Quick Tips

Refresh Rate Basics

So, I was looking in our computer tip archives the other day and found a tip on the term "refresh rate." I was reading through it and although it was very helpful, it didn't give just the basics of what the refresh rate really is. And I figured a lot of you would probably want to know, so that's exactly what I'm going to do for you today. Let's get back to the basics, baby!

In terms of computers, the refresh rate is the number of times per second that the display on your computer monitor is illuminated. Now, even though this goes along with the term "frame rate," I don't want you to get the two confused. The frame rate measures how often a display changes from one image to another, but the refresh rate actually deals with the repeated illumination of the same frames. So, if you ever have trouble with your monitor flickering or something similar, you may need to reset your refresh rate so that you'll have a clearer display.

To find out what your refresh rate is set to, right click on your desktop and choose Properties. Next, click on the Settings tab and then hit the Advanced button. Once that new window opens, click on the Monitor tab and you'll see your refresh rate under the Monitor settings area. If you click on the pull down menu, you'll see that you can choose from a refresh rate of 60, 70, 72, 75 and 85 Hertz. A comfortable rate is 85 for larger monitors (17" or 19"), but if you have a smaller sized monitor, you may want to try a lower refresh rate. Once you have it set to fit your needs, you'll have the best display your computer has ever seen!

PLUS Save 74% By Getting It From US!!! WOW!!

This was the hit of the month yesterday! Hundreds and hundreds of these fantastic gadgets just flew out the door - THANK YOU to everyone who ordered! Seems like everyone is grabbing one for themselves and a few extras for friends! These are absolutely fantastic and something we should have all had a long time ago! Want to know what's causing all the excitement? Read on!:

WOW!! You've just gotta check this one out! We just got an absolutely amazing deal on a little gadget from Memorex called a TravelSync that's going to change the way you deal with your files forever! This ingenious little gadget allows you to effortlessly transfer data from one USB device to another - and get this - you do it without any computer involved! Really!

Why is this so cool? Why am I so excited? Why are you gonna love this? Let's consider a few scenarios that happen all the time!

First, have you ever ran out of memory on your digital camera's card? Sure, everyone's taken that train to frustrationville! Wouldn't be fantastic if you could simply transfer your pictures to a USB flash drive and empty that card without the hassle of getting a computer out? Am I crazy? Nope -  With this handy gadget, you just plug your camera in on one side, then stick in a flash drive on the other side!  Press a button and your images are magically transferred right from your camera to the flash drive - no computer necessary! Then, just clear your card and keep on shooting (you can even have this device clear your card after you're done if you like!)!

Memorex TravelSync Portable Transfer Device

Ooohh, yeah - here's one that happens ALL the time - and we've all been there! Have you ever needed a copy of a file someone else has? You know, maybe you just need a copy of a document, maybe you want a quick copy of a photo, maybe a favorite song - whatever. It may be on a friend's flash drive, camera, MP3 player - you name it, but you want that file!

Well, with this you just plug in the device that has the file on one side (could be a flash drive camera, external HD, memory card, ect) then select the file you want from the list. Next, plug in your flash drive (or whatever USB storage you prefer) into the other side and a couple button presses later you have the file! Seriously - No booting up the computer, no opening up the flash drive, no copying the file over to the desktop, no opening up the other flash drive, no copying to the new flash drive, no shutting down! Once you go the direct copy route with this little guy, you'll never go back!!

OK, want another example? What about this - do you have a external hard drive for backups or extra storage? With this, you could actually transfer your photos, files, music, ect directly to your hard drive from your camera (flash drive, memory card, MP3 player) without ever booting up your computer! Talk about a time saver (and a brilliant way to do quick backups)!

Oh, and what if you come home from a trip with a bunch of memory cards in your pocket you want to backup to that same external HD? Don't mess with your computer - just plug a memory card reader into one side of your TravelSync and your HD into the other! Again, just a button press or two and your files are all transferred from your card reader to the external HD! Couldn't be easier! This would be just spectacular if you're on the road and want to quickly backup those once-in-a-lifetime trip photos on a portable HD!!

It's not just for photos either! Got MP3s? Then you'll LOVE this! You want to transfer the music on your MP3 player to another MP3 player? Guess what? This can transfer your files with no computer required! WAIT! Want to put your MP3s on a flash drive, external HD, or memory card? Yup, you guessed it - this is your go to device!

Here's The Bottom Line - If you have USB devices that store data (memory cards, flash drives, digital cameras, MP3 players, external hard drives, ect) this can transfer that data from one device to another with NO computer necessary! This is such an ingenious idea! I don't know how many times I just needed a copy of a file and had to mess around with my computer to do all the copying! This makes it easy!

PLUS, it's incredibly easy to use! Most operations are just a couple button pushes away from being done! Even lets you copy everything or selected files - and the LCD screen makes it simple!

This is really one of those devices that once you have it, you'll wonder how you lived without it!

How much do these go for?  You won't believe your price, but first I gotta tell you "their" prices! Get this - right this second Memorex has these listed on their site for $50 and Amazon is at $48.99! Looking around, I couldn't find ANYONE less than $41 for these things - and pretty much everyone was charging shipping on top of it! Computers 101

Q:
Can you explain to me what an MP4 is? I've obviously heard of MP3, but now there's an MP4?! I'm so lost and confused. Please help!

A:
Yes, there is! I know, isn't it amazing how fast the world of technology develops? It seems like we get caught up on one thing and the next day, there's something new to learn about. I mean, we shouldn't complain, because all of the technology we're surrounded by is what keeps some of us going each day, but it definitely is a little hard to stay on top of everything that comes about.

But even though understanding everything gets a little difficult sometimes, it's not impossible. I promise that after today, you will fully understand one more computer term and you'll be able to check it off your "find out what this is" list! Okay, let's get right into it!

To start with a quick definition, MP4 files are compressed video files. Their main purpose is to make video files much smaller so that they are easier to work with and support. Video files used to be very big in size and they were very difficult to work with. But now, the same files are compressed with the same material and they go by the new name of MP4s.

MP4 files work very similarly to MP3 files in that they are compressed files that do not affect the quality of sound. (In case you're not sure, MP3s are music and audio files, so an MP4 is just taking that to the next level with videos). The term MP4 is also known as MPEG-4 AVC, which stands for advanced video coding. Now, if you're still not sure how the whole MP4 technology works, make sure you keep reading, because it's going to get even more interesting!

Since MP4s deal mostly with video files, they're a little more complex than the MP3 music and audio files. But they're still able to be compressed by using special coding procedures. For example, certain aspects of the files are minimized. Those are usually the temporal and spatial redundancies. The motion and intra estimations of the frequencies are usually transformed as well. And last, but not least, the file goes through a lot of compression and decompression, which is referred to as codec.

Now, I'm sure you're probably wondering if there's such a thing as an MP4 player, right? Well, yes there is. It works just like any other media player. You can purchase the device at any regular electronics store and you then just hook it up to your computer or television. It really is that easy, even if it doesn't seem like it!

Of course, as with everything else, the MP4 technology has its ups and downs. Let's start with the advantages. MP4s are able to produce videos with a DVD quality at a rate of 1 Mbps or less with a broadband Internet connection. (That's blazing fast!) So, if you were to get an MP4 player, you could get your videos and watch them in a matter of seconds. MP4 players can also play older MP formats, including MP3 audio files.

As for the disadvantages, there will more than likely be several piracy issues within the MP4 technology. The MP3 format went through that as well. As you may already know, there are pirated versions of movies on the Internet that are ready for download at any time. So, with MP4s mainly dealing with videos, the piracy problems are sure to get out of hand as this technology becomes more and more popular. Just keep an eye out for that!

So, there it is. The MP4 technology explained for you in as simple of terms as I could come up with. I do hope you have a better understanding of it now and who knows, maybe you'll be the next person to start MP4ing around!

MS Office

Don't Forget Your Flags

I don't know about you, but I'm terrible with flagged e-mails.

Flagging something for later is a great idea until you forget it's at the bottom of your e-mail list! In those cases, it's forgotten just like everything I didn't flag.

So, now what?

Well, in MS Outlook 2007, you can not only mark it with a flag, but you can also set a due date. With the due date set, Outlook will list the item in your To-Do list on the To-Do Bar.

With the message on the list, you'll find that it's not as easy to forget since the To-Do list automatically moves things up in priority as the due date nears.

If this sounds like a good idea, here's what you need to know:

  • The first step is to right click over the message you want to flag.

  • From the menu that opens, choose Follow Up.

  • You'll then see a list of choices for setting a due date. Use either one of the pre-set dates, a custom date or no due date at all. All of those choices will add the message to your To-Do list.

Once it's in the To-Do list, assuming you use the list regularly, it shouldn't be so easy to forget.

Wow, if only this were available for everything in life!

Easy To Use Software Creates Amazing MP3 From Internet Radio!

Grab Hundreds Of Songs Per Hour!

You May Never Pay For Another MP3!

Our staff is pretty much digital shell-shocked by the number of order for this! It's absolutely FLYING out of here! Hundreds - actually THOUSANDS are getting this and LOVING it! Thank YOU to everyone who ordered so far! You'll LOVE all the free music you're gonna be downloading! If you haven't ordered your copy yet, what are you waiting for? You've just got to try this!

Again, it's called Skwid and, yeah, yeah, we all know it's an oddball name. Once you get over it though, you'll be blown away by what this does! Think about this:

You love music right? Well, wouldn't it be great if there was a way to legally get all the songs you ever wanted - for free? With this software - you can! Interested? I thought so!

This amazing software lets you record internet radio and turns the tracks into high-quality MP3s for use on your MP3 player, iPod, Computer, CDs, whatever!! You can get thousands of songs - and they won't cost you a cent! You may never buy another MP3! WOW!

Here's how it works - You can search for the type of music you enjoy, or pick from a list. There a HUGE variety - 23 main genres, but with all the "sub-genres" I counted over 200 different types of music you can choose from, so you're bound to find all the types of music you enjoy! From there, just hit the record button! You can have it record tracks form just one station, do dozens of stations at once, or just pick your favorites! TONS of options!

I had mine set to record from 20 stations simultaneously and WOW! I had a whoppin' 38 songs in 15 minutes! Is that amazing or what? I had to sort though and decide which ones to keep, but you gotta admit, that's pretty cool! What an amazing program!

PLUS this thing is loaded down with radio stations too! We're talking 2600+ internet radio stations at your fingertips - and more are added all the time!

PLUS - This software actually allows you to add your own stations! That's right - if you listen to internet radio and your station isn't listed, you can add it to this program! Now that's cool! You'll never run out of songs to record, that's for sure! I think I'm going to find my favorite 10 or 20 stations and record from those. Heck, you can even use this just to listen to internet radio if you like! (I'm listening to it as I type this!)

Oh, and here's the kicker! Not only can this record internet radio stations - it can record ANYTHING coming through your computer's sound card! Wow - think about that for a minute! If you have a favorite song you just have to get, simply find it online, play it, and hit Record with this program! This would work great if a new song came out and the video to the song was online - just watch the video and record! You'd have the song on your MP3 player before it was even available in stores! Now that's serious power! WOW!

So, what do you do with all these songs after you sort 'em out? Well, once you record them just import them to your favorite MP3 software (or right to your player) - or iPod users can import them into iTunes and use with your iPod! How cool is that?

Plus, since these are just standard MP3s, you can also play them on Windows Media player with zero problems - even send them to CDs or your MP3 player right from Windows Media Player - EZ!!!!!! That's right - you don't even need an MP3 player to enjoy these free songs!

What about the quality? I've been pleasantly surprised - and really happy with it! The songs sound great and most of the time you even get the artist name! PLUS in many cases, the radio stations are broadcasting in 128 bit format - the same quality you normally get when you buy MP3s!

What's that? You already have a huge CD collection you wish was in MP3 format? Yup, you guessed - This can convert your CDs to MP3s too! Just pop in the CD, and select the songs you want to convert - then click the Convert button! It's that easy! A few mouse click and all your favorite CD songs are now MP3s! WOW!!

BONUS! In addition to all the great audio recording features, this can also take your personal video files and convert them so they work on your iPod! What a great way to show off your videos!

Finally, we're trying something new with this one - it's a download! That's right - we worked out a deal with the publisher, so you don't have to wait to get this amazing program in the mail! Now, this is our first time doing a download only run like this, but we should be able to get your code to you within 48 hours - beats waiting for the mailman!

Your cost? You're not going to believe this - just $9.97! Is that amazing or what? Most of the time, MP3 music is about a buck a song, so figure this will pay for itself after it finds you just 17 great songs! I had that many "keepers" in less than a half hour! Give it a try, you'll be glad you did!

Tip of the Day

PayPal Security Key

PayPal has recently introduced the new PayPal Security Key service and that's what I'd like to talk to you about today! The PayPal Security Key service is essentially designed to add an additional layer of security to the existing PayPal authentication, which uses a username and password. If a user signs up with the PayPal Security Key service, they'll be authenticated by using not only their username and password, but also by the additional security key generated by the service. The service is being offered in association with VeriSign ID Protection. VeriSign is an industry leader in online security and protection services. They're bringing their expertise and experience into play. The PayPal Security Key will be usable on the PayPal Web site, on the eBay Web site and on any other site that displays the VIP (VeriSign ID Protection) logo.

Why a PayPal Security Key?

As you know, authentication on most Web sites is done through a unique username and password combination, but since that information is stored on the site’s server, it becomes susceptible to online security threats. For example, somebody may hack into the Web site’s server, access the username and password information and then use it to authenticate themselves onto the site. However, such breaches are rare and Web sites of large companies usually have very strong security measures to defend against such attacks. A much more common scenario is the log in information for a user can actually be stolen or overheard by a malicious user. That malicious user can then use it to log in to the Web site. The additional layer of security that the PayPal Security Key provides is a way to combat that problem.

With the PayPal Security Key, even if a malicious user does gain access to your unique log in information, they still can't get ahold of the security key this service provides you. Therefore, it's quite impossible for them to be able to log in to your account.

How Does the PayPal Security Key Work?

The best feature of the security key is it's literally unique every time you use it. Each time you need to log in, a new key is used. Even if a malicious user was lucky enough to get one such key, it doesn’t matter, because the next time you log in, the key will no longer be valid. Cool, huh?!

The way a user gets the unique key each time works in two different ways:

1.) Security Key Token: PayPal sends you an electronic device called the Security Key Token, which generates a unique six digit number every 30 seconds. When you need to log in, you simply turn on the Security Key Token and use the number it generates for you.

2.) Mobile Phone Security Key: When you need to log in, you request a key on the PayPal (or eBay) Web site. A security code or key is then sent to your mobile phone via a text message.

How Much Does the Service Cost?

The Security Key Token has a one time cost to receive the electronic device, which is $5 at present. Of course, if you were to lose the key, a request for a replacement is required and that would cost $5 as well. The Mobile Phone Security Key has no cost whatsoever. Bear in mind, however, that your cellular provider will charge you for the SMS text message. You'll simply be charged whatever your provider normally charges for a text message.

Are There Any Potential Issues with the Service?

Of course, there are potential issues with any new service. The problem in this case is, for some reason, you may not have access to the Security Key Token device or to your cell phone at all times. But if that ever happens, you'll still be able to log in using a set of security questions.

Fortunately, it's hard to have your username and password, as well as, your security key compromised. For one thing, as I mentioned before, the key changes every time you have to log in, so getting a single key or security code is useless to a malicious user. Alternatively, even if a malicious user was to find a Security Key Token device, they'll still be unable to use it, because they don't know what account it's linked to.

Note that you'll need to have either the Security Key Token or a mobile phone (with a plan that allows you to receive text messages) in order to use the PayPal Security Key service. Additional information is available here if you'd like to know more. I hope you find this tip to be most useful!

Today's Feature

Revo Uninstaller

One thing I can't stand is having a computer full of programs that I don't use anymore! Extra programs on a computer do nothing but slow it down. That's why it's a good idea to go through your system every once in awhile and uninstall programs you don't use anymore.

Usually, uninstalling is done by going to your system's Control Panel and opening the Add/Remove Programs section (listed as Programs in Vista). That way works just fine most of the time, but sometimes it just doesn't cut it. The other day, that type of problem happened to me. I was trying to uninstall a program and it just wouldn't come out. There were leftover files and registry entries all over the place. Because of that, I started looking for a program that would fix my problem.

What I found is called Revo Uninstaller. Revo Uninstaller is a free program that accurately and safely removes unwanted, stubborn programs from your computer. It begins by making a system restore point, which is great, because if anything goes wrong, it can be undone. Next, it runs the regular uninstaller for the program you want to remove. After that's completed, it will do one of two things. If you choose the Safe uninstall, it will show you the leftover files and registry lines and allow you to delete them yourself. If you choose the Moderate uninstall, it will do everything for you.

I chose the Moderate option and didn't run into any issues. However, choosing the Safe method gives you more control over the uninstall. So, the choice is yours!

When it comes to uninstallers, this program is great. You can download the Revo Uninstaller for yourself right here. Enjoy!

What the Font?!

Have you ever run across an image with a font you really liked, but didn’t know what it was? Well, never fear! Now, you can identify those mystery fonts with ease on this Web site. Oh yeah!

How does it work? Well, it’s quite simple! You just click on the Choose button and then find the image with the font you like wherever you saved it on your computer. Or, you can put in the URL of the image with the font and then click on Upload Image. The site will then try to match the font to the best of its ability. For more tips on submitting your font for a match, make sure you check out the usage guide.

What happens next is the application tries to identify characters in the image you submitted. So, you’ll see your image repeated many times down the page with a box next to it. In the box, there will be a character the application thinks it found in the image. You need to make sure each character is correct. If they aren’t, go ahead and click on the Search button.

Now, it will load up which fonts it thinks matches and you can then scroll down the page and compare your image to the fonts they have selected.

If it can't match the font, don’t despair! Help is still there waiting for you in the What the Font Forum. Just click on the Consult an Expert link at the bottom of the page and you’ll be taken to the log in page. It’s really easy to sign up. Just fill out the form and click on the Create Account button. Then just submit your query to the forum members. The people on there are really good at figuring out which font is in your image. You’ll see the most recent posts to the font forum right on the front page and you can also click Next to look through all the entries.

This site is a real haven for font junkies like me. Check it out today!

January Wallpaper

Here's January's wallpaper. It's all free, so enjoy!

Yellowstone Falls

This was shot just before sunrise at the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. This amazing falls is always a treat to see and I was early enough, I had the place to myself!

Simple Flower

I don't know about you, but I needed a break from all the snow and ice, so I found this and decided to put a little green into January! Shot last spring in the Smoky Mountains; a Trillium, I think.

Rock and Ice

This abstract looking shot is of thick ice that had formed on some reddish rock in the Smoky Mountains last spring. So, if you want a cold theme for your desktop, this should do it!

All can be found here:

Enjoy!
