Quick Tips

Conserve your LCD Monitor's Lifespan

Like all electronics, LCD monitors have a lifespan. Usually, this can be up to ten years or so, but even after only a couple of years our monitors can begin to dim; giving us a dark, eye-straining image that can make it difficult to get anything accomplished! You can tweak the brightness, fiddle with the contrast, but the damage has already been done. Your backlight is dying and you need to start shopping for a new monitor.

But wait! Say the monitor you're using still looks good at the moment. Is there any way to prolong the life of your LCD?

Why, yes, folks, there is! It's really easy, too! Notice the row of buttons on the front or side of your monitor? That's the adjustment panel. Here, you can set your monitor's brightness, contrast, horizontal and vertical positioning and a bunch of other settings to make your viewing experience better!

For now, all we're concerned with is the brightness and contrast. To make sure the backlight in your monitor lives as long as possible, turn both of these down a bit; just to tolerable levels. This takes the strain off of your monitor's backlight and will ensure that your investment sticks around for awhile!

As an added bonus: Here's a neat site that has all sorts of tests and explanations to keep your LCD monitor looking good and performing up to spec: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/

Keep it alive!

Hey!! You'll WAKE UP NOW!!!

If You Tend To Oversleep, Here's A Lifesaver For You

This Alarm Clock Is Easy To Read And Has An Alarm That's GUARANTEED To Wake You Up!

Travel Alarm

What Else Do you Need An Alarm Clock To Do, Anyway?

When you're on the road away from home and you know that you HAVE to wake up the next morning by a certain time, you don't want to mess around and have to read a complex instruction manual to try and figure out how to set your alarm. You want to do and know that it's done AND that you can rely on it, right? That's EXACTLY what this does. This Does TWO Thing: TELLS YOU THE TIME and WAKES YOU UP!!

Sometimes all the "bells-and whistles" just get in the way. Sometimes "simple" works just best. Easier to use and less things to break! This has a clean, simple, EASY TO READ display so you can SEE THE TIME! If you need to, you can hit a button that turns on an LED light so the numbers are "backlit" for easy reading in the dark.

And it has SIMPLE CONTROLS make it EASY TO SET the time and set the alarm. There's only THREE BUTTONS!! One to set the "Hour", one to set the "Minutes" and one for the LED "backlight" and a "Snooze" control - both on the same button. How's that for simplicity? The last thing you need is to be fumbling around, trying to figure out how to set an alarm clock in the middle of the night, especially when you're away from home!

Here's the BEST part: it has an ANNOYING alarm that's GUARANTEED to get you out of bed! Actually, the has "three-phases". If the alarm goes off and you don't answer it after a few seconds, it "speeds up"! If you still don't turn it off, after a few more seconds it off, it speeds up again...even faster!!! So, how "annoying" is it? Well, let me put it this way: When I was testing this out, I let it ring for about 20 seconds and I immediately had TWO different people, in TWO separate offices down the hall yell, "TURN THAT THING OFF!" So, when this goes off right next to your bed, I think it's safe bet to say that, YOU WILL GET UP! But then, isn't that what it's for???

Travel Alarm

Like I said, it does have a "Snooze" button, but I don't you'll be using that much. And have to listen to that alarm again? I doubt it!

Also, this has as pretty good "heft" to it...it feels really solid. Not heavy, it just feels substantial"...like you're really holding somethin', if you know what I mean. Plus it's compact and rugged so you can just toss it in your suitcase, overnight bag, gym bag, whatever and you don't have to worry about it holding up...it will!

If you need a very good, RELIABLE ALARM CLOCK when you travel, on vacation or if the alarm clock you have doesn't do the job and you want an inexpensive solution without having to take a chance on buying another clock radio, get this one. Trust me...THIS WILL GET 'ER DONE!!! So ready for a deal that'll "make you sleep like a baby?" (Don't worry...we've got just the thing to wake you up!) How about $10.97 and US shipping is FREE!!! Sometimes simple is best, and a great deal makes it even better! So grab one now right here:

Computers 101

Q:
I just bought a new scanner, but I really have no idea how to use it. Can you give me some basics on it?

A:
To begin, a scanner is much like a copy machine. It has a glass surface under a lid and a motion light that scans the material you place on it. The only difference is that scanners can process color much better and it has more controls.

You can scan all sorts of material with a scanner, including pictures, paper documents like bank statements, pages from books, magazine articles, maps and even things like coins (3D objects that don't have a lot of dimension). Once you scan the material, it makes an image in the memory of your computer, instead of another piece of paper like a copy machine does.

Once you have your digital image on your computer, you can bring it up on your monitor, e-mail it, print it or anything you want to do with it. Scanning gives you a lot more options.

You do have to have software to go along with your scanner. A lot of times, the software that will work best with your scanner will come along with it when you buy it. If not, you can do a search online to find different kinds of scanner software that will work with your machine. Some scanning software can work on its own, but most have a toolbar, similar to one you see in a Web browser, that will guide you through the scanning process.

Scanners also often work with a TWAIN driver, which is also used with other devices like digital cameras. The TWAIN driver is basically the software that is provided by the scanner manufacturer to make your scanner work. All scanner manufacturers have agreed on using a TWAIN driver, so your scanner will come with the correct driver made specifically for your type of scanner. It also helps transfer the scanned material into the image that will show up on your computer screen.

To get started, open the image program that came with your scanner (or if you use a different imaging program, open that). Open the lid of your scanner and place the document, photo or whatever you're scanning onto the glass bed. Then close the lid. Make sure you read through the manual that comes with your scanner to be sure there are no additional steps that I may be missing in this article.

You may also have to select the TWAIN driver for your scanner if it doesn't automatically come up, but all of that should be explained in your manual. Now, you will just press the Scan button to scan the item and make an image. It usually takes anywhere between 15 to 60 seconds to complete the scan.

Once the image is scanned, it will appear on your screen and you can modify it any way you want. If it's a picture, you can rotate it, clear out red eye, etc. If it's a text document, you can make the text larger, highlight things, etc. You can do whatever you want with the tools that your scanning software provides.

Once you have the item edited the way you want it, you can save it just like you would anything else. Go to File, Save As and choose a TIF or JPEG format. You can place it wherever you want (in My Documents, My Pictures, on a flash drive, etc). You can also print it right then if you so choose.

Note: All scanners are different and you will have to read through your manual for specific instructions from what I have given you. Always consult your manual if you run into problems. The scanning process is pretty simple though, so have fun with it and happy scanning!

MS Office

Double the Work? No thanks!

Ever find yourself either retyping or copying and pasting information from an Excel worksheet into a text box or an AutoShape?

Maybe you need that data stated in a bold way, so it's been put into a text box or an AutoShape to grab everyone's attention.

Good idea.

Of course, I've got to ask. What happens when the data changes?

Do you then go back into the AutoShape or text box and fix the data in there too?

Tired of doing the double editing?

Yeah, I would be too, so here's a quick tip on linking the text box or AutoShape to the cell.

The benefit, you ask?

Well, with the direct link to the cell containing the data, a change in the cell is automatically updated in the text box or the AutoShape. No more duplicate efforts.

Interested in the "how to"?

Yep, I was too, so let's take a look.

  • First, you'll have to draw the text box or shape you intend to use.
  • Your next step depends upon what type of object you have:
    • For a shape you'll need to right-click on it and choose Add Text from the menu. You can then click into the formula bar and type an equal sign (=).
    • Since a text box is ready to go for text simply click into the formula bar and type your equal sign (=).
  • Next, click the cell that contains your data.
  • Finish by hitting the Enter key.

Voila! The information from the cell is now displayed in the text box or shape. You can proceed with formatting to fit your needs.

The best thing about all this?

No more duplicate work for you! Simply update the cell and the text box or AutoShape is fed the new information automatically!

4 Port Hub

This 4 Port Mini USB 2.0 High Speed HUB is compact and MADE TO TRAVEL! But don't let it's size fool you! This is one tough piece of hardware! And, it has the BEST of ALL worlds! Not only is this FAST!!! What's REALLY great about this 4 Port HUB is that it's sooo compact and travel-friendly. I'll show you what I mean...

image

See that cable? When you're not using the HUB, that USB cable, PLUGS RIGHT INTO one of the ports on the side of the HUB itself! So it stays tucked away safely and securely! NO CABLES TO GET IN THE WAY! Here's another thing you may not have thought of: you know how when a USB cable is out, it can stepped on or damaged? Well, because this cable gets plugged into the side of the HUB itself, the end of the USB cable stays COVERED and PROTECTED!!! That's what makes this is the PERFECT Hub To Take On The Road! What a GREAT idea!!!

And when you're ready to use it, just unplug it from the side of the HUB and plug tit into your computer or laptop! In other words...it's "hot-swappable" - meaning you just plug it in and your ready to go! No having to mess around with software...no hassles!

PLUS, this 4-Port capability so you can connect to MULTIPLE DEVICES at the same time! No more unplugging one device so you can plug in another! "Lock and Load" you're ready to go!!!

The only thing they could have done to make this tougher is to armor-plate it...but then it would be too heavy to carry around! When you need a dependable HUB, this could be worth its weight in gold! But your price? Only $10.97 and US shipping is FREE!!!

P.S. - This little guy is ready for the "Big Leagues"...just be sure not to leave home without it!!!

WOW!!! We had an OUTSTANDING response on this AMAZING remote control!!! We we're going to pull this and put something else in its place but the demand has been CRAZY!!! So, O.K., O.K., we're gonna hold this open for ONE MORE DAY!! For those of you who haven't ordered yours yet, please be sure to do so today!!!

I already took 3 home - one for each TV!  It flips open for total control, but what I love is that when it's flipped closed, you get your basic volume and channel control buttons on the outside - easy to get at and uncluttered! Check this out, one of the very best ideas I've seen in a long time! A similar device even won an award for innovation from CES, so I'm not the only one who thinks it's a great invention!

It's NOT A Phone! It's A BRILLIANT Idea!!

It's An Ingenious Remote Control You're Gonna LOVE!

Finally! No More Tables Full Of Remotes!!!

PLUS- Flip It Closed And...

Simple Channel & Volume Buttons Are On The Outside!

Control ALL Your Devices From ONE Remote!

Flip Remote

At Last! The Solution To "Remote Control Madness"!!!

If you like EASY, you're gonna love this remote!! First of all, this single remote will control up to FOUR different devices at once! Including TV VCR DVD, Cable Satellite or TV/DVD Combo unit!

Just imagine...no more having to deal with 2, 3 or 3 or even 4 remotes! No more having to search and try to find the remote to the TV and then the one for the Cable/Satellite, and then the one for the VCR, and then one for the DVD player even! This one remote will replace all of those!

Here's another thing you're gonna love: this is Easy to Program!

The problem with most remote controls is they're hard to programming, right? Well this remote has a really cool feature that allows the remote to automatically "discover" devices connected to your system!

PLUS, this is compatible with most major brand-name TV and audio/video components!

Why The Heck Does It Look Like A Flip Phone?????

Yeah, you've probably noticed that this remote looks just like a "Flip" phone! Well, there's actually an absolutely ingenious reason for that!

Let's say you're watching TV. If you're like me, the buttons you use the most are the ones that change the channel and volume. With most remotes, you have to hunt and search for those buttons among a zillion the other ones! With this "Fllip" remote, just close it shut and you've got a clean and uncluttered look with only the buttons you use the most on top! No more having to hunt and search, no more accidentlypressing the wrong buttons! When it's closed, it even fits into your pocket! How's that for convenience?

Sentry 4-in-1 FLIP Universal TV Remote

Oh, and get this - it even features a sleep timer so you can set the TV to automatically turn off! Now THAT's what I call relaxing!!!

Tip of the Day

Memory Card Readers

If you have a digital camera, cellphone or other device that uses memory cards then you've probably used or heard of a memory card reader before. A memory card reader is a device in which you insert an applicable card to transfer pictures, music and what-have-you over to your computer and vice versa. Some of the newer computers come with memory card readers built-in, but the most common form factor is the standard little box connected via a USB cable.

So how does one go about using one of these handy-dandy devices? Let's explore, shall we?

First things first, we need to hook the card reader to our computer. Look at the front of your PC, do you see anything that looks like this? If not, it might be on the back. You'll have to stretch!

This USB port is where we'll be plugging in our card reader device. Do that now, if you're ready.

Once you plug the device in, your computer should make some noises, which, if you're running Windows XP or Windows Vista, is perfectly normal. The bleeps and bloops simply mean that it's installing drivers. If you still happen to be running Windows 98, stop now and upgrade already!

Next, you can go ahead and remove the memory card in question from your camera or other device and insert it into the appropriate sized port in your card reader. Different card readers have different slot sizes, but if it fits securely, chances are that it will work. The most common size is SD and Mini SD, so keep that in mind when looking to purchase a reader.

After inserting your card into the card reader you'll see a window pop up that looks similar to this:

Choose the option that says " Open Folder to View Files". This will give you access to all of the pictures, music or what-have-you that's stored on your card.

After that, it's pretty self explanatory. Just cut or copy the files you want and paste into a folder on your computer. You can even drag and drop stuff, too! Just like you would with a floppy disk!

When you're done, simply unplug the card reader from your computer, pull the card out of the reader and slip it back into the device you were using! Ta'da!

I am an avid reader. I just wish there were more hours in a day available for reading! But what I love more than just reading, is sharing my thoughts about what I’ve read. Sharing a reading experience with other people is awesome, because it allows you to see the material you just read through someone else’s perspective. It can be eye-opening and thought provoking.

Here at Book Glutton not only can you read books online for free, but you can also chat about them chapter by chapter if you want. You don’t even have to be a member in order to read the books here but I think that the registration process is so easy that being a member is easy and rewarding.

To register just click the Login link, this will take you to the login page where you can then click the Sign Up link. It’s so easy – all you have to do is fill out the form and click the Submit button then you’ll be automatically logged in and ready to go.

If you click Books on the navigation strip at the top, you’ll be whisked away to the book section where you can find random reads, as well as, directions on searching for books and uploading books to the site. If you click the Surprise me button, you’ll be automatically sent to a random book.

I love the look of the books on the site. The background is neutral, so it doesn’t distract you from the work. The panels for chatting, and leaving notes are closed so that you can read privately if you’d like. The book is center on the screen and you’ll notice two blue tabs on either side, one is labeled Talk, the other is labeled Mark. Talk is the chat screen (you must be logged in to chat) and Mark is the place where you can leave your thoughts about a particular passage. To turn the page, click the pointing hands at the bottom of the page.

You can even set up Groups. You’ll find directions on how to do this on the Groups page, which you can get to off the main navigation strip at the top of the page.

Plus, the grip is just fantastic and I can personally attest that even when your hands are dripping wet (or snow covered), it's easy to keep ahold of!

Get this - since this is an LED flashlight, it seems to run FOREVER on a set of batteries! Changing batteries or running out of juice is going to be a very RARE thing now! Oh, PLUS don't forget that you won't ever have to worry about the LEDs burning out - Heck, even if you kept it on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, it would take 11 YEARS before they would burn out! WOW!!!

If you've looked at LED flashlights, you know they are the pedigree of the lighting world - for a light like this, you're looking at least $20-$30 easy. Your cost? Again we're talking just $6.97 and US Shipping is FREE!! It's the BEST DEAL we've ever offered on an LED Flashlight! Give it a try, you'll be glad you did!
