Quick Tips

Where's That Button?

Back by popular demand! I hope you don't mind, but we're going back to the basics today. It seems like I've been asked this question over and over again for the past couple of weeks, so I figured it would be a good idea to take a step back and explain it to all of you at the same time. We've done a couple tips on this in the past, but today's is going to be a little less complicated. Like I said, we're going back to the basics! So, what's all this about, you ask? Well, the Print Screen button, of course. Keep reading for all the details!

This is the question I've been getting time and time again: "Where is the Print Screen button on my keyboard?" I've had several people tell me they don't even have that button on their keyboard, but I'm willing to bet that's not true. As far as I know, the Print Screen button is pretty universal to all keyboards. You just have to know where to look to find it! The Print Screen button is generally located toward the top of the keyboard on the right hand side. It's usually in the same column as the arrow keys and it's above the section of keys that say Home, End and Del. It's located just to the left of the Scroll Lock key and it will say Prt Scn or something similar. The words Print and Screen are hardly ever printed out completely on a keyboard, so always look for the Prt Scn abbreviation.

Did you find it? It's not as hard when you know where to look, is it?! Now, just in case you missed some of our other tips, you might be wondering what the Print Screen button is for. Well, it's mainly used to make screenshots of images on your computer. You can hit the Print Screen button and it will take an exact snapshot of your monitor screen. It's really pretty cool. You can read this tip for more on making your own screenshots, but all in all, you at least now know where to look for that all inclusive Prt Scn button. Oh yeah!

You've Never Seen A Program THIS Powerful For $8.97!!

Best Program You Can Buy For Your PC!

Imagine Windows Running Up To 300% FASTER!!

You're Computer Will Be Smokin' Fast!

Customize, Tweak, Secure, Optimize, And Make 'Er FLY!!

It's The Absolute BEST $8.97 You'll Ever Spend On Your PC!

Oh WOW!! You've gotta check out this mind-blowing deal on System Mechanic 7 before they're all gone!  It's by far, the very best program I've ever seen for getting the most out of Windows! You'll be blown away at what this does to your PC - You'll think you got a new computer! I tell ya, personally, I think this is just outstanding! I've seen a ton of software, but the improvements this makes is really nothing short of amazing! It optimizes Windows to be the way it SHOULD have been when you purchased it! Read on - and get ready to be really - and I mean REALLY - impressed!

First, I'm seriously impressed at just how easy this software makes it to really get your computer crankin'! I mean, I don't think there's anything on your computer this can't tweak and optimize!

To test, I installed it on my personal machine and it did a quick scan, and then it scared the poop outta me! it came up with a serious warning about a few security problems and gave me some really helpful speed improvement suggestions. Now here's the cool part - With just a couple mouse clicks, I'm now enjoying a MUCH faster -and much more secure - computer! And I honestly thought I was as tweaked out as I could be! Not even close - this was incredible - and all automatic!

What can it do for you? Let's talk speed - this takes your slow PC and turns it into a Ferrari - you'll think your computer is new again (maybe better than new)! It'll be just flying through programs and impressing the livin' daylights out of ya! This has a whopping 19 different ways to crank up the speed on your machine! In fact, many systems see an absolutely incredible 300% improvement after just some automatic adjusting by this program! WOW - that's worth $8.97 in anyone's book!

Want to surf the internet at up to 300% faster? Oh, man, this can help! Windows isn't necessarily optimized for the fastest connection out of the box, but this program can grab your settings and squeeze out the speed - you'll surf the internet like crazy! Who wouldn't want to surf up to 300% faster?!!? Heck, it even has a speed tool to measure how faster you connection speed is! Just fantastic!

Want more? - Sure ya do! Another thing this does that I'm in absolute love with is it lets you customize over 100 "secret" Windows settings! Stuff that you always wish Windows would let you adjust but there isn't really any direct way to do it. This makes it point-and-click easy!! You can: Optimize the way Windows' Start Menu behaves, speed up networking performance, log in automatically, edit your computer registration data, change multimedia behavior, improve pagefile security, customize explorer's context menus, edit advanced administration options, and much more!!

Oh, and just wait till you point your mouse at the Automatic System Maintenance section! I just love this! This part of the program will watch in the background and wait till the system is idle. As soon as you're not using the computer, it will work in the background tuning your computer for absolute peak performance! Here's the really cool part - just touch your mouse, and it stops what it's doing and gives the system back to you! Really! If you've ever been slowed down by a stubborn anti-virus that insisted on scanning while you were working, you know just how cool this is! Oh, and it even lets you pick and choose what optimizations to run!

Another automatic feature I think is just brilliant is the "One-Click" option! It's just what it sounds like - just click the button and System Mechanic runs all of its system enhancement programs and cranks your system up to the next level! Just a button push away! It makes it easy for EVERYONE to have a smokin' system!

Of course, no utility suite would be complete without some killer security tools - and this has the best! This program will quickly scan your system and help you find all the holes - then just plug them with a mouse click! I was really surprised when it found not one, not two, but THREE major holes on my personal PC! I clicked the mouse and the world was safe again!

Oh, and that's not all! This also includes both a world-class Anti-Virus (one of the easiest, most comprehensive AVs I've ever used) and a really top-notch Firewall! Either one retails for more than we're selling the entire suite for! WOW!

PLUS - it destroys spyware, adware, malware and more. OK, put it this way - if it was made to attack your system, this is going to seek it out and destroy it like a battalion of ticked off Marines!

OK, all that's great, but what if your PC is really messed up - like it won't boot? This software can handle that too! Just pop in a recovery CD and System Mechanic will examine your system and get your computer running right again! If you've ever had that sick "why isn't my computer booting" feeling, you can appreciate how great this will be next time it happens!

One more thing and I'll try to stop! System Mechanic is just fanatical about grabbing up wasted space on your hard drive! This just blew me away when it found a whopping 1.5 GIG of wasted hard drive space! Geeze - I've had whole hard drives that were smaller than that! This made grabbing that space back a mouse click away! I tell ya - you just can't go wrong here!

OK - can ya tell I'm impressed? There's actually a LOT more this can do, but I don't want to write a book on it (OK, maybe I've already come close)! I'm currently running this software and couldn't be happier with it. My system is definitely faster than before it was installed and I just love the performance increase! If you only buy one software program this year - GRAB THIS!

Check out these customer testimonials:

Computers 101

Q:
It seems like every computer term has an acronym to go along with it and half the time, I have no idea what it means. Can you help by giving me some examples?

A:
Sure, that's no problem! There are tons of terms that usually only go by certain letters and it can be hard to keep them all straight. There are obviously too many to put into one tip, so below is a list of some of the more common used acronyms, along with their real meanings. Here we go!

ATA - Advanced Technology Attachment

ATM - Asynchronous Transfer Mode

BIOS - Basic Input/Output System

BMP - Bitmap

CD - Compact Disc

CGI - Common Gateway Interface

CPU - Central Processing Unit

DBMS - Database Management System

DLL - Dynamic Link Library

DNS - Domain Name System

DSL - Digital Subscriber Line

DVD - Digital Versatile Disc

FTP - File Transfer Protocol

JPEG - Joint Photographic Experts Group

LAN - Local Area Network

MPEG - Moving Picture Experts Group

P2P - Peer To Peer

POP3 - Post Office Protocol

RGB - Red Green Blue

TCP/IP - Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol

USB - Universal Serial Bus

WiFi - Wireless Fidelity

WWW - World Wide Web

Did you learn something? I sure hope so!

Now, those are obviously just the acronyms and if you're not sure of the operation of each term, you can always do a quick search on our Web site at http://www.worldstart.com/tips/index.php. We've done several articles on some of the terms in the past. Don't you feel smarter already?!

MS Office

Shaping Up

Using MS Office Suite 2007?

If so, do you insert a lot of pictures or clipart?

Ever find yourself looking at a picture, thinking just how perfect it is, only if it were a different shape?

Maybe you've found a great piece of clipart, but it's rectangular shaped, like this:

Instead, you were looking for a corner accent shape, like this:

You really like the picture, but not the shape. So, now what?

Keep looking?

What if none of the pictures you find are actually shaped to fit in a corner? Do you settle for something that's not quite right?

In the end, you would make some sort of choice, but it may not be your first preference.

If you're using Office 2007, maybe you don't have to "settle" for something else after all!

When you insert the picture, you'll automatically have the Picture Tools, Format tab added to the ribbon. And that's where you'll find the solution to your dilemma.

On the right hand side of the Picture Styles section, you'll find a button labeled Picture Shape.

When you click on that button, your AutoShapes choices will appear, but not for drawing purposes.

Instead, if you choose a shape from the palette, you'll find that your picture is changed into the shape you selected.

Office doesn't distort the shape, it simply hides the parts you no longer need.

From there, you can rotate, recolor, brighten, etc. Just like you could with the original.

Given the versatility this gives to your graphics, you can be quite creative, so give it a try. You just might find it becomes one of your favorite tricks for creating truly customized documents and presentations!

    Tip of the Day

    Organizing Your IE 7 Favorites

Another reader asks: Ever since I downloaded Internet Explorer 7, I can't seem to get my favorites organized like I had them before. Can you please help me?

As a matter of fact, I can! I hope that makes you feel a little better already. You know, like someone is giving you a ray of hope when it comes to your Favorites. Okay, so that may be taking things a little too far, but in all actuality, the Favorites feature is very important when it comes to browsing the Web. If you've never added Favorites to your Web browser before, you might want to start now and with Internet Explorer 7's way of doing things, you'll never want to stop!

First of all, let me go over how you can add a Favorite to your list in IE 7. It's pretty similar to IE 6, so I'm sure most of you already know how to do it, but I want to discuss it just in case. When you're visiting a Web site you want to add to your Favorites list, go up to the top of the page and on the left hand side of the screen, you'll see a large yellow plus sign (+). Click on that and choose Add to Favorites. You can then rename the Favorite if you'd like and you can choose where you want it to be stored. There's also the option of making the site available offline. When you have everything set the way you want it, click Add and the site will be added to your list.

IE 7 made the process a little less complicated. Everything is pretty straight forward. It gives you a lot of options when it comes to adding your Favorites as well. Now, let's move on to how you can get those puppies organized!

If you browse the Web quite often, you probably have several items in your Favorites list already. I know I do! Every time I see a site I might want to look at or refer back to at another time, I click the Add button right away. But, after awhile, my list turns into an awful mess and I can never find anything. It all just becomes one long list to scroll through and that just defeats the whole purpose of the Favorites feature in the first place. So, when it comes to your Favorites, organization is key!

To begin, click on the Favorites Center star, which is located right next to the plus sign you clicked on earlier.

A new window will then appear and you'll have three tabs to choose from: Favorites, Feeds and History. Click on the Favorites tab to see a list of the Favorites you already have compiled.

Now, you can do a few things here. The best thing though is probably to create different folders for the different categories of Favorites you have. To do that, click on Create New Folder. You can then drag and drop your Favorites into their rightful folders. For example, if you have several Web sites that deal with sports, make a new folder and title it "Sports." If you like to travel and you have several sites devoted to that, make one and call it "Travel." The options are endless, but once you have all of your sites set in place, you'll be able to find what you're looking for so much faster.

That's my suggestion for you, but there are several other things you can do with the IE 7 Favorites Center. If you need help, ask the Help file in IE 7. That will get you where you want to go. Also, the Favorites Center is very useful and you may want to leave it up on your browser at all times. That way, you can easily access it and you'll save yourself a lot of time. But, of course, that's all up to you!

I hope you can now go and get your Favorites organized and set the way you want them to be. I did it and let me tell you, I couldn't be happier! My Web browsing is just so much more simple now. Go give it a try for yourself. Who knows, you might like it too!

    Selective Printing - Video Tip

When you're printing something (whether it's part of a Web page or even part of WorldStart's newsletter), do you ever just want to print part of it instead of the whole thing? I know I like to do that sometimes, because it saves me paper and printer ink. And besides that, why print the whole document when you only need bits and pieces of it? Well, if you'd like to learn how you can do that, through selective printing, simply click on the link! http://imgsrv.worldstart.com/videotips/index.htm

    Troovi

Would you like to share your photos online in high quality? Well, now you can with Troovi!

This Web site is so easy to use! Just click on the Choose Photos button to get started. That will open your computer's Open menu, so go ahead and select the photo you’d like upload. Free users can upload 15 images at a time, so don’t be shy!

Once you’ve selected all the photos you want to upload, click on the Upload button. Once they're uploaded to the site, a window will come up. The window contains the link you need to see the photos you’ve uploaded. It's very important for you to copy and paste that somewhere to save it. I like to paste the URL into Notepad. The window that popped up also gives you the option to send out your photo collection via e-mail.

When you’re finished filling out the e-mail form to share your photos with all your friends and family, just click on the Finished button. E-mailing it to yourself is another great way of saving your unique link. (Make sure you check your spam folder as well, because that’s where my e-mail ended up).

After you’ve uploaded the initial batch, you can add more photos by clicking on the Add More Photos button. It works the same way as it did the first time you did it. I hope you have fun with Troovi!

    Terms of Use

Personal & Educational Use Only This blog consists mainly of FREE newsletters from computer web gurus that I receive. I thought you might like to see them all in one place than try to discover them on your own. A moderate amount of editing may be done to eliminate unrelated repetitious ads or unnecessary text which bloat the post. However I have given the authors full credit and will not remove their site links because you deserve to see where it comes from and they deserve to get credit for what they have written. Your use of this site is simply for educational purposes. For more computer-related help go to: CPEDLEY.COM for free software, advice and tips on low cost products which are very helpful. If you want to contact the editor, please go CPEDLEY.COM and check the Contact page for email address.
