Quick Tips

Should I even bother installing Windows 7 right now?

As some may know, Microsoft is giving users an opportunity to try out Windows 7 Release Candidate, completely free of charge, to get a taste of things to come before the finished operating system releases sometime this holiday season. Naturally, I've been getting a lot of queries about this, so I wanted to take the time to clarify for those faced with an installation deliberation. So, without further delay...

So, should you install Windows 7 Release Candidate?

A:
That depends on how tech savvy you consider yourself. W7 is essentially an unfinished operating system, and although the early reviews have been generally good, there are still things that can go wrong and hardware/software compatibility issues that can arise. That's why Microsoft has suggested that users do not install Windows 7 on their main computer. Microsoft has also stated that they will not be offering tech support for 7 until it releases proper. So if something goes wrong, you're on your own!

Remember also that to install 7, you must do a fresh install; meaning you will have to back-up, format and re-install everything.

One more thing: Although Windows 7 is free to try out, it's far from a free ride. As of June 1st 2010, all release candidates will start shutting themselves down every two hours. How inconvenient! Guess you'll have to go buy the full version and go through the whole installation process over again!

If you were on the fence before about installing Windows 7 RC, I hope I helped to shove you in a suitable (and safe) direction. It's not for everyone in it's current state, but if you have a second PC sitting around, it might be worth your time to check it out.

Q:
I'm constantly on the Internet and get tired of typing in the full website addresses. Is there a shortcut?

A:
It can get pretty tedious typing in h-t-t-p-semicolon-backslash-backslash-w-w-w-dot-whatever-dot-c-o-m. So next time you're in a hurry and don't want to bother with all of that, try this...

Type the name of the site in the address bar and press Ctrl while you hit Enter . The "www" and ".com" will be added automatically for you. Ta dah!

(Please, note that this only works with .com's and not .org, .net, .gov, .tv, etc...)

MS Office

One Click Cell Addresses

Did you know that there's a faster way to enter cell references in Excel formulae? I'm talking about a way that doesn't involve typing cell addresses. Did you know?!

Interested? (Yeah, I thought you might be!)

Here's the scoop.

Next time you're entering a formula and you get to a cell reference (like A5, for example), instead of typing A5, use your mouse and click on A5.

Some of you are already thinking, "Now why would I do that? I can type faster than I can use the mouse."

True enough, but I sometimes find that I'm not positive of the location of the cell I need and it's not currently visible on the screen. So, what does that mean? Well, it means that I've got to scroll out there, find the cell address, double check that I've got the correct address and finally go back to type it in.

Sound like a hassle?

Yes, it is! And let's not overlook our ability to either mess up the cell address (even though we double checked our info) or to forget the address completely.

So, this leads us back to the beginning of the whole thing. Oh no!

Now, here's where the time saving thing kicks in.

Begin your formula with the customary = and proceed to enter functions and/or symbols as usual.

When you get to a cell reference, try this one. Instead of looking up the address of the cell referenced in the formula, click on the cell itself.

Poof!

You should find that the cell's address has been entered into the formula for you, so assuming that you didn't click in the wrong place, there's no location typos or forgotten addresses.

Cool, huh?!

Tip of the Day

Form Self-filling Programs

As the World Wide Web became popular in the ‘90s, browsing evolved from being a part-time to full-time activity. The World Wide Web offered many conveniences to the point that you wouldn’t even need to get off your chair. There is one key ingredient to this “one-stop” Web experience, and that is registration forms. You are frequently required to register information before you can avail yourself of all the features. The required information may vary from being simplistic to something comparable to writing a resume. This is where form self-filling comes in. This feature works by completing forms, from registration to shopping carts, with only a few keystrokes or mouse clicks. As Web usage grows, so to does the demand for more powerful form self-filling programs. If you fill out many forms or have multiple passwords, than most form self-filler programs can be very useful – but none are perfect. Each works better for a particular type of Web site but, thus far, none have been able to dominate the market. Of course, when dealing with personal information, security is a primary concern but, unfortunately, no universal standards have yet been established.

Gator E-wallet is one such form self-filling application. Described as a “helpful online companion,” it helps a user fill out forms, logins, and passwords. It makes things so simple that many Web users download it as a necessity. However, there is one major drawback – it also collects Web surfing habits. While personal data collection is not uncommon, Gator uses what it collects for its own gain. During E-wallet installation, you may or may not knowingly install a companion application called GAIN, which plagues you with pop-up ads or with hijacked search results based on your information collected by GAIN. Not only that, Gator also has a questionable practice of “drive-by downloads” resulting in unwanted and unnecessary applications being installed on your PC. Below is a screen shot of some of those applications installed by Gator.

Ok, so we now have established that Gator is something you should NOT have on your PC, but how does that solve form self-filling? There are several safer alternatives that offer form self-filling, some are freeware and some carry a fee. A few examples are:

FireFox

Firefox is a popular browser with a built-in feature that remembers passwords and other stored information for Web sites. Using Firefox will result in a much better Web experience, allowing you to gain the advantage of storing login information in the browser in a reasonably secure way. One thing nice about this feature is that it can be turned off or on any time.

AccountLogon

AccountLogon is a free personal information management software which provides you with fast and secure one-click access to all of your online information. Some of its features include:

Single Click Logon
Logon to any of your accounts with a single Click!

Windows / IE Toolbar Integration
Accessible from a single icon in the Windows Taskbar and IE Toolbar.

Works with all IE browsers (MSN, AOL, Avante etc.)
Accessible from the browsers context menu.

Skinned Interface
Easy to use skinned interface - no more boring windows!

Security Features
Extra strong encryption protects your information from unauthorized access and many built-in security features give you full control of the program. Screen Auto Lock, Password Masking, Logon Timeout, In-Memory Encryption, and Security Levels.
Below is a screenshot of the AccountLogon 2.5 software

Google Toolbar

Google Toolbar Autofill is a feature that comes with the Google Toolbar plugin for browsers. The AutoFill feature helps you complete Web forms with one click. First, you need to create an AutoFill profile and then click the AutoFill button to automatically fill forms with the information provided. Below is a screenshot of the AutoFill profile page:

These are just a few samples of secure form self-filling applications that you can currently use to enhance your browsing experience – but what about the future? Even though there is currently no security standard in cyberspace, form self-fillers and e-wallet programs continue to gain popularity. Soon, if the barriers to entry are not removed, each of us will have a digital ID that is both brokered and registered by one of only a few large corporations. The most promising solutions, like the American Express Blue card, have already been developed and are merely awaiting the wider use of smart chip reader technology. This, when combined with other emerging biometric technology, will undoubtedly promise a more secure future – but controlled by whom? The only way to be sure is to always read your EULA (End User License Agreement) and search the Web before installing any application.

Today's Feature

Google Earth 5

Awhile back, I was telling you about the release of Google Earth 4. Well, lucky for you, Google has released version 5! The new version has some really cool new features you just have to check out!

If you've used Google Earth before, you probably already know about many of the features, such as being able to look up anywhere on the planet and see awesome aerial satellite photos. Well, version 5 even introduces something you've never seen before! With Google Earth 5, you can go below the ocean and explore the sea floor. How cool is that?!

Other than looking into the ocean, you can also look into the past. With the new version of Google Earth, you can click on the clock icon and see how places looked in the past and how they have changed over time. That feature is awesome for looking at progress while something was being built, such as a stadium or sky scraper.

Amanda's Coolsite

A Conversation with Sir Ian McKellen

I have been dying to write this site up to share with you. But I wanted to let it percolate in my brain a little bit so I could do it justice. This is a completely interactive conversation with Sir Ian McKellen. You'll be able to follow prompts in any order you wish, to experience the content how you desire. But your first choice is whether you want to use the site full-screen or in the browser. If you have the internet connection for it I recommend going full-screen.

For anyone who is teaching Shakespeare you definitely want to tune into this site, it would be a great resource for getting teens interested in it. He successfully relates his roles in X-Men, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy to what is going on in Shakespeare’s works.

The site focuses on the opening speech of Richard III. McKellen goes through the speech several lines at time, and helps explain what is going on, how the language works, and what it signifies and he answers questions about the speech.

This would also be a great tool, to help actors understand how to perform Shakespeare. He discusses how the verse really shapes the text, and how you would perform it.

He also discusses whether the play is historically accurate, why 14-year olds should read Shakespeare, why Richard is a sympathetic character, as well as, provides three different clips of this speech from various productions of the play.

He even provides a copy of his book Richard III and how he turned it into a film for free on his website. Teachers if you head to his website you can also check out the .PDF Study Guide!

This is an excellent for anyone who loves Shakespeare, or is just trying to understand it. Check it out today!

PREPARE TO BE BLOWN AWAY!!!

WARNING: Make Sure You Have The Volume Turned DOWN Before you Plug These in!!

These Portable Speakers Are A "Concert Hall In a Box"!!!Folding Speaker System

I'VE GOT TO TELL YA WHAT HAPPENED when we first got these in. I Plugged these into the headphone jack of my desktop computer and clicked on an Internet radio station to get some music.BUT I didn't bother to check the VOLUME LEVEL of my computer! When I turned on the power to these portable speakers, it startled me so much, I JUMPED ABOUT A FOOT OUT OF MY CHAIR!

WOW!!! WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THESE "LITTLE" SPEAKERS COULD BE THAT POWERFUL!!

I'm tellin' ya...you're gonna be surprised how POWERFUL this little speaker system is! Whew!!!

What's funny is this speaker system is actually made so you carry it around with you wherever go. They're about the size of an eye glass case and the speakers themselves fold up and tuck safely away inside the hard-shell case. So when I first saw these I thought, "These are so small! How POWERFUL could these actually be? Well, I found out quick enough...PLENTY POWERFUL!!! These things ROCK...and you're gonna love 'em!!!

What I like about these is that they work with ANY AUDIO DEVICE that has a headphone jack! So you can use this with your mp3 player, satellite radio, laptop computer, CD player, portable DVD player even portable game! (The kids will LOVE to hear their gaming devices take on a "BIG 3-D sound!)

PLUS, you don't have to plug these into an AC electrical outlet because they work on four "AA" batteries, so you can play your audio devices just about anywhere! which makes 'em REALLY convenient! There's a audio cord that's neatly attached to the speakers, and you just plug that into whatever device you want to listen to! And when you're done, just unplug the cord and tuck it back into the case! THAT'S A REALLY A GREAT idea not only for easy travel but to protect the speaker system, too!

What's REALLY AMAZING about these speakers is that YOU CAN EVEN USE THESE WITH YOUR DESKTOP COMPUTER! How's THAT for versatility! So, if you don't have a set of speakers for your desktop computer or you're not happy with the ones you have, before you rush out and buy a more expensive set of speakers, PUT THESE to the test just like I did! You're gonna LOVE the sound! Plus - you'll be saving yourself a LOT of money!

And the "icing on the cake" is that you'll ALSO have a FANTASTIC set of portable speakers that you can take with you anywhere and play your portable devices! Oh man!!! How sweet is THAT? The only thing that can make this even sweeter is an amazing price - $14.97 and US shipping is FREE!!! Is that crazy or what???

I've heard small computer systems that were in the $40-50 range that didn't sound HALF as good as these beauties! These are something you're gonna want to have for home AND on the go so grab one now at this crazy price!
