What's that Key?

We ran an article awhile back that focused on the Print Screen Key, a.k.a. “Prt Scn”. We got a really great response from this, but at the same time I had a lot of folks asking me what the heck “SysReq” was and what it was doing on the same key!

So, what does it all mean? Well, SysReq stands for System Request, which, at one time, was used to get the attention of a mainframe or central computer. Users of older IBM consoles would press the SysReq key to ask the central computer to permit input. Kind of like paging someone, only with a computer instead!

I wouldn't try pressing the SysReq key and expecting anything amazing to happen, although Linux users can configure our mystery key to provide functions for system debugging and crash recovery. Leave it to the Linux users to keep things relevant!

Note: Not all keyboards have a SysReq key, so if you don't, consider yourself modern!

The Worldstart Photo Contest is back!!

Many of our readers who have been with us for awhile remember our Photo Contest! Well, Steve and the geniuses in our programming department decided to resurrect, reformat and reestablish it! We're proud to announce the new and improved version, with a chance to win a $50 Worldstart gift certificate!!

Submissions for each contest will be accepted for the first three weeks of every month, where afterward voting will be open for users to rate each photo. Voting details will be explained before the voting process starts. Voting will run for 3 weeks while accepting new submission for next month's contest.

The winner of the contest will be the photo with the highest rating, chosen from all qualified submissions; not just the top five as in the old photo contest.

A login will be required to submit photos and keep track of voting. The login is the same as used for Personal Cool Sites, not the same one used by the Worldstart store. Making a new login is super easy and can be completed in less than 60 seconds! No extra information needed, just a username and password!!

April's Photo Contest Theme is:
National Park Photos

If you have any pictures of a national park, now is your chance to show the flowers blooming, the trees budding and the beauty of the Earth as nature intended.

http://www.worldstart.com/photo-contest

May's Photo Contest Theme is:
Storms and Weather

We're giving you next month's theme early, so you have a chance to get set up before the Spring showers really start coming down! Please do not submit May's entries early, as they will not be accepted until next month's contest opens.

Here are some guidelines to keep in mind:

- Submission photos must be sharp. Nothing blurry or we'll think our glasses have fogged up!

- Submission must be at least 2 megapixel images, big enough to make the winner's entry into wallpaper!

- Submissions must follow our monthly theme, otherwise they will be rejected.

- Submissions must contain no people.

Here's where you can enter the contest:

Convert 12 Volt DC Power to 110 Volt AC Power

Or "How To Keep the Kids or Grandkids Quiet During A Long Car Ride!!!"

150 Watt Power Inverter

This is a REALLY FANTASTIC 150 Watt Power Inverter. OK, what the heck's an inverter? That's just a fancy, technical term for a device that let's you plug a 110 Volt AC device into your car! You know the plugs I'm talking about- like the ones in your wall over there! In case you haven't noticed, you don't have one of those outlet plugs in your dashboard. But NOW you will! In fact, you'll have TWO!!!

This ALSO has a USB outlet that'll power / charge things like your digital camera or any other USB-Powered handheld device.

Even MORE practical, you'll be able to plug in the kids' PSP game or XBox or any of those "alphabet soup" named games that you may or may not know what they are but probably heard them before! (Now let's see who the hero is cuz "You Got The Power"...Yeah, baby!!!)

And get this: there's also a "pass-through 12-volt outlet" (i.e., cigarette lighter) for charging things like your cell phone, radar detector, GPS, or whatever. Talk about powered up huh? No matter what power needs you have - AC outlet, 12V Cig lighter, or USB - THIS has you covered!

Yes sir...this mighty lil power plant will stay cool and keep crankin' for as long as you're on the road. Just plug into your existing car power out and you're ready to roll!

Sorry to say, we were only able able to get hold of a VERY low number of these. So get one while the gettin's good and the price is cheap!!! Last time I needed one at the last minute, had to run to one of the "Big Box" stores. I think it was around 60 or 70 bucks! (Ouch!!) We got 'em now for just $28.97!!! So get 'em while we got 'em!

See...told you it was AWESOME! This will keep you busy for quite some time, don't ya think?

And what you're going to find is that this is the Easiest and Fastest way to learn these programs!

This course was created by a company called "LEARN2". Now that may not mean much to you...until you realize that this company's training programs have been used by Fortune 500 companies and leading government agencies to train some of their KEY employees for over a decade! Why? Because their system works!

You see, you don't just sit there trying to learn by reading out of a book. (We all know how well THAT usually works - especially trying to learn a computer program. zzzzzzzz) Well, they do something VERY different. Instead, you watch a series of short, but in-depth video presentations, that shows you what to do and how to do it. Each lesson has step-by-step simulations with easy visual and audio instructions.

Learn2 Training Complete: Office 2007 & Windows Vista

The result is this system has proven to increase the rate of retention. In other words, you learn more and you remember what you learn! (How's THAT for a novel concept!)

Oh, and, by the way, this company's training carries the "Microsoft® Approved Courseware" designation. In fact, their training information covers the very same material included in the "MS Certified Specialist" Certification level! So understand...you're running with the very best!

And wait til you see what this course covers. (I think you'll be impressed as we were!)

As you might expect from the title, this program covers the entire suite of Microsoft® Office® programs...ALL of them!

But hang on a second...check this out.

How many times have you tried to learn a program but then the teaching information was for a DIFFERENT version of the program than YOU had? (You know...you've got last year's version, but the program covers the latest version, which (of course) you just don't happen to have!) This program not only has the most current version of MS Office®, but it ALSO has the earlier versions... for each program that makes up MS Office®!

So even if you don't have the latest version of each MS Office® program, you don't need to let that stop you. Learn the version that you have right now. If you decide to upgrade your MS Office® in the future, fine, learn those versions at that time. Or if you really want to increase your job skills, learn all of the programs and become familiar with all of the versions. (Hello, "Super Star" !)

Just so you know, this is T-H-E FULL- BLOWN training course on Microsoft®® Office®®. (There is a "shortened" version of this course that's called, "Learn2 Training Essentials"). This is ain't it. This is, "LEARN2 Training Complete". And there's a reason they called it that.

This program comes with Five!!! (count 'em... FIVE CD-ROMs, each packed with audio and video presentations! And each CD-ROM features in-depth instruction on an Office® program as well as an introduction to Windows® Vista®. There's over 1400 topics covered! The bottom-line: go thru this course, complete the exercises and YOU WILL KNOW Microsoft® Office®.

To give you some idea of the depth covered in these courses, I took some screenshots for you to look at.

Here I opened the section on Microsoft® Access® (the database program). Once inside, you see the Course Menu for Level 1

Learn2-MS_Office1

When you click on one of the modules, you'll see the lessons within that module. (Here you can see the lessons within Module 3.)

Learn2-MS_Office2

Once you click on one of the lessons, you see the presentations within that lesson.

Learn2-MS_Office3

Here's a screenshot of one of the exercises in Access®. As you can see, the training is VERY thorough!

Learn2-MS_Office4

And if you're already familiar with Microsoft® Office® but you'd like to "brush-up" a little or if you'd like to increase your skills in a certain area, no problem. You'll love the way these modules are set up because you can focus on any one specific area you want OR learn any of the programs from the ground up!

Imagine... the pride and feeling of accomplishment you'll feel when you've mastered THE most popular computer programs used today.

So...if you've been putting off learning Microsoft® Office® for whatever reason, now's your chance to succeed and move forward. And to take ALL of the stumbling blocks out of your way. While other sites have retailed this for as much as $49.99, we're going to give you a FANTASTIC price of just $9.97 and US shipping is FREE!

Computers 101

Q:
I heard that floppy drives are being phased out. Is there a way to copy my floppies to cd?

A:
Most new computers don't even come with a floppy drive anymore. Many options for data storage are on the market that have larger capacity than our familiar little disk: CD-R/RW, DVD, Flash Memory, portable hard drives, and USB keys (aka "thumb drives"). While a lot of us still have floppy drives in our computers, now might be a good time to transfer them onto CD or one of the aforementioned data solutions.

Here is the easiest way I found to copy your floppies to CD-R/RW:

1. Create a folder on your desktop (right-click and select New>Folder). Click the folder and hit F2 to rename (give it a name that will remind you what is in the folder).

2. Open the floppy in your drive and hit Ctrl+A to select all. NOTE: Make sure that your folder option view is set to show hidden files, otherwise you might not copy all the files from the floppy. There's a tip on how to Show Hidden Files available here.

image

3. Copy (Ctrl+C) the files then Paste (Ctrl+V) into the folder you created on your desktop. This is also a great time to "prune" any files you don't want to keep - do you REALLY need to keep that book report you wrote in 10th grade? If you create several folders, you could also sort the contents before you burn.

4. Now you are ready to burn your files to CD. In most cases it is as simple as dragging the folders into a frame in your CD burning program. For detailed generic information (kinda sounds like an oxymoron) on CD Burning, head on over to our How to Burn a CD tutorial.

The great thing is that the average floppy holds 1.44 MB of data, while a CD-R can hold 700 MB—that means you can fit about 486 floppies on 1 CD-R!

For XP users: after you select the files you want to transfer (or Ctrl+A), you can click "Copy the selected items" in the left hand column which opens a window where you can select where you want the files to go. From there you can send them to the new folder you created in step 1.

You can also substitute a thumb drive in place of a CD-R, thus bypassing the need for burning altogether! Just copy the files from your floppy and paste into a new folder on your thumb drive!

MS Office

The Quick Signature Switch

Here's a handy little signature feature I just found today in MS Outlook 2007…

If you're like me then you have a few different signatures for your e-mails. Depending upon who is the recipient or what the message is about you may find yourself constantly locating the Signature button on the Home tab of the message's Ribbon to change out a signature for a different one.

But… there's a slightly quicker method… one that requires no locating on any buttons anywhere on the Ribbon.

I just know that you're interested so let me fill you in.

The next time you need a signature change try a right-click on the signature that's currently displayed.

A list will open allowing you to choose which one you want to use from right there within the message.

I can't imagine anything that would be much quicker or simpler than that!

More Cool Stuff

Warning!!!

This Isn't For Everyone.... Only For Those of us

WHO HATE TO CLEAN!!!

Ceiling-Fan-Vac

This is a cleaver little idea you probably wish YOU had thought of! A Ceiling Fan Vacuum Cleaner Attachment!!!

Think about it..Ceiling fans are a real nuisance to clean. .First you have to stand on a ladder (or balance on a chair like some of us "dare devils"...O.K.... "lazy people"). And the problem is that you have to reach HIGH enough to be able to get over the TOP of the fan blades! After all, the top of the blade is where most of the dust congregates, right?. (You can probably tell I've done this once or twice before, which is why I absolutely HATE doing it!)

Anyway, then you have to wipe off the top of the blade and at least half of the dust falls down onto your face and hair. (Believe it or not, there's actually a term for this! It's called, "Dust fallout." )

Well, check this out: We came across this neat little gizmo that's really does make cleaning fans a WHOLE lot easier, faster and a lot less messy!

All you have to do is slip the Ceiling Fan Vac Attachment onto the nozzle or hose of your vacuum cleaner and whoosh! Pretty slick, heh? It has a unique hinge design that allows the vacuum "fingers" to open and close around ceiling fan blades. And since the Ceiling Fan attachment covers both the top and bottom of the fan blade, you save time by cleaning BOTH sides at the same time!

It comes with an easy-to-use universal adapter so it'll fit all major brands of vacuums including:

Eureka, Electrolux. Hoover, Kenmore, Kirby, Panasonic, Royal, Fantom, Shop-Vac, any 1-1/4" vacuum hose.

Not a big deal...UNLESS YOU REALLY HATE TO CLEAN AS MUCH AS I DO!!!

So, scoop one of these up (get it?...that was a cleaning joke!!) You'll be "cleaning up" (there I go again!) at just $12.97!

Today's Feature

postbox logoToday I have found an awesome new email client that just might replace Outlook Express. The program is called PostBox and it combines all of the features you see in most mail clients with some awesome, new and innovative features.

PostBox was easy to download and install. This is a must for me. I downloaded it and opened the file. From there, PostBox handled the rest. It even imported all of my email and settings from Outlook Express so I didn't have to do anything but click "OK".

Like I mentioned before, it has all the regular stuff like most clients. It retrieves and organizes you email, it keeps contacts and allows for easy use of folders. Where it stands apart is in some of the additional features it offers. One of my favorites is the search option. PostBox will index all of your email data so it is easily and quickly searchable. It creates searches for links, contacts, images and attachments. This saves me a ton of time.

Another feature is the todo list. You can mark any email as a ToDo item. This will mark it and put it in a list for easy organization.

And wait till you see the Compose sidebar. This allows for you to quickly compose new, rich emails with content from other messages and search results. This makes writing email fun!

If you are interested in download PostBox or learning more, check out their website here: http://postbox-inc.com/

Enjoy!

Strangest Things in Space

Normally, we take a more serious approach to science. Well, let’s forget that for today as we take a look at the strangest things in space!

Not only can you check out the Top 10 strange things in space, but you can rate them too. On a scale of one to five, one being not strange and five being really strange! Once you rate the level of the strangest, it automatically moves you along to the next image.

Underneath the image, you’ll find a scroll box filled with information about it. I found a lot of these to be very interesting to read. Which was my favorite? Probably the Galactic Cannibalism! The idea of galaxies feeding on other galaxies really got my imagination going. Although, the image of Gravity Waves was also very pretty and interesting to learn about as well.

Now, if you would really like some more serious space information, just click the Home button underneath the text scroll box. Or you can choose to learn about any of the planets, stars, galaxies, etc. just by clicking on them from the same area.

I would highly recommend checking out the Image of the Day and the Amazing Images section. They are both very cool.

Are you ready to journey to the strange side of space?!

Terms of Use

Personal & Educational Use Only This blog consists mainly of FREE newsletters from computer web gurus that I receive. I thought you might like to see them all in one place than try to discover them on your own. A moderate amount of editing may be done to eliminate unrelated repetitious ads or unnecessary text which bloat the post. However I have given the authors full credit and will not remove their site links because you deserve to see where it comes from and they deserve to get credit for what they have written. Your use of this site is simply for educational purposes. For more computer-related help go to: CPEDLEY.COM for free software, advice and tips on low cost products which are very helpful. If you want to contact the editor, please go CPEDLEY.COM and check the Contact page for email address.
