Here's A Crazy New Word You'll Learn To Love - Wolfram|Alpha

My, that's a funny word to open a newsletter up to see, isn't it? What is this word, you ask? Well, Wolfram|Alpha is an answer engine that just went live recently. It's much along the lines of Yahoo Answers, but here's the catch: You can put in equations, questions and just about anything else you can come up with and actually get a real answer! No waiting for a response, and no long list of results to scan.
For example, I put in: “Where is Fiji?” for my question, and instead of a long list of sites to sift though, I got this:

Poof! There's Fiji! Let's go!

Here's the actual, factual description of Wolfram|Alpha:

“(It) is an online service that answers factual queries directly by computing the answer from structured data, rather than providing a list of documents or web pages that might contain the answer as a search engine may do.”

Users submit queries and computations in the text box and Wolfram|Alpha then computes answers from a knowledge base of curated, structured data.
This means that it can answer just about anything, artificial intelligence-style! Try putting in stocks, math formulas, towns and dates. Wolfram will come up with something interesting!

Do a search for “WolframAlpha” next time you get the chance and check it out!

WOW! A MUST-HAVE For Digital Camera or Video Owners!!

Make Your Own CD or DVD Slide Show!

Incredibly Easy To Use!

Create A DVD or Video CD In Minutes From Your Photos!

All You Need Is A CD Burner - No Special Hardware!!

And Just Wait Till You See The Deal!

Slideshow

PLUS... You Won't Believe How FAST and Easy It Is To Do!

I'm so excited! We have just the coolest software for you today! If you shoot digital photos or even digital video, this is one piece of software you just gotta own! I almost can't stand how cool this is! I had to tear myself away from it just to write this review up!

It's called SlideShow Expressions and it lets you create these absolutely amazing DVDs or Video CDs from either your digital photos or videos (or both)! All you need is this software and a standard CD or DVD burner!! The resulting movies are incredibly professional looking and between all the "ohhs and "ahhs", everyone is going to ask how the heck you did these incredible shows!

I mean, think about it. You've probably taken a lot of photos and maybe even some home videos. Now's your chance to bring 'em back to life and share them with your family and friends! Don't let them just sit and gather digital dust on your hard drive (yeah, we know about you), it's time to really DO something exciting with 'em!

First off, SlideShow Expressions really couldn't be easier to use! You'll be blown away the first time you use it! Amazing how simple they can make these things! Seriously, it gives you all the shortcuts, the wizards, and the help you need by doing all the "hard parts" for you! Just start the wizard, import your photos (soooo easy), and follow the prompts! Ten minutes later, you have this absolutely amazing digital slide show of your images that is going to drop the jaw of anyone who sees it! Really - just wait till you try it! This takes you from beginning to end and shows you how to turn your favorite photos and videos into DVD's or Video CD's that frankly even you won't believe you were able to create yourself!

Sure, it's easy to use, but at the same time it's designed to help you produce stunning, professional quality projects in no time! You're not going to find ANY OTHER program that's this fast and easy...believe me...we've tried!!!

Here, just take a look at just some of the amazing features this has! Once you start the program, the easy-to-use "Wizard" starts up and asks you questions to help give you the features and designs you need to create the final result you want! Start out with taking your favorite photos and editing them to a professional level that will not only amaze you but your family and friends as well!

Slideshow

Oh, and get this. Included with this program is a fantastic mini photo editor that makes it oh-so-simple to "fix" and enhance those photos that didn't seem to come out quite the way you wanted when you took them! And don't worry, there's plenty of examples to show you what to do to really "tweak" 'em to how you want 'em to be!

Slideshow

As if that wasn't enough, you can add picture captions to go with your photos! You can also create on-screen menus and on-screen "chapter buttons". And you can "trim and edit" not only photos but videos as well! Think that sounds cool? Oh, just wait till you see the "Pan and Zoom" effects...this will blow your mind!!! What this does is let you bring your "still" images to life by "panning" across pictures and zooming in and out! And the program lets you choose the "begin" and the "end" views for a photo! For example, the slide can start with the focus exclusively on a small section of a photo and then the view can zoom out and pan in any direction to shift focus to an entirely different area! You've complete control over the focal shift. Here's the section of the program that shows you EXACTLY HOW TO DO IT!

Slideshow

But hang on...we're not done yet! Next you can choose slide transitions! Instead of just slapping them up on the screen, the software does these awesome scrolls, zooms in / out, fades, etc.! It really looks like it was done in a professional studio! In fact, there are tons of different "styles" you can choose from to give the show the exact "look" you're going for! It's sooo cool - you'll have a blast putting your production together!

And of course no "professional" level video presentation would be complete without audio, would it? So, let's add some music or even your own voice! Oh yeah, we're ready for the BIG LEAGUES!!!

So what do you do with your slideshow once it's been created? Tons! OK, first off, what if you want a CD or DVD to show off on your home TV set? Hey - that's my favorite use for this! Just save your show to a DVD or CD - either of which will play on ANY standard DVD player!! That's right - just pop in a standard CD-R or DVD-R and create a movie - no special CDs, DVDs or burners required!

Oh, and the "saving" options don't stop there! Want to publish your slide show directly on the Web? No problem! You can share your creation your photo slide shows with friends and family online at sites like MySpace, YouTube and other social Websites! Want more? You can convert your photo slide show for use on an Apple iPod, Sony PSP players, most MP3 players that support video, even cell phones that are "media enabled"! WOW!!! Talk about customized production! You've got it all!

Oh, and wait till you see this - It also INCLUDES A CD / DVD LABEL MAKER! That's right...no need to buy another program to design and create you DVD labels...it's already included! Don't just hand out a "blank" disc when you can design and print personalized CD and DVD disc labels and cover sheets! Now you can make your DVD presentation complete and give it that professional "polished" look! And with the templates and easy to follow tutorials you'll turn out awesome labels in no time!

This is GREAT way to archive and preserve your photos and home videos. You can organize an entire year's worth of pictures and put them on a CD or DVD! Plus, do it fast and easy. And you can even hand out copies to everyone you know. Great for family events like weddings, graduations, parties, you name it!

Don't Spend $40 or more for different programs that do each separately when the SlideShow Expressions can do it all! And to top it off, you can have all of this today for just, $12.97 and US shipping is free!!!

P.S. - Your family and friends are gonna love being able to see your photos and videos on their own DVD player in their living room! You're really gonna be thrilled with this!!!

Don't Fork Out $400.00 For Adobe PhotoShop!

We Have A Great Photo Editing Program Just Like It For $8.97 TODAY AND TODAY ONLY!!!

Make Professional Image Editing EASY!

Edit, Enhance, And Share Your Photos!

You're Gonna Be BLOWN AWAY!!

Seriously - just look at the screen shots below - this really looks and performs just like Adobe Photoshop! This has to be the most incredible software find we've ever come across! You'll save HUNDREDS and have pretty much the same program! WOW!

Let me guess - you'd love to have Adobe PhotoShop but that $400 price tag holds ya back. Wouldn't it great if someone made a program LIKE Photoshop, only cheaper? Oh, we found it! It's PhotoDesigner Pro and just look at those screen shots below - it looks and acts just like the $400 Adobe Photoshop! Layers, tools, filters - give this a try and you'll think you're using Photoshop!

At first I wasn't too sure about this one, could it really be like Photoshop? Let me tell ya, once I installed it, I was really surprised! You open it up and it really looks and performs pretty much exactly like Adobe Photoshop! The tools and layout look just slightly (very slightly) different, but it's all there! It features layers, adjustment layers, masks, effects, has pretty much all the same filters, rulers, tools - it's all there! Heck, going through the menus, you have to remind yourself that you're NOT using actually Photoshop!

Oh, just wait till you see the tools - that was my concern, but they're all there! The clone stamp, gradient tool, red-eye removal tool, crop tool, paint bucket, smudge tool, burn & dodge tools, the blur & sharpen tools, scratch removal tool, color picker, text tools, shapes, selection tools like Magic Wand or "shapes" - whew - on and on! You name the Photoshop tool, this has it!

Same goes for the rest of the program - the filters from Photoshop are all there! My personal favorites - the High Pass, Unsharpen Mask, Gaussian blur, Sharpen, and Lighting Effects - all there along with a total of 44 regular filters at your disposal! Everything you need to add that little extra punch to your photos!

As for the the image adjustments, you have 'em all too! We're talking Curves, Levels, Contrast, Hue / Saturation, Brightness / Contrast, Color Balance, Selective Color, Channel Mixer, Gradient Map - and more! It's all there - just like Photoshop!

I tell ya, if you want Photoshop but can't justify the expense, this is a no-brainer! Heck, even if you can justify the expense, why not take a look at this first? I've never seen a program that was soooo close to Photoshop!

With this program you are getting tons of ways to use professional level tools that will have everyone wondering who you hired to edit your photos! This program goes above and beyond basic photo editing software. It not only acts like Photoshop - it actually works with Adobe Photoshop files too - you can open Photoshop images, edit them and save them back into the native Photoshop format!! Of course, it will work with all the photo files on your computer and work with your digital camera / scanner too!

In addition to looking and acting like Photoshop, it's jam-packed with over 200 instant effects (these are REALLY cool), 140 picture brushes and 30 tutorials- all of which make this program unbeatable! Add your own message to your photos with the editable text function. Use the automated images correction for quick and easy photo editing. Create your own amazing effects with a few clicks of your mouse! Automatically create awesome web animations! Even turn your documents into print-ready PDF's with encryption and password protection!

Like I said, pretty much Photoshop's twin! It even has a pressure sensitive feature that works with a graphics tablet if you have one! Depending on how hard you press on the tablet, the program will know whether or not you to use a think or a thin brush! How absolutely sweet is that?

After playing with this for an hour or so (It's really fun), I came to the conclusion that anything I've been doing with Photoshop could be done in this - and using the same tools and techniques too! Why pay $400 for Photoshop when there's something like this on the market? You've got to try it - I promise, you'll be impressed!

Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro, this photo editor is going to amaze you! But the price is incredible in itself. You could pay almost $400.00 for Abode Photoshop, or you could check out this great program for just $8.97 and US Shipping is Free! Heck, for that kind of money, you can't afford to pass this one up! If you don't agree that this is just like Photoshop, you can even send it back for a refund within 60 days! No risk to you at all - give this a try, it's really unbelievable how much Photoshop DNA this seems to have!

The price will increase to $16.97 tomorrow! Don't miss the boat on this one!

Q:
Can you tell me what the Ten Net Commandments are?

A:
Here's a fun one for you!

Okay, I admit it! No one really asked today's question, but I saw this on our message board the other day and I just had to include it in today's newsletter. It may seem like a little joke to you, but all the information you're going to get today is something we all really should pay attention to. So, what am I going on and on about? Well, posted on our message board by "doldgeek" was a thread called "The Ten Net Commandments." They are just ten Internet "laws" we all should abide by on a regular basis. Let's see what they are, shall we?!

1.) Thou shalt not buy merchandise found in pop up ads or spam.

2.) Thou shalt not post thy e-mail address, phone number, address or social security number on the Internet, nor shalt thou post anyone else's.

3.) Thou shalt not forget to update thy Windows every second Tuesday.

4.) Thou shalt not connect to the Internet without installing an antivirus, nor shalt thou begin a scan without checking for updates.

5.) Thou shalt not connect to the Internet without installing a firewall.

6.) Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's credit card number, nor his bank routing number, nor his social security number.

7.) Thou shalt not enter thy credit card number without seeing the tiny padlock icon on thy status bar.

8.) Thou shalt not reply to the e-mail from the Nigerian banker.

9.) Thou shalt not forward chain letters to thy friends and family.

10.) Thou shalt not use "password" as thy password, nor thy birthday, nor thy childrens' names.

Aren't those great?! I mean, they all make a lot of sense and if you think about it, they are some general rules we can all follow when it comes to keeping ourselves and our computers safe. Also, in case you were wondering, this list was put together by Mr. Mike Healan, who works for Spywareinfo. I just thought this was something all of you who do not use our message board on a regular basis would like to see. I hope you enjoyed it!

Now, go on and make sure you're staying on track with the Ten Net Commandments!

MS Office

A Little Rotation

Do you draw and use shapes in the MS Office Suite programs?

I just love those little AutoShapes for highlighting the really important stuff. But... have you ever wished that you could use it at a slightly different angle? You know, a little something in your document, spreadsheet, presentation or message that isn't plain old horizontal or vertical? Something that really catches the eye.

Well, if you've ever wished for that extra bit of control over your shapes then here's the information you need to know.

  • First, let's draw an AutoShape. How about this one?

  • Now that you have the drawing, you're looking for the small green handle.
  • This is the rotation handle and it will allow you to free rotate the AutoShape around the center of the object. Just click and drag the handle.

For an extra bit of rotation control here's a couple of tips to try:

  • Try holding down the Shift key while you rotate the shape. You'll find that the figure will rotate in 15 degree increments around the center of the object.
  • Using the Ctrl key while rotating the object changes the point of rotation to the blue handle opposite of the green one.

Yes, it's all in the little green rotation handle. With that, you can see things from a whole different angle!

Save some Energy with your Computer

Today on the Worldstart site we have a nice tip from back in the day about conserving energy with your computer. Impossible, you say? Well, you'd just better trot on over and take a look for yourself! There's some good info in here!

Tip of the Day

Windows Media Player: Mini Mode

Did you know that the Windows Media Player program has an interesting option that allows you to open files in the Mini Player mode instead of the full window view? Well, now you do! The Mini Player mode is especially useful for opening music files you don't really need to see in full size. Let's learn a little more about it, shall we?!

To set up the Mini Player mode option, select Tools from the Windows Media Player window. Then click on Options and the following window will open:

You'll see a text box titled "Start the Mini Player for file names that contain this text." The default value in that field is "voiceatt.wav," which is obviously designed to use the Mini mode for voicemail attachments.

If you want to make all your MP3 files open in the Mini Player mode, all you have to do is type ".mp3" (without the quotes) into the window:

Or, if you have all your music stored on a single drive like I do, you can type in the drive letter or even a folder path that leads to your music collection:

If you want every single file to always open in the Mini Player mode, just type a single colon ( : ) into the field. Keep in mind though, that doesn't work quite as well for videos.

Now, when you double click on a file in Windows Explorer, it will open in the Mini Player mode by default. Cool, huh?!

Here are a few more screenshots for you, just to give you an idea of what the Mini Player looks like.

Today's Feature

Q:
I read recently that Google is tracking my interests for advertising purposes. Is this true and should I stay away from Google?

A:
This is a great question and I will be happy to let everyone know how this works.

It is true that Google just announced a new technology for Internet advertising that they call Interest-based Advertising. As I'm sure you can guess, this allows Google to know what kinds of products you are interested in. It will then allow them to display advertising to you that meets your interests. They figure that if they can show you ads that you are interested in, they will make more money.

So, now that you know what it is, let me explain how it works and why it is not a threat to you.

Google makes Interest based advertising happen using the wonderful world of cookies. Let's say you go to a website that displays ads from Google (We display ads from Google, so if you want to see one just click here . You'll see it at the top). When you visit this site, a cookie will be stored on your computer that will give you an ID number. (This number will not personally identify you, just your computer. It does not store any personal information.) As you continue to surf around the web, each site that has Google ads will see if you have this cookie on your system. If you do, it will report back to Google telling them that you visited the site.

So, since most sites on the web these days have Google advertising, you can begin to see how this works. You visit many sites a day that report to Google. Google keeps track of what kind of sites you visit and in turn show you ads about things you are more interested in. This is very cool if you ask me!

Now, lets talk about the privacy part of this situation. I am sure that many of you out there are saying "I don't want Google tracking me". I thought the same thing when I first read about this, but I changed my mind. Here is why: Google is not really "tracking" you. They are simply looking at the types of sites your computer goes to. It does not use any of your personal info such as name, address or email. It simply assigns a random number to your computer.

My thought on this is: If I have to see advertisments every day, I would rather that they be about something in which I am interested. That way it's not a total waste of space, right?

If you disagree with me and Google, you do also have the option to opt out of this feature. You can read about it here

Until next time, stay safe out there!

~Gary

COLOURlovers

It’s fair to say that I’m having a love affair with color. It started when I was a little girl and discovered neon green. My love have green has morphed from neon green to lime green to true grass green. And then there’s purple, red, ivory, yeah it isn’t wise to get me started.

I was so happy to have stumbled across this site. COLOURlovers is devoted to color palettes and patterns. I’m sure you might be thinking, “What the heck do I need those for?” Well I’ve thought up a ton of uses for them. I’ll share just a few with you here:

1. Decorating
2. Art
3. Pairing colors for web design

I’m being good. I’m only sharing three. For the first one on my list, decorating. You could easily discover a palette or pattern you’d like to decorate around. Or if you’re stuck on find complimentary colors to go with the colors you have already, you could find a palette centered on the color you have and use the other colors in it to accessorize.

I think the Art idea is rather obvious. Whether you’re mixing clay, paint, or paper – you could definitely find inspiration off the palettes and patterns here.

Web design can be tricky. Sometimes colors you think will look snazzy together don’t after all. Save yourself time by checking out the palettes before committing to color. While we’re on the subject of web design, another spiffy use for the patterns would be to use them in your blog’s background. Just make sure you credit the site.

Navigation is easy. Just use the navigation strip along the top of the page. Your options are: Forums, Palettes, Patterns, Colors, Lovers, Blog, and Trends.

It’s all standard navigation, but if you’re looking for a FAQ head on over to the forums section. You’ll find it under Color Talk, it’s titled F.A.Q.: Sharing the Love.

Also – if you decide to register (which was really easy) you can favorite the palettes and mark the ones you love.

Oh my gosh, I almost forgot! You can create your own palettes too! On either the pattern or the palette section – just select new. For example if you were making a pattern. You’d select the pattern you want, and then you’d select a color for each part of the pattern. Clicking on the color box will bring up a color wheel that you can select the color from. Then you just name it and save it!

Now go forth and enjoy color!

PREPARE TO BE BLOWN AWAY!!!

WARNING: Make Sure You Have The Volume Turned DOWN Before you Plug These in!!

These Portable Speakers Are A "Concert Hall In a Box"!!!Folding Speaker System

I'VE GOT TO TELL YA WHAT HAPPENED when we first got these in. I Plugged these into the headphone jack of my desktop computer and clicked on an Internet radio station to get some music.BUT I didn't bother to check the VOLUME LEVEL of my computer! When I turned on the power to these portable speakers, it startled me so much, I JUMPED ABOUT A FOOT OUT OF MY CHAIR!

WOW!!! WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THESE "LITTLE" SPEAKERS COULD BE THAT POWERFUL!!

I'm tellin' ya...you're gonna be surprised how POWERFUL this little speaker system is! Whew!!!

What's funny is this speaker system is actually made so you carry it around with you wherever go. They're about the size of an eye glass case and the speakers themselves fold up and tuck safely away inside the hard-shell case. So when I first saw these I thought, "These are so small! How POWERFUL could these actually be? Well, I found out quick enough...PLENTY POWERFUL!!! These things ROCK...and you're gonna love 'em!!!

What I like about these is that they work with ANY AUDIO DEVICE that has a headphone jack! So you can use this with your mp3 player, satellite radio, laptop computer, CD player, portable DVD player even portable game! (The kids will LOVE to hear their gaming devices take on a "BIG 3-D sound!)

PLUS, you don't have to plug these into an AC electrical outlet because they work on four "AA" batteries, so you can play your audio devices just about anywhere! which makes 'em REALLY convenient! There's a audio cord that's neatly attached to the speakers, and you just plug that into whatever device you want to listen to! And when you're done, just unplug the cord and tuck it back into the case! THAT'S A REALLY A GREAT idea not only for easy travel but to protect the speaker system, too!

What's REALLY AMAZING about these speakers is that YOU CAN EVEN USE THESE WITH YOUR DESKTOP COMPUTER! How's THAT for versatility! So, if you don't have a set of speakers for your desktop computer or you're not happy with the ones you have, before you rush out and buy a more expensive set of speakers, PUT THESE to the test just like I did! You're gonna LOVE the sound! Plus - you'll be saving yourself a LOT of money!

And the "icing on the cake" is that you'll ALSO have a FANTASTIC set of portable speakers that you can take with you anywhere and play your portable devices! Oh man!!! How sweet is THAT? The only thing that can make this even sweeter is an amazing price - $14.97 and US shipping is FREE!!! Is that crazy or what???

I've heard small computer systems that were in the $40-50 range that didn't sound HALF as good as these beauties! These are something you're gonna want to have for home AND on the go so grab one now at this crazy price!
