Quick Tips

Reopen That Tab

Listen up all you Firefox users! This tip is just for you. When you're using Firefox, do you often use tabbed browsing? If you don't, you might want to consider starting, especially after you hear what I have for you today. (In case you're not too sure about tabbed browsing, read here for some basic information that will help you get started with using it right away). Then when you're ready, read on!

At some point or another, I'm sure you've probably filled out a form online, right? Or, maybe you're an avid user of message board forums (like WorldStart's, for example). Either way, sometimes when you're doing those kinds of things, you get distracted or you somehow lose what you're working on. So, wouldn't it be great if when that happens, you could somehow get all of that information back with just a clickity click click? Well, there's a way with Firefox. Check it out!

If you accidentally close out a tab you're working in, all you have to do is right click anywhere in the tab area and choose the option of Undo Close Tab. With that one click, the Web page you were working on will magically appear again right before your eyes. It will come back up the same exact way it was when you lost it, with all of your information still intact. I'm not lying. Try it for yourself. You'll be amazed and you'll definitely save yourself a lot of time!

STOP! Don't Fry Your Laptop!

Best Deal EVER On A Laptop Surge Protector!

Just $9.97 Keeps Your Laptop Safe From Surges!

Ingenious In-Line Surge Protector Takes Up Almost No Space

I'm so excited! We just landed an amazing deal on some really clever Targus Laptop Surge Protectors! These handy little surge protectors are EXACTLY what you need to keep your expensive laptop safe and secure while it's plugged into the wall!

I mean, let's face it - none of us would ever consider running a desktop computer without a surge protector, but how many times do you plug your laptop cord into the wall without one?

I don't know about you, but I have a LOT invested in my laptop, software, and all the data on my hard drive. I have music, irreplaceable photos, TONS of data - if I was hit by a surge it would be a mess to clean it all up! I do my backups, but still - who wants their expensive laptop knocked out by a surge?

Yeah, yeah, I know what you're thinking - who the heck wants to lug around a big, bulky surge protector? Hey, I hear ya! Well just wait till you feast your eyes on this one! This is an in-line surge protector!  It plugs in between the main power cord and the adapter (the black box looking thing in the middle of your laptop cord). Just spend 20 seconds installing it and that's it - you never have to think about it again! It's always there, protecting you from surges and not taking up a bit of extra space in your laptop bag! Is that genius or what?!?!

Targus Mobile Surge Protector 2-Prong

This surge protector absolutely great to use when your laptop is at home, but it really shines when you're on the road! I don't know about you, but I'm always worried about plugging my computer into strange hotel plugs - you never know how the wiring is in those places! Next time your neighbor flips on the hair dryer it might trigger a powerful surge that kills your computer!

Oh, and it's not just hotels either - ever plug into a rickety old socket at an airport? Restaurant? Coffee house? Truck stop? Conference room? Yikes! Talk about playing Russian Roulette with your laptop! You'd have to be ridin' the crazy train to plug into one of those sockets without a surge protector!

In addition, this also has Thermal Overload Protection - that means nothing's going to burn up if you're drawing too much juice or plugged into a socket that has too much sustained voltage (it happens).

Plus, for the price it's insane not to pick one up! We're talking just $9.97 and US shipping is FREE! For less than $10, you can plug in anywhere and know your laptop is protected!

Just choose the protector that fits your laptop. If you're laptop brand is not listed, just look at the wall plug. If it's two prong, you need the first one, 3 prong you need the second. It's that simple :-)

For HP, Compaq, Dell, Panasonic, Acer, or any laptop that plugs in with a 3 prong connector:

For IBM, Toshiba, Sony, Gateway, NEC, or any laptop that plugs in with a 2 prong connector:

PLUS, it includes some great software that makes it really easy for you to transfer files from all your various cards (cell phone, PDA, digital camera) to your computer. It's really great for your camera phone images - you can print, save, transfer, and even e-mail them!

To top it all off, this is really small (about the size of a flash drive), uses a lightening-fast USB 2.0 connection, and even includes an extra cable to make it easier to plug into those hard-to-reach ports!

Your cost? Just $10.97 and US shipping is FREE! Can you imagine how much your local wireless store would charge you for this? I don't even want to think about it! If you have any kind of card in your phone or camera, this is a must - especially for that price! Can't go wrong - give it a try!

Computers 101

Q:
In the past, you've told us how to be safe on certain Web sites, etc., but what about chat room safety? Do you have any tips we all can abide by for that?

A:
I'm so glad you asked! We here at WorldStart are always telling you to be as safe as possible when you're visiting the World Wide Web. We've covered the Internet, social networking Web sites and even some Web sites for children, but what about regular ol' chat rooms? Everyday, more and more people are using chat sites and to be honest, chat rooms can make you just as vulnerable as anything else in today's Internet world. So, what can you do to keep yourself safe? Well, give these tips a try!

1.) As much as we may not want it to be true, there are many people online who are very dangerous. If you don't keep your eyes and ears open, you may put yourself at risk. When you're talking to someone in a chat room that you've never talked to before, don't ever, for one second, think you know them. Plain and simple, they are a stranger to you and you should never give them your real name, address, phone number or any other personal information. That goes for your e-mail address as well, especially if it contains part of your name, etc.

2.) Another rule of thumb to follow is to never tell anyone you're chatting with what your daily routine is. If you do the same thing everyday, such as go to work or to school, don't give that information out. Or, if you visit the same places regularly (parks, stores, etc.), don't tell anyone! You don't want to give anyone any leads in knowing where you're going to be during certain times of the day.

3.) It's strongly advised as well that you do not meet anyone in person that you have met off the Internet. We all know it happens on a daily basis, but in this case, we're just talking about you. Don't worry about what other people have done in the past, just worry about yourself and stray away from meeting people in real life that you don't know. If you mix your real life with your computer life, you could be in for a big letdown or an unwelcome surprise.

Now, I know that some of you may not listen to all of that, so just in case you're stubborn, here are some guidelines to follow if you do actually meet someone. Always do it in a public place where other people are around. Tell one of your friends or family members where you're going, what time, etc. If someone else knows, they will be able to look out for you. And better yet, invite someone else to go along with you. Two is better than one!

4.) If you receive Web site links during your chat sessions, it's best not to open them. They could contain viruses or even be of a disturbing matter. Just leave them alone and all will be good.

5.) Try to visit chat rooms you know have moderators. That way, no one will be able to get away with threats, harassment or illegal behavior. I'm not sure about you, but it makes me feel better knowing someone else is there to watch my back if I happen to need them.

6.) It's best not to post any pictures of yourself either. Sometimes the people you chat with may ask you for your picture, but if you give it to them, it's just going to open another can of worms. It will give that person a chance to know more about you. They'll also know what you look like and that's just not good.

7.) I know it's fun and exciting to talk to new people every once in awhile, but it's really best to keep your chat room conversations limited to people you really do know. You know, your family members, your friends, your co-workers, etc. Those are people you know and can trust, so why not just talk to them instead? And besides, we all talk to our friends and family less than we should in the first place, so just set up a chat session with them and stay in touch!

Okay, I think that covers all the main points. I know some of these tips may not apply to all of you, but maybe you could forward them off to other people you know, such as your children or grandchildren. If you share this information with others, it will help to keep everyone you know and love safe. I also know this may be a little repetitive for some of you, but there's nothing like a refresher course. At least that's what I always like to say. Now, go on and be safe!

MS Office

Click, Click: Toolbar Docked

As I'm sure many of you know, in older MS Office Suite programs and any of the 2007 programs that still use menus and toolbars (such as Outlook 2007), you can choose to constantly display a "floating" toolbar by dragging it to the outer edges of the program window.

The toolbar then loses its window title bar and is what we call "docked" on either the top, bottom, left or right of the window.

Well, here's a handy little feature: you open the program and voila! All the toolbars you had docked are still open and waiting for your command.

To dock a toolbar, you can simply click and hold on the toolbar's title bar and then drag it to the desired location, releasing the mouse button when it's placed to your liking.

That's an efficient way to go, but if you're just going to place it at the top with all the other toolbars, there's a slightly faster way!

Next time, try a double click on the title bar.

Poof! The toolbar is instantly docked. No fuss, no muss!

Of course, if you don't like its docked location, you can always click and hold on the vertical bar to the left of the toolbar:

Then just drag it to your preferred location. (The double bars for vertically docked toolbars are located at the top of the toolbar).

It's as easy as that. Click, click and you're docked!

Amazing Surround Sound Form Your Computer!

Have The Ultimate Listening Experience!

You Won't Believe Your Ears!

Amazing Sound Box Will Blow You Away!

Ever want to watch a DVD or TV show on your computer, but absolutely cringe at the thought of how miserable the sound is going to be? It's the digital equivalent of nails on a chalkboard!

Well, do you want to know why it's so horrible? The sound card that comes in your computer is probably a very basic run of the mill sound card, which doesn't even come close to producing great sounding audio. This amazing sound box we have for you today is basically a top-notch USB sound card that allows you to output your audio in high def 7.1 surround sound!

Now you are probably wondering what 7.1 audio is. 7.1 audio gives you an output that supports up to 8 channels of audio. OK, that didn't help, let's try this - 7.1 supports up to 7 speakers AND a subwoofer for the most amazing listening experience you've ever had! A full surround sound system that will rival a movie theater experience! Your ears won't know what hit them!

The most exciting this is you'll be hearing everything the way it is suppose to sound versus that slightly cloudy, fuzzy mess that comes out of your normal computer speakers. Ditch the measly two speaker system- time for the real deal!

Better yet- 7.1 is the most advanced listening technology you can find- it is more advanced than your standard DVD audio! Talk about an amazing listening experience! I have a BluRay system that supports 7.1 surround, and I give you my word - it's absolutely amazing to experience!

How does it work? Well, instead of relying on the three audio connections hidden on the back of your computer, you simply plug this device into a free USB port and sit it on your desk. Now, your computer's audio will run to this little box. Once you have it plugged into your computer, you simply take the included Optical SPDIF cable and plug it into your stereo system, receiver, or other system that supports SPDIF input (note - your stereo system or receiver needs to have a connection for the SPDIF cable most newer devices do - it's sometimes labled "digital optical"). Once hooked up, this will play your digital sound through your stereo speakers giving you amazing, crystal clear perfect sound!

Oh but this is not all it does- nope! This device allows you to control the volume with easy to reach up and down buttons. As an added bonus, this device even comes with a soft mute feature, which allows you to hit the mute button, and instead of completely muting the device, it will quiet down to about the sound of a whisper!

Plus, you can connect two microphones in the nicely available jacks. Never again will you have to go scrambling around on your hands and knees searching for that oh-so-inconvenient microphone jack on the back of your computer!

And the cost of this device is soooo cool too! Just $24.97 and US Shipping is Free! Experience amazing sound- order yours now! Wanna know more about the sound connections? Check out the page below for all the info!

Tip of the Day

Digsby

In today’s day and age, there are so many ways to connect with your family, friends and the entire world! You have e-mail, instant messaging and social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. The only dilemma is having to manage all of those things at the same time. Well, today, I'm going to present a solution to that problem and I'm positive you're going to love it! It's called Digsby and it’s really what I call an all-in-one program. Let’s check it out!

1.) To download the Windows version, just follow this link and then save the installation file.

2.) Next, simply begin the installation procedure. In the third step, you'll be prompted to create a Digsby account. If you choose to use Digsby on multiple computers, all of your settings will be the same.

3.) After the installation process is done, Digsby will open. Go ahead and type in your username and password.

4.) Now, click on Add Accounts. We'll begin with your IM accounts, so select Add IM Account.

You can then choose from popular clients, such as AIM, MSN, Google Talk and many more.

5.) Enter in the username and password you use with the IM program you chose and then click OK.

After that, you'll need to check the box next to your account.

6.) Go ahead and do the same thing for your e-mail and the social networking Web sites you use. Just be sure to check the appropriate boxes when you're done.

After you're finished with everything, click Done and your Digsby list will be nice and neat with all of your accounts in it. It should look something like this:

7.) Now, if you go to the View menu and press Skins, you can see another great feature from Digsby. The skins allow you to control what your buddy list and IM windows will look like.

Just take a look at this!

So, what happens when you set up your e-mail address and Facebook account, you ask? Well, you get automatic notifications and access right from your desktop.

Take a look at Facebook!

There are so many features to be explored in Digsby, so I suggest you get started right away. Have fun!

Today's Feature

Find and Run Robot

Many people out there would say that Windows XP's search feature isn't anything to be desired. And I would have to agree. Also, many people would say it's hard to find a program via your All Programs menu. I would also agree with that statement.

Well, all of those difficulties can be solved with a free download called the Find and Run Robot. Its little box allows you to quickly type what you're looking for and simply click to launch! For example, I installed the Find and Run Robot and then typed in "Windows Update." The Robot found the Windows Update application the moment I stopped typing. I clicked on it and had my system updated immediately!

If you have a lot of stuff on your computer, you should try the Find and Run Robot. It's easy to install and very easy to use. You can download the Find and Run Robot for yourself right here. Enjoy!

Amanda's Coolsite

Capzles

Do you want to remember some historic event in your life? Perhaps the birth of your first child or your trip to Europe or maybe even a concert series you attended. Either way, now you can with Capzles. It's a Web site that allows users to create time capsules using photos, videos and even their own blogs, all for free!

Before you decide to register, I suggest doing two things. The first is to take a moment and watch the video of the guided tour. That will explain how the site works and what all you can do here.

The second thing is to click on the Take a Flying Leap link at the top of the page. That will take you to a random Capzles that you can explore and really experience what a user-made time capsule looks like.

Registration is easy! To get started, click on the Join Now button at the top of the page. Create a username and password and then click on the Go to Final Step button. Now, enter in your name, location, gender, birth date, e-mail address and fill in the code you see. When you're finished, click on the I’m Done, Let Me In button. You can then get started right away!

To start making your time capsule, click on Create. That will take you to the creation interface where you can not only upload your content, but design the capsule itself.

I put one together in roughly 15 minutes and you can see it here if you'd like.

I think this is a great way to store memories of events, places and things you’ve done in your life. So, tell me, what will you put in your time capsule?!

Terms of Use

Personal & Educational Use Only This blog consists mainly of FREE newsletters from computer web gurus that I receive. I thought you might like to see them all in one place than try to discover them on your own. A moderate amount of editing may be done to eliminate unrelated repetitious ads or unnecessary text which bloat the post. However I have given the authors full credit and will not remove their site links because you deserve to see where it comes from and they deserve to get credit for what they have written. Your use of this site is simply for educational purposes. For more computer-related help go to: CPEDLEY.COM for free software, advice and tips on low cost products which are very helpful. If you want to contact the editor, please go CPEDLEY.COM and check the Contact page for email address.
