Computer Tips [ Help Recovering From A Major Crash + Share A Folder Across Your Network + Friday Funnies ] 03/06/09

Computer No, this isn't Steve. You can tell because Steve never wears a suit :-)

Quick Tips

Shared Folders

For today's quick tip, I'm going to start out with a scenario for you. Let's say you have your computer included as part of a workgroup on a network. Now, all along, you have kept your files private and for your own use, but you've come across a situation where you need to start sharing those folders. How do you do that? Well, it's really quite simple!

Once you have your folders in place and you've set up the File and Printer Sharing (your workgroup setup would have taken you through all of that when you first began using it), you can start the sharing process. Find a folder you want to share, right click on it and choose Sharing. You can do that for any folder you want to share. When you're done with that, you'll now be in a complete shared status and you're good to go!

Here are some more tips that might help you with all of this as well: Prepare for a Network, Making Shared Folder Shortcuts and Peer to Peer Networking in Windows. Happy sharing!

P.S. - Don't forget about Daylight Saving Time this weekend. Spring your clocks forward one hour on March 8, 2009!

Hey Everyone! Steve here - We featured these yesterday and they were an amazing hit! A big THANK YOU to the hundreds and hundreds who grabbed a copy! We sold so many we decided to give them another run today! Check this out - one of the very best programs we've ever offered!

OH, WOW!!! The Most Amazing Program We've Ever Offered For $8.97!!

"If You Only Buy One Program This Year - Grab This One!!"

Imagine Windows Running Up To 300% FASTER!!

You're Computer Will Be Smokin' Fast!

Customize, Tweak, Secure, Optimize, And Make 'Er FLY!!

It's The Absolute BEST $8.97 You'll Ever Spend On Your PC!

Oh WOW!! We just got a mind-blowing deal on System Mechanic 7 and it's by far, the very best program I've ever seen for getting the most out of Windows! You'll be blown away at what this does to your PC - You'll think you got a new computer! I tell ya, personally, I think this is just outstanding! I've seen a ton of software, but the improvements this makes is really nothing short of amazing! It optimizes Windows to be the way it SHOULD have been when you purchased it! Read on - and get ready to be really - and I mean REALLY - impressed!

First, I'm seriously impressed at just how easy this software makes it to really get your computer crankin'! I mean, I don't think there's anything on your computer this can't tweak and optimize!

To test, I installed it on my personal machine and it did a quick scan, and then it scared the poop outta me! it came up with a serious warning about a few security problems and gave me some really helpful speed improvement suggestions. Now here's the cool part - With just a couple mouse clicks, I'm now enjoying a MUCH faster -and much more secure - computer! And I honestly thought I was as tweaked out as I could be! Not even close - this was incredible - and all automatic!

What can it do for you? Let's talk speed - this takes your slow PC and turns it into a Ferrari - you'll think your computer is new again (maybe better than new)! It'll be just flying through programs and impressing the livin' daylights out of ya! This has a whopping 19 different ways to crank up the speed on your machine! In fact, many systems see an absolutely incredible 300% improvement after just some automatic adjusting by this program! WOW - that's worth $8.97 in anyone's book!

Want to surf the internet at up to 300% faster? Oh, man, this can help! Windows isn't necessarily optimized for the fastest connection out of the box, but this program can grab your settings and squeeze out the speed - you'll surf the internet like crazy! Who wouldn't want to surf up to 300% faster?!!? Heck, it even has a speed tool to measure how faster you connection speed is! Just fantastic!

Want more? - Sure ya do! Another thing this does that I'm in absolute love with is it lets you customize over 100 "secret" Windows settings! Stuff that you always wish Windows would let you adjust but there isn't really any direct way to do it. This makes it point-and-click easy!! You can: Optimize the way Windows' Start Menu behaves, speed up networking performance, log in automatically, edit your computer registration data, change multimedia behavior, improve pagefile security, customize explorer's context menus, edit advanced administration options, and much more!!

Oh, and just wait till you point your mouse at the Automatic System Maintenance section! I just love this! This part of the program will watch in the background and wait till the system is idle. As soon as you're not using the computer, it will work in the background tuning your computer for absolute peak performance! Here's the really cool part - just touch your mouse, and it stops what it's doing and gives the system back to you! Really! If you've ever been slowed down by a stubborn anti-virus that insisted on scanning while you were working, you know just how cool this is! Oh, and it even lets you pick and choose what optimizations to run!

Another automatic feature I think is just brilliant is the "One-Click" option! It's just what it sounds like - just click the button and System Mechanic runs all of its system enhancement programs and cranks your system up to the next level! Just a button push away! It makes it easy for EVERYONE to have a smokin' system!

Of course, no utility suite would be complete without some killer security tools - and this has the best! This program will quickly scan your system and help you find all the holes - then just plug them with a mouse click! I was really surprised when it found not one, not two, but THREE major holes on my personal PC! I clicked the mouse and the world was safe again!

Oh, and that's not all! This also includes both a world-class Anti-Virus (one of the easiest, most comprehensive AVs I've ever used) and a really top-notch Firewall! Either one retails for more than we're selling the entire suite for! WOW!

PLUS - it destroys spyware, adware, malware and more. OK, put it this way - if it was made to attack your system, this is going to seek it out and destroy it like a battalion of ticked off Marines!

OK, all that's great, but what if your PC is really messed up - like it won't boot? This software can handle that too! Just pop in a recovery CD and System Mechanic will examine your system and get your computer running right again! If you've ever had that sick "why isn't my computer booting" feeling, you can appreciate how great this will be next time it happens!

One more thing and I'll try to stop! System Mechanic is just fanatical about grabbing up wasted space on your hard drive! This just blew me away when it found a whopping 1.5 GIG of wasted hard drive space! Geeze - I've had whole hard drives that were smaller than that! This made grabbing that space back a mouse click away! I tell ya - you just can't go wrong here!

OK - can ya tell I'm impressed? There's actually a LOT more this can do, but I don't want to write a book on it (OK, maybe I've already come close)! I'm currently running this software and couldn't be happier with it. My system is definitely faster than before it was installed and I just love the performance increase! If you only buy one software program this year - GRAB THIS!

Check out these customer testimonials:

Computers 101

Please explain what the Last Known Good Configuration is. I'm not quite understanding it.

That's an excellent question and I'm so glad you asked! Gary (our tech support guy) was telling me about this the other day and we both thought it would be a very good idea to run a tip on it. Then I got this question in my e-mail and I thought, "Perfect!" So, here it goes.

Let me first give you a basic definition of the feature. I think that will really help you begin to understand its concept. The Last Known Good Configuration is basically a copy of a computer's hardware configuration and its driver settings. It's taken from the system's registry readings when a computer has a good, clean boot up. That copy is made for whenever a computer fails to boot up successfully. When that happens, the system's operating system is able to pull up the good copy and perform a successful startup.

The Last Known Good Configuration feature is available for any Windows operating system from NT on. Also, if your computer happens to have some problems during its boot up, Windows will detect that and it will actually add the copy of your last successful boot to your startup menu. That way, you can go and access it from that point and start your boot up correctly again.

This feature is mostly helpful after new drivers or devices are installed on your system. If either of those had an error while the install was in process, you can still go back and get a clean boot. One more thing: Every time your computer boots up correctly, the Last Known Good Configuration record is replaced with the newest one. That way, you have the most recent successful boot for your computer to start with.

Okay, now that all of that is out of the way, are you wondering how you can actually use this on your own computer? I thought you might! For this, I'm going to use an example. Let's say you just installed a new driver on your system. It seems like the installation was done right, but for some reason, your computer will not start up like it usually does. Well, that's exactly when the Last Known Good Configuration comes in handy.

To start your computer using the Last Known Good Configuration your computer has on record, simply start up your computer like normal and when you see the "Please select the operating system to start" message come up, hit the F8 key on your keyboard. Next, the Windows Advanced Options menu will appear and you can use your keyboard's arrow keys to scroll down to the "Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)" option. Once you have it highlighted, press Enter.

Your computer will then boot up successfully and you'll be able to look into what caused the problem in the first place. Now, keep in mind that the Last Known Good Configuration feature does not automatically fix the problems you were having. It will only get your computer started so that you can troubleshoot the rest of the problem on your own. Either way, it's an easy way to combat your computer startup troubles. You can't complain about that, now can you?!

MS Office

The "Smooth" Presentation Quick Move

If you use MS PowerPoint presentations as frequently as I do, you probably find it best to know as many little tricks as possible to make each presentation go smoothly. Am I right?

I'm sure most of you have discovered the tools in the bottom left hand corner of your presentation. You know, the ones you use with the mouse to navigate, draw, etc.

Those are certainly handy gadgets to have, especially if you're trying to jump to a slide somewhere else in your presentation.

I like them just fine, but for moving to another slide, I've never really liked that my audience can see me search through a list of slides to make a jump. It always seems "unpolished" to me.

However, if you know the number of the slide you need to jump to, you don't need to go through the tools. You can avoid the "unpolished" effect they may cause!

To jump to any slide while giving a presentation, simply enter the slide number and then hit the Enter key. (I realize that means you'll need to know the number of the slide you want to go to, but if you have a few key points of interest, those numbers may be easier to remember than what you think).

Yep, that's it!

If you want to go to slide number 26, type in the number 26 and hit Enter.

Now, that's what I call a smooth move!

Need An Easy Way To Get Data Off Your Old Hard Drive?

How About A Really Cool Way To Backup Data?

On Sale Today ONLY 03-06-2009!

Ohh, Keep reading, you're definitely gonna want to check this out ~

WOW - we just came across the handiest little USB Cable Adapter that you're absolutely going to love! Check out these two great uses:

Easily retrieve information from your old hard drive ~
This is super easy, you simply hook the cable to your old hard drive (or even a laptop) and then plug into a USB port on your current computer and "presto" ~ your old drive now shows up as an external hard drive. How simple and easy is that? You can now access any and all the information you have on that drive and save it to your current computer, a flash drive, whatever ~ super simple, anyone can do this!

Turn an internal drive into a convenient external drive for back-ups ~
Do you know what external hard drives are going for compared to internal drives? Well, a 500GB internal drive is about $150.00 and the 500GB external drive is about $279.99 ~ yikes! The main difference is the nice case on the external drive so when it sits on your desk, it looks pretty. I gotta tell you, for a backup drive I don't need it to look pretty ~ I just want it to hold my data and then sit in the desk drawer quietly until I need it again ;-)

Now, this is where this USB Cable Adapter comes in really handy. Again, just hook the adapter up to your "internal" drive (it doesn't have to be inside your computer) and then plug into an existing USB port on your computer. Again, easy-peasy! The drive will show up as an external drive on your computer and you can easily back-up all your files ~ pretty cool, huh? When you're done, you can disconnect and store the drive in a drawer ~ no need to have it taking up desk space! And, you've saved about $130.00 by using an "internal" drive as your backup drive!

If you find yourself in either of these situations, I'm telling you ~ you've got to give this a try. You won't believe how easy this really is ~ even the "non-techies" will be surprised! Oh, yeah ~ almost forgot, TODAY ONLY your cost is just $19.97 and that includes FREE shipping in the US!

This Price will increase to $29.97 tomorrow!!!

Tip of the Day

I was browsing the Internet the other day and I noticed a couple of my favorite blogs were talking about a program called WobZip. I checked it out and was very impressed with it, so I thought I’d share it with you as well!

I sometimes download files in the .7z and .ISO formats. What are those, you ask? Well, they're .zip files, of course! (If you're not quite sure what I'm referring to, you can read all about zip files here). Those two file formats can be hard to open without downloading a whole slew of new programs and I just don’t really want to clog up my hard drive with those unnecessary applications. So, up until now, I’ve just been living without those types of files. But now that I have WobZip, I can download as much as I want. And here’s how you can use it too!

1.) First, head on over to

2.) Make sure you have a compressed file (files ending in .zip, .7z, etc). I searched for "test .zip file" and got this .zip file.

3.) Next, click on Uncompress from a URL.

4.) Copy the URL and then click on WobZip.

5.) The .zip file contained a .doc file as well, so go ahead and click on the file name to download it.

Remember, WobZip works with .rar, .7z, .tar and many other compressed file types. Happy unzipping!

I Like Your Colors

Have you ever run across a Web site that was using a beautiful color scheme? Have you ever wanted to use that same color scheme for your own site? Well, with this site, you can find out which colors they're using!

This is so easy to use! All you need to do is have the URL for the Web site that uses the colors you like. So, if you love the WorldStart color scheme, you would just type our address in to the text box, like this:

Next, click on the Get Colors button. That will start the analysis of the site’s color scheme. It figures out which colors are used and it does it really fast too! Once it's analyzed the colors, it will display them for you.

You’ll notice that it divides the results up by values. The first value it looks for are the gray values. They'll be displayed first. Then you’ll have different categories of Hue Values. WorldStart divides up into four different value groups.

Now, you can see all the different colors, all isolated on one page for you. But what do you do with them? Well, each of the colors displayed have a special code. The codes are what you use in HTML to get the color shown.

This is a great way to find colors for your Web site, so be sure to check it out today!
