Computer Tips [ Ingenious Password Trick + Help - My E-mail Is Stuck + Pasting Like Crazy ] 03/02/09

Computer Tipswww.worldstart.com No, this isn't Steve. You can tell because Steve never wears a suit :-)

Quick Tips

Special Keys

Have you ever owned a keyboard that has special function keys? These are small buttons that run along the very top of the keyboard. Different keyboards have different keys, but the most common ones are an e-mail button, a search button, a connect button (for the Internet) and a calculator button. Some even have a sleep mode function, a volume control right on the keyboard itself and multimedia keys.

These extra keys are very nice to have sometimes, because if you want to get into your e-mail or use the calculator, for example, you can just hit that button one time and the program will pop up on your screen. It's like your wish lies right at your fingertips.

If you've already been using the special keys, that's great and you should keep doing so. If you have the buttons, but don't know how to use them, you should refer to the software that came with your keyboard. Look through the manual and there should be instructions on how to configure the buttons so you can start to use them.

Every keyboard is different, so it's hard to tell you how to make these work without skipping over someone, but all the answers should be right there in your manual. Once you get them working, I don't think you'll ever want to stop!

You'll NEVER Touch MS Office Again!

Amazing New Software Blows It Away - For A Tiny FRACTION Of The Price!

Don't Spend Hundreds On MS Office - Try This Instead!

Fast, Quick To Learn, And Takes Easy To Use To The Next Level!

Full Featured - Everything You'd Ever Want And Then Some!

Discover What All The Excitement Is About!!

You know, we've offered some pretty amazing software in the past, but just wait till you see what we have for you today!! When it comes to bang-for-the-buck, our newest title, Office Suite 2008 just blows everything else away! I can't tell ya how absolutely impressed I am with this amazing software! It's a phenomenal MS Office alternative that has EVERY feature you'd ever want or need in an office suite at a price that's almost a give-away!!! PLUS - this is 100% MS Office compatible!

First off, I can tell you that MS Office no longer has a place on my computer - or any new computers that we get for the office! Office Suite 2008 is not just an alternative to MS Office - in my opinion, it's actually a WAAAAYY BETTER alternative! It's easier to use, faster, and just way more user-friendly! Seriously - just wait till you spend your first hour or so with it - you'll wonder why you haven't been using it all along! You won't believe how impressive this software is!

OfficeSuite 2008

In fact, most of the articles you see here in the newsletter were written either with one version or another of this software! Why shell out up to $800 for MS Office when these does everything it does - and then some - for a FRACTION of the price? Heck, I just installed this on my new laptop for an upcoming trip! I can tell you this - once you give this a try, you won't be back to MS Office and their insane prices - EVER!

What do you get? Well, EVERYTHING! This includes an absolutely fantastic word processor, a spreadsheet program on steroids (it just stomps Excel), presentation software that makes PowerPoint all but obsolete, an incredible drawing program (think easy to use TurboCad), an advanced calculating program, and even a souped-up, high-end database! PLUS it can even create PDFs with the push of a button from most applications! WOW! To get even close to that with MS office you'd be looking at a small fortune!

OK, So how close is this to MS Office, really?

Well, I was editing a document with a friend and for first half-hour he thought we were using MS Office. Finally he looked at it a little closer and said, "Hey - what program is this?" I told him about it - and how inexpensive it was - and he was blown away! He couldn't believe that you could get a program like this for less than $15!! In fact, at first he thought I was kidding around. Well, he's got a few on the way for himself now! Why shell out $400 - $800 for MS Office when you can get this for a small fraction of the cost? Check it out:

The 2 of the main components are a top notch Word Processor and a Spreadsheet Program. Both look a LOT like MS Word and MS Excel - in fact, if you just open it up and ignore the title bar, you'd swear that you were using an improved version of MS Office! It's THAT good. Oh, and like I said, this also comes with a phenomenal presentation program, drawing program, database and MORE! Let's look at the main two everyone use though - I just want to give you an idea why this program is sooo great!

The Word Processor is just fantastic! I mean, it really has everything - a spell checker, grammar checker, thesaurus, auto text, tables, password protection, mail merge, easy font selection, auto numbering, etc. Plus, everything is very intuitive - it just seems like things are where you expect them to be and work the way you'd expect them to work. It's like the person who wrote the software actually uses the software! Here's just a taste of what you can create with the word processor:

OfficeSuite 2008

And the mail merge is incredible too!

OfficeSuite 2008

It also has a fantastic built-in HTML editor for web pages that works seamlessly with the word processor. It makes it mind-blowingly simple to create fantastic webpages in a VERY short amount of time! Like this:

OfficeSuite 2008

Oh PLUS ~ You can turn your document into a PDF file with the click of one button ~ this is a terrific feature!!

Oh, and wait till you see the Spreadsheet Program! It looks and functions just like MS Excel! Even the menus are virtually identical - everything you're used to doing in Excel can be done just as quickly here. TONS of built-in formulas, formatting, and functions at your fingertips. Create charts in just a few mouse clicks, filter data easily, send spreadsheets via e-mail, you name it, this can do it! You'll never need Excel again (or wan to use it for that matter)!!

The really cool thing is that all of this is 100% MS Office Compatible. It not only opens MS Office files (.doc, .xls) but can also save in that format! That way, you don't need to have MS Office to create or save MS Office documents. Cool huh?

I tell ya what - I could go on and on about this one - it's really one of the most - if not the most - powerful office suites I've ever had the privilege of using! I'm really excited about having it on my computer and I can't recommend this highly enough! If you need office software, you just gotta give this a try!

Oh, your cost? Glad you asked! Just $12.97 and US shipping is FREE! PLUS - Grab an extra 10% off today with the coupon above! It's almost a give-away for that kind of money - especially when you think that MS Office is $400-$800!! Try it, you'll thank me later :-)

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4950

PS - These always FLY outta here, and this newest version is the best ever! Make sure you zip on over to the site and get yourself a copy before they sell out! It's really amazing that you can get software this powerful for just $12.97! Check it out!

Have A High Definition TV?

It's Not REALLY High Def Unless You're Using An HDMI Cable!

Discover How Incredible Your HDTV Can Really Look!

Other Cables Can't Deliver True High Definition - You MUST Use An HDMI Cable!

And We Have A Gold-Plated Deal For You Today!

Wanna here a sad little story that repeats itself all the time? People go out and buy an amazing new HD TV (Plasma, LCD, DLP ect) and when they plug it in and hook it up, they discover that, much to their dismay, the picture, well, sort of sucks. Why? It's all the in cables!

Unless you are connecting your DVD, Cable Box, Satellite Dish, Bluray, ect to your TV via an HDMI cable, you're just not getting the quality you paid for. Period. Other cables simply can't provide the bandwidth you need to get HD video to your TV at full resoultion. It's a shame to spend hundreds - or thousands - on a top notch TV, only to plug it in with crappy cables.

I can tell you from experience you'll be blown away at what a difference the right cable can make in your picture! I've used 'em all - from the basic yellow/red/white AV cables, to "S" video, then Component Video then to HDMI - and it gets better each time (with HDMI being kind of the hill)! Only problem is, HDMI cables can be crazy expensive at the big box stores - $50, $100, even $200!!

Want an affordable HDMI cable? We have 'em for you! These fantastic HDMI cables are going to upgrade your HD TV's picture instantly! We're talking 24K gold plated connectors, copper braided outer shield, and a design that's going to get you an amazingly clean, crisp picture!

Bottom line: If you've got an HD TV and you're not using an HDMI cable, you're not watching HiDef TV - you're really not.

Want to grab a cable? Well, this 6 foot HDMI cable is just $14.97 and US shipping is FREE! PLUS - Grab an extra 10% off today with the coupon above!

Anyone with an HDTV who's not using a cable is like a guy who won't drive his Ferrari past 25MPH! Grab one today!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4953

PS - Obviously, make sure your TV has HDMI inputs (any current HDTV will) and make sure whatever components you're plugging in do as well (again, any newer equipment will).

Q:
I use Outlook Express and even though my Outbox appears empty, it keeps trying to send a message. What's going on? Please help me!

A:
Back by popular demand!

Isn't that just the worst?! I mean, you know you've sent all of your messages out, but Outlook Express still insists you haven't. How rude! Well, there are a couple of things you can check before you go off and switch e-mail programs. Let's take a look!

The first thing you'll want to check is your Outbox folder. Go in there, click on the View menu and choose Current View. Once you're there, make sure the Show All Messages choice is selected. That ensures you're able to see all of the messages contained in your Outbox folder. If you then see an e-mail message appear, you can send it off normally or even delete it if you want.

The next thing you can check is within the Outbox folder itself. Go to File, Folder, Compact. If nothing happens, your folder is probably okay and you don't need to worry about it any longer. If you happen to get an error message, the Outbox.dbx file may be damaged. There are a couple of possible causes for that.

One could actually be an antivirus program that scans outgoing e-mail. Unknown to some, the e-mail scan isn't really necessary to protect your computer, especially if you have a regular antivirus program running as well. Go ahead and disable any e-mail scans to prevent any other e-mail files from being damaged in the future.

If you do have a damaged Outbox file, the next thing you'll want to do is repair it (obviously!) To do that, you need to know where your store folder is for your e-mails. If you're not sure where yours is, go to Tools, Options and click on the Maintenance tab. Toward the bottom, you'll see the Store Folder button. Click on that and a box will pop up telling you where your store folder is located on your computer. It will also give you a drive letter. Write that down if you think you'll forget. You can change the location at this point if you want to do that as well.

Once you have the information you need, close Outlook Express and open up your store folder. Find the file titled "Outbox.dbx" and delete it. When you open Outlook Express again, a new Outbox folder will automatically be created, so you can continue to use it just like normal. Most times, the problem lies within an unsent message, but it's good to know what you can do if that isn't the case!

MS Office

Paste It Here and Here and Here?

When you're working in MS Excel, do you sometimes find yourself needing to paste the same information into many non-adjacent cells?

Now, I'm sure many of you know you can highlight multiple cells, enter something into one of them and then use Ctrl + Enter to put the same information simultaneously into all of the highlighted cells. Right?

That's a great trick, but what if the information is a long formula that's already typed out somewhere else?

You could use the Ctrl + Enter trick, but that would require you to retype your formula.

You could try to copy and paste into every single cell that needs the information, but what if it's a lot of cells? I don't know about you, but I don't want to do that much pasting!

So, now what?

The answer is found between the copy and the paste. Literally!

The next time you need the same thing pasted into many locations, give this a try:

  • First, highlight and copy the cell containing the information.

At this point, you're ready to paste. Well, sort of!

  • Before you actually complete the paste, highlight all of the cells that need the information. (Use the Ctrl key to simultaneously highlight as many cells as needed).

  • With all of the cells highlighted, complete the paste.

Voila!

All of the cells are filled with only one paste completed. You have to love the efficiency of this one!

Tip of the Day

Vista: No More Sleeping Passwords

Do you have a Windows Vista computer you usually put into sleep mode when you're not using it? If so, you might be a little irritated by the fact that you have to enter in your password every time you wake it up. In most cases, you could just remove or not use a password at all, but if you're using the file sharing feature, a password is required. So, is there anything you can do to get around the issue? Well, of course there is!

In fact, it's very easy to do! Go to Start, Control Panel and select Power Options.

On the left hand side, you'll see a link that says "Require a password on wakeup."

If you still have UAC enabled, you'll see another link that says "Change settings that are currently unavailable." That will unlock the options below.

Now, you can click on the "Don't require a password" button and then hit the Save Changes button.

That’s it. By changing this quick setting, you'll save yourself from a lot of irritation and you can actually enjoy working with Vista once again!

BONUS TIP!

Mouse Battery Power

Here's a quickie for you! In the past, I've talked about waking up sleeping mice. I told you if you leave your wireless mouse alone for more than eight minutes, it will be sleeping when you come back. The reason they go into the sleep mode is to save some battery life, which, of course, is very helpful. Well, there are a couple other things you can do to save the battery life of your wireless mouse as well. Let's check them out!

There's one practice that may not be too practical for everyone, but if you're able, you can always try it. I'm talking about using your mouse as little as possible. If you know several keyboard shortcuts, you should use them! (Or, at least use as many as you can). The less you click your mouse, the more battery life you will save. Of course, that isn't completely necessary, because a mouse is obviously intended to be used, but if you're able to give your mouse a break every once in awhile, it won't hurt a thing!

I know keyboard shortcuts are hard to learn and it's even harder to remember all of them, so another thing you can do is keep your mouse on a white piece of paper or a highly reflective surface while it's resting. That will help conserve some of the battery power as well. Now, go on and give your mouse a break when you can. I promise, it will thank you in the end!

Snowplow Game

This game is perfect for this time of the year! You drive a snowplow through the streets, trying to pick up as many tokens as you can to clear the board in the shortest amount of time.

You’ll find the instructions on the main screen. They cover how to drive the snowplow and what point value is assigned to which token. Once you’re ready to begin, just click on Let’s Plow!

The hardest thing to do is learn how to drive the plow. You need to hold either the forward arrow or the backward arrow while turning, which makes it just a little difficult to steer. It's also super slippery!

You have five minutes to collect 30 snowflakes and every time you hit something, you lose some time. So, it can be very challenging! The best thing I’ve found to do is when you have the movement forward down, don’t try to just go straight. Bounce back and forth between the right and left arrow keys and you’ll have much more success. I got 20 flakes that way, whereas before I figured that out, I think the most I got was six.

When you load this Web site, two windows will pop up. Don’t fret, one will be the main Jokeroo site. Just close out of it and play the game in the other window. I had this happen twice when I loaded it up, but it didn't happen every time, so just be aware of it.

Now, I’m off to see if I can beat level one and head on to level two. How many snow filled levels will you clear? Have fun!
