CAPTCHA Tests

Yes, CAPTCHA is rather odd sounding, but it's something we all have to deal with on our computers from time to time. Not sure what it means? Well, allow me to explain! CAPTCHA stands for Completely Automated Public Turing [test to tell] Computers and Humans Apart. It's basically a kind of response test used with computers to determine if a user is human or not.

In other words, when you're on certain Web sites, have you ever had to type in a series of letters and numbers in order to continue on? If so, that's a CAPTCHA test! The code is sometimes distorted or it will have a design behind it that makes it a little harder to read. It's something like this: . CAPTCHA tests are usually used on sites that allow you to do your shopping online. Even sites like MySpace and Ticketmaster, among others, use them a lot too.

Now, I know what you're probably thinking. Yes, CAPTCHA tests are sometimes hard to solve, but they are there for our own good. They are mainly used for security, especially on Web sites that require you to enter in your personal information. See, sometimes hackers use what are called bots to attack users. The bots are generated by computers and in reality, computers are unable to solve the CAPTCHA tests. Only humans can type in the right code and continue on, so that really helps in keeping you safe. So, while it's true that these tests can be quite a nuisance, I always feel better when I see them. I know I'm in good hands when I do. I'm sure you'll think differently about them now too!

The BEST Wireless Headphones We've EVER Tested...PERIOD!!!

Every Once In a While, Something Comes Along That Just Stands Out from the crowd. Because It's THAT Good. Well, This Is One of Those Times And This Is One of Those Items. These Are Just In A League All Of Their Own!!!

Wireless Headphones

Oh, MY!! Wait Till You Hear How Amazing These Sound!!!

If You've Ever Dreamed Of Owning A Set Of Wireless Headphones...

NOW's The Time! Amazing Price Too!!!

Over the years we've tested a lot of wireless headphones, and all I can say is that these are so VASTLY superior to ANY others we've tried, that it isn't even close! If you think I'm excited about these, you're absolutely right! Let me tell you why...

Imagine sitting out back relaxing on your patio in a lawn chair, listening to your favorite songs playing on the stereo (that's inside the house!). You can even get up and walk around and still be listening to your music, all in total comfort and style! Turn on your music and sit outside late at night and you don't have to worry about disturbing the neighbors!

Oh, and these aren't your average wireless headphones either! They are a kind of 4-in-1 deal - These Can Be Any Of The Following At The Flip Of A Switch!

Wireless Headphones (works with any MP3 player, iPod, stereo, even most TVs!!)

FM Radio (built into the headphones)

Wireless Internet Chat Microphone (the base has a mic built in!!!)

Wireless Monitoring (set the base in another room and listen with the built-in mic)

Listen In Private While You Listen In Comfort

These have sooooo many uses! Just imagine - you could be mowing the lawn while listening to your favorite FM radio station...maybe catching the ball game! If you get restless late at night and can't sleep and want to jump on the computer and listen to some videos on the Internet or even watch TV...no problem! These wireless headphones will give you incredible sound all without disturbing anyone around you! You can even get up and go to the fridge to grab a snack and you don't even need to take off your headphones! (Ahhh...the freedom to roam without being tied down to the computer or stereo by a cord!)

Wireless HeadphonesWhen you take these out of the box you're gonna be amazed! They even look rich! The earpieces have a soft, "cushy" feel to them. Even the band that rests on the top of your head is covered by the same soft, luxurious, padded covering! Before I even plugged them in, I had to try them on to see how they felt and Ohhh...these are SO incredibly comfortable! And they're amazingly lightweight...I couldn't believe it!  You can walk around with these on all day and never get tired of them!

And as far as the sound goes, these headphones are AWESOME!!! When you turn these on, oh my goodness...you're NOT gonna believe what you hear! They sound as rich as they feel! And the volume is strong...you can really crank these up if you want to with the volume control right on the earmuff! No "tinny", thin sound here! These have a strong, robust sound that just surrounds you in music! But that's not all..

How would you like to turn on your computer and have a "wireless" chat on the Internet while you surf the Web? Well you definitely can because this is the perfect audio chat tool! All you do is plug one end of the cable (that's included!) into the microphone jack of the emitter and the other end into the microphone jack of your computer and now you can listen and chat, with the comfort of your wireless headphones! (The "emitter" that comes along the the headphones serves as the "control center" and also houses a microphone that you can use right along with your headphones!)

Hi-Fidelity, Multimedia Entertainment

Oh and by the way, you can use these wireless headphones with just about ANY audio device - an mp3 player, CD or DVD player, your computer, game player, radio even your TV! You don't need a separate set of headphones to work with each piece of audio equipment...this does it all!!! In comfort, style and the convenience of being wireless!!! Oh my!!! THIS is gonna be huge! In fact, I predict, no...I know this will be one of our best, all time selling products...I kid you not!!! And at the price that we're letting these go, it's easy to understand why!

Wireless Headphones

When I first saw these, I thought these were $70-80 headphones...easy! I mean these are "high sensitivity", interference resistant with a strong signal output and outstanding performance. Well, I have to be honest with you. We fell into a super, unbelievable deal with one of our suppliers. And rather than charge what these should really go for, we thought we'd pass along the huge savings. And who knows...maybe you'll think it's so good that you'll want to send this page to a friend! So, are you ready for this? Today as a special promotion we're letting these go for only $26.97 and U.S. shipping is FREE!!! http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=5065

I know...you think we're nuts! Well, probably... but why not? We got a great deal so we want to make sure that EVERYONE and I mean EVERYONE gets a set of these headphones cuz they can be used in so many different ways for so many different things. And the SOUND and the way they FEEL!!! Well, all I can say is I think this is one of the best buys ANYONE can make! So grab one of these right now!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=5065

P.S. If it's any indication, it's still the middle of Spring but I'm grabbing a few of these for Christmas presents! (Heck, even I know a great deal when I see one!)

Computers 101

Q:
What's an easy way to lock my desktop?

A:
If you want to lock your desktop (that is, take it back to its original start up mode, where you must enter your password or click to enter), there's an easy way to create an icon just for that.

Do the following to avoid using any other key combinations in the future:

Begin by right-clicking an empty spot on your desktop, point to New and click Shortcut.

In the Create Shortcut dialog box, type the following in the “Type the location of the item” text box:

rundll32 user32.dll,LockWorkStation” (remove the quotes when typing)

Click Next.

In the “Type a name for this shortcut” text box, type “Lock” (or whatever you'd like to name it) and click Finish.

Now, your desktop will be locked whenever you double click on the new icon you just created!

Retractable USB Extension Cable Is Going To Make Your Life Easier!

No More Cable Tangles!

No More Drawers Full Of Knotted Wire!

PLUS - I Even Have A Cool Trick You Can Do With It!!

If you use USB devices, you've GOT to check this one out! We just snagged a deal on some amazing USB RETRACTABLE Extension cords!!

OK, these work like and USB extension cord - plug one end into the computer, the other into the cord for your device - pretty simple. Now, the cool thing with THIS cord is the retractable part! Once it's done with its extension cord duties for the day, just retract the cord back inside! No messy tangled, knotted up cords in your desk drawer or laptop case! Finally, huh?

PLUS - these are the perfect length! At about 2 1/2 foot long, they give you the extra reach that seems to be required with each and every new USB device you plug in! These would be a great to use with a laptop or desktop - just extend to the length you need, and leave the rest coiled - the excess cable mess is finally GONE! Finished? Just drop it into a desk drawer or back into your laptop case - hardly takes up any space at all when it's retracted!

These are fantastic for all kinds of USB extension cord duties! Mice, keyboard, external HDs - you name it! Just pull it out and plug in when you need a little more cord!

TRICK ALERT!!!

One thing that's really handy is to have this plugged into your computer, retracted, and just kind of "standing by". When you have a flash drive, external HD, card reader, etc that you want to plug in real quick, just extract the cord to your work area, plug in, and you're good to go! Finished? Just retract and it's sitting there - plugged in and ready to go - the next time you need it!

MS Office

Flag It Super-Fast!

When using Outlook 2007 do you frequently flag messages?

If so, would you like a one-key way to flag them?

If you're thinking that this might be a good idea then here's what you need to know.

First, select the message(s) to be flagged. (Yes, it works with multiple messages highlighted as well as it does for a single message.)

Now hit the Insert key.

Voila! Message(s) flagged.

Yep - that really is all it takes - just the Insert key.

And, as an added bonus… if you have the To-Do Bar open the flagged message will appear in the Task list automatically, making it really difficult to forget about it.

I also found that if I used the Insert key again the message would stay flagged but would be removed from my Task list.

One key tricks - there's nothing faster.

Tip of the Day

The Best Practices for Writing on the Web

Are you an aspiring web designer? Plan on penning your own blog sometime in the future? Let these handy web writing tips be your guide!

Enable People to Scan Through Writing

People scan through web pages hunting for specific information or anything that intrigues them. This reading style is very different to the reading style of a person enjoying a novel. However, there is one similarity and that is both types of communication media require you to write to your audience. And, that’s where the similarities end.

Audience Analysis

An output of the Requirements Gathering phase should be a document that mentions the profile of the audience. Use this analysis to determine the writing style. If the website caters to multiple audience, then each section would have its own audience analysis and hence a unique writing style. The audience analysis will also help you determine the acceptable jargon and abbreviations. If you do intend to use “unknown” abbreviations, then here is how it is done.

Keep It Short and Simple (KISS)

If you can communicate an idea in fewer words then do so! Why make your audience read more. Web writing always needs to be clear and concise. Avoid using complex sentence structures, long words, and slang. Your writing should always be in active voice. The KISS principle can be expanded further beyond sentence structures to paragraphs.

One Idea, One Paragraph

Communicating multiple ideas in a paragraph makes it harder for the reader to comprehend. The millisecond break between paragraphs enables readers to digest the ideas being communicated. In addition, if the paragraph is too long, the reader might just skip it altogether and return to scanning mode. Therefore, limit the length of paragraphs to six sentences (Spyridakis, 2000) and you’ll dramatically increase readability and improve retention.

This theory is also applicable to lists...

Seven Items or Less, One List

Lists enable fast reading and improved retention. However, if they are too long they might not serve the purpose. The longer the list; the lower the retention. Limit the list size to a maximum of seven items (Miller, 1958). You can reduce the list by chunking the items into categories. This is also true for writing instructions. This enables higher retention and faster reading.

Now, I know you must be wondering, “But, web users scan!”

Scanning First, Read Second

The way you write should enable people to scan and get intrigued to read. To increase the probability of getting a person to read the content, you should write the content in a manner that enables scanning.
All the practices described in this article enable a reader to scan and find relevance in the content faster. Other techniques include using descriptive paragraph headings and highlighting keywords by using emboldened text. Scan back and you’ll see each paragraph starts with a descriptive heading and each paragraph also has bolded text. These are some practices that enable the rolling stone to pause just a little longer.

Special Note From Steve - WOW! These went like crazy yesterday! THANK YOU to the hundreds who ordered - you're gonna LOVE it! If you missed out, yesterday, you really need to take my personal recommendation for this one and give it a go! I already took 3 home - one for each TV! It flips open for total control, but what I love is that when it's flipped closed, you get your basic volume and channel control buttons on the outside - easy to get at and uncluttered! Check this out, one of the very best ideas I've seen in a long time! A similar device even won an award for innovation from CES, so I'm not the only one who thinks it's a great invention!

It's NOT A Phone! It's A BRILLIANT Idea!!

It's An Ingenious Remote Control You're Gonna LOVE!

Finally! No More Tables Full Of Remotes!!!

PLUS- Flip It Closed And...

Simple Channel & Volume Buttons Are On The Outside!

Control ALL Your Devices From ONE Remote!

FLip Remote

At Last! The Solution To "Remote Control Madness"!!!

If you like EASY, you're gonna love this remote!! First of all, this single remote will control up to FOUR different devices at once! Including TV VCR DVD, Cable Satellite or TV/DVD Combo unit!

Just imagine...no more having to deal with 2, 3 or 3 or even 4 remotes! No more having to search and try to find the remote to the TV and then the one for the Cable/Satellite, and then the one for the VCR, and then one for the DVD player even! This one remote will replace all of those!

Here's another thing you're gonna love: this is Easy to Program!

The problem with most remote controls is they're hard to programming, right? Well this remote has a really cool feature that allows the remote to automatically "discover" devices connected to your system!

PLUS, this is compatible with most major brand-name TV and audio/video components!

Why The Heck Does It Look Like A Flip Phone?????

Yeah, you've probably noticed that this remote looks just like a "Flip" phone! Well, there's actually an absolutely ingenious reason for that!

Let's say you're watching TV. If you're like me, the buttons you use the most are the ones that change the channel and volume. With most remotes, you have to hunt and search for those buttons among a zillion the other ones! With this "Flip" remote, just close it shut and you've got a clean and uncluttered look with only the buttons you use the most on top! No more having to hunt and search, no more accidently pressing the wrong buttons! When it's closed, it even fits into your pocket! How's that for convenience?

Sentry 4-in-1 FLIP Universal TV Remote

Oh, and get this - it even features a sleep timer so you can set the TV to automatically turn off! Now THAT's what I call relaxing!!!

Grab one of these, "ditch" your other remotes and make your entertainment time a whole lot less stressful and a lot more fun!! You can pick up today for just $12.97 and U.S. shipping is FREE!!!

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=5063

P.S. - You know...if you're like me and you've got more than one TV, you might want to snag one of these for each end of the house while they're at such a great deal!

Monthly Wallpaper

I promised you I would be back, and here I am! Hopefully you’ve been checking on your Facebook account; adding photos, and adding friends. As you confirm more and more friends on Facebook, you will begin to notice your news feed will fill in. You’re news feed lets you see what you’re friends are up to; what they’re saying, if they're posting pictures, etc. Here’s an example of what a news feed might look like:

1.I’m sure you’ve checked out a friend's profile. You can see that they all have a basic template. This is the great part about Facebook versus Myspace. Everything is neat and in order, easy to use, but you still have the ability to personalize. In the middle of a Facebook profile is the Wall. A person’s wall is how you communicate with them.

As you can see, here you can write something, post a link, photo, web cam video, give a gift, draw a picture or post a song! Once posted, it can be viewed by all who visit your friend’s profile.

2.If you want to send something more private, Facebook also contains it's own little email application. You can send a message or a video to one of your friends, a Facebook member who you are not friends with, or even just a regular email.

This can come in handy when you meet someone new, as you don’t necessarily have to give them your email address, just your name. They can look you up on Facebook, and you can communicate there. Nifty, huh?

3.The status update box allows you to let your friend’s know what you are up to at the moment. You can enter whatever you like, such as your plans for the day or a inspiring quote.

If you click the Status Update tab, you can see all of your friend’s recent Status Updates.

4.When you are surfing through your friends photo’s and would like to write something, just scroll down and it’s as simple as that.

5.Finally, the last thing I want to show you today is a feature recently added to Facebook, called Facebook Chat. It’s an instant messaging client right within Facebook. If you click on the Online Friends button, a list of your friends currently signed in appears.

Click on of their names and you will initiate an IM window.

6.If you press the button on the right, followed by Pop-Out Chat. Then you can have your own separate IM window, with the friend list in a pane.

The wonder of Facebook is that this is all accessible from adding a friend with one click. There’s no need to keep separate email address and instant message names. Facebook is all you need! I’ll catch you Thursday for our last installment in the Facebook series!

Today's Feature

MemInfo

I like nothing better than a useful program that doesn't get in your way. Good thing the free download that I have for you today is exactly that. This program is called meminfo; it's simple, as well as incredibly useful.

Have you ever noticed that throughout the day, you computer tends to get slower and slower? This type of problem is usually caused by what's called “memory leakage”. A memory leak is what happens when a program uses your memory for temporary storage, but doesn't clear it out when its done. When this happens, the memory can't be used by other programs that need it and all of a sudden your computer is just crawling!

Being able to keep an eye on your memory usage can help to find programs that are memory hogs. You can then simply close and re-open the program to free up the memory and get your computer back to normal.

"How do I keep track of my memory?" you ask? Well, that's what Meminfo will do for you. Here is what it looks like:

meminfo screen shot

You see the little "65" on that picture above? That is my current memory usage percentage. 65% of my system memory is in use. Now, your number might vary, but what is important to watch is whether this number steadily climbs and doesnt go back down when closing programs. For instance, if you open Internet explorer you will see that this number will go up. If you use IE all day and that number gets higher and higher but never goes down, you might want to close IE and re-open. it will clear the memory it was using.

I hope this little programs works for you as well as it works for me. I really like it's simplicity. If you would like to download meminfo, you can get it here: http://download.cnet.com/MemInfo/3000-2248_4-67969.html

One quick note: When you first install this program, it will not show the percentage like mine does, but its easy to change. Right click on the icon by the clock and choose settings. Change the settings to look like this:

mem info settings screen shot

Now your Meminfo box will look just like mine. Feel free to change these settings for whatever works best for you.

Enjoy!

Tartan Maker

I thought this was a fun little site, and couldn’t wait to share it with you. The application is super easy to use too! There are four slider bars, three color squares, and two styles of orientation.

I like to start off with the color squares. Click the color square next to each band slider and select the color you want that band of color to be. The square opens up into a color chart – so you can really customize the shades of the colors in your tartan.

Next, I like to move the sliders for the band size. Once you have all three sized, you’ll need to select the orientation (the direction) of the tartan’s pattern. All you have left to do now is decide what size yarn you want it to have. Switching up the sizes of the different slider bars can drastically change you design.

Once you’ve got everything set up the way you want it, click the words Make It on the example tartan. This will make a tartan with your settings. You can display it tiled like the example, or you can choose to go full screen. Going full screen is a great way to make a plaid background for website, or to get an idea of how your pattern would look as a background.

When you’re done designing, and have a finished product you like, click the Download button to save it to your computer.

I can think of lots of uses for this application. You could use it just for fun, or to try color combinations. Or you could even use it to make background for web page, icons, or even stationary. If you picked out funky fresh colors you could easily make neat stationary for a teenage girl!

I used lime green, hot pink, and black for the background on business-y cards for my sister. Basically they have all her personal information: name, e-mail address, contact information, et cetera that she’d need to give out to her friends, or clients.

What are you waiting for? Go make some nifty tartans!

Here's this month's free calendar wallpaper! As always, it's 100% free, so head on over and grab one!

Pink Flower

This was actually in my front of my house! It had rained the night before, and this pink flower (lily?) was looking especially pink.

Mossy Stream

This just has to make you think "Spring"! Taken last April in the Smokys - and man that water was cold!

Valley Of Fire Road

Just about an hour's drive from Las Vegas is this amazing place! It really does look like that when you round the top of the hill! You think you're on another planet (and may sci-fi movies were shot there, including Star Trek Generations)

Here's April's wallpaper. It's all free, so enjoy!

Personal & Educational Use Only This blog consists mainly of FREE newsletters from computer web gurus that I receive. I thought you might like to see them all in one place than try to discover them on your own. A moderate amount of editing may be done to eliminate unrelated repetitious ads or unnecessary text which bloat the post. However I have given the authors full credit and will not remove their site links because you deserve to see where it comes from and they deserve to get credit for what they have written. Your use of this site is simply for educational purposes. For more computer-related help go to: CPEDLEY.COM for free software, advice and tips on low cost products which are very helpful.
