Computer Tips [ Critical Update - Coming Soon? + Are You Saving Right? + Amazing Tables + Friday Funnies ] 03/13/2009

Quick Tips

Vista Service Pack 2 on the Horizon

A few tidbits surrounding Microsoft's second service pack for Windows Vista have trickled out on the web. Nothing major has been announced just yet, but here's what we know so far:

First off, SP2 will have the updated Windows Search 4.0, which makes finding files, e-mail and network items quicker and easier. There's also the inclusion of Microsoft's new exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table), or FAT64 file system, which (among other techno-babble) is basically a better way for Vista to read flash drives with compact operating systems like Windows Embedded CE installed on them.

Bluetooth 2.1 is also present in SP2. What's so cool about it? How about no more pairing problems? All you'll have to do is put two BT 2.1 capable devices next to one another and *Zing*, they connect! Now that's the future, and quite honestly how I imagined Bluetooth to work in the first place.

Another “blue” item is on the agenda in the update as well. Those with the hardware who wish to burn data onto Blu-Ray discs will be able to do so natively (meaning without a separate program) in Vista SP2. Let the gigabytes flow freely, people!

Finally, Microsoft's Windows Connect Now feature is being implemented in Vista. This makes setting up a network, wireless or otherwise simpler for the regular user be allowing them to store network configurations on USB flash drives and then bring the device around the network to integrate the settings. I know, I know, XP already has this feature, but hey, these things take time, I guess.

I'll have more on Windows Vista Service Pack 2 in the future, in the meantime prepare yourself and those around you for the coming update! :)

New Special!

4GB Flash Drive Promotion!

WARNING!! - Dirt Cheap Price Can Change At ANY Time!!

Run To The Site For Our Lowest Price Ever On A 4GB Flash Drive

All I can say is WOW! Did we score a deal for you! One of our suppliers gave us an absolutely mind-blowing deal on some 4GB PQI Flash Drives! We've had some fantastic deals on flash drives in the past, but this has got to be the best ever! We're talking a whoppin' 4 GB worth of storage for just $12.97!! These have a retail of $40 - and most big chain stores sell them for that kind of money all day long!

But there is a catch -

The promotion is only for a limited time - and we don't know when it will end! Could be this morning, could be next week. Once our cost goes up, your cost will go up! It's something new they're trying, so we decided to play along! My advice? If you want an amazing, $40 4GB flash drive for $12.97, I'd high-tail it on over to the site as soon as you read this!! Get your orders in at $12.97 while you can!!

We all know flash drives are probably the best invention since the internet, but when you think about you can store on these 4GB drives, it's really somethin'! Think about this - these can hold the same amount of data as not 1, not 3, but 6 - count 'em 6 - CD-ROMS! Heck, we're talking enough storage for 600 12MP images from your digital camera, 1000 MP3s, or 80,000 typical office documents! That's a lot of data!!

PLUS it's small and easy to take along - this thing isn't even as long as your index finger! Oh, and get this - if you buy several (and at this price you probably should), you can actually stack & snap them together! The little hole is also ideal for hooking onto a keychain - a great way to keep your important data with you all the time!

I don't know about you, but I can't live without my flash drives! I've used them for the typical "taking documents to the office" routine, but there's a TON of other uses too! Stick MP3s on 'em and listen to your favorite songs at work. Oh, and have you seen some of the newer car radios? They have USB plugs on 'em so you can take a flash drives loaded with MP3s and play it right in your car! Oh, and this is a really great way to take photos over to show off to family and friends! Just drag & drop your photos to it and plug it into any computer! Seems like I come up with new uses for these things all the time - you gotta grab 'em when the price is low like this - you know you're gonna need one soon!

OH, almost forgot - these are USB 2.0 drives so yeah, they're wicked fast! No sitting around staring at progress bars while you copy!

Again, these are just $12.97 and US Shipping is FREE! For that kind of money, better grab a couple! Please note - this was a special promotion from one of our suppliers and the price on these will increase the second they decide to end the promo! Grab yours ASAP - before the price goes back up!

Oh, and you even get to choose the color!

Red:

Blue:
http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4963

Silver:
http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4964

PS - $12.97 is our best price ever on 4GB flash drives of any kind - and these are some of the best quality available! Don't miss out, as soon as our supplier raises our price, we're rasing the price (and that could even be sometime today)!

YUCK! Your Screens Are Nasty!

Time To Spring Clean Them The Easy Way!

Window Screen Vac Brush

Ingenious Vacuum Attachment Makes It Simple!

You'll Be Done In Minutes Instead Of Hours!

Ohhhhhh, You'll Thank Me For This One :-)

Hey! It's getting nicer out (FINALLY)!! Don't ya just love opening up the windows, looking out side and enjoying the fresh air? Oh, what's that? Your screen are nasty after a long hard winter? Hey, that's OK. Just pull them out, get out the soap and bucket, rinse them off, scrub them down, and repeat for the rest of the afternoon. Yuck :-(

Or you could try this:

We just discovered a cool new product that's going to be your new best friend this spring! It's an awesome attachment that turns your vacuum into a screen cleaning machine!

Just attach this amazing new gizmo, and get ready to suck the crap right off your screens! Just vacuum all the dust and dirt away in a matter of minutes! It's SOOOOOO easy! Why go though all the "soap and water" hassle of screen cleaning each year when there are fantastic little gadgets like this?

Sure, it's still a but chilly here in NW Ohio, but I thought, hey, why not go out in the cold and take one for the team? Took me less than two minutes to do a screen and it's actually a BETTER job than I typically do with a brush and hose! You've just gotta try this! If it used to take you all afternoon to clean your screens, plan on getting them done in less than an hour this year! Heck, you don't even need to remove them!

Your price? After using one, I'd not only pay $50 for one, I'd do it with a stupid grin on my face! Well, YOU get a waaaayyy better deal than that! We have them for just $10.97 and US Shipping is FREE! Stop living in the screen-cleaning stone age and give this a try! You're REALLY gonna thank me for this one! PLUS - you'll get the added enjoyment of making fun of your neighbors who don't have one :-)

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4959

PS - Seriously, you've gotta try this - it's the best $10.97 you'll ever spend on ANY cleaning product! You're gonna LOVE this!!

SanDisk SD Card Blowout!

Don't Pay $40 Somewhere Else!

Grab A 1GB SD Card - Just $6.97!!!

It's Never Been Cheaper To Grab An SD Card!

Work Great In Digital Cameras, MP3 Players, Anything That Uses An SD Card!

ALERT!! - Less Than 100 Available!!

SanDisk Ultra II 1GB SD Memory CardCan you believe this? A 1GB SD Card for $6.97 - and it's from SanDisk no less! No, the staff hasn't taken away my meds, these fantastic quality cards (that will probably outlast your camera) really are just $6.97! I can't take my wife out for lunch at McDonalds for that kind of money!

Now, you gotta grab a few - cuz you know if you don't you'll be out at some family event or once-in-a-lifetime vacation later this summer and WISH you had another card! You'll be saying, "Oh WHY didn't I listen to Steve when he said to grab a couple of those SD cards for $6.97!!"

I mean, think about it. take a stroll down the aisle of your local rip-off chain store and you'll find they like to sell them for $40 or so - well, unless they put them on, ahhem, "sale" for $20 or something. Yeah RIGHT!! You know where to get 'em cheap!

Oh, and they hold just outrageous amounts of stuff too - we're talking around 250 photos from your typical 8MP digital camera! Using it in an MP3 player? You'll probably be able to store around 225-250 songs! That's over 12 HOURS worth of music! WOW!

Plus, they work in everything that can use SD cards - Digital cameras, MP3 players, Digital Camcorders, handheld PCs, heck - even some phones and PDAs!!!

These are FAST too! These are the "Ultra II" cards, so they are quicker than the typical SD card you get from the big box store. Why do you care? The faster the card, the less time you spend looking at the back of the camera while it flashes "Writing card, please wait"! Less write time mean more time taking - not missing - photos!

Again, your cost is a jaw-droppin' $6.97 for these! We don't have a lot of 'em and I know people are going to be ordering these by the handful! Drop on by the site and check it out:

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4960

PS - Again, less than 100 of these available! Don't mess around or everyone else is going to beat ya to 'em!

Computers 101

Q:
What's the difference between Save and Save As?

A:
Fantastic question! Here you go:

When you use the Save command, you save your work under it's current file name. If you've never saved whatever it is you're working on before, then you'll get an opportunity to name it.

When you use Save As, you get a chance to save what you're working on as a new file.

Here's an example. Let's say you're working on a word processing document. It's a new document and you decide to save it. A box comes up that lets you give it a name. Now, let's say you add something to it. If you use the Save command again, it simply saves it with no questions asked under the existing file name.
OK, now let's say you make a modification to the file, but you want to keep the original version as well. This is where you use Save As. When you use the Save As command, it allows you to save your current file as a new file with a new name. Now when you go to open your files, you'll find you have both the original version and the new, Saved As version.

You didn't know computers could be so much fun, did you??

MS Office

Quick Tables Designed by You!

So, if you investigated the tip we ran the other day on Word 2007's Quick Tables then you may have been left with a bit of disappointment if you didn't see a built-in table that would suit your needs.

In that case you may have thought "Good idea, too bad it doesn't help me."

Before you dismiss the idea altogether let's take a look at an additional feature of Quick Tables.

I don't know if you noticed but below the built-in table choices there was the grayed out choice to Save Selection to Quick Tables Gallery.

See it now?

It's through that particular choice that we will be able to make the Quick Tables feature useful to anyone who uses tables in Word 2007.

Interested?

Good - then let's get started.

Obviously, if we're going to save to a gallery then we have to select something to save.

You can either create something new or choose a previously created table in a file.

Once you've got a table in the format you'd want to use again you need to select the table.

The most efficient way is to click the either the Move handle

Or the Resize handle...

...that appears when you move the mouse pointer over the table.

With the entire table selected, go to the Insert tab of the Ribbon, Table button, Quick Tables, Save Selection to Quick Tables Gallery choice. (The choice will be accessible now that you have a table selected.)

The Create New Building Block dialog window will open, already set to save as a table.

All you really need to do is to name it and click OK.

Voila!

Now you'll find your customized table below the built-in portion of the Quick Table list under the heading of General.

That's what I call a feature for everyone!

More Cool Stuff

WOW!! These went like crazy again yesterday! Thank you to the hundreds and hundreds who ordered! You got yourself one amazing deal! Again, this is the absolute best software of its kind! Save yourself a bunch off the $50 retail and TONS off of lawyer fees! Grab 'em before they sell out!!

Quicken Willmaker 2008 Plus!

The Software Everyone Is Dying To Get! (Sorry Couldn't Resist)

The Ultimate Program For Creating Your Own Legal Will, Living Trust - MORE!!

Save Incredible Amounts Of Money On Legal Fees!

Make Your Own Legal Wills, Living Wills, Heath Care Directive, Powers of Attorney, Final Arrangements, and More!

Retails For $50, Amazon Sells It For $34, Barns & Noble And Office Depot Both Sell It For $50!

Your Price - Just $12.97!!! WOW!!

OK, today's title is a little different than our normal fare - but something everyone really needs. It's called Quicken's Willmaker Plus 2008 and it's a great way to make sure your wishes are followed when the time comes. I know, no one wants to think about going to the information superhighway in the sky, but everyone's time does indeed come. We all have a responsibility to make sure our loved ones don't need to go through any more grief than necessary, and this software can really help.

We all know what happens. Getting a lawyer is sometimes way too expensive, so many people are left without any type of will when the inevitable time comes. This software not only covers standard wills, but also has extensive living will documentation. When I was only 30 years old, my wife and I had a will drawn up by a lawyer, and it was a solid $600 just for a basic "who-gets-what" type of will. I can tell you that THIS is the program we use now - so much simpler to update and work with than a lawyer! Besides, makes it easy to take Uncle Ed off your will when he messes up at the family reunion :-)

This software makes creating a legal, binding, will or living will simple and extremely affordable. It includes thousands of document possibilities to suit just about every situation -- but don't worry, it's incredibly user-friendly! You'll have them finished in minutes - really! It's basically a "fill in the blanks" proposition.

Making updates is a snap too. This program is so informative and in a language everyone can understand. It basically takes you through an interview process which makes it really simple to fill out your document. Plus, if you're not sure what any of it means, the software includes an amazing guide, informative glossary, and a host of online resources. It breaks down the legalese into something all of us can understand!

To help show easy it is, here's an example. Let's say you're filling out a "Final Arrangements" document. Before you even get started, it gives you a check list - name, body donation, organ donation, burial details, person to oversee plans. Then, the column to the right tells you the purpose of each of those items. Now you know what you need and why :-)

In addition to living and standard wills, this also includes Power of Attorney documents, a legal glossary if you get stuck, and other critical estate planning forms. Everything you need in one easy to use package!

Let's face it - proper planning is something we all need to take care of for our loved ones. I've personally had a will since I was 30 years old, and it gets updated on a regular basis. To me, it just doesn't make sense not to have everything in place - I can't imagine putting my family through that. Plus, this is from Quicken, so it's not just some off the wall software that some guy wrote in his basement - this is the real deal. Wouldn't surprise me even a little if this was the software lawyers used to create legal wills and documents for their clients!

Your price is fantastic - just $12.97 and US shipping is free. Again, this retails for $50 - and when you consider all it does it's is worth every penny of that price. If you've been putting off making a will or living will, just $12.97 can get you there.

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4955

PS - Estate planning is something we all have to do. It's not a task anyone enjoys, but at this price it's probably the least expensive way you'll ever see to get the job done. Isn't it worth $12.97 to know that your affairs will be in order when the time comes?

Know what you can never have enough of? USB ports! You know how it is - everything you want to plug into your computer requires what? A USB port! It's really easy to run out of those little buggers, ya know? Well, that's where this amazing idea comes in!

We have these really cool, really new 4 Port USB 2.0 Hubs that magically turn 1 USB port into 4! David Copperfiled doesn't have anything on these babies!

Just wait till you try it! The ingenious design makes surprisingly easy to plug in (and yank out) your USB cords! I tried one out at home and was pleasantly surprised at how much more organized all the cords stay - no more rat's nest!

TIP ALERT!! TIP ALERT!!

Oh, do you have a laptop? Ever hook it up to a regular keyboard and mouse? What about a flash drive? An external HD? An MP3 player? Want to make it easier? Just get this hub and plug your accessories into it - Your mouse, keyboard, and whatever else. Now, next time you need to use your laptop, instead of playing musical USB ports with your accessories, just plug this 4 Port USB hub into your laptop! A single plug and you have up to 4 accessories running!

Your price? You'll love this - we have these for just $8.97 and US shipping is FREE! For that kind of money, you'd be nuts to miss out! You know you'll need one of these down the road - why pay $30 for some lame hub from a big box store later? Get this now - you'll love it!

PS - The price WILL increase to $14.97 tomorrow! <Switches to Arnold Schwarzenegger voice> Don't wait - order now! Do It Now! :-)

Zipped Files

If you're in the habit of downloading a lot of programs off the internet, then I'm sure you have run across a few zipped files in your time. At it's most basic, a zipped file acts a lot like a suitcase that keeps all of your files compressed in one place. Of course, you can't wear your clothes (or brush your teeth) without opening the suitcase first, so head on over to the site and read the full tip for more info!

Wrecked Exotics

Do you want to wince today? Have you ever wanted to see a Ferarri torn in twain, a busted Bugatti, or maybe even a mashed up Mercedes? Go to the site and explore all sorts of crushed up cars, filed by make and model, and prepare to shed a tear for beauty that once was!

Tip of the Day

Cleaning a Mouse

So, you're finding delicate control with your mouse to be difficult? All you want to do is nudge the arrow on the screen by a fraction of an inch, but for some reason it keeps on jumping all over the place?

Well, here's a tip that applies to optical mice which emit a red glow and mechanical mice (the older type with a ball in the base). For another tip on how to clean mechanical mice, have a look here).

To begin, turn the mouse on its back (reassure him by tickling his tummy). Look on the underside of your mouse. There will either be four pads (or ‘feet’) in the corners, or a couple of strips running across the top and bottom. If any gray gunk has accumulated on these, scrape it off and use some water (or that other popular cleaning solution – spit) to get them nice and clean.

That gunk (mostly made up of your old skin cells) is sticky and this makes the mouse stick to the mouse mat. Get rid of it and everything will run smoothly once again!

Spending Diary

Have you ever received your paycheck and it seems like the next time you turn around you don’t have any money? For me, it is the little things that add up; like having lunch at school or getting a snack out of the vending machine while I study. Now you can keep track of where all your money goes by keeping track of what you are spending it on.

I fully recommend that you try the demo version of this before you register, that way you’ll have an idea as to whether you’ll even use it. I found it so easy to use that I’m certain I’ll keep using it. So, I signed up after using the demo.

Should you decided to use it, registration is easy! Just click the "Sign Up" tab at the top of the page. This will take you to the form you need to fill out with your name, e-mail address, what type of currency you’re using, and of course you’ll need to create a password.

Going through the registration process will log you into the site. Now you’re ready to start tracking your spending. It will be set on the current day automatically, but just by clicking on the other days in the week you can switch to add a spend for that day.

To add a spend just fill out the spend form. You need to name it, you can also put a category as well, and then enter the amount the spend was. For example here is one of my entries:

Name: Lunch
Category: Food
Value: $5.50

Once you have the form all filled out just click the Add button to add it to your day! You can keep track of what you paid out on bills, errands, lunches, and more.

At the end of the week, or heck even at the end of the month, you might want to track your spending total rather than just the glance you get on the default page. So, click the Reports link at the top of the page, and it will show you a pie graph of your spending. You can view it by: today, yesterday, this week, last week, this month and last month.

I think you’ll be amazed at what a visual impact seeing your spending on a pie graph will do to you. I was eating lunch at school, or snacking out of the vending machine way more than I thought I was. It’s amazing how fast that adds up!
