Computer Tips [ 5 Critical Computer Safety Tips + No More Missing Buttons + Make Computing Comfy ] 10/29/08

Quick Tips

Click to Activate

I'm sure most of you have run into this little predicament before, but just in case you haven't or if you're not sure what to do when it does happen, this tip should help! If a Web site you're trying to look at has some sort of flash animation included with it, you might receive a pop up message that says something like "Click to activate and use this control."

This usually only happens on sites that have videos, etc. that you're trying to view. If a site uses any of the following programs, you will more than likely receive that message: Adobe Flash Player (this is the most common one), Authorware Player, Shockwave Player, Adobe Reader, Sun Java, Apple QuickTime, RealNetworks RealPlayer and a few other ActiveX controls. The active content that is embedded within the HTML pages on certain Web sites will not do anything until you click the page with your mouse. Clicking it then activates the content and it is able to continue the download.

This issue started awhile back with an update for Internet Explorer 6. It was expected for most Web page developers who were a part of this problem to redo their sites so that the users wouldn't have to click every time just to see certain pages. Unfortunately, not all developers have done that, so you may still run into this every now and then. When you do, just click once like it tells you to and you will be able to see the content. It's a little annoying, but it's not a huge problem. It's just a good idea to at least be aware of it in case you ever come across it in the future!

Brilliant Split Surge Protector!

What An Amazing Idea!

You've Never Seen A Surge Protector Like This!

$50,000 Connected Equipment Warranty Too!

WOW!! Wait Till You Try It!

Know what I love about this job? It's finding really cool stuff like this! We just discovered the absolute ULTIMATE surge protector! It's the Fellowes 8 Outlet SPLIT Surge Protector - and it's the coolest surge protector I've ever plugged into a wall! You gotta check this out:

First, take a look at this thing - it's split in two and connected with a 4 foot cord! Think about it - How many times do your cords just not quite reach your surge protector?? You know how it goes - you plug in your surge protector, and only about 2 out of 3 cords actually reach it - the rest are an exercise in frustration. You end up stretching, pulling, yanking and rearranging to try and get the rest to fit! Some of you have probably even plugged a second surge protector into your first one so your could reach your short cords :-) It's dangerous to do it, but I've seen it done more than once! Well, that's EXACTLY why this was invented!

Now, you can plug a single surge protector into the wall, and have TWO different locations for your cords - up to 4 feet apart! FINALLY! You can get EVERYTHING to reach the plugs! I took one of these home and unplugged my two surge protectors and replaced 'em with this (I'm not going to confess if they were plugged together or not :-)! What an ingenious design! You're gonna absolutely LOVE how easy this makes it to get your cords to reach! You'll FINALLY be able to arrange things the way YOU want - not by whether the cords reach or not!

Oh, and while this is really terrific for computers, it's also fantastic for TV or stereo rooms too! You know how you usually have components on either side of the TV or cabinet? Well, you can imagine how easy this is going to make it to get everything plugged in! With that 4 foot cord between the plug strips, this makes setting up any kind of electronic workspace a snap! I don't know why everyone doesn't do it this way!

Plus, this really protects you - it's rated at 1000 Joules, so it can take a huge wallop! I was really impressed with its outstanding $50,000 connected equipment warranty too - if a surge gets through, they will replace up to $50,000 worth of connected equipment! I don't know about you, but I think if they're willing to bet $50 grand on this, then it's gotta be GREAT! (Cheap insurance too, ya know?)

Ohhh, this is cool too - Did you know that not all electricity coming into your home is "clean"? Interference, fluctuations, and various environmental influences can mean that you're equipment is getting "dirty" power - with the upshot of a shortened lifespan. Well, this solves that too! It does EMI/RFI noise filtering to help insure that your equipment gets fed nice, clean power - helping your electronics last longer! That feature alone was a HUGE reason I grabbed one of these (OK, yeah, yeah, I grabbed a couple)!

Think that's all? Well, read on! This has another brilliant feature that I REALLY like - and I think all surge protectors should have - an LED light to indicate if you have a wiring problem and an LED surge indication! PLUS it allows you to hook in your phone/fax/modem line - protecting you from phone line surges! It even has a 15 AMP breaker for overload protection! Easily the best surge protector we've ever offered, that's for sure!

Whew, that's pretty much the overview - it's a lot of surge protector, that's for sure! You've just gotta try this - the "split apart" idea works out really, really well - I personally just love it! Like I said, I wonder why all surge protectors don't do this?! When you think about it, most of the time all your cords don't all reach the same spot - why not have a surge protector that helps?

Your cost? Well, we're gonna do a deal for ya! You can get one for just $21.97 or TWO for just $32.97 and save nearly $11! - Heck, these retail for $40 each, so you're really saving $18.00 on the single and $47.00 on the double! WOW! As always US shipping is FREE and if you don't love it like I do, send it back to me within 60 days and I'll give you a refund. Nothin' to lose - unless you wait, we only have a limited quantity:

Get one for $21.97 (Retail $40):

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4689

Get two for $32.97 (Retail $80):

http://store.worldstart.com/product.php?productid=4690

PS - I think this is how ALL surge protectors should be! This makes it soooo easy to get ALL your electronics plugged in - just wait till you try it! I actually had a stupid grin on my face as I was hooking this up and every cord was reaching (oh, I've had frustrations in the past)! I know you'll love it too!

Computers 101

Q:
I would like to remove some programs from my computer, but when I go to the Add/Remove Programs section of the Control Panel, the Change/Remove button that's normally there is missing. What can I do to get it back so I can get these programs uninstalled from my PC? Any help you have would be greatly appreciated!

A:
Wow, that has to be so frustrating! I have to admit that I have never had this happen to me before. (On another note, I also have to admit that I don't go through and remove my programs like I should sometimes. Shhh! Don't tell on me!) Either way, I still feel your pain with this one and after a little research, I was able to find a quick fix for this. Let's check it out, shall we?!

First of all, if some of you aren't quite sure what I'm talking about, go to Start, Control Panel and select the Add/Remove Programs link. There you will see a list of all the programs you have installed on your computer. If you run down through that list and highlight your programs, there should be a Change/Remove button for each of those applications. With that button, you can control all that you do with your programs. You can either change them or completely remove them from your computer. So, as you can see, if that button isn't there, all your control is gone and that is what's ailing the person who asked today's question. With all that said, let's get on with the show!

Warning: For this tip, you will be working in your Registry Editor, so before you begin, make sure you're comfortable using it. The Registry Editor is not a tool to just play around with. If you make a mistake, you could risk messing up other parts of your computer and so on. If you're not 100 percent sure you can do this, please ask someone who is for some help.

When you're ready, just simply follow these steps to get your Change/Remove buttons back:

1.) Go to Start, Run and type "regedit" (without the quotes) into the box. Click OK and the Registry Editor will open for you.

2.) Then navigate to this location:

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\<Program Name>."

Note: (For the program name, you'll want to look for the program you want to remove from your computer).

3.) In the right pane, double click the NoRemove choice (REG_DWORD) and set the value to 0 (zero). If it happens to be set to 1, the Remove button will not be available.

4.) Back in the right pane, double click the NoModify option (REG_DWORD) and set it to 0 (zero) as well. If this happens to be set to 1, the Change button will not be available.

Now, you will need to do this for each program you want to remove, but once you change those two values, click OK and close everything else out. Then go back to the Control Panel and look through your list of programs. All of the Change/Remove buttons should be back for you and you can then continue removing all those unnecessary programs from your computer. No more missing buttons. Oh yeah!

MS Office

Pictures in Line With Text?

Have you ever noticed that when you insert a picture into MS Word, the program automatically puts it in line with the text? You know, like this:

I don't know about you, but most of the time, I prefer the text to wrap around the picture and really integrate it into the document. Something more like this:

To make that happen, I usually have to go through and change the formatting for each picture. What a pain! I mean, if I'm always going to change the picture formatting, wouldn't it make more sense to have Word format the picture to my preferences from the get go?

Yeah, I agree. So, that's what I have for you today!

To change the way Word formats a picture upon insertion, you'll need to go to the Options dialogue window.

For older versions of Word, go to the Tools menu, Options choice.

Once you're in the Options dialogue window, you need the Edit tab.

You're now looking for the "Insert/paste picture as" field. Use the arrow to pull down the list and choose the formatting you prefer.

For Word 2007, you need the Office Button, Word Options button.

In the Options dialogue window, you need the Advanced options, "Cut, copy and paste" section.

You're also looking for the "Insert/paste picture as" field. Use the arrow to pull down the list and choose the formatting you prefer.

When you're all finished, click OK.

That's it!

The next time you insert a picture, you should find that it's automatically formatted to meet your standards from the very beginning. It just doesn't get any better than that!

Tip of the Day

Get Comfy!

When you sit at your computer for too long, does your back start to hurt? Do your eyes go blurry or do you have various other aches and pains you have to deal with? If so, you're probably wondering what you can change to make your computing a little more comfortable, am I right? Well, read on for some suggestions on how you can do just that!

If the work you have to do each day requires you to sit in front of a computer for long periods of time, it's important to handle everything the right way. If you do, you can bypass all those aches and pains that start to linger around. If you've ever had trouble with this or think you might in the future, read on. I've got some important instructions for you today!

The first thing you have to look at is the set up of your computer equipment. If you don't have things set correctly, it could really cause you some strain. You need to change everything around to accommodate to the proper body positions. The number one thing is your seating arrangement. Make sure your chair is adjusted so that your feet fit flat (but comfortably) on the floor. Your knees should always bend at a 90 degree angle and your thighs should be parallel to the floor. Next, make sure the back of your chair is adjusted properly. It should be set in such a way that your hips bend at a 90 degree angle and one that gives proper lower back support to you.

The next item for discussion is how your mouse and keyboard are set. Make sure they are placed where your hands can be at your elbow height or slightly lower and where your shoulders can relax with your elbows hanging down close to your sides. Your monitor is also a big deal when it comes to comfort. It should be placed on your desk in a position that lines up to or is slightly below your eye level. Make sure you have a straight forward viewing of your screen and ensure that you are at least 16" away from it. Always keep your head upright as well. All of this will help with any eye strain you may get.

Now, once you have all of that set in place, you can work on making your computing habits healthy ones. During your day, try to keep a correct posture as much as you can. Although you need to stay comfortable, proper posture helps a lot. Also, make sure you use as little force as possible. When you're typing, you don't need to pound the keyboard. You can get through by just tapping the keys lightly. This will help with any pain you have in your hands.

You should also take plenty of breaks throughout the day. Extended computer use can lead to more problems for you at the end of the day. It's said that you shouldn't go over 30 minutes of being at your computer at one time. Get up and stretch every once in awhile or take a short walk around the office. Now, when you stretch, you should watch yourself. Don't bounce, use any jerky moves or stretch so much that it hurts. When stretching, breathe deeply and just straighten your body out until you feel a comfortable limit.

Another important factor in comfortable computer use is the lighting around you. If possible, avoid any bright lighting, because it is bad for your eyes. Of course, make sure your lighting is bright enough for you to see what you're doing, but don't overdo it. If your eyes ever get tired, try shutting them tightly for a few seconds and then open them as wide as you can. Repeat this a few times to feel some relief.

If you are one of the many who deal with aches and pains everyday after work, you should try some of these exercises as well. With all the typing and clicking you do, it's possible that your hands start to feel a little cramped. To combat this, try spreading your fingers out as far as you can get them and hold for 10 seconds. Do that several times in a row every so often. For your neck, you should turn your head to each side and keep it there for 10 seconds. You can also try tilting your head to each side for a few seconds for some extra comfort. If you have shoulder pain, shrug them forward in a circular motion for several seconds. Do it in the reverse mode (backward) as well. Finally, for your lower back, stand up and put your hands on your hips with your feet shoulder length apart. Lean your hips forward, but push your shoulders back. Hold there and stretch them for 10 seconds or so.

Okay, I think that pretty much covers everything. I know this is a bit of a strange tip for today, but if we aren't comfortable while we're using our computers, our work won't be worth anything. Sometimes you just have to go back to the basics!

Today's Feature

Securely Using Public Computers

I have written several articles in the past about ways you can protect your computer, but what if you're not using your own computer? What if you're using a public computer instead (at a library or hotel, for example?) Those computers may not be as secure as your home system and you need to take the proper steps to ensure your personal data stays safe. Here are five tips you can follow for securely using a public computer!

1.) Don't Do Online Banking

I know this seems like a no brainer, but people do it. If you're using a public computer and you log in to your online banking Web site, you're putting yourself at great risk. There is no way to tell if there's spyware or adware on the computer you're using that could steal your data. That's why it's never a good idea to do any of your banking on a public computer.

2.) Don't Save Anything

Would you bring a stack of tax documents to a hotel lobby and leave them there? Probably not! The same goes for saving any of your personal documents on a public computer. This one applies to files, passwords, music, pictures, downloads, etc. It's just not a good idea to do anything like that on a public computer.

3.) Don't Buy Anything

This tip is similar to the first one. Buying something on a public computer usually involves some sort of financial information, which is simply a bad idea!

4.) Delete Internet Explorer Temporary Files

This is a simple step that will help a lot! After you're finished using a public computer, make sure you delete the Internet Explorer temp files. To do that, go to Tools, Internet Options and click on the Delete button. Then just click Delete All. That way, no one else will know what you did on the computer.

5.) Restart the Computer

This is another simple step that will do a lot of good. Restarting the computer after you're done using it will delete a lot of the temporary files and it will clear out the memory of the computer. People waiting behind you to use the computer might not like the hold up, but when it comes to your safety, it's a very important step.

Until next time, stay safe out there, my friends!

America’s Best Restroom

An odd topic, I know, but who doesn’t enjoy a nice bathroom?! We have a McDonald’s in town that was just newly renovated and it has a nicer bathroom than I have in my house!

I have to admit, I’m proud that Jungle Jim’s in Fairfield, Ohio took the number one slot for 2007. They are really neat! The outside looks like a port-a-potty, but inside, there are really lovely restrooms. They even have a sign in the store announcing their number one status!

If you go to the ABR Hall of Fame link on the right side menu, you will see the top five listings for each year from 2002 to 2008. After each one’s name, you’ll find a link to some pictures. Just click the See It Here link to get to the pictures. You’ll also get a description of the location on that page.

Whether it's an awesome gas station restroom or a restroom in a five star restaurant, if it's nice and it's located in the U.S., it can be nominated for the "Best Restroom" award. Do you know of a public restroom you’d like to nominate? If you do, just click the Nominate a Restroom link on the right side menu.

All you have to do is fill out the form. The fields are Name, E-mail Address, Location City, Location Building, Location Contact, Contact Phone or E-mail, What Makes This Restroom Special and What Do You Look For in a Restroom? When you're done, click the Submit Nomination button and you’ll be good to go.

Don’t have a specific restroom in mind? That’s okay too! You can still take the Restroom Survey also located on the right side menu. Just answer the questions to the best of your ability and click Submit Survey. One of the things I hate when you go into a public restroom is that the sinks are sopping wet all over!

You may want to bookmark this Web site so that you can vote in future polls. Have fun!

Undine Falls

Yeah, strange name, but good falls! I'd like to say I had to hike 12 miles into the backcountry to get this shot, but this was taken probably about 10 yards from the parking lot. Worth the quick stop!
