Computer Tips [ The Horror Of Invalid Filenames + Setting Up Single-Click Icons + Your Other Keyboard ] 03/23/2009

Computer Tipswww.worldstart.com No, this isn't Steve. You can tell because Steve never wears a suit :-)

Quick Tips

On Screen Keyboard

I'm not sure how many of you would like to use this, but I thought it would be a neat little idea to share with you all. Did you know that you can put a keyboard on your computer screen and actually type with it?

If that sounds interesting to you, then follow these directions. Go to Start, Run and type in "osk" (without the quotes). Click OK and a mini keyboard will pop up on your screen. Now, open up the program you want to write in and start clicking the letters on the keyboard with your mouse. The letters will appear and your typing will be done.

This may not be the quickest way to type, but if you like to use your mouse and you don't exactly like typing on the keyboard, this is perfect for you. Once you have the keyboard on your screen, you can even go to the Settings menu and choose your own font and size. There is also a sound option, so if you like to hear the keys clicking, choose "Use clicking sound." In the Keyboard menu, you can also choose the number of keys you would like to have displayed, between 101, 102 and 106.

Isn't that cool? I just used it to type this last sentence. Keep in mind that it might take you a little while to get acquainted with the keys on the on screen keyboard, but it's definitely worth a shot and it's kinda fun. There's also a Help menu if you need any further help figuring it all out.

Q:
What are those three little buttons on the upper right-hand corner of an open window for?

A:
Those are the Minimize, Maximize, and Close buttons.

The "X" closes the window.

The "Box" maximizes the program, making it full screen. If it's already maximized, it looks like a box on top of another box. If you click it in that state, it will make your window smaller.

Finally, the little "_" is the minimize button. It reduces the current window to a Taskbar button. Clicking the button on the Taskbar restores the window to its former state.

We've been getting a lot of questions lately from people who are trying to make their windows smaller. I guess big windows are out this year or something.

Anyhow, in order to re-size a window, you need to be sure it's in a "normal" state, and not Maximized. If your Maximize button is a single box (as shown above), then you can re-size. If it's a double box, click it and it will turn to a single box.

Then to resize your window, just hover your mouse cursor over an edge or corner of the window you want to re-size. It should turn into a double-arrow. Just left-click, hold and drag till the window is the size you want.

Finally, here's a hint for all you first time re-sizers: If you resize using a corner (preferably not the corner with the min, max, and close buttons) you can resize both height and width at the same time.

MS Office

Need More Data?

Are you an MS Outlook user who often finds yourself wishing for more Contact fields? That is, maybe you're looking to enter data that has no "pre-made" location?

Frustrating, isn't it?

What do you do?

I mean, you want the data recorded for future use, but where?

Let's face it. If you "slide" it into another field just to have a record of the information, you could easily forget where you put it. (Sort of like my car keys. I'm always putting them some place where "I won't lose them." Yeah, right!)

So, here's a way to put a "key hook on the wall" and make a place for all your Contact data, so you don't accidentally misplace it.

To begin, you need to open a Contact.

Next, in older versions of Outlook, you're looking for the All Fields tab.

In Outlook 2007 you need the All Fields button located on the Contacts tab of the Ribbon.

The resulting list of All Fields list will look like this:

In the bottom left corner, you'll find the New button. Click it.

The New Field window will open and this is where you can enter a name and choose a data type for the field.

Once everything is set, click OK.

When you're returned to the Contact window, you'll notice the new field is now listed in the All Fields tab.

You can enter your data to the right of the field name.

If you need to remove a field from the list, select it and click the Delete button at the bottom.

Data where you won't lose it. Who would have thought?!

Now, if only I could get that kind of organization with all the other stuff I keep misplacing!

~ April

Tip of the Day

File Name Characters to Avoid

Ever try to save a file only to be told that the file name is "invalid" due to a character issue? It's not you, nor a jab at your personality, I promise!

So, to avoid future problems, I give you a list of characters to avoid:

* Asterisk

< >[ ] Brackets

= Equal sign

+ Plus sign

" Quotes

\ / Slashes

, . : ; Comma, Period, Colon, Semicolon

Why don't these characters work in file names? Simple—they have specific functions in Windows so it confuses the system if a filename contains them.

Back in the old days before Windows was smart enough to tell you that a file name was invalid, it often resulted in disaster. Now it just gives you an annoying pop-up and a stern reprimand.

Amanda's Coolsite

Hubble Site

This site is huge and full of fabulously interesting things to check out. Under the category "Announcements", the first entry "Tonight's Sky" is my favorite of the whole site. Let's visit it shall we?

Tonight's Sky — To get them out of the way I'll mention the resources, and archive links now. Take a brief look at them, then click "Play Movie" near the top of the screen. The movie loads and takes you through what is in the night's sky for August. It shows you what to look for, where to find it, and even tells you what is visible to the naked eye. Did you know that planets don't twinkle like stars and as such are easier to spot? I didn't either. From the constellations Lyra and Sagittarius to Deep Space Nebulae, you will not regret watching this movie. I even watched it twice, and I can't wait for a clear night to go stargazing.

Also, in the Announcements category you will find links to the Gallery and to the Astronomy Print Shop where you can print out museum quality pictures of space.

Now in the Explore Hubble Site category you will find even more to do. The sections you will find here are News Center, Gallery, Discoveries, Sci-Tech, Fun & Games, and the Reference Desk.

I want to talk to you about the Fun & Games section where you can learn how to build your own handheld Hubble. I though that was really marvelous seeing as how it would get kids interested in space with a hands on experience. I even built one here at home. It goes over everything from materials to safety rules, as well as detailed instructions.

Another noteworthy area is the "Beyond the Pictures" section. You can get there by going to the News Center, click on the FITS for Fun article, and then on the side of the page you will see the question: "Have You Seen This?" Below it is the link to the Beyond the Pictures section where you can learn how they colorize the pictures from the Hubble as well as why it's in that funky staircase shape.

Absolutely worth a look or two!
