Quick Tips

Progress Bar

Here's the scenario: You just typed in the address of your favorite Web site and you've hit the button that will start the loading process. You then wait patiently in anticipation for the site to come up so that you can start using it. Now, while you're waiting, what do you usually look at to see how much of the site has been loaded? Perhaps you look at the little blue bar at the bottom of your Web browser to check on its progress. Am I right? Well, if you do, you're doing the right thing. You probably look at it everyday, but do you know what it's called or what it's there for? Keep reading for the full scoop!

That little bar is called the "progress bar." (I know, a real original name, huh?!) But it's that bar that tells you everything you need to know about getting your favorite Web sites up and running. In case you're not sure what it looks like, here's a picture of one: . The bar will usually be a solid blue color, but depending on the browser you use, yours may be a green dotted line instead.

You can turn to the progress bar to see how far a site has loaded or to see how much longer it has to go. The progress bar also comes in handy when there seems to be a problem with a Web site opening up all the way. If the bar seems to be stuck, you can close down your browser and try it again. Now, the term "progress bar" is also used for any downloads or file transfers you may do on your computer. It really does serve so many purposes. And now you know all there is to know about it!

Computers 101

Q:
The mouse I use has a scroll wheel on the top of it and lately, the wheel has not been working properly. Do you know of anything I can do to fix it? Please help. I really miss my mouse!

A:
That must be awful! I mean, I'm sure you can still use your mouse, but if your scroll wheel doesn't work, that could be a big pain in the you know what. Unfortunately, the wheel on your mouse is just like any other part of the mouse and it can stop working or start acting funny at any time. Whatever your situation, there are a few things you can do to get it back up and "wheeling" again!

The mouse you have may work differently for the type of computer you have, so first, I'll run through some suggestions for all of you Microsoft Windows users out there. Then a little later on in the tip, I'll go over some tricks that may help those of you who use a different type of computer (like a Mac, for example). Okay, let's check them out!

In any version of Windows, the first thing you need to look at is the Mouse Properties window. To get there, go to Start, Control Panel and then click on the Printers and Other Hardware link. From there, just click on the Mouse link. The Mouse Properties box will then open.

Click on the Wheel tab and adjust the number of lines your mouse is able to scroll through at one time. Yours may be set too high and your mouse can't handle it. You can go up to 100, but it's best to keep the number kind of low. Mine is set to three lines at a time. Just change the number and keep trying your mouse until you find a number that fits your wheel better. When you think you've got it fixed, click Apply and OK. If that doesn't work, go back to the Wheel tab and select the option of "One screen at a time." That may help slow your mouse down a little so that it can work better for you. Click Apply and OK again to make all the changes.

If you're still having trouble with the wheel after that, you may want to try and adjust your mouse through the program you installed when you first got it. (That is, if your mouse is a non-Microsoft brand). For example, if you're using a Logitech mouse, it may be configured a little differently and you can use the software that came with it to fix it. Just load up the CD on your computer and look for the Mouse Settings. You can then go through the settings and adjust what needs to be done. They'll probably be similar to what I already explained up above.

If you're still having no luck, you'll want to make sure your mouse drivers are up to date. If you're using old drivers or even an older version of the mouse software, you'll need to do some updates. For that information, the best place to look is in the manual that came with your mouse. If you can't find any update information there, you may want to try contacting the manufacturer of your mouse and see if they can send you the drivers and or software you need.

Now, if you're using a non-Microsoft Windows computer, the best thing to do is reinstall the software that came with your mouse. If that doesn't work, make sure you install the latest drivers for your operating system, which again, you can get from your mouse manual or by contacting the manufacturer of your mouse. That's the easiest thing to do when it comes to that!

All in all, if you're still having trouble with your mouse wheel after all of that, it's likely your mouse is defective and you'll probably want to look into buying a new one in the near future. If you don't want to pay for a whole new one, you can try getting a replacement from the manufacturer, but I'm not promising that will work. Mice aren't too expensive these days, but I understand you have to do what you have to do. Either way, I hope you're able to get your mouse back up and running again. Here's to no more mouse problems. Oh yeah!

MS Office

One After Another

Do you use MS Office's Drawing Tools frequently?

Have you ever used the same drawing tool repeatedly and found yourself aggravated with the need to turn the tool back on after each new shape?

It sure would be nice to be able to turn the drawing tool on and leave it on, wouldn't it?

Well, maybe we can make that happen!

Did you know it's possible to turn some of the drawing tools on for multiple draws?

It sure is and it's all in one extra click.

Here's what you do if you're using an older version of Office:

I found I could double click the circle, rectangle, arrow or line tool and the shape would be turned on for multiple drawings.

Now, for all you Office 2007 users.

When you go to the Insert tab on the ribbon, Shapes button, you'll want to right click on the shape you wish to draw multiple times.

With the right click, you'll see the Lock Drawing Mode option.

Select it and the shape will be turned on for multiple drawings.

No matter which version, you have a couple of choices for turning the drawing tool off.

You could choose to click on the shape button again to turn it off.

Or, my personal favorite, you could hit the Esc key.

From now on, it's click, click and you're set to go!

Tip of the Day

Google Bookmarks

How many of you use a computer at home and a computer at your work place? If so, would you like to be able to access the same Web sites without having to tote around a flash drive or e-mail yourself between the two computers? If that sounds good to you, you’ve got to check out Google’s bookmarks. I promise, you’ll love their organization and flexibility!

Google bookmarks are super easy to set up and just as easy to label. They allow you to quickly attach an existing label to a bookmark or create a new one. What’s even better is any changes you make to your bookmarks and labels are saved to your personal Google account. That allows you to access the same information on any computer at any time. Just keep in mind though, if you have trouble accessing your bookmarks from another computer, make sure that computer has the most recent version of the Google toolbar.

We’re talking about computers, so let’s face it. There's one slight drawback: the process for labeling a bookmark in Internet Explorer is slightly different than labeling a bookmark in Firefox. But I’ll show you how to do both below!

Google bookmarks are one of the features available on the Google toolbar. Simply download the toolbar here, set up a Google account if you don’t already have one and then sign in. Now, you’re ready to save and organize your bookmarks. Let's go!

For Internet Explorer

1.) Click once on the Bookmark button . You'll then receive a message that tells you the page has been bookmarked, like this:

2.) Click on the button a second time to label the bookmark. You’ll then receive this message:

3.) Type a name in the Name: box if you'll better recognize another name or use the name Google automatically creates for the page.

4.) To categorize the bookmark, type a label in the Labels: box. If you've entered a label previously that you want to use, simply choose it from the drop down box:

5.) Click on the Save Changes button.

6.) The Save Changes button will then gray out and say Saved.

For Firefox

1.) Click on the button a second time and the following option menu will appear:

Now, you have a couple of options for saving a label to a bookmark.

2.) The easiest way is to simply choose a label from the list, provided you actually have some labels there. A checkmark will appear next to the label you select. If no label is present, click on New Label. Or, you can click on Edit This Bookmark and the following screen will appear:

3.) Type a name in the Name: box if you'll better recognize another name or use the name Google automatically creates for the page.

4.) Type a new label name into the second box or select one that's available.

5.) Click OK. With Firefox, you don’t get a confirmation that your changes have been made, but if you go back to edit the bookmark, you’ll see your changes.

That’s it. Now, you have a bookmark that, once you sign in, you can access on any computer in the world!

Today's Feature

Wireless Security: Hacked

I have written several different articles about securing your wireless connections. Having an insecure wireless network is like getting a megaphone and announcing your social security number to your whole neighborhood. When your wireless network is not encrypted, anyone within range can gain access to your data fairly easily.

A few days ago, some bad news came through the line. It seems like one method of wireless encryption has been broken. A hacker has been able to break the encryption and gain access to data, even when the security is turned on. The encryption type that has been broken is called WPA-TKIP. It's one of the most common types of wireless network encryption, which means many wireless networks could be at risk.

Luckily, I'm sharing this information with you well before anyone can get to your data. It seems as if the hacker who has broken the wireless security is the only one so far. In a week or so, he will tell the rest of the world how he did it. After that, others will be able to use his technique and hack wireless connections around the world.

So, how can you protect yourself? Allow me to explain!

Many wireless routers come with different types of security. The three main types are called WEP, WPA and WPA2. WEP and WPA are now vulnerable to attack. WEP has been known as a weak system for some time and WPA was just hacked a few days ago. On the other hand, WPA2 has not been affected. That means if you change your wireless security to WPA2, you'll be safe.

If you want to check and see what security you have on your wireless connection, you'll need the manual for your wireless router. Look in the manual for directions on how to set up the wireless security. Once you find that information, look to see which method you're currently using. If you're using WEP or WPA, you should change to WPA2. If you're not using any at all, please activate WPA2!

While most routers support WPA2, some do not. If your router doesn't support WPA2, you should continue to use WPA. Yes, it has been hacked, but it's far better than using nothing at all. Until next time, stay safe out there, my friends!

Gettysburg Address

It was on November 19, 1863 that President Abraham Lincoln gave his now famous "Gettysburg Address" at the consecration of the Civil War cemetery there. Here on the Gettysburg Address Web site, you can explore the documents from that event.

The site is divided into four main sections, with two links to more of Lincoln’s papers.

Drafts of the Gettysburg Address – Here you'll find two rough drafts of the "Gettysburg Address." You can not only view pictures of them, but you can also read the transcription of the texts. There's some debate over whether or not the Nicolay version was Lincoln’s reading copy of the address. You'll also find a copy of the version that's on the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Lincoln’s Invitation to Gettysburg – Lincoln was invited to speak at the consecration of the cemetery by David Wills. Here you can read both the initial invitation and the cordial invitation for Lincoln to stay at Wills' home. The letters also have their accompanying transcription, which I found to be very helpful, because Wills' handwriting is so full of flourish, it was hard to read.

Only Known Photo of Lincoln at Gettysburg – Here you'll find not only the photo mentioned in the title of this section, but also a detail shot of it. You’ll have to decide for yourself if you really think it's Lincoln.

Preservation Techniques for Old Documents – I'm quite pleased that they include this information along with the other documents. I was wondering how they would go about preserving those important historical papers. Thankfully, it's explained here in detail so that you'll have no doubt about how it's done.

This is a very interesting look into one of the most well known addresses given in history. Check it out!
