Amazing, Undiscovered Firefox Tricks You'll Love

There are some lesser-known features in Mozilla Firefox that can make your Internet browsing experience much more enjoyable. I'll admit, that even I didn't know about these features up until about a week ago. So let's explore together, shall we?

1. View your saved passwords for a page.

You're in the habit of saving your passwords, but the convenience has caused your memory to lapse and now you can't remember what it actually was! Rest easy, because all you need to do is right-click anywhere on the current page, select View Page Info and under the security tab there's an option to “View Saved passwords”.

Sounds a little unsecured, doesn't it? That's where a Master Password comes in. Under Tools>Options>Security there's a checkbox for “Use Master password”. Select this and enter in something you'll remember. Now anyone who tried to view your saved passwords will be met with...well, another password!

2. Duplicate tabs with drag and drop

Sounds easy enough, right? Well, it is! Just hold the Ctrl key and drag a tab to an empty spot on your tab bar. Instant duplication!

3. Small Icons on the toolbar.

This is a minor feature, but one I'm sure at least a few of you will use. All you need to do to make your navigation buttons smaller is right click on the home icon on the toolbar and select “Customize...”. From here, you can add and remove icons, but also check the tick box that says “Use Small Icons”. There's a little more space on your toolbar now!

Computers 101

Q:
Whenever I try to print something, the text comes out all smudged together and everything just looks distorted. What could be causing this and how can I fix it?

A:
Great question! We've covered similar printing problem questions like this before, but I don't think we've ever hit this topic head on. That's going to change today though and all you had to do was ask! Okay, so just to make sure, this is what's happening: You go to print off a document from your computer and the end result turns out to be a bunch of ink just all jumbled together. It could either be smudged copies, lines, distorted text or even unrecognizable images. Basically, you can't go on like this, so let's get this printer problem under control. Here we go!

As with all printing problems, this could be caused by a number of things. Below, I'm going to go over some of the main ones, along with a brief description of what you can do to troubleshoot and eventually fix it. Hopefully, at least one of them will give you what you need to get your printer up and running successfully again.

1.) Paper Issues: First of all, you need to make sure you're using the right kind of paper. When printing regular documents from a computer, you should try to always use the 8 1/2 x 11 standard paper. If you're trying to use a special kind of paper or an untraditional kind, your printer may not respond well to it. If they don't get along, your work will come out all smudgy or the text could be uneven. This even causes text to run off the side of the paper sometimes as well.

Now, this doesn't mean that you can't ever print with special paper, but you have to make sure of a couple things before you do it. First, make sure the paper is being fed into the printer correctly. You may have to move your paper tray over a little in order for the paper to fit. Next, simply be sure that the type of paper you're using is okay to use with your printer. Your printer's manual should have some information on what types of paper you can and cannot use. Basically, if you're only having trouble with one kind of paper, you can probably guess what the culprit is.

2.) Driver Issues: The second most common cause of bad printing is the drivers. If you're only getting unreadable text or strange looking characters, you probably have a bad driver. To fix this, you should look into and make sure you're using the most recent and updated drivers for your printer. If you don't, download and install them right away. You can find this information online by searching for your type of printer or you can read about it in your printer's manual as well.

3.) Print Head Issues: If your printer is only printing out fuzzy or blurry text or images, you probably have dirty print heads. Luckily, there are ways to check on this (at least for the most recent printers). If you look in your manual, you should be able to find some information on how to do a printing test, which will also lead you in the right direction to check and clean your printer's print heads. Of course, this method is different for every printer, so I can't really give instructions, but like I said, it can all be found in your manual. Also, if you use your printer on a regular basis, it's recommended that you do this at least once a year, if not more.

4.) Ink Issues: You knew this one was coming! If you haven't replaced your ink cartridges in awhile, this may be the base of your printing problems. This is especially true if you don't use your printer very often, because the ink could dry up. Each time you print something, there's usually an image that comes up on your computer screen showing you an estimated amount of ink that you have left. Pay close attention to that each time and be prepared to change it if the levels look low. If your printer doesn't do that, it will still notify you by flashing a light on one of its buttons. Either way, you'll be able to tell if your ink cartridge needs replaced. All of this is the same for the toner in laser printers as well. Again, if you haven't changed your ink or toner in over a year, you might as well get to it!

5.) Other Hardware Issues: If you have checked into all of the above suggestions and you're still having trouble with your printer, you may have a basic hardware problem. If this is the case, the best thing to do is contact your printer's manufacturer and ask them about it. Their contact information can probably be found online or in your manual. They might be able to recommend something else or even repair your printer for you.

Either way you look at it, printers are very important to our computing lives. Without them, we can never see our work on paper. So, I guess all I'm telling you is to take good care of your printer and if you run into a problem, get it resolved right away. You'll thank me later!

MS Office

Task Time!

When you're checking to see how your day is shaping up in the MS Outlook Calendar do you notice the tasks and think "Ok, so that needs to be done by 2 and this one has to be completed by 3:30"?

After that what's your next thought?

Maybe it's something along the lines of "Exactly when today will I have time to get this done?"

Most likely, and yet the intent of the question is probably more along the lines of not forgetting to make time to get them done.

So, if that's your daily dilemma then I do have a suggestion that may work for you.

With just a click and drag you can move the task into your calendar - assigning it a time - so that you know around all your meetings and whatnot when it's time to make sure it's completed.

I found that with Outlook 2007 it was a simple drag and drop into a time slot.

However, when I checked an older version of Outlook, I found that when I released the mouse button to drop it into the calendar an appointment dialog window opened. So to complete the move I needed to click the Save and Close button - but after that things were scheduled into my day perfectly.

While no system is fool-proof and we're all certain to forget a few things along the way - maybe this will help to keep the "few" to an even lower number than ever before.

Wait Till You See These Amazing Maps!

Detailed Maps Of The Entire United States At You Fingertips!

Just Wait Till You Take Your Next Backcountry Trip!

You're Gonna LOVE This!

Only 48 Available!! Yikes! Better Hurry!

WOW - Do we have an awesome one for you today! I personally LOVE this program - I've been playing with it for the last several days, looking for new places to explore. What am I going on about? It's National Geographic's Backroads Explorer and it's just awesome (oh, and you're gonna love the deal too)!

This 17 CD set (yes 17!) contains Topo maps of the entire United States! In case you don't know, a Topo map shows you not only roads trails, etc, but also the topography of an area - hills, valleys, etc. They look like this (the close together the contours, the steeper the hill):

Talk about detailed huh? When I'm out in any kind of backcountry, maps like this are invaluable to me. Small dirt roads just aren't listed on state maps! In fact, this shows all sorts of roads that aren't even in my big Michigan Gazetter map book (and that is REALLY detailed - 118 pages worth of maps).

It's fantastic if you’re driving around - or hiking around - an area you're not familiar with. When I used to go backpacking, these were standard equipment and we're very well worn by the end of the trip!

As for the program itself, the layout is nothing short of fantastic. You can quickly print a map (or maps) of the area you're going to, navigating around or zooming in is as easy as clicking your mouse. You can save sessions so you can go back to favorite areas, draw arrows for directions (great for groups), search for locations, and even interface it with your GPS unit!

Not only that, it has a fantastic "Route Tool" feature that lets you draw a line along the route you want to go, and it will give you the exact mileage! If that isn't cool, I don't know what is!

Honestly, it's loaded with TONS of features, but you get the idea. If you want the most powerful, most complete mapping software around, this is it. It's my favorite map program and I know it's going to get a lot of use! I'm heading up to the U.P. in June, and I'm going to have a bunch of these maps with me!

If you do any kind of outdoor activity - hiking, off roading, fishing, photography, kayaking, canoeing, - you pick the sport - I strongly encourage you to grab this title! I wish I could sit down next to you and show you this thing! I know you'd be impressed!

Oh, and wait till you see the deal we have! This is a $60 program (and a real bargain at that - most like this are $100+), but you get it for just $20.97 and US shipping is FREE! We looked around, and the "bargain" prices for this range for $45-$52! It's one fantastic deal:

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=524

PS - Please note that quantities are limited on this one! You'll need to get to the site early to get in on this deal - and believe me, this isn't one you want to miss! You'll love this!!

Absolutely AWESOME  Noise-Cancelling Headphones!

Kill Background Noise By Flipping A Switch! Really!

Outstanding Listening Experience!

PLUS Incredible Sound And Amazing Comfort!

Just Wait Till You Feast Your Ears On This!

Psst - Hey, wanna really (really) great set of headphones? Maybe the best you've ever tried? We just got an absolutely amazing deal on a brand new product! We have the new Sentry Noise Cancelling Headphones and these are going to absolutely blow you away!

Let's get right to it and talk about the noise cancelling part. Now, I've seen noise cancelling headphones go well beyond the $100 mark, so yeah, I was a little skeptical too. I mean, could these be for real? So, I put them on and did some testing.

I started by hooking up to my iPod (any MP3 player, stereo, CD player, etc will work with these), and flipped on the noise cancelling. WOW! Really seemed to work good, but was it just my imagination? So, I decided to try these WITHOUT the music and see what happened. I have couple noisy computer fans that I could easily hear with the iPod off, so I stood by those with my headphones on. I hit the Noise Cancelling switch, and just like that the fan sound disappeared! I strained to hear it, but it really was gone! I turned off the noise cancelling and I could easily hear it again, back on, it's GONE! WOW!! Talk about impressive! These work GREAT!

Can you imagine how cool these are going to be? Just a quick flip of the noise-cancelling switch gets rid of droning, background noise! Just think about how fantastic these are going to be on your next plane trip - no more cranking the volume all the way up just to hear over the engines! Oh, and what about while working out? Wouldn't it be great to cancel out the sound of the treadmill, bike ect? What about if you're just in a noisy room? A flip of the switch and it's just you and your music!

Oh, and think about it - since you don't have to crank up the volume to overcome background noise, these could literally save your hearing!

OK, the noise cancelling part is absolutely fantastic, but just wait till you slip these over your ears! Amazingly comfortable! In fact, my wife had a set of Bose headphones (that cost 2X as much and weren't noise-cancelling), and actually switched to these! Not just for the noise-cancelling, but mostly because these were SO MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE! They feature really soft padding, a incredibly well designed and comfortable headband, PLUS the ear pieces on both sides actually swivel around - a perfect fit every time! Even if you don't need the noise-cancelling part, these are well worth it just for the comfort!

PLUS, they sound absolutely amazing! You are in for a real treat first time you put these on! You're going to absolutely LOVE the full range of sound you get to experience! The lows are rich and the highs crisp and sharp! Close your eyes and you'll feel like you're completely engulfed in music! You may even notice instruments in your songs you never knew where there! The range is really incredible!

Now, if you've shopped for noise cancelling headphones before, you know they can be pricey. Bose can go for $350, Sony for $400, JVC is a bargain and can be found for $90, Monster gets $300 - but wait till you see your deal!

Your price? Get this, you can get these for just $28.97 and US shipping is FREE! Let me tell ya, for that kind of money you just can't go wrong! I know it sounds too good to be true, but just wait till you try 'em! You'll be a believer too! Check 'em out:

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4921

PS - Don't spend hundreds on a set of noise-cancelling headphones - you've gotta give these a try! Super comfortable, sound great, and they cancel out background noise with the flip of a switch! Get your today!

Tip of the Day

Cap Your Own Speed

Do you have an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that caps your Internet speed at something really slow (like 64kbps) if you happen to exceed your download limit for the month? I mean, some ISPs charge ridiculous amounts like $1/MB you go over. Then it's likely that your ISP will take their good ol' time before lifting the limit or they might even make you wait a week or two until your plan upgrade comes into effect. Now, if your Internet usage profile looks a little bit like this, you’re safe.

But, if you’ve ever gone over your limit, you know how frustrating it can be. You might even get an uncontrollable urge to throw your computer out the window. So, to save you that trouble, here are some things you can do if you’re "capped."

1.) Look at "bare" Web sites. The quickest Web sites to load on capped speeds are the ones with hardly any graphics on them. Try http://m.ebay.com (the made-for-mobile version of eBay) or even http://m.youtube.com (the made-for-mobile version of YouTube). It’s amazing how fast those can load! The made-for-mobile Web sites also usually come free of ads, so the page loads faster all the way around.

2.) Use your ISP’s freezone. Some ISPs have "freezones" where your downloads on certain sites don’t count toward your monthly limit. For example, my ISP allows me to download from iTunes to my heart’s content and I'm not charged for it at all. You can contact your ISP to see if they offer this service.

3.) Don’t put yourself in this position in the first place! For your next monthly limit, remember this old saying: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Try using those made-for-mobile sites more often and don’t download as much. Or, you could upgrade your usage plan or even change ISPs!

Also, if you haven't been capped yet, make sure you remember what can happen if you use the Internet too much. Just giving you a heads up!

Today's Feature

AdAware

A couple weeks ago I wrote about the best rated free anti-virus program. That article got such a great response that I figured I should write about another very high rated free program that will protect your computer.

I'm sure that some of you have heard of AdAware. This program was one of the first anti-adware and spyware programs out and it has continued to lead the pack in terms of quality. Just this year, AdAware released their Anniversary Edition. This is the most recent version of the free program and it does an amazing job.

Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition is like many other previous versions of adaware. After installing the program, you can open it and it will automatically update. After the update, it is easy as pie. Just choose either the quick scan or the full scan and you are on your way. Wait for the scan to finish and it will tell you what it recommends for action. Many times, Adaware will simply recommend removal, but other times it will have additional instructions.

Ad-Aware really is a great supplemental adware removal program, especially if your Internet security suite does not already include adware protection. Simply running ad-aware once a month will dramatically decrease your chances of getting a damaged computer.

If you are interested in trying out Ad-Aware Free Anniversary Edition, you can get it here.

Enjoy!

America’s Favorite Architecture

Welcome to a site where you can view 150 different architecture projects selected by the American public. Here you’ll be able not only to view them but to vote on them and select your top five.

Your first major decision is to decide how you want to view the site. Your options are full-screen or regular browser size. The full-screen will launch in a separate window, the regular browser version launches in the window you already have open. You get exactly the same site either way.

At the very bottom of the screen you’ll notice five blank squares that is where your top five will go as you select them.

To navigate through the image move the green slider to the right of the page. This will move you through the images. If you see something you like click the green plus button to add it to your favorites.

There are several ways you can view the images. The first way is by Ranking, this is the default layout. You’ll view the different architecture locations/buildings/structures by their position in rank. You can also view them by Buildings A-Z, or Architects A-Z, or the Date they were added.

If you click the image of the architecture you can see it larger, and learn more about what you are seeing. It was extremely difficult for me to select my top five. But here they are:

Edgar Kaufman Residence (Fallingwater) – A Frank Lloyd Wright building atop of a water fall in the woods. This one was #29 when I was visiting. I love this building because it is so unexpected. I like lines of the house and the way it peaks out into its surroundings.

Thorncrown Chapel - #60 when I was visiting, again here I like the interplay of structure with nature. This was designed by E. Fay Jones. All I can think when I see this chapel, is good heavens I’d love to get married there. My imagination is just set on fire by the idea of how different lighting would change the way you perceive this place.

Surprisingly enough, the other three on my list are libraries. I’m on my way to being a librarian myself – so I was definitely having an “Ah-ha!” moment when I read the descriptions and found out these were libraries! They are #47 the New York Public Library, #54 the Fisher Fine Arts Library, and #58 the Ames Library.

Once you’ve picked your top five click the red Vote button. It will then show you how many vote each one has, and what the top overall favorites are.

This site provides and interesting look into American architecture. I hope you enjoy the look as much as I did.

Seriously - just look at the screen shots below - this really looks and performs just like Adobe Photoshop! This has to be the most incredible software find we've ever come across! You'll save HUNDREDS and have pretty much the same program! WOW!

Let me guess - you'd love to have Adobe PhotoShop but that $400 price tag holds ya back. Wouldn't it great if someone made a program LIKE Photoshop, only cheaper? Oh, we found it! It's PhotoDesigner Pro and just look at those screen shots below - it looks and acts just like the $400 Adobe Photoshop! Layers, tools, filters - give this a try and you'll think you're using Photoshop!

At first I wasn't too sure about this one, could it really be like Photoshop? Let me tell ya, once I installed it, I was really surprised! You open it up and it really looks and performs pretty much exactly like Adobe Photoshop! The tools and layout look just slightly (very slightly) different, but it's all there! It features layers, adjustment layers, masks, effects, has pretty much all the same filters, rulers, tools - it's all there! Heck, going through the menus, you have to remind yourself that you're NOT using actually Photoshop!

Oh, just wait till you see the tools - that was my concern, but they're all there! The clone stamp, gradient tool, red-eye removal tool, crop tool, paint bucket, smudge tool, burn & dodge tools, the blur & sharpen tools, scratch removal tool, color picker, text tools, shapes, selection tools like Magic Wand or "shapes" - whew - on and on! You name the Photoshop tool, this has it!

Same goes for the rest of the program - the filters from Photoshop are all there! My personal favorites - the High Pass, Unsharpen Mask, Gaussian blur, Sharpen, and Lighting Effects - all there along with a total of 44 regular filters at your disposal! Everything you need to add that little extra punch to your photos!

As for the the image adjustments, you have 'em all too! We're talking Curves, Levels, Contrast, Hue / Saturation, Brightness / Contrast, Color Balance, Selective Color, Channel Mixer, Gradient Map - and more! It's all there - just like Photoshop!

I tell ya, if you want Photoshop but can't justify the expense, this is a no-brainer! Heck, even if you can justify the expense, why not take a look at this first? I've never seen a program that was soooo close to Photoshop!

With this program you are getting tons of ways to use professional level tools that will have everyone wondering who you hired to edit your photos! This program goes above and beyond basic photo editing software. It not only acts like Photoshop - it actually works with Adobe Photoshop files too - you can open Photoshop images, edit them and save them back into the native Photoshop format!! Of course, it will work with all the photo files on your computer and work with your digital camera / scanner too!

In addition to looking and acting like Photoshop, it's jam-packed with over 200 instant effects (these are REALLY cool), 140 picture brushes and 30 tutorials- all of which make this program unbeatable! Add your own message to your photos with the editable text function. Use the automated images correction for quick and easy photo editing. Create your own amazing effects with a few clicks of your mouse! Automatically create awesome web animations! Even turn your documents into print-ready PDF's with encryption and password protection!

Like I said, pretty much Photoshop's twin! It even has a pressure sensitive feature that works with a graphics tablet if you have one! Depending on how hard you press on the tablet, the program will know whether or not you to use a think or a thin brush! How absolutely sweet is that?

After playing with this for an hour or so (It's really fun), I came to the conclusion that anything I've been doing with Photoshop could be done in this - and using the same tools and techniques too! Why pay $400 for Photoshop when there's something like this on the market? You've got to try it - I promise, you'll be impressed!

Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro, this photo editor is going to amaze you! But the price is incredible in itself. You could pay almost $400.00 for Abode Photoshop, or you could check out this great program for just $8.97 and US Shipping is Free! Heck, for that kind of money, you can't afford to pass this one up! If you don't agree that this is just like Photoshop, you can even send it back for a refund within 60 days! No risk to you at all - give this a try, it's really unbelievable how much Photoshop DNA this seems to have!
