Computer Tips [ 9 Million Infected With Dangerous Virus + Save Online Videos + Get Your Printer Back Online ] 01/21/09

Quick Tips

Get Your Printer Online

So, tell me, have you ever gone to print something out and you can't do it because you get an error message that says "Printer Offline?" It happens to the best of us, but that doesn't make it any less annoying! So, what can you do when that happens? Luckily, you have a few options you can try when you need to get your printer back "online." Would you like to hear about them? I thought you might. Well, keep reading and you will!

The first thing you should try is simply turning your printer off, wait a minute or so and then turn it back on. That may fix your problem right then and there. If not, try disconnecting the cable that hooks into your computer and then reconnect it. After you do that, you'll also want to restart your computer to make sure everything lines back up. If you're still having trouble after that, try sending something to your printer to print and when you see the printer icon pop up in your taskbar, double click on it. Then go to the File menu and make sure the option of "Work Offline" is unchecked.

Another thing you can try is right clicking on the printer icon and clicking the choice that says "Set printer online." Or, if all else fails, there may be an actual button on your printer that can help you get it connected again. If your printer has one, it will say something like "Online" and you can press that button to reconnect your printer so that it will print once again. Now, all printers are different, so don't hold me to that, but if your printer does have that button, it's an easy fix for this type of problem. Hopefully your printer situation can be fixed with one of these suggestions, but if not, you can always refer to your user manual or contact the manufacturer for additional help. Good luck, my printing friends!

Need An Easy Way To Get Data Off Your Old Hard Drive?

How About A Really Cool Way To Backup Data?

On Sale Today ONLY 01-21-2009!

Ohh, Keep reading, you're definitely gonna want to check this out ~

WOW - we just came across the handiest little USB Cable Adapter that you're absolutely going to love! Check out these two great uses:

Easily retrieve information from your old hard drive ~
This is super easy, you simply hook the cable to your old hard drive (or even a laptop) and then plug into a USB port on your current computer and "presto" ~ your old drive now shows up as an external hard drive. How simple and easy is that? You can now access any and all the information you have on that drive and save it to your current computer, a flash drive, whatever ~ super simple, anyone can do this!

Turn an internal drive into a convenient external drive for back-ups ~
Do you know what external hard drives are going for compared to internal drives? Well, a 500GB internal drive is about $150.00 and the 500GB external drive is about $279.99 ~ yikes! The main difference is the nice case on the external drive so when it sits on your desk, it looks pretty. I gotta tell you, for a backup drive I don't need it to look pretty ~ I just want it to hold my data and then sit in the desk drawer quietly until I need it again ;-)

Now, this is where this USB Cable Adapter comes in really handy. Again, just hook the adapter up to your "internal" drive (it doesn't have to be inside your computer) and then plug into an existing USB port on your computer. Again, easy-peasy! The drive will show up as an external drive on your computer and you can easily back-up all your files ~ pretty cool, huh? When you're done, you can disconnect and store the drive in a drawer ~ no need to have it taking up desk space! And, you've saved about $130.00 by using an "internal" drive as your backup drive!

If you find yourself in either of these situations, I'm telling you ~ you've got to give this a try. You won't believe how easy this really is ~ even the "non-techies" will be surprised! Oh, yeah ~ almost forgot, TODAY ONLY your cost is just $19.97 and that includes FREE shipping in the US!

Q:
When filling out a form online, why do I always have to fill in my e-mail address and password more than once? It's not hard to do, but it's a hassle. Have any explanations?

A:
I'm sure you're not the only one who has ever wondered about that, so this is an excellent question! It's true. Most of the time when you go to fill out an online form, you're asked to enter in your e-mail address and your password twice. Why is that? It just doesn't seem to make much sense. It's not that big of a deal and it's easy to do, but you're right, it is somewhat of a hassle, especially if you're in a hurry! So, there must be some valid reason why you're required to do it, right? Well, as a matter of fact, there is and it's actually all very plain and simple. Let's check it out!

Most Web sites that have you fill out forms require you to enter your e-mail address twice simply for the purpose of making sure it was entered correctly. Perhaps your finger slipped when you were typing it in the first time. If you didn't have to enter it again, you wouldn't receive any of the informative e-mails you need from that site. But, since you typed your address twice, the Web site is able to tell right away if everything matches up or not.

It's also done to eliminate any fake e-mail addresses. Any Web site that requires a form doesn't want a whole bunch of bogus e-mail addresses filling up their database. If they have to deal with a lot of phony addresses, it just takes longer for them to e-mail their information out to all of their customers. That's especially true if they have a huge list of clientele. If the e-mails with the fake addresses aren't able to go through, it holds up the process, wastes disk space and it just takes up too much time.

For example, since you're reading this, you're obviously a subscriber to WorldStart's newsletters. So, let's say we had a major problem with people entering in bogus e-mail addresses on our Web site. We send our newsletters out every single day (more than one newsletter at that) and if we had to wait on all the fake addresses, it would take forever for all of them to go out. Therefore, anyone who entered a correct address would have to wait extra long just to get their newsletters. What a pain, right?!

Now, for the password part of your question. You are required to enter your password twice for security purposes, obviously. Web sites want to know that you aren't trying to scam anything from them and you putting in the same password twice helps them rest at ease. It's also protection for you, because you can be sure your password is correct once you type it out twice. And hey, it gives you another chance to remember what exactly you chose to use as your password!

So, the next time you're filling out a form online, don't feel hassled by having to duplicate your e-mail address and password. Instead, feel safer knowing that Web site is going to protect you! Got it? Good!

MS Office

Organizing the Calendar List in Outlook 2007

Do you use multiple calendars in MS Outlook 2007?

Do you have quite a list of them?

Do you get frustrated as you look through the list, trying to locate the one calendar you need?

You might try to display them all, but let's face it, you can only display so many at one time and still be able to see what's going on.

So, now what?

Well, if your list of calendars is long and "out of order," this might be just the thing you need!

No, we aren't going to combine them or delete any of them. We're going to look at ways to arrange them.

First, you can have Outlook quickly alphabetize them with just a couple clicks.

  • Right click on the "My Calendars" section title.

  • Now, choose Arrange by Name.

Presto! The calendars are in an alphabetical list.

The second way to arrange them is manually. That would allow you to place those you use most often toward the top of the list in an order that makes sense to you.

  • To accomplish a manual move, right click on an actual calendar name.

  • From the menu that pops open, choose either "Move Up in List" or "Move Down in List," depending on which way you want it to go.

  • Keep doing that until everything is in the order you prefer.

Either way, you can still keep separate calendars for different reasons and still make it efficient to switch between them!

You Won't Believe How Fast Your Computer Is!

Make Windows FLY Up To 300% Faster!

It's The Absolute BEST $8.97 You'll Ever Spend On Your PC!

You're Computer Will Be Smokin' Fast!

Customize, Tweak, Secure, Optimize, And Make 'Er Smokin' Fast!!

OK, these are STILL going like crazy! Thank YOU to the 1000+ who have ordered! If you don't have it yet, you;re missing out big time! Just wait till you check out this mind-blowing deal on System Mechanic 7

It's by far, the very best program I've ever seen for getting the most out of Windows! You'll be blown away at what this does to your PC - You'll think you got a new computer! I tell ya, personally, I think this is just outstanding! I've seen a ton of software, but the improvements this makes is really nothing short of amazing! It optimizes Windows to be the way it SHOULD have been when you purchased it! Read on - and get ready to be really - and I mean REALLY - impressed!

First, I'm seriously impressed at just how easy this software makes it to really get your computer crankin'! I mean, I don't think there's anything on your computer this can't tweak and optimize!

To test, I installed it on my personal machine and it did a quick scan, and then it scared the poop outta me! it came up with a serious warning about a few security problems and gave me some really helpful speed improvement suggestions. Now here's the cool part - With just a couple mouse clicks, I'm now enjoying a MUCH faster -and much more secure - computer! And I honestly thought I was as tweaked out as I could be! Not even close - this was incredible - and all automatic!

What can it do for you? Let's talk speed - this takes your slow PC and turns it into a Ferrari - you'll think your computer is new again (maybe better than new)! It'll be just flying through programs and impressing the livin' daylights out of ya! This has a whopping 19 different ways to crank up the speed on your machine! In fact, many systems see an absolutely incredible 300% improvement after just some automatic adjusting by this program! WOW - that's worth $8.97 in anyone's book!

Want to surf the internet at up to 300% faster? Oh, man, this can help! Windows isn't necessarily optimized for the fastest connection out of the box, but this program can grab your settings and squeeze out the speed - you'll surf the internet like crazy! Who wouldn't want to surf up to 300% faster?!!? Heck, it even has a speed tool to measure how faster you connection speed is! Just fantastic!

Want more? - Sure ya do! Another thing this does that I'm in absolute love with is it lets you customize over 100 "secret" Windows settings! Stuff that you always wish Windows would let you adjust but there isn't really any direct way to do it. This makes it point-and-click easy!! You can: Optimize the way Windows' Start Menu behaves, speed up networking performance, log in automatically, edit your computer registration data, change multimedia behavior, improve pagefile security, customize explorer's context menus, edit advanced administration options, and much more!!

Oh, and just wait till you point your mouse at the Automatic System Maintenance section! I just love this! This part of the program will watch in the background and wait till the system is idle. As soon as you're not using the computer, it will work in the background tuning your computer for absolute peak performance! Here's the really cool part - just touch your mouse, and it stops what it's doing and gives the system back to you! Really! If you've ever been slowed down by a stubborn anti-virus that insisted on scanning while you were working, you know just how cool this is! Oh, and it even lets you pick and choose what optimizations to run!

Another automatic feature I think is just brilliant is the "One-Click" option! It's just what it sounds like - just click the button and System Mechanic runs all of its system enhancement programs and cranks your system up to the next level! Just a button push away! It makes it easy for EVERYONE to have a smokin' system!

Of course, no utility suite would be complete without some killer security tools - and this has the best! This program will quickly scan your system and help you find all the holes - then just plug them with a mouse click! I was really surprised when it found not one, not two, but THREE major holes on my personal PC! I clicked the mouse and the world was safe again!

Oh, and that's not all! This also includes both a world-class Anti-Virus (one of the easiest, most comprehensive AVs I've ever used) and a really top-notch Firewall! Either one retails for more than we're selling the entire suite for! WOW!

PLUS - it destroys spyware, adware, malware and more. OK, put it this way - if it was made to attack your system, this is going to seek it out and destroy it like a battalion of ticked off Marines!

OK, all that's great, but what if your PC is really messed up - like it won't boot? This software can handle that too! Just pop in a recovery CD and System Mechanic will examine your system and get your computer running right again! If you've ever had that sick "why isn't my computer booting" feeling, you can appreciate how great this will be next time it happens!

One more thing and I'll try to stop! System Mechanic is just fanatical about grabbing up wasted space on your hard drive! This just blew me away when it found a whopping 1.5 GIG of wasted hard drive space! Geeze - I've had whole hard drives that were smaller than that! This made grabbing that space back a mouse click away! I tell ya - you just can't go wrong here!

OK - can ya tell I'm impressed? There's actually a LOT more this can do, but I don't want to write a book on it (OK, maybe I've already come close)! I'm currently running this software and couldn't be happier with it. My system is definitely faster than before it was installed and I just love the performance increase! If you only buy one software program this year - GRAB THIS!

Your price? Get this - just $8.97 and US shipping is FREE! AND - this is a 3 license pack too! WOW!!! We've never had it this cheap!!! When you think of all this can do, for $8.97, it's the biggest no-brainer in software history! Check it out:

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4052

PS - Seriously, after just using this for a short time, I wouldn't be without it. If WorldStart wasn't carrying it, I'd happily pay the $70 for it somewhere else - it really is that good! PLEASE - take a look at this one, I've NEVER seen a better, more complete utility program! Blows everything else right out of the water!!

PS - The price will increase to $18.97 very soon (probably like, tomorrow)!

Tip of the Day

KeepVid

You’ve all probably wondered how you can download the videos you find on YouTube to your hard drive so that you can use them for other projects, such as PowerPoint presentations or video montages. Or, perhaps you'd like to take them with you to places where you might not have access to the Internet. While there are many ways to do that, most focus on extensions or add ons for the Firefox Web browser. And that may leave you wondering if you can do the same with Internet Explorer. Well, the answer is yes and it’s very simple to do. First, just direct your browser to www.KeepVid.com.

KeepVid is a Web based YouTube downloader that's very easy to use! It can be used anywhere and accessed from any regular Web browser. The homepage looks like this:

You'll see the page title, a text box to enter in a YouTube URL (or Web site address or link of a video), a few advertisements and a Top Videos box.

What you're going to want to focus on is the URL bar at the top of the page.

Now, what you’re going to need is the URL of the YouTube video you want to download. There are a couple of ways to get that. If someone has sent you the link in an e-mail, you already have it. In that case, it looks something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dj298NRTO8.

If you’re watching the video on the YouTube Web site itself, you can find the URL in the address bar of your browser.

Or, you can find it in a little box on the right hand side of the page.

The best way to get the URL is to copy and paste it into KeepVid (highlight the entire URL, right click your mouse, select Copy, move to KeepVid.com, right click in the URL bar and select Paste). Then click on the Download button.

You'll then see this screen:

I have underlined in red your two download options. The first is classified as “Low Quality” and the second is “High Quality.” The low quality video is in the Adobe Flash format and the high quality is an .MP4 (Apple QuickTime format). You can either do as they say underneath each link (right click on the download link, choose Save Target As and download it or just click on the Download button and it will bring you to the File Download dialogue box where you can choose to save the file and rename it to whatever you’d like). I'd recommend renaming it, because the default file name will always be “get_video” or “video.” I think it's always better to choose the higher quality option. The file size isn’t that much larger than the other one, so it won’t take much longer to download. Plus, the QuickTime format is much more versatile.

If you get the QuickTime video, you can just import it into your iTunes or QuickTime software and watch the video whenever you’d like. The QuickTime format is also good for uploading to blogs (as many popular blogging Web sites support that format). The QuickTime player and the iTunes software are always available for free on www.apple.com.

There you have it! You can now get your favorite YouTube videos off the Internet to carry with you wherever you go and with any browser you choose. Enjoy!

Today's Feature

Worm Infects 9 Million Computers

I often find myself saying, "Please keep your computer up to date!" Well, today is another one of those days, but it may be too late for some of you.

As you may or may not recall, back in October 2008, Microsoft released an emergency security patch to protect computers from a worm that could exploit the Windows Server service. That service, while it sounds like it would only be on servers, actually runs on every computer that has Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 2003 Server and 2008 Server.

At the time, many newspapers made a big deal out of the patch, because it was released at a time when Microsoft doesn't usually release patches. Those "out of cycle" updates are generally more important, because Microsoft feels the need to release them immediately, instead of at the beginning of the month.

Well, even though the patch was released to fix a major issue with Windows, many people did not install it. Now, the worm, called "Downadup," has infected over 9 million computers worldwide. The worm works by infecting Web sites, making them hosts for the virus. After a Web site is infected, the site can give the worm to any computer that visits.

At this time, the worm continues to spread like wildfire, so please, please, please update your computer! There are several ways to make sure your computer is up to date. The best way is to open Internet Explorer (not Firefox) and go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. That Web site will scan your system and tell you which updates you need. You should install all of the critical updates.

After you've done your updates, you should also download the Malicious Software Removal Tool. That's a quick tool Microsoft releases monthly to remove known viruses, worms and spyware from Windows computers. To get this month's version of the Malicious Software Removal Tool, go here. Until next time, stay safe out there, my friends!

When it's finished, the page will change. The background color will be the top most complimentary to the image you uploaded. Beneath the image, you’ll find the most dominant color in the image, followed by the top ten unique colors also in the image.

The nice thing is that for Web design, they provide the HTML code you’ll need for the colors they're showing you, making it much easier to put it directly to use right away without having to look it up.

I also like how secure the site is! Your image is deleted after 10 minutes on the server and it's renamed in the process so that you can work on something top secret and get color matches with no worries it’s going to show up somewhere on the Internet without your permission.

All in all, this is a fun Web site to try out. Go see for yourself!

January Wallpaper

Here's January's wallpaper. It's all free, so enjoy!

Yellowstone Falls

This was shot just before sunrise at the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. This amazing falls is always a treat to see and I was early enough, I had the place to myself!

Simple Flower

I don't know about you, but I needed a break from all the snow and ice, so I found this and decided to put a little green into January! Shot last spring in the Smoky Mountains; a Trillium, I think.

Rock and Ice

This abstract looking shot is of thick ice that had formed on some reddish rock in the Smoky Mountains last spring. So, if you want a cold theme for your desktop, this should do it!
