss and frustration of the individual selection can cause.

Lamp SensorNew Amazing Lamp Sensors Come On At Dusk And Off At Dawn!

Works On Lights Indoors And Out!

Better Than A Timer

And More Convenient Too!!!

Wait til You See The Special Price!!!

Personally, I like the idea putting my lights on a timer, for a couple of reasons. Number one, I don't like to come home to a dark house. But also, leaving no lights on in the house is an open invitation to prowlers. Might as well hang a big sign out front, "Hey!! Over here!! No one's home!!!) So I like the idea of using them and have been for years. And maybe you have too.

Here's what I DON'T like about 'em though: you have to adjust them according to when the sun comes up and goes down (or you waste a lot of money by having lights on during the day when it's not necessary.) So there I'd go scootin' under end tables crawling' around to adjust those dials. And then those dials are SO SMALL! A simple thing like that ends up turning into a 1/2 hour project!

And then I found these - Lamp Sensors! And when I did, "the light bulb definitely went on", and I knew these were gonna be fantastic! Oh yessss! Just what the doctor ordered! These work on the same principle as those mechanical timers - they turn the light on and off automatically. The difference, and IT IS A BIG DIFFERENCE! is that these sensors turn on at dusk and off at sunrise...AUTOMATICALLY! The SENSOR "senses" the presence of daylight and THAT'S how these work. So, what this means for mean (and you!) is that it doesn't matter if it's "Daylight Savings" or the sun comes up early, goes down late....I don't care! At least I don't care about having to run around like a madman and adjust those timers to "adjust" them going on and off because of the change of seasons. These sensors do it for me!!! Well, la-de-da!!!

Here's another thing I like about these Lamp Sensors: I wanted to have the outside porch light go on and off with a timer but guess what? The timers I used had to plug into an AC outlet and then the lamp would plug into the timer! That doesn't work with a porch light 'cause there's no plug! At least not with mine. So those timers wouldn't work! These Lamp Sensors DON'T NEED TO BE PLUGGED INTO AN OUTLET! So, THEY CAN WORK ON THOSE PORCH LIGHTS!!!

Better yet, they are sooo easy to to install! All you have to do is screw them into your lamp's socket and then screw your light bulb into the sensor! There are no screws or tools involved! :-) Better yet, you will never walk into a dark house again!

So, now I can have have the lights on, only when I need them (when it's dark outside!) and so I'm not wasting electricity! Kind of like having my cake and eating it too! And having those porch lights on are especially great when you go out of town! Think about THAT one for a second! Potential robbers usually don't suspect you're away when the lights automatically turn on and off...especially the PORCH LIGHT!! I look at this is like the most inexpensive home security system you could ever get!

Saving money and convenience - gotta love it! And I know you're gonna love these too! Especially when you see this amazing deal we have for you today! Get one set (2 sensors) for just $9.97 or pick up two (4 sensors) for just $16.97!!! And US Shipping is Free!! So there you go!! Get a great deal on one set (includes a two sensors) for just $9.97 or really get a super bargain by getting two sets (for a total of four sensors) for just $16.97!!!

Tip of the Day

Introducing the iLane

The iLane is a portable gadget that you put in your car, possibly on the dashboard or wherever it’s most convenient for you. It hooks up to most smart phones, blackberries, and other handheld devices and allows you to have complete control over these devices solely by using voice commands.

It allows you to send, receive and manage your emails, instant messages, text messages, and SMS messages by voice commands. You also can get the weather, sports, business and entertainment news.

iLane can also read your emails, instant messages and text messages to you without
you having to touch anything. It also notifies you immediately of incoming emails, text messages, instant messages and SMS messages that have been sent to your inbox.

You can choose to compose, open, delete, reply now or later to your emails and messages. You also can answer phones calls, make phone calls, merge phone calls and multi task between functions, etc. If you have a Blackberry you can access your applications and work in them as if you were entering data from a keyboard.

All of this voice-enabled magic also extends to allow your voice to control your email, calendar and other functions on your chosen device. You can even use Bluetooth to listen to your emails and messages. It's all possible though iLane. Give it a look up on your favorite search engine to find out more!

Oh yeah, one more thing. The iLane will automatic shut down when you exit your automobile.
Neat!

Today's Feature

Autorun goes Bye Bye!

Last week, Microsoft announced a pretty major change in security policy for windows XP, Vista and the upcoming Version 7 of their operating systems. Ever since the beginning, when you would plug in a device such as an external hard drive or flash drive, the "auto run" dialog box would appear. This box would many times offer you frequently used options for starting your device.

Well, this is all going to change. Starting soon with XP and Vista, Microsoft will be disabling the auto run feature for all devices other than cd-roms. This means that when you plug in a flash drive or hard drive, you will not get your auto run option. I'm sure that for some of you this will seem like a huge pain in the you know where, but there is a method to this madness.

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the conficker worm and how it spreads. Conficker and many other worms spread by exploiting the auto run in windows. If you have an infected device and you plug it in, you will be infected because of this exploit. Microsoft decided to disable this option to fight against works such as Conficker.

So keep an eye out for this change. It's coming soon to an OS near you!

Till next time, stay safe out there!

~Gary

Odd Music

I must be on a music kick this week. Actually it is probably because it is spring. I am doing a lot of house cleaning and I listen to lots of music while I clean.

(You do need Quick Time to listen to the music samples on this site. You can get it here).

This site is devoted to odd musical instruments. You can get the instrument's name, its description and then if you click the little speaker icon, you can hear what it sounds like. Each name is a link. Just click the instrument's name to see a picture and get more information about it.

Or, if you'd rather, you can just click the Grand Tour link near the top of the page and go through the entire gallery, which is what I did. To surf through, click the next button. To go back, click the back button. You get all the information, pictures and the ability to use the sound link this way all at once as well.

A lot of these instruments are simply amazing; both in looks and in sound. Some look so strange that you can’t believe they make music. I really appreciate that they included sound clips for some of them. For example, the Windform, the Uncello, the ‘jomama, the Due Capi and many more.

I want to mention that a lot of these instruments have great links attached to them for your viewing pleasure. I did not have time to visit all the links, but some of the ones I did were excellent. So, if you find a favorite instrument, don’t be afraid to explore it and learn more about it!

Some of my favorites are the trimeister, the dulcimer, the didjibodhrán, bandura, chrysalis and of course, the didgeridoo.

Thanks for understanding that we need to prevent the nasties.

Terms of Use

Personal & Educational Use Only This blog consists mainly of FREE newsletters from computer web gurus that I receive. I thought you might like to see them all in one place than try to discover them on your own. A moderate amount of editing may be done to eliminate unrelated repetitious ads or unnecessary text which bloat the post. However I have given the authors full credit and will not remove their site links because you deserve to see where it comes from and they deserve to get credit for what they have written. Your use of this site is simply for educational purposes. For more computer-related help go to: CPEDLEY.COM for free software, advice and tips on low cost products which are very helpful. If you want to contact the editor, please go CPEDLEY.COM and check the Contact page for email address.
