Computer Tips [ Fix CD Scratches + Cool Trick Makes Mousing Easier + Automatic Folders + E-mail Help ] 01/19/09

Computer Tipswww.worldstart.com No, this isn't Steve. You can tell because Steve never wears a suit :-)

Quick Tips

Fix Those CD Scratches

If you have a large CD (or DVD) collection, I'm willing to bet that at least one of them is scratched at this very moment as we speak. You may not know it (because I'm sure you don't have time to take each CD out and look at it everyday to make sure it's not scratched), but it does happen from time to time. Yes, CDs are very durable, but it's also hard to prevent it sometimes.

So, you're probably wondering now if there's a way that you can easily fix those scratches, right? Well, of course there is! (If there wasn't, I wouldn't be doing this tip!) Now, there are special CD repair kits available, but before you go out and buy something, try fixing it yourself first. The number one best thing to try is a good cleaning. You can run warm water or rubbing alcohol over the CD to clean it. When you're done, just shake the excess liquid off and be sure to let the CD air dry.

If that doesn't work, you may want to try polishing the CD. Polishing can sometimes repair a scratch by making it more shallow. The best thing to use is, believe it or not, toothpaste (especially toothpaste with baking soda). Just apply a small amount to a piece of cloth and gently polish the whole CD. You can then rinse the disc with warm water and let it dry. Another common fix is to just burn a copy of the CD to make a brand new one. Your software may be able to read the CD well enough to make a good copy. Whatever you do to fix your scratched CDs, you now know that you have a lot of options and if you ask me, options are good!

BONUS Tip!!

Get Some Yahoo! Help

Are you having trouble with your Yahoo! e-mail account? Maybe you're having a problem reading your messages or perhaps you can't send an e-mail out. Whatever it is, I'm sure it's interfering with your e-mail time and we just can't have that! So, if you've run out of other options in seeking help, allow me to give you the best one of all: Ask Yahoo!

Yes, that's right, you can actually ask the Yahoo! team to help you with your e-mail troubles. To do that, log in to your Yahoo! e-mail account and in the very top right hand corner, click on the Help link. Next, scroll down and click on the Contact Us link. Once you get to that page, there are three options you can choose from to receive help. You can either view the help pages, contact their customer support or ask other Yahoo! users. I suggest clicking on the second one (Contact Customer Care - reply needed), because you can get help from a Yahoo! expert directly.

So, go ahead and click on that link. From there, click on the link that describes your e-mail problem the best. There's basic help, assistance with mail errors and problems and there's mail abuse help. The most common would be the second choice, so go ahead and click on the Yahoo! Mail Errors and Problems Form link. You then need to fill in the form provided so that they can pinpoint what might be causing your e-mail problem. When you're done, click on the Send button and it will be sent to Yahoo! Since you requested a reply, you should hear back from someone within a day or two. Just be patient though, because they do get a lot of questions everyday and it takes time to wade through them all. But when they do get back with you, you should be able to solve your e-mail mystery and be on your way!

Computers 101

Q:
I feel like I use my mouse too often and I was just wondering if there was an easy way I could cut back. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks for all your help!

A:
I know exactly what you mean! I often feel like I use my mouse too often too. It just becomes so redundant going back and forth between my keyboard and mouse. By the end of the day, my poor little arm is tired out! I'm sure you and I aren't the only ones who feel that way either. So, if you feel like you use your mouse too much, keep reading for a simple cure. I promise you're going to love this one!

Now, before I go any further, I want to make it perfectly clear that I'm not trying to push keyboard shortcuts on you, because I know those can be hard to learn and remember. I'm talking about all the times you use your mouse for the most common tasks on your computer. For example, any time you change a setting on your PC, you have to press OK for it to take effect, right? Isn't it a little repetitive to have to press that button every single time? Wouldn't it be nice if your mouse would automatically do it for you?

Well, it's possible and here's how! You just have to enable the "snap to" feature for your mouse. To do so, go to Start, Control Panel and click on the Printers and Other Hardware link. Choose the Mouse link and then click on the Pointer Options tab. The second choice there is Snap To. Checkmark that box and click OK.

So, from now on, your mouse pointer will automatically move to the default button in any dialogue box. Every time you're doing something on your computer, the mouse pointer will take care of the finishing touches for you and you won't have to worry about moving your hand back over to your mouse. This feature also helps to eliminate wrist injuries, such as carpal tunnel, because you don't have to use your mouse quite so much. And let's be honest, who can argue with that?!

Now, go on and snap to it, my friends!

MS Office

Making the To-Do Bar Yours

I don't know about you, but I really like the To-Do Bar in MS Outlook 2007 (it's on the right side of the Outlook 2007 program window).

I find I'm constantly using the Task List to see what's due and to see what's coming up in the near future.

At any rate, if you've grown attached to the To-Do Bar, but wish maybe one section wasn't displayed or you could see more than one month at a time, you may be happy to know that there are some options for you!

To see exactly what you can change, you need the View menu, To-Do Bar submenu, Options choice.

When the To-Do Bar Options dialogue window opens, you'll see three settings, because there are three sections on your To-Do Bar.

Let's begin by saying you can remove any of the three parts by unchecking it in this window.

Beyond that, you can also control how many months of the calendar should be displayed and how many appointments you want to be listed.

Check, uncheck and set the quantities as you like and then click on the OK button.

You'll instantly find that your To-Do Bar has been updated to reflect your requests.

At this point, we must discuss what might be an unexpected outcome. If you choose to show multiple months of the calendar, the calendar will take up more space. Outlook will then redistribute what space is left and you may find yourself with a vertical scroll bar in one of the other areas.

You get the idea. Space is limited to the size of your monitor and Outlook will accommodate your choices, but you may find you can't actually see everything at once. It could take some scroll work to get to all of it.

I'd say that's a small price to pay for such convenient information though, wouldn't you?!

More Cool Stuff

WOW! Make Your Computer Run Like New (Maybe BETTER)!

Amazing Software Makes Windows Run Up To 300% Faster!

It's The Absolute BEST $8.97 You'll Ever Spend On Your PC!

You're Computer Will Be Smokin' Fast!

Customize, Tweak, Secure, Optimize, And Make 'Er FLY!!

OK, these are STILL going like crazy! Thank YOU to the 1000+ who have ordered! If you don't have it yet, you;re missing out big time! Just wait till you check out this mind-blowing deal on System Mechanic 7

It's by far, the very best program I've ever seen for getting the most out of Windows! You'll be blown away at what this does to your PC - You'll think you got a new computer! I tell ya, personally, I think this is just outstanding! I've seen a ton of software, but the improvements this makes is really nothing short of amazing! It optimizes Windows to be the way it SHOULD have been when you purchased it! Read on - and get ready to be really - and I mean REALLY - impressed!

First, I'm seriously impressed at just how easy this software makes it to really get your computer crankin'! I mean, I don't think there's anything on your computer this can't tweak and optimize!

To test, I installed it on my personal machine and it did a quick scan, and then it scared the poop outta me! it came up with a serious warning about a few security problems and gave me some really helpful speed improvement suggestions. Now here's the cool part - With just a couple mouse clicks, I'm now enjoying a MUCH faster -and much more secure - computer! And I honestly thought I was as tweaked out as I could be! Not even close - this was incredible - and all automatic!

What can it do for you? Let's talk speed - this takes your slow PC and turns it into a Ferrari - you'll think your computer is new again (maybe better than new)! It'll be just flying through programs and impressing the livin' daylights out of ya! This has a whopping 19 different ways to crank up the speed on your machine! In fact, many systems see an absolutely incredible 300% improvement after just some automatic adjusting by this program! WOW - that's worth $8.97 in anyone's book!

Want to surf the internet at up to 300% faster? Oh, man, this can help! Windows isn't necessarily optimized for the fastest connection out of the box, but this program can grab your settings and squeeze out the speed - you'll surf the internet like crazy! Who wouldn't want to surf up to 300% faster?!!? Heck, it even has a speed tool to measure how faster you connection speed is! Just fantastic!

Want more? - Sure ya do! Another thing this does that I'm in absolute love with is it lets you customize over 100 "secret" Windows settings! Stuff that you always wish Windows would let you adjust but there isn't really any direct way to do it. This makes it point-and-click easy!! You can: Optimize the way Windows' Start Menu behaves, speed up networking performance, log in automatically, edit your computer registration data, change multimedia behavior, improve pagefile security, customize explorer's context menus, edit advanced administration options, and much more!!

Oh, and just wait till you point your mouse at the Automatic System Maintenance section! I just love this! This part of the program will watch in the background and wait till the system is idle. As soon as you're not using the computer, it will work in the background tuning your computer for absolute peak performance! Here's the really cool part - just touch your mouse, and it stops what it's doing and gives the system back to you! Really! If you've ever been slowed down by a stubborn anti-virus that insisted on scanning while you were working, you know just how cool this is! Oh, and it even lets you pick and choose what optimizations to run!

Another automatic feature I think is just brilliant is the "One-Click" option! It's just what it sounds like - just click the button and System Mechanic runs all of its system enhancement programs and cranks your system up to the next level! Just a button push away! It makes it easy for EVERYONE to have a smokin' system!

Of course, no utility suite would be complete without some killer security tools - and this has the best! This program will quickly scan your system and help you find all the holes - then just plug them with a mouse click! I was really surprised when it found not one, not two, but THREE major holes on my personal PC! I clicked the mouse and the world was safe again!

Oh, and that's not all! This also includes both a world-class Anti-Virus (one of the easiest, most comprehensive AVs I've ever used) and a really top-notch Firewall! Either one retails for more than we're selling the entire suite for! WOW!

PLUS - it destroys spyware, adware, malware and more. OK, put it this way - if it was made to attack your system, this is going to seek it out and destroy it like a battalion of ticked off Marines!

OK, all that's great, but what if your PC is really messed up - like it won't boot? This software can handle that too! Just pop in a recovery CD and System Mechanic will examine your system and get your computer running right again! If you've ever had that sick "why isn't my computer booting" feeling, you can appreciate how great this will be next time it happens!

One more thing and I'll try to stop! System Mechanic is just fanatical about grabbing up wasted space on your hard drive! This just blew me away when it found a whopping 1.5 GIG of wasted hard drive space! Geeze - I've had whole hard drives that were smaller than that! This made grabbing that space back a mouse click away! I tell ya - you just can't go wrong here!

OK - can ya tell I'm impressed? There's actually a LOT more this can do, but I don't want to write a book on it (OK, maybe I've already come close)! I'm currently running this software and couldn't be happier with it. My system is definitely faster than before it was installed and I just love the performance increase! If you only buy one software program this year - GRAB THIS!

Your price? Get this - just $8.97 and US shipping is FREE! AND - this is a 3 license pack too! WOW!!! We've never had it this cheap!!! When you think of all this can do, for $8.97, it's the biggest no-brainer in software history! Check it out:

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4052

PS - Seriously, after just using this for a short time, I wouldn't be without it. If WorldStart wasn't carrying it, I'd happily pay the $70 for it somewhere else - it really is that good! PLEASE - take a look at this one, I've NEVER seen a better, more complete utility program! Blows everything else right out of the water!!

PS - The price will increase to $18.97 very soon (probably like, tomorrow)!

Restoring Previously Opened Folders

Do you have a list of folders you access regularly? You know, the same ones you open every time you start up your computer. If so, you can set up your computer so that those folders are opened automatically each time you boot up the Windows Vista operating system. Let's check it out!

Here's what you need to do to make that happen:

1.) First, open Windows Explorer.

2.) Next, select Organize from the toolbar at the top of the window.

3.) Click on Folder and Search Options and the following window will open up on your screen:

4.) Now, click on the View tab.

5.) Check the option that says “Restore previous folder windows on log on."

6.) Click Apply and then OK.

Now, when you log off, restart or shut down your Vista computer, it will automatically open the previously opened folders. It's the perfect way to save yourself some time and energy. Give it a try today!
